CREAMER WINS PRO AND PRO-AM CLASSES AT ROUND SIX

Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 racer Josh Creamer won both the Pro and Pro-Am classes at round six of the New England ATV Motocross Series in Minot, Maine. BCS Performance / Can-Am DS 450 racer Cody Miller joined Creamer on both podiums, finishing third in both classes.

“Josh continues to amaze us on how talented of a rider he actually is. This season he’s has adapted very quickly to the Can-Am DS 450 and continues to get faster each race,” said Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “This past weekend Josh was in championship form and rode hard on his way to winning all four motos.”

Creamer had a challenging first moto after a battle with the current Pro-class points leader. After grabbing the holeshot in moto one, Creamer lost the lead only to regain it again as the leader made a mistake. Then in the second Pro moto, Creamer used the power from his Motoworks-prepped DS 450 to grab another holeshot and lead wire-to-wire for the victory. The two-moto sweep moved Creamer to within 14 points of the Pro class leader.

“I had a great weekend. I came out here to win and that’s just what I did,” said Creamer. “I had a good run this weekend and now I am looking forward to Southwick. That’s a bit longer track and it’s pretty sandy, so I’m going to be training a little harder for that round.”

In Pro-Am class action, Miller grabbed the moto-one holeshot, but was quickly passed by Creamer and another rider. Miller held off another rider for a hard-fought third place. The second Pro-Am moto started with another Creamer holeshot and victory. Miller was in second for much of the race, but eventually dropped to third and ended the day with a 4-3 score in the Pro ranks for third overall.

NATALIE REMAINS POINTS LEADER WITH UNADILLA PODIUM

Motoworks / Can-Am Pro ATV racer John Natalie maintained his AMA ATV MX Championship points lead by finishing third overall at the AMA ATV MX Championship held at Unadilla outside of New Berlin, N.Y. Canadian Can-Am X-Team DS 450 racer Richard Pelchat finished fifth overall in his first AMA race of 2011.

“John successfully preserved his Pro class points lead with another podium-worthy performance at Unadilla,” said Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “He put in valiant performance in the second moto, despite the rough, rocky and tight passing conditions, to finish second and keep his championship points lead.”

Natalie, who captured the fastest qualifier award, came out of the moto-one gate in sixth place after he and Chase Snapp were forced wide in turn one. He fought his way into third place later in the race and was challenging for the second-place position. However, with two laps to go, Natalie was forced to slow his pace due to engine issues and finished fifth in the moto. In moto two, Natalie came off the starting line in third and spent the majority of the race trying to pass the second place rider. Finally, with three laps remaining, Natalie made a pass for second place. His 5-2 moto finishes were good for third overall. He now owns just a three-point lead heading into round 10, which is slated for the July 30th weekend at Red Bud in Buchanan, Mich.

“This track was really hard packed and hard to pass, but I gave it my all and we had a great battle out there,” said Natalie. “I’m still recovering from my broken arm, but I am hoping to feel even better at Red Bud and hopefully take the win so I can extend the points lead and take a championship at Loretta’s.”

Canadian Can-Am X-Team DS 450 Pro racer Richard Pelchat made the trip from Saint-Romuald, Quebec, Canada. He came out of the gate in moto one in second place and ended up in seventh place at the checkers. Pelchat jumped out of the gate and into the top five in the second moto. He ended the race in sixth place and finished a very respectable fifth place overall.

In Pro-Am action, Can-Am X-Team DS 450 racer Cole Henry recorded a season-best second overall (4-3) in the Pro-Am Production class. He just missed another podium, tallying a 3-5 combined moto score for fourth overall in Pro-Am Unlimited action. Henry is currently fifth in points in both Pro-Am classes.

The DS 450 also had success in other amateur classes. Chase Henry, Cole’s younger brother, earned an overall victory in the Production A class. Also, former GNC ATV Pro Champion Travis Spader rode his Can-Am DS 450 to three impressive overalls, winning the Open A, Junior 25 Plus and Veteran 30+ classes.

