Textron Off Road Introduces the All-New Prowler Pro

Textron Off Road continues to innovate its off-road vehicle lineup with the introduction of the all-new, pure-utility 2019 Prowler Pro and Prowler Pro XT.

Built in Thief River Falls, Minn. by the company known for precision engineering that fuels adventurers and hard workers all over the world, both models deliver quiet gas power and unmatched reliability for tackling the toughest jobs and handling the most-extreme hunts.

“Textron Off Road focused on the driver experience when developing the new Prowler Pro,” said John Collins, Vice President, Consumer for Textron Specialized Vehicles. “The legacy of Textron, a leader in design and production of combat vehicles, military helicopters and advanced marine craft trusted to keep our warfighters safe, has been built into this vehicle making it a formidable work partner.”

Whether its traversing farm fields, tending to livestock or pacing the thrill of the hunt, farmers and hunters appreciate a quiet vehicle. At the heart of the Prowler Pro is a 50-horsepower, whisper-quiet, 812cc EFI engine offering all the grunt needed to be a reliable work partner or haul big game. To complement the strong, silent engine, vibration-reducing engine mounts to minimize buzzing and harshness so the vehicle offers quiet power and performance. Prowler Pro also features a tuned exhaust utilizing a rubber isolator with the muffler to lessen exhaust noise.

Drive-by-wire throttle technology is matched by a carefully calibrated CVT drive system to provide ultra-smooth acceleration and off-gas deceleration. The drive-by-wire system is even programmed to compensate for unintended “foot bounce” on the gas pedal to maintain smooth power delivery when riding over rough terrain.

Prowler Pro offers a quiet ride experience and the comfort needed for tough tasks and long days. For a comfortable ride, the vehicle has 10 inches of front and 9.5 inches of rear suspension travel with 10.75 inches of ground clearance. The 26-inch Pro Terrain tires tackle rutted farm fields and the toughest hunting trails.

Its 2,000-pound towing capacity, 1,500-pound payload and 1,000-pound cargo box capacity allow implements and game to be towed or hauled with ease. For in-cab comfort, the vehicle features a three-person bench seat perfect for work applications, and tilt steering with a column shifter for easy and comfortable operation. Its customizable speed control allows the operator to easily set a maximum speed between 25-50 mph (in 1-km increments) to ensure that ranch and farm hands are utilizing appropriate speed on the job.

Whether hunting or farming, storage is essential, and Prowler Pro offers 17.95 cubic-feet of overall storage capacity. The vehicle also has a cargo box with 14.72 cubic-feet to haul plenty of gear or game. Its modular in-cab design allows for the removal of the passenger seats – which can be easily stored behind the driver’s seat – to free up additional storage space for oversized items. The behind-the-seat storage offers easily-accessible space for quickly needed gear, while smaller items such as gloves, tools and safety goggles can be stored in the spacious glove box.

Reliability and serviceability are essential in the field or on the hunt, and Prowler Pro was developed to be a durable and easy-to-maintain work partner. Textron Off Road aggressively tested Prowler Pro for more than 1,000 hours to put the vehicle through its paces. The result is a tried-and-true work side-by-side that’s durable enough to withstand the harshest tasks and conditions.

For ease-of-maintenance, the Prowler Pro has toolless service components with easy-access panels, so the vehicle can spend more time in the field or at hunt camp. For maximum versatility, Textron Off Road offers more than 50 custom-built, easily installed accessories including a truck-inspired cab, a heater kit, body protection, plows, gun scabbards and lighting. Accessory packages include “Geared-Up,” “Expedition” and “Decked-Out” which offer different roof, windshield, protection, lighting, and in-cab accessory options.

Textron Off Road offers the Prowler Pro with standard rack-and-pinion steering and 12-inch steel wheels in Marsh Green for $11,399 U.S. and $14,199 Canadian dollars. The Prowler Pro XT comes in Dynamic Charcoal or Fire Red and includes electronic power steering and 14-inch machined aluminum wheels for $12,999 U.S. and $16,199 Canadian dollars. All vehicles are sold with a 12-month warranty and will be available in dealerships in May.

BRPs Can-Am UTV/Side-by-Side Dealers Highest Ranked by 2018 Pied Piper Prospect Satisfaction Index® (PSI®)

Can-Am dealerships were the top ranked brand in the newly released 2018 Pied Piper Prospect Satisfaction Index® (PSI®) U.S. UTV Industry Benchmarking Study. The study measured treatment of Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) shoppers who visited a dealership, with rankings by brand determined by the Pied Piper PSI process, which ties “mystery shopping” measurement and scoring to industry sales success.

