MATTAWA ONTARIO: ATV Adventures Await!

10/2/2006

Back in June of 1999 All-Terrain Vehicle Magazine attended a mini-summit on getting ATV riders organized in Ontario. Local businessman Phil Bangs was the president of the newly formed Mattawa ATV club and the group was excited about showcasing its trail system.

After sampling these trails, the editors and staff of All-Terrain Vehicle decided Mattawa deserved to be featured as the first destination article in our inaugural magazine: Volume 1, Number 1; October 1999.

Anyone who has visited the Mattawa district will tell you it’s one of the most beautiful places to visit. Rustic scenery, green forests, jagged rock cuts and winding trails combine with gorgeous lakes and rivers to deliver breathtaking vistas. Furthermore it’s a near legendary area for hunting, fishing and any kind of outdoor recreation.

The region sits on the shores of the Mattawa and Ottawa rivers and is nestled in the rugged Canadian Shield between the Algonquin Highlands and the Laurentian mountains.

Seven years later and with much perseverance, the Voyageur Multi-Use System (VMUTS) has grown into a world class trail system. An excellent map with color coded trails for the degree of difficulty has been perfected. Trail signage is detailed and complete.

If you’re planning a trip to Mattawa allow several days as there are enough trails to keep even the most ambitious rider well entertained and satisfied.

Located three hours west of the city of Ottawa on Highway 17 and approximately four hours north of Toronto via Highways 11 and 17, Mattawa is truly a four season destination where hunting, fishing, camping and countless other opportunities and events await you.