SPORTSMAN 500 HO: DEAL OR NO DEAL

0

In the fall issue of Dirt Trax Magazine (then All-Terrain Vehicle Magazine), our insightful crew badged the Polaris Sportsman 500 HO the Best in Class pick for Best Value ATV in the industry.

Let’s throw a bit of light on this for a second. Polaris’ line-up also includes the premium-priced and ultra slick 550 Sportsman XP that’s jammed to the gills with goodness, but for the budget conscious consumer Polaris offers a “classic” edition 4×4 boasting a 499cc carbureted 4-valve single, McPherson struts up front and rolled IRS that put the Sportsman’s legendary reputation for ride quality on the map.

As we’ve stated before, Polaris’ “old” technology is actually better than some manufacturers’ new tech and in some cases, it would be hard for us to justify shelling out the extra coin for what seems like less offered on competitive brands.

Without question, the Polaris Sportsman 500 HO is a great ATV and the price tag at less than six grand US validates it as our choice for best value.

We’re thinking it would take some pretty smooth talking or an insane incentives package to move a reasonably informed new buyer away from this ATV.

GBC Motorsports, manufacturer of high performance off-road ATV tires, is proud to announce that they have signed on to sponsor the Friday Night Lights ATV Summer Series at Milestone MX.

In addition to supporting the series, GBC Tires will also be raffling off a complete set of GBC Bomb Squad MX tires at each event for amateur racers.

The return of ATV racing last month to the Friday Night Lights series proved to be a major success, with a great turnout and a strong showing of industry support.

The first round, held on June 24, featured great racing in classes from beginner to pro.

“GBC is proud to be a part of the Friday Night Lights ATV Summer Series,” said GBC Motorsport’s Kory Ellis. “We’re excited about supporting local riders and the sport of ATV racing in Southern California, as well as helping Triumph Motorsports put on this great series.”

Nelson Sweeps Two Rounds In Quad-X Series

Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson claimed victory in both rounds five and six of the 2011 Yamaha Quad-X Series presented by STI Tire and Wheel at Glen Helen Raceway over the weekend.

As the season moves into the latter half, Nelson has built a 26-point lead over championship rival Beau Baron, and a 41-point lead over Yamaha teammate Josh Row.

Saturday’s race saw a close battle between the two championship leaders as they went head to head on Glen Helen’s famous USGP track.

Baron managed to steal his first moto victory of the season in moto one, but Nelson fired right back in moto two to take the overall win.

Josh Row rounded out the podium in third, just ahead of Frenchman Jeremie Warnia and South African Dirkie Baard.

Nelson was back on top in Sunday’s race, taking the win in both motos for his second overall win of the weekend.

Baron claimed second overall with 2-2 moto scores while David Haagsma rounded out the podium with scores of 3-3.

The next round of the 2011 Yamaha Quad-X Series will head back to Speedworld MX in Surprise, AZ for the second night race of the year on September 10th.

Polaris Fuel Additives Protect from E-10 Fuels

With today’s Ethanol blended fuels, it is critical to treat the fuel used in vehicles that see limited or intermittent use with a quality fuel stabilizer and carbon clean.

Polaris Fuel Stabilizer and Carbon Clean are designed and tested by the engineers at Polaris Industries to address the negative effects of today’s fuels as well as prevent fuel degradation in all Polaris vehicles.

Fuel Stabilizer- Ethanol-blended fuels such as E10 are more likely to contain water and can start to go bad as soon as they enter your fuel tank.

With vehicles that see limited or intermittent use the moisture content in fuel can surpass the fuel’s ability to hold the water. When this happens, water will separate and pool in the lowest parts of the fuel system resulting in problems such as hard starting, no starting and corrosion.

Polaris Fuel Stabilizer addresses the negative aspects of this process known as phase separation. In short, it is an inexpensive way to protect your Polaris vehicles.

Carbon Clean- Polaris Carbon Clean is a complete fuel treatment and fuel system cleaner combination.

It treats fuel for storage or for vehicles that see intermittent use and removes moisture from fuel. It is designed to address today’s modern Ethanol-blended fuels that tend to absorb moisture easier than non-blended fuels.

