Can-Am / Murray Racing pilot Jason Murray piloted the brand new Maverick X3 side-by-side vehicle to the UTV Unlimited Pro class victory at the 2016 Best In The Desert Vegas To Reno race in Las Vegas, Nev.

The all-new, bold Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R side-by-side vehicle won its debut race just four short days after its worldwide unveiling in Orlando, Fla.

“It’s impressive to earn such a defining victory in our first official race with the new Maverick X3. The Murray Racing team was outstanding in the Nevada desert and their class victories continue to prove Can-Am is a clear leader in performance side-by-side vehicles,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “Our BITD racing teams started with the most race-ready platform in history, with the Can-Am Maverick X3. Although they added the necessary safety and racing equipment, the new X3 race builds remained mostly stock.”

The Murray Racing brothers Jason and Derek Murray competed in two different classes in two different Can-Am Maverick turbo vehicles. Jason Murray drove the No. 2927 Can-Am Maverick X3, while his brother Derek piloted the No. 917 Maverick MAX Turbo.

Jason earned a statement-making victory with the all-new Can-Am Maverick X3 side-by-side vehicle in its first official race. Derek drove his Maverick to victory in the Turbo Pro Production class and a third-place overall amongst all UTV classes.

The Can-Am / Murray Racing teams outlasted 60-some other entrants and 650 miles of brutal desert terrain to stand atop the podium in two separate classes at the Vegas To Reno race, which BITD calls “the longest off-road race in the United States.”

“The new Maverick X3 side-by-side vehicle is simply amazing and the closest thing to a race-ready vehicle from a major manufacturer,” said Jason Murray, after his BITD win. “We are so excited to have finished Vegas to Reno after 650 miles in the new Can-Am Off-Road Maverick X3 in its first race. To top that off, we scored two huge first-in-class victories.”

The Murray brothers lightly modified their Maverick X3 X rs vehicle with a Lonestar Racing cage, doors and bumpers and necessary safety equipment required by the BITD. S3 Racing, Dustin Jones and Shane Dowden, also competed in the BITD race.

They added an S3 cage, doors and bumpers and the required safety equipment. However, both of the Maverick X3 racing vehicles remained mostly stock by using the factory-equipped driveline, FOX shocks, suspension arms, 154-hp Rotax ACE triple-cylinder engine, QRS-X CVT, steering componentry and differentials.

Can-Am Maverick X3 accessory providers include Lonestar Racing, Beard Seats, Yoshimura, Baja Designs, Rugged Radios and SCS Unlimited.

DEFINING A VALUE ATV

0

Part of what we do is to place a real-world value on the vehicles we test. We ask ourselves: Is this vehicle worth what it costs to buy?

Sometimes the answer’s yes, sometimes it’s no and sometimes it’s that a vehicle is worth far more than it costs.

The interesting thing is what’s valuable to one person, may be worthless to another. If the vehicle doesn’t do what you need it to do is it still a good value?

There are two types of value that need to be considered when you’re buying an ATV.

First is price versus features, which is a tangible value you can measure because it’s based on numbers. If you line up a bunch of ATVs and compare them based strictly on their specs you’re getting for the price they cost, you can easily find a winner.

The second is Real World Usefulness, which is entirely personal and subjective. Let’s say you have an Arctic Cat Alterra 450 sitting in front of you. It boasts an adequate list of features and performs quite well on the trail and as long as you’re taking its low price into consideration, it rates high in the price versus specifications category.

However, let’s say you’re a recreational rider who puts on big miles in places like Hatfield McCoy or Brimstone Recreation where the trails are wide and relatively fast. A 450 may not be as fast as you like and therefore, not well suited for you no matter what it costs. That particular engine size may just not be as useful for you in the real world whereras a more expensive ATV with more horsepower and more touring features would rate higher for you despite its higher price.

The flip side of this is equally as true. If you’re the kind of guy who takes the kids for rides on the weekend, does yard work, pulls around a bush buggy and occasionally goes for a longer trail ride, an Outlander 1000 isn’t really good value for you because its not practical in your world. It has huge horsepower, awesome features, incredible capabilities and tons of cool factor, but it would also rip up your lawn, be hard to ride slow with the kids and be overkill for your occasional trail ride.

Of course, it is true that a few ATVs are universally high on value. An ATV that’s capable in nearly every situation with a price that is realistically affordable for almost anyone, is a hidden gem in this industry and if you looked up the definition of the word “value” in the dictionary, you’d find a picture of one of these vehicles staring back at you.

So, this gives you a bit of insight into how we look at the ATVs we test. More importantly it gives you the key to translate our reviews so they answer your specific questions as they relate to value for you. You can read or watch any of our reviews, listen carefully to what we’re saying and convert that information into a conclusion that’s specific to your situation.

YAMAHA HEATED GRIPS

0

Yeah, we’re right in the middle of a heat wave BUT cooler weather is just around the corner and the fall riding season just might be our favourite time of year to be out on the trails.

Leaves are changing colour, the air is crisp and cool and temperatures are much more comfortable, but even though you can add an extra layer of clothing to keep yourself warm and even with thicker gloves your hands are still going to get cold. So why not prepare your Yamaha ATV with a set of heated grips.

