2017 POLARIS SPORTSMAN XP 1000

0

Polaris is not the least bit shy of publishing specific output numbers for their powersport’s vehicles.

The magic number for the new Sportsman XP 1000 in all it’s variants is ninety-one. Ninety-one horsepower. That’s a formidable number which stands at the top of the ATV marketplace virtually unequalled in any modern ATV including Pure Sport models.

If you think you’ve pulled the trigger on some quick 4-wheelers let me clear something up for you. Most corn fed ATV’ers will only dream of the sensation generated from cracking the loud handle on this powerhouse.

When you open the throttles on the 1K Sportsman gasoline begins turning into adrenaline at an alarming rate. Might be time to tighten up your adult diaper.

This ATV plain honks, rocks, jams and flies.

2017 POLARIS RIDE COMMAND

0

Available from the factory on select RZR models and as a dealer installed accessory on all RZR’s the new Ride Command system offers full integration and control of your Go Pro, Blue Tooth connectivity with your riding Buds and GPS connectivity.

Think about this scenario. When it’s super dusty you simply let your riding friends leave ten minutes before you and follow them on the big 7-inch dash mounted Ride Command screen.

If you’re faking sick and out riding there’s complete Bluetooth connectivity to your smartphone so you receive and send messages like you’re at your desk – but you aren’t – you’re riding on company time!

Ride command is different – it’s designed for off roaders – it’s not some off-the-shelf automotive gadget screwed into the dash of a RZR.

What does Ride Command mean to the sport? It means riders can literally be connected – sharing, capturing and making experiences all day.

Go Pro control is exponentially improved with Ride Command making the mandatory drill of taping every ride a simple task.

The concept of letting your riding pals get ahead or behind you or just being able to know your crew is safe back at base camp while watching their progress on your Ride Command screen is priceless.

This general concept was pioneered by Polaris snowmobile division using the handle “Rider X” to interface with a Bluetooth/GPS in dash screen. Polaris has monetized the system with available updates and databases (maps) for use with Rider X. Look for this to be part of Ride Command in the future.

Ride Command isn’t just a new idea. It isn’t just another twist on technology. Ride Command is MY 17’s biggest deal. Everyone else is going to have to catch up. Fast

Yamaha Takes Us to School

0

Gunsite Academy, near Paulden, Arizona, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and DirtTrax was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take part in another defensive firearms training course thanks to Yamaha’s generous invitation.

The collaborative group of companies who helped make this week possible included Yamaha, Ruger Firearms, Galco Gun Leather, Garmin, Prime Ammo, BLACKHAWK! and others.

Gunsite offers firearms training to elite military personnel, law enforcement officers and citizens of verifiable character.

Gunsite’s expert instruction sets this training facility apart as you get individual, professional guidance from highly qualified, supportive instructors in a friendly yet challenging atmosphere every step of the way.

Each instructor has countless of high-level training in law enforcement and/or military, so to say they are “qualified” is really an understatement.

Responsible use is something you’ll hear from the moment you step foot in the class room and every time you visit one of Gunsite’s ranges. “With each right comes an equal responsibility to discharge that right effectively, legally, safely and within the bounds of morality. Rights demand responsibility.”

When we had a break from the intensive firearm training, Yamaha allowed us to ride (guided, for obvious reasons) the seats off two of its hottest products, the 2016 Grizzly and Wolverine.

A full report of our Gunsite experience, as well as more opinions on the Grizz and Wolverine are coming up in the October issue of DirtTrax Magazine.

We will also be sprinkling related stories here and there on ATVmag.com so keep checking in.

KIMPEX TIRE/WHEEL COMBO

0

Every wheel and tire combo has its intended purpose and is designed to work best in specific situations. So, making sure your rolling on a set of rubber that best suits where and how you ride will ensure you get the most out of your off road conveyance.

Our project 2016 Grizzly 700 is being designed to go anywhere and look good doing so. One of our chief concerns is reliability getting through sharp rocks and deep marsh crossings. After one call, Kimpex set us up with the perfect combination for wheels and tires from MSA and Arisun.

Arisun tires feature differing levels of Aramid reinforced composite construction, which provide the ultimate level of protection against pinch flats and punctures. The Bruiser XT line of tires is an 8 ply construction which also incorporates their K4D level of defense.

This is Comprised of two layers of nylon for the base then a layer of special nylon plus composite material that wraps around shoulder protecting the sidewall along with a belt of high strength Aramid which protects the tire against punctures.

The radial tires construction with Direction chevron tread also produces a balanced tire with large contact surface, which confidently handles any terrain.

Dressing up our ride is MSA’s M23 Battle wheel. This is one solution design that offers up a tough design and rugged performance. With their 4-spoke design and flat black finish we definitely nailed it in the looks department. Nice little details like the chrome star center cap and faux beadlock look really make them stand out and the all-terrain tough flat black automotive grade paint will withstand the gnarliest terrain keeping them looking pristine.

KAWASAKI MULE SX

0

We recently had the opportunity to travel to California’s central coast to ride Kawasaki’s MULE SX and get a better feel for its target market.