For more than ten years, the automotive and motorcycle industries have used PSI “mystery shopping” as a tool to improve the sales effectiveness of their dealer networks, turning more shoppers into buyers. From a customer’s perspective, top scoring brands and dealerships are considered “more helpful,” resulting on average in greater customer loyalty. 2018 marks the first time that Pied Piper applied PSI’s fact-based approach to research and then measure the sales effectiveness of the UTV market.

Disclaimer: Can-Am received the highest numerical score in the proprietary 2018 Pied Piper Prospect Satisfaction Index® (PSI®) U.S. UTV Industry Study. Study based on 1,168 mystery shops applying the proprietary Pied Piper PSI process, measuring 18 UTV-brand’s dealer networks between July 2017 and April 2018. Your experiences may vary. Can-Am Racing Update

SxS Spring National
Can-Am / XPS Lubricants / CT Race Worx pilot Kyle Chaney, who competed in a brand-new Can-Am Maverick X3 side-by-side he built for woods racing, swept both Pro Modified events during the inaugural SXS Spring Nationals, a special two-day event held at US Air Motorsports Raceway in Shawano, Wis.

The course was made up of an asphalt racing surface of a drift car / karting circuit that then led into a short-course dirt track. Chaney, 2017 TORC series Pro Mod champion, was over three seconds faster than the rest of the field in qualifying. Then, in Saturday’s race he led every lap from the pole. On day two, Sunday, Chaney started fourth due to the invert, but took over second on lap two and then owned lead one lap later. He held on for the win from there.

“My Can-Am Maverick X3 side-by-side vehicle did awesome this weekend,” explained Chaney. “We just put fuel in the car, lowered it for the course and went out ran it. These EVO-tuned cars are just so fast. I have to give it up to them. Hopefully we can take it out to GNCC in two weeks and get another win.”

Can-Am / XPS Lubricants / CT Race Worx / Rival Motorsports driver Scottie Lawrence, who drove Chaney’s 2017 championship-winning Maverick X3 vehicle, scored a fourth and third-place finishes in the SXS Pro Modified main events on the weekend.

ULTRA4 Racing
Beau Judge, filling in the for an absent Phil Blurton, won the 2018 Ultra4 MetalCloak Stampede held May 11-12, at Prairie City State Vehicle Recreation Area near Cordova, Calif. Blurton and Judge usually team up to compete in the No. 944 No Limit / XPS Lubricants / Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R vehicle in the Best In The Desert series. Blurton also decided to enter the ULTRA4 series this season after a successful rock debut with the vehicle at the 2018 King of the Hammers event. However, due to a prior commitment for Blurton, Judge had to replace his friend and drive solo for this event.

Ultra4 Racing rules allow for one substitute driver during the season, so Judge took over driving duties this time and did not disappoint on the rugged two-mile course that consisted of tight turns, whoops, jumps, high-speed runs and tricky rock sections. After qualifying second, Judge won his heat to set himself up for a first-row start in the six-lap main event. While other competitors dropped out of the race, Judge led from start to finish to notch the victory.

“The Can-Am Maverick X3 X RC Turbo R race vehicle was the perfect platform for this type of course,” said Beau Judge to reporters after the race. “With 172HP and great suspension, I was able to go fast when I needed to, and the Smart-Lok four-wheel drive system kept all four tires pulling in the rocks.”

GNCC
Can-Am Renegade X xc 1000R racer Kevin Cunningham remained perfect in 2018, winning is sixth-consecutive Grand National Cross Country 4×4 Pro ATV class event, this time taking the win at the X Factor Whitetails GNCC in Peru, Ind. Cunningham, the defending two-time class champion, was in third place after one lap of action, but took over the lead by lap two. Cunningham kept the lead the rest of the way to notch win No. 6 this year, edging fellow Can-Am racer Landon Wolfe by roughly four seconds. In dominating fashion, Can-Am 4×4 ATV racers swept the 4×4 Pro ATV podium, taking the top six positions in the morning overall, and also won all six 4×4 classes by earning 16 of 18 possible class podiums.

LOORRS
Corry Weller (DragonFire Racing / Can-Am / Weller / Maxxis) used a savvy, late-race pass on the outside of turn one to win the Production Turbo class, May 5, at Round 3 of the Lucas Oil Regional series in her hometown of Chandler, Ariz.

Weller, who drew her preferred start on the outside of row one against 14 other racers, began the race by tucking in behind Can-Am Maverick X3 vehicle driver and teammate Paul O’Brien, who led for much of the race. From here, the multi-time short-course champion used her skills and took full advantage of her Can-Am vehicle’s impressive power to continually reel in the leader, seeking a perfect moment to make a pass. She got her shot on the white flag lap, as she caught O’Brien in turn three and drew up alongside of him through turn four. The two Can-Am pilots drag raced neck-and-neck down the front straight until Weller made her pass for the lead around turn one. She held her lead until they crossed the finish line on lap 10, bringing home another impressive win and increasing her class points lead.