This simple plug and play design means no cutting, splicing or crimping wires and requires no glue during installation. There’s also a 3-position toggle featuring off, low and high so you can moderate heat as your day transitions from a colder morning to a more comfortable midday ride.

Best of all, the grip’s low power consumption draws less than 3 amps while in use so it won’t put a significant strain on your battery.

2017 POLARIS TRI-MODE THROTTLE

0

Faced with the issue of keeping the 91 ponies found in the 2017 Sportsman XP 1000 under some kind of measurable control Polaris has added a tri-mode DBW (drive by wire) throttle control.

Make no mistake about it, tri-mode DBW is exceptionally functional, given the aforementioned horsepower numbers. Simply toggle to the throttle response mode you prefer for the terrain and riding style you’re participating in on any given day.

If picking your way through a rocky streambed is mandatory, select the softer, less edgy response mode. The engine will respond seamlessly and you’ll appreciate a well behaved 91 stallions.

All day trail touring activity is best handled with the mid-response mode. The engine feels stout and responsive but the beast is contained in a mid-size cage.

If it’s time to rip up a fire road where you’re in and out of the throttle with heavy modulation, go for the full monty mode. It’ll make your inputs near telepathic with immediate, abrupt and satisfying response.

We have a unique perspective on DBW, multi-mode throttles since our sister publication Supertrax is snowmobiling’s number one international magazine. Here’s our point – the snowmobile industry has been messing around with DBW throttles and coincidentally, multi-mode throttles for three years with mixed results.

We haven’t been overwhelmed by the feel of the DBW throttles from Ski-Doo (makers of Can-Am SXS and ATVs). While there is an argument for these electronic throttlesthat allow for different user profiles to take advantage of different engine attributes, we’ve heard mixed responses.

The sno-mo tri-mode DBW systems play to “eco”, “normal” and “sport” driving preferences. Honestly, we use “sport” ninety percent of the time.

The snowmobile rental business loves these DBW selectable throttles and sets them up so they stay in “eco” mode to limit power. Parents like the concept as well, training youths to ride in the least aggressive throttle mode is a desirable feature of tri-mode DBW.

We think the sno-mo biz could benefit from looking at the Polaris DBW throttle. Our impression of Polaris’ tri-mode throttle is positive at this writing. Stay tuned.

2017 Honda Pioneer 700 and 500

0

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today that the Pioneer 700 and Pioneer 500 side-by-sides receive a long list of significant new features for the 2017 model year.

Honda’s midsize and entry side-by-sides have already been big hits, and they now offer customers additional options that make them even more appealing.

Two new feature-laden Deluxe models are added to the Pioneer 700 lineup, while the number-one-selling entry-level side-by-side Pioneer 500 gets a new automatic shifting mode and other changes.

“We know that customers of side-by-side vehicles place a high priority on features, and with the updates we’ve made to the Pioneer 700 and 500, we expect these models to be even more popular than they already have been,” said Lee Edmunds, Manager of Motorcycle Marketing Communications at American Honda. “Now both models give drivers the option of shifting manually or relying on the automatic transmission, and the new Pioneer 700 Deluxe and Pioneer 700-4 Deluxe bring exciting options to the midsize class.”

PIONEER 700

Already a popular model in the growing midsize side-by-side market, the Pioneer 700 gets even better for 2017, as the lineup now includes new Deluxe options for the Pioneer 700 and Pioneer 700-4. These Deluxe models boast features like aluminum wheels, electric power steering and painted suspension springs.

In addition, the Deluxe models’ fully automatic transmission now comes with a manual mode that can be activated via a new dash-mounted toggle switch; use the steering-column-mounted paddle shifters to change gears while in manual mode, or to override shift points on the fly while in automatic mode. Deluxe models also get painted plastic for a bright, durable finish, while all Pioneer 700s receive a new bumper, fascia and graphics.

Both 700-4 models still boast the industry’s first QuickFlip™ seating design, which allows the two rear seats to fold into the bed so that owners can select between two-, three- or four-seat configurations.

A comfortable, reliable and versatile machine, this workhorse can also be dressed up, modified and personalized by choosing from the full line of more than 50 Honda Genuine Accessories/Honda Signature Accessories.

PIONEER 500

The industry’s top-selling entry side-by-side gets even better for 2017, as Honda’s Pioneer 500 now boasts a new transmission mode that can change between fully automatic and manual-electric-shift modes via a new toggle switch.

For simple driving, owners can just push the accelerator and go. For more control, the steering-column-mounted paddles can be used to shift manually, or to override automatic shift points on the fly. Also new for 2017 are dual-rate suspension springs, providing a plush ride while still being resistant to bottoming.

As always, the compact Pioneer 500 has a narrow 50-inch width that lets customers transport it in a full-size pickup-truck bed and ride it on recreational trails that have width restrictions. From longtime off-road enthusiasts to new side-by-side drivers, the Pioneer 500 is an instant favorite for work or recreation.

Different jobs, terrain, and adventures mean it only makes sense to fine-tune your Honda Pioneer to your specific needs. A full line of high-quality Honda accessories are available to make your Pioneer even better.
