Can-Am victorious at 2011 WORCS Opener

0

Team Motoworks / Can-Am had an excellent opening to its 2011 World Off-Road Championship Series race season as factory driver Mark Holz piloted his Can-Am Commander 1000 side-by-side vehicle to the Class 1 victory in front of some of the best side-by-drivers in North America.

His teammate, Jeremie Warnia also took the Pro-class victory on his Can-Am DS 450 ATV completing the weekend sweep of the premier classes by Motoworks / Can-Am.

“I’m extremely proud of Mark Holz as he drove excellently this past weekend to earn the Motoworks / Can-Am Commander 1000 a victory at the opener of this highly competitive race series,” said Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “As demonstrated with Warnia and his DS 450 victory as well, the team’s preparation and testing has definitely paid off and I’m looking forward to many more victories in what will surely be a very exciting season.”

In the side-by-side race, Holz quickly passed for the lead during the first lap and never looked back. At the end of the race, he and his Commander 1000 were nearly two minutes ahead of the nearest competitor; he also had the fastest lap of the race as well.

Warnia looked extremely fast in practice and backed it up by passing for the lead on the first lap of the Pro ATV race on his DS 450 and fought off the competition. His teammate and defending champion, Josh Frederick, took third in the Pro class on his DS 450.

“With the Class 1 victory and two spots on the Pro ATV podium, it was an exciting weekend in the pits,” commented Johnny Leach, Motoworks / Can-Am team owner. “There is always more work to be done and the success of the team makes us even hungrier for more wins.”

In the amateur classes, DS 450 racer Collins Webster took the Pro-Am class victory.

POLARIS RZR XP: A Peek Into The Future

0

One of the most important aspects of the new-age Razor XP 900 is the fact it has all the already-mentioned improvements and still weighs in at a very low 1,190 lbs (540 kg),dry.

There’s 13.5-inches of ground clearance up front and 14 in the back and improvements have been made to the brakes until this SxS can brag far more brake surface area than any competitor – even those weighing up to 300 lbs more.

The 900 still comes with Polaris’ rock solid On-Demand AWD system but includes a mean set of aluminum wheels and gnarly ITP XCT tires.

This particular RZR even features the industry’s first LED headlights. The only thing we can think of that Polaris left off the list is electric assisted power steering. Gotta be something to add in the future.

Speaking of the future, we’ve got to think this is the way all RZRs will eventually be headed. This new 900 is so unique and so extreme performance-targeted, we can’t help but think demand will go crazy for the new XP improvements right cross the model line.

Stay tuned for our first ride impressions…

The MX racers will compete on the high-performance YFZ450R while the cross-country teams will continue to race the trail-optimized YFZ450X.

“Yamaha is proud to continue to support the sport of ATV racing and so many great competitors, from the record-holding veterans and returning champs to up-and-coming riders and future champs,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha ATV/SxS group marketing manager. “Racing has always been at Yamaha’s core, and our high-performance machines and stellar race teams are a result of Yamaha’s ongoing commitment to the sport. Bill Ballance, who holds an all-time record nine GNCC championships, leads Yamaha’s cross-country team into the 2011 season with a slightly heavier focus on managing Ballance Racing while also continuing to race the YFZ450X at select events.

Traci Cecco, the winningest women in cross country ATV racing, returns to recapture her crown after a third place overall finish in the 2010 GNCC season. Taylor Kiser, GNCC’s second place overall finisher in 2010 is returning with the single goal of earning his first ever XC-1 pro class championship. Walker Fowler is looking to add a XC-2 championship to his resume in 2011.

In AMA ATV motocross racing, Thomas Brown will represent Yamaha aboard his YFZ450R. Brown, who finished sixth overall in 2010, will be looking to move up within some steep competition.

In addition to Team Yamaha, Brown will receive guidance and support from Bill Ballance as the newest member of Ballance Racing.

Dustin Nelson, the four-time QuadX Series Champion, is returning to the West Coast series for 2011 with hopes of extending his dominating streak. The newly renovated series recently announced a new name, logo and schedule. Nelson, who recently signed Josh Row under the Nelson 94 Racing headline, is also refocusing his own efforts on the WORCS series, in which he placed fourth overall last year.

FIRST LOOK: 2011 ARCTIC CAT 425

0

If power equals fun in your evaluation of an ATV, the new Arctic Cat 425 delivers loads of power and torque from a 433cc EFI single dropped into a lightweight chassis.

Power is delivered to the ground via a rock solid Duramatic CVT with electric selectable 4×4. Yes, engine braking is included and this crisp power package showed us how strong it is when we recently test rode it in Texas.

The ATV can climb hills and slog through muck like few others. The secret is a combo of low weight and ominous torque.

The throttle tip-in with the EFI single is amazing for a quad in this class and its slightly smaller dimensions are a plus not a negative – especially when you’re weaving tight trails.

Suspension is provided by double A-arms front and rear equipped with preload adjustable hydraulic shocks.

The ride is very good and the 425’s handling is even better. We love the dimensions and the nimble feedback the rider gets on this ATV, all without sacrificing the ground clearance necessary to get over obstacles or splash through deep mud holes.

Hey, this ATV even has a set of back-up lights on it so you can see what youÂ’re backing into when plowing snow.

This is a fully equipped winner for Cat and one that delivers a wallop for the price.

We truly love and appreciate getting emails from our loyal viewers and readers. When you mail as many magazines as we do and have web sites that generate the insane level of traffic that ours do or produce the best, most watched TV shows in the industry, you’re bound to get a pile of comments and we welcome it. It shows our informed viewers are passionate and paying attention.

Often, fan letters are written in the same opinionated way we write our articles. They offer constructive criticism or give positive feedback and some simply bash us for an opinion they disagree with. Hey what do we know right?

At any given time we have upwards of a dozen test units on hand from several different manufacturers and endless terrain to conquer. We couldn’t possibly be able to make qualified opinions on these machines, could we?

One criticism that really bugs us though, is being accused of favoring a particular brand. Here’s the thing… as a business, sponsorship revenue is what keeps the doors open – shocker! What sets apart from our competitors though is the fact that we tell it like it is – no matter what.

The OEMs know this too. If they build a great machine, we’ll report it. If they miss the boat, you’ll know about it. If they don’t supply us with test units, you won’t see their products being tested or reported on.

So when you don’t see your brand in the pages of our magazines or featured on our TV shows, let your OEM know about it. If you don’t like what you’ve read about a machine we’ve tested, suck it up. We ain’t lying and that’s a promise.

Jagged X Takes Parker 250 in RANGER RZR S

0

To open the first Best in the Desert race of 2011, the Parker 250, Jagged X chose to run their champion-winning former project X rock crawler to ring in the new race year. The No. 1919 did what it does best, win!

Jagged X had to overcome a poor starting draw of 12th and 15 other side-by-sides to take the checkered flag.

The local rains kept the dust to a minimum and gave Brandon Schueler and co-driver Mike West the ability to pick off competitors one-by-one and finish first.

“We are very pleased to begin the year with a win,” said Bill Schueler of Jagged X. “This season should prove to be a very exciting one and we are excited to debut our new car in April.”

The Jagged X / Polaris Racing team will roll out a whole new race package for the Bilek Racing Silver State ‘300’ in April.