Polaris Carbon Clean also cleans valves, sticky rings and carbon deposits. It contains dispersants that break down carbon molecules that build up on internal engine parts and allow them to be burned in the engine and expelled through the exhaust.

Polaris Fuel Stabilizer and Carbon Clean are available at all Polaris dealerships.

FIRST IMPRESSION: G2 Outlander 1000

Nothing exceeds like excess is an addage someone must have sky-written over Valcourt, Quebec.

I mean, come on, how outrageous is it to add even more power to the sport’s most formidable Sport/Utility platform – the Can-Am Outlander 800?

This year BRP not only completely re-engineered the Outlander chassis, adding some very techy suspension tweaks, which in a word spell “P-L-U-S-H”, but they inserted the SXS industry’s most imposing engine in the all-new chassis – the Commander’s 80 degree Vee-1000 EFI twin.

What is this mill capable of when inserted in a 4X4 Sport/Ute ATV? In a word – anything.

To wrap up our first impression of the new G-2 Outlander 1000 let me quote DirtTrax TV’s Luke Lester after riding both the new G-2 800 and 1000 Outlanders: ” I never thought an 800 Outlander felt slow until I rode the new 1000!”. Nuff said.

CAN-AM REDUCES MSRP ON 2012 UNITS

0

If you have a pulse and a wallet, oh and live in Canada, you no doubt are frustrated by the difference in price for the exact same units sold in America vs. Canada.

With the Canadian dollar reaching parity a while back and then recently becoming stronger than an ever-weakening American greenback, stories run rampant of groups of guys going south of the border and bringing back brand new units at a significant savings.

This makes it hard for Canadian dealers to gain traction or credibility for what’s available in their showrooms. In reality their hands are tied and unless selling at a loss, just can’t offer a competitive MSRP to that of American dealers.

Good news though for Canadian buyers though. Can-Am, recognizing a problem has stepped up to the plate and made an across the board slash to Canadian pricing on its ATVs and side-x-sides. Buyers can expect price reductions over last season’s products anywhere from $350 to $1150 (CDN) on 2012 units.

This is big news for Canadians! We’ve even taken a great deal of flack in the past from disgruntled Canadians accusing us of being soft on OEMs over this particular issue.

Though we can’t take credit for this decision by Can-Am, we’re happy to know our readers on this side of the border will see a bit of a break when they visit their local Can-Am dealer.

CAN-AM GOES ELECTRIC

0

Commander Concept Vehicle Looks Ready To Ship

At its innovation festival and dealer convention in the heart of Montreal Canada, BRP knocked our socks off with the introduction of a late stage Electric powered Commander prototype.

When we say late stage, we mean we could have literally driven this side-x-side home – Well at least for 160 miles before stopping for a charge.

Yup, the whisper-quiet Commander Electric’s lithium ion battery pack caries a charge for 160 miles before you’d need to plug it in and the charge is full in two hours European and 4 hours North American.

Further to this, apart from an earthy-looking exterior, the Electric Commander is the exact same as the gas-powered 800 and 1000cc monsters released last season. It’s also jammed with useful goodies like 4-wheel drive, individual locking front and rear diffs and there’s even a turf mode so you wouldn’t rip up your grass.

Lithium ion has its advantages over a lead-acid battery powered side-x-side. Charge power doesn’t fade with lithium ion, nor does the power weaken as it nears the end of its charge.

Another advantage for those of us living in cold-weather climates is that LI batteries aren’t damaged by the cold like a lead-acid battery. You may experience less power, but your vehicle will remain operational when you need it to plow your driveway.

Further to this, the life expectancy of a lithium ion battery is ten years. This means that you won’t have to shell out to replace 14 lead-acid cell batteries after several years due to faded capacity.

One issue that immediately stands out to us is the price tag. Lithium ion batteries would bump up the sticker price significantly on an already likely-higher-than-average unit.

Though there is a market for a high-end electric vehicle on a global scale, we suspect that when this unit finally does make it to market, a more economical lead-acid battery version will accompany it to offer buyer’s a choice similar to an 800 or 1000 Commander.