Seriously, if you’re expecting wheel spinning, high-speed action, you’re going to be disappointed. The MULE SX simply isn’t that type of vehicle… not at all. However, Kawasaki stands firmly behind the MULE SX’s intended user and feels strongly it’s a market Kawasaki dominates.

Lets take a look at what it offers: Supplying power to the ground is a 401cc air-cooled single churning out a mind-bending 13.5-horsepower. This carbureted engine provides smooth and easy-going conveyance – perfect for ranch owners with relatively light duties or families with younger, less experienced riders that still want to get out for a drive.

This decidedly mellow engine chugs along and does what’s expected of it capably, navigating hilly countryside and smooth, even pathways exactly like we experienced surrounding the beautiful Ancient Peaks Winery.

The cab features an adjustable tilt steering with a comfortable thick grip steering wheel plus a plush bench seat with a lap belt. The durable textured floor can handle abuse from muddy boots and hoses out nicely.

Load up the steel cargo bed with up to 400 pounds of cargo – anything from plants for gardening to hunting gear and hitch up 1,100-pounds of gear to haul wherever you feel your MULE SX can take you. It may not get you there bullet fast, but it’ll do the trick. It also features selectable 2/4WD and a dual mode rear differential for added traction when required.

The MULE SX has a McPherson strut front suspension and a one-piece swing axle rear suspension. With only 6.7-inches of ground clearance you’re pretty much forced to remember this vehicle is not made for aggressive trail riding.

However, this set-up does do an admirable job of providing a decent ride experience and fits perfectly into the expectations of a buyer looking for a light-duty UTV in this horsepower range. It’s really ideal for getting you and a friend out to a watering hole for a day of fishing, lugging gear out to your hunt camp or loading up the cargo bed with a sprayer implement.

The MULE SX is capable and we give Kawasaki credit for recognizing the needs of this segment and providing a vehicle that fits it so well. Another bonus is the MULE SX’s ridiculously enticing Kawasaki STRONG 3-Year Limited Warranty.

WHAT IS THE X-3?

0

The last week has seen a storm of new product releases from Polaris for its incredible 2017 line-up and alongside that excitement comes a teaser from Can-Am for an all-new side-x-side. The big questions remain, what is it and where is Can-Am taking us on August 16th?

We’re guessing X-3 is the generational naming convention of this new rig. However, maybe it refers to the seat layout or number of engine cylinders? Only Can-Am knows for sure at this point, but let’s take a few moments to work through this. Right, wrong or indifferent we’ll know just how close we got in a few short weeks.

Can-Am is pushing limits in many categories, but it’s no surprise the Commander has been around the longest. Is it possible with the release and wide acceptance of the Polaris General and now the 2017 General-4, Can-Am has created a new version of this sport ute and is taking a defensive stance with an ultra sporty yet utility-capabable Maverick based vehicle?

Maybe, but from the first teaser video we think it looks too wide to be a sport utility side-x-side, which leads us away from the 3-seater rumors that’ve been floating around.

The wide wheels sticking out past the fenders in teaser #1 suggest it’s sporty, the aggressive power-sliding would lend to that notion as well and what looks to be sand on the ground again heads down the road of ultimate pure sport buggy.

So if this is the case has Can-Am walked away from the chassis fundamentals of the current Maverick? Probably not. There’s a lot invested in the Maverick’s design and it’s a good vehicle in both two and 4-seat configurations.

However, the interior layout of the Maverick has always been a point of argument with performance drivers and the turbocharged 1000 Rotax can’t have that much left under the hood to boost past Polaris’ 144 HP 1000 XP Turbo, so what is the X-3?

Much like the RZR XP evolved from the base RZR design, the X-3 is going to be the competition-crusher that Can-Am Pure sport enthusiasts have been waiting for.

Expect to see a full overhaul of the entire vehicle from frame and suspension to cockpit layout and engine design. The seating position would need to be dropped to the floor and reclined into an aggressive Wildcat like layout, while the motor package would be sent further back in the chassis.

When you dig into the available motor packages from Rotax there’s a lot to choose from. While we can only hope one day a manufacturer puts a 2-stroke into any new offroad vehicle we doubt we’ll see it happening anytime soon. So with that said a motor like the Rotax 904 producing 105 HP could be the answer and with a supercharger mounted to it, well you could be in neighborhoor of a 150 horsepower.

Another possibility would be the V-twin 998cc Spyder motor with the tune up the Aprilia RSV Mille received at 143 HP, that’s a Rotax naturally aspirated motor built for a high performance motorcycle.

A turbo or supercharger on that motor would capably and reliably push horsepower in the 160 horsepower range without an issue.

At the end of the day we are all left speculating untilthe sheets are pulled off at the BRP dealer show on the 16th of August. Can-Am won’t sit still for too long and with Polaris pushing so hard to stay in first place, the only attack plan with a competitor this strong is a full frontal assault with a vehicle that doesn’t just compare, but aims to dominate it in every way like the 2016 Can-Am Defender did with the XP 900 Ranger.

There’s one thing you don’t want to do and that’s underestimate the potential of BRP’s incredible engineering team. There’s never been a shortage of rabbits to pull out of their collective hats!