“I have almost a 20-point lead for the championship right now and I hope to keep that going for the rest of the season,” said Weller. “On a technical side of things, everything on my Can-Am Maverick X3 vehicle is holding up well. It’s nice to get another win and also post the fastest lap time in my class.”

SCRAMBLER DYNAMIX MAKES SENSE

0

So far we’re really impressed with the DYNAMIX suspension offered on several RZR models, particularly the all-new RZR 1000 Turbo S.

This techy masterpiece has evolved performance to a new level delivering arguably the smoothest ride in the pure sport SxS category.

Being the curious minds we are, we have to wonder if Polaris engineers are already testing out variations of DYNAMIX specifically for the Polaris Scrambler.

This makes sense as the Scrambler XP1K sits at the pinnacle of Polaris’ 4WD Sport Performance ATV lineup and riders could totally benefit from a DYNAMIX equipped Scrambler.

If you haven’t already heard, DYNAMIX continuously adapts suspension by offering on-the-fly shock tuning hundreds of times per second.

Imagine pinning the throttle of your Scrambler XP1K and ripping down the gnarliest terrain while DYNAMIX adjusts compression damping automatically to deliver the smoothest ride ever.

DYNAMIX also combats body roll by immediately compensating the outside shocks to keep the vehicle level as you navigate sharp corners.

It also recognizes when the ATV is airborne and detects the shocks’ full rebound then compensates to full hard to deliver the smoothest landing before retuning to your preset level. No need to to make manual adjustments before taking your Scrambler out on the track for some airtime.

Without question, a sport performance 4-wheeler would benefit from it but there’s the obvious challenge of nailing the sweet spot between any increase in weight vs. the performance gain – and then there’s cost.

We think this could be a winner and knowing the progressive nature of Polaris, we‘d bet the mortgage this one’s already being tested.

Stay tuned.

OFF-ROAD SUSPENSION SET-UP MADE EASY!

0

We thought you might like some input on simply and easily setting up your suspension for maximum ride results. These suggestions apply to both SxSs and ATVs and give you a basic understanding of where to start from when adjusting things.

Consider this: There are two elements of your suspension that you may or may not have control over: First is spring tension, second is shock damping.

1. Lets talk about spring tension. Your off-road vehicle usually has either snail cam adjusters on each coilover shock or “progressive wind” threaded adjusters that can increase spring tension. Winding up these adjusters has more to do with adjusting spring preload than changing the whole rate of the spring as it travels from full extension to full compression.

Preload is really only affected in the first couple of inches of travel and sets the static height of the vehicle when the vehicle is not moving but has its rider and cargo in place.

Generally, cranking up the preload will not make your ATV or SxS ride stiffer. Those spring rates are set at the factory and they are what they are.

If you want a stiffer or softer ride as it pertains to springs, you’ll need to go to either the OEM or a spring expert and purchase coilover springs with a different rate.

Frankly, this is rarely necessary as factory spring rates are almost always within the ballpark.

When we set up a suspension on a stock vehicle, we like to start our adjustments with the preload backed off completely.

In this way, we know we can add more preload when we get our shock damping adjusted properly.

2. Shock damping is the most critical element of suspension tuning – provided you have springs that match rider and cargo weight.

Many off-road vehicles have no damping adjusters on their shocks and that sucks if you need ride improvement. For the ones that do have adjusters (and definitely more SxS models have damping adjustable shocks than ATVs do), you need to start by setting your damping adjusters to the softest setting.

Take the vehicle for a ride with the payload (including an extra rider if necessary) you’d normally be carrying and determine where and when the suspension is bottoming-out.

Determine if you’re bottoming out at low speed – if you are, you’ll need to start adding more compression damping. Now speed up. If your low speed damping is good but you bottom out when you’re going faster, move the compression damping adjusters up one notch and test ride again.

Work on all four corners of the machine at the same time and keep moving the damping adjusters at single increments until you’re satisfied. Do not go crazy and move your damping adjusters a bunch of notches at a time. This will only confuse things.

After you’ve got the compression damping set close to what you want, determine if you need to adjust front versus rear. If this is the case, only move the front or rear adjusters one notch at a time separately and then retest.

We’ve only talked about compression damping and have avoided rebound dampening adjustments – simply because very few stock off-road vehicles offer both adjustments.

Yes, the testing process can be tedious and time consuming, but it’s definitely worth the work!

Logan Gastel Wins Silver State 300 In Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R Side-By-Side Vehicle

– Phil Blurton Posts Runner-Up Finish To Take Over UTV Turbo Class Points Lead
– Can-Am Racers Currently Top Three in Points*

Can-Am Maverick X3 side-by-side vehicle racer Logan Gastel won the 2018 Best In The Desert Silver State 300 race this past weekend in outside Alamo, Nev. Gastel, who has been racing in the series for three seasons, notched his first career overall win in the series in a near stock Can-Am off-road vehicle.

Starting outside the top 10 at the 300-mile point-to-point BITD Silver State 300 race in Nevada, Can-Am / Rugged Radios / Summers Bros. / ITP racer Logan Gastel knew he had to run a nearly flawless race to find a spot on the podium, but was confident in his vehicle and his own abilities. Gastel has been steadily improved his game over his five total years of desert racing and three in the BITD series. The pro driver from Highland, Calif., who drives the No. 969 Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R vehicle, put in a time 06:05:00.300 to notch his first BITD victory.

“Starting 19th we knew we had our work cut out for us, so we pushed the car hard to run down our Can-Am teammate, Phil Blurton, and to come out on top — still feels like a dream,” said Gastel. “Our Maverick X3 race vehicle ran flawless all day, like it always does. The Silver State 300 is like a mini Vega-2-Reno race. I really like racing it, as I always seem to do really well.”

Gastel, who moved all the way up to third place in the class standings after his win, runs a 2017 Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R side-by-side vehicle that he calls one of the most stock vehicles in the class.

“It’s really 99% stock, aside from the all the aluminum and mandatory BITD changes. By stock, I mean we run a stock drivetrain, stock clutch, stock ECM and even the frame underneath everything is stock,” he said. “It’s just so competitive and reliable, always giving us a chance to finish.”

Can-Am / No Limit RD / XPS racer Phil Blurton, the reigning BITD UTV Production Turbo class champion, put his Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R side-by-side vehicle on the podium, taking second place. The additional points at this event also means Blurton took over the class points lead after the race. Derek and Jason Murray, Can-Am / ITP / Lone Star Racing / Murray Racing, finished seventh, but currently hold down second overall in the points race. That gives Can-Am the top three spots in the UTV Turbo ranks, not counting throw outs.

The next BITD event for Can-Am racers is the popular Vegas to Reno event, Aug. 15-18 in Nevada.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (May 1, 2018) – Now open to beach patrols from Long Island to Virginia Beach, Red Bull Surf + Rescue returns to Atlantic City, New Jersey on Tuesday, July 17th for the fourth year in a row. Red Bull Surf + Rescue is the premiere lifeguarding event on the East Coast, challenging 50 teams of elite ocean athletes over four rounds of competition to crown the champion patrol on the Mid-Atlantic Coast. This year’s competition will feature more intense competition, a new-four round elimination format and the biggest awards in the event’s history at a new venue directly in front of Bungalow Beach.

Eligible teams consist of four professional lifeguards including at least one female athlete. All of the competing athletes must be current members of the beach patrol they represent, with the exception of one alumnus per team. The 2018 contest format consists of traditional lifeguarding disciplines with a new Red Bull Rescue Championship Round that will bring all four team members together in a brutal, back to back rescue scenario combining the skills demanded of ocean lifeguards on beaches around the world.

“Red Bull Surf + Rescue not only showcases the athletic prowess and ocean skills of the professional guards protecting our shores every summer, but also pays tribute to the passion and commitment of those who make protecting our communities and our oceans their priority,” says Red Bull Surf + Rescue Technical Director Bruckner Chase. “This year may prove to be the highest level of competition we have ever seen, and the Champion patrol will be tested like never before.”

In this year’s four-round competition, each patrol will compete in at least two rounds. Round 1 features all 50 teams in a 250-meter box course Surf Swim Relay. The top 25 teams advance to the Round 2 ‘A’ Pool with the bottom 25 teams advancing to the Round 2 ‘B’ pool. Round 2 will challenge the teams to a 500-meter apex Paddleboard Relay with the top 14 teams from Pool “A” and the top 2 teams from Pool “B” advancing to Round 3. Sixteen teams will start Round 3’s Run/Run/Surf Swim/ Paddleboard Relay with the top 8 teams moving on to the final, Championship Round. In this final round the remaining teams will complete a unique Red Bull Rescue format comprised of a grueling double rescue scenario of a Paddle Pick-up and Swim Rescue with all four team members crossing the line together to claim the 2018 Red Bull Surf + Rescue title.

The winning beach patrol will receive a 2018 Polaris® GENERAL® 4 1000. This machine embodies the athletes and teams competing for it. With the hardworking heart of a RANGER® and the performance of a RZR®, this vehicle will enhance surf and rescue teams. They can now boost their beach coverage, and allow beachgoers the added confidence to enjoy their adventure.

Atlantic City, New Jersey is home to one of the oldest beach patrols in the country where the history of ocean lifeguarding can be traced back to the late 1800’s. For over a century, top surf lifesaving athletes have honed their abilities off the beaches of Atlantic City and along The Jersey Shore, making it the ideal location for this fourth annual clash of the titans.
