Carburetor Issues

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

I have a 1990 Yamaha Champ. Previous owner rebuilt the carb and it runs good when hot, but not cold.

I put a new carburetor on and it starts good but seems like the choke doesn’t work correctly (doesn’t rev up and run on choke like other 4 wheelers)

I also won’t idle cold very well have to feather the gas. don’t know carb
settings got any ideas. ps smokes a little, rings or valve guides.

Thanks for your email!

You have exceeded my historical knowledge of ATV’s with your Q. However,I will offer some thoughts.

First, I suspect this engine is using a butterfly choke which are notorious for hard cold starts and poor idle.

Essentially the butterfly blocks all but a slight amount of airflow while allowing the carb mainjet to respond to the increased vacuum of the piston sucking against a brick wall and looking for something to eat.

Essentially, the mainjet “floods” the engine in a crude way and the motor eventually fires. The problem is there is little atomization of the fuel – it just pours into the mill, washes down the cylinder walls and creates smoke.

If you had an enricher circuit style choke the fuel is drawn into the engine in a much more orderly manner and as long as you do not move the throttle flipper, fuel is atomized and sprayed into the intake resulting in a quick firing of the mill. When you shut off the enricher idle drops and when it’s on idle increases.

Without knowing for sure what you’ve got I would say steady as she goes. If it runs warm, you’re at least running – right?

Thanks,

BRP ANNOUNCES PRO ATV MOTOCROSS NATIONAL TEAM

Press Release –

Team Motoworks Partners With Can-Am For 2010 ATV National Motocross Championship Series

BRP is proud to announce the signing of its three-racer lineup for the 2010 ATV National Motocross Championship series. Returning for his third year on the Can-Am DS 450 EFI ATV will be former national champion John Natalie. He will be joined by multiple-time winner Chad Wienen, who is looking to improve on his third-place championship finish last season.

Finally, Jeremie Warnia will race the motocross nationals full-time after racing selected rounds in 2009. All three racers will represent the Can-Am Pro-class effort and contest the series out of the Team Motoworks / Can-Am hauler for the entire season.

“BRP is committed to ATV racing and we look forward to watching these three racers be successful on the DS 450 next season,” says Denis Morin, Vice President Product Development and Racing at BRP. “All three of these racers bring exceptional talent to the motocross track and will be backed by one of the strongest racing teams in the industry; everyone at BRP is excited.”

Natalie moves from the Warnert Racing / Can-Am program to Motoworks and is looking to improve on his results last season where he had two podium finishes. The popular racer who has been nicknamed “Ironman” says this is the season for the DS 450: “First I would like to thank BRP for its passion and commitment to ATV racing. I am big-time impressed by the Motoworks organization so far and cannot wait to start working on a championship. The team wants to win as bad as Chad, Jeremie and I want to win. I am going into 2010 with confidence,” comments Natalie.

Joining Natalie is Wienen, who has consistently been one of the fastest racers on the national circuit. In 2009, Wienen took two overalls and seven podiums last season and was in an exciting championship battle all season long.

Wienen has already had a chance to ride the Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450, and had this to say: “I’ve had some seat time on the ATV and was immediately comfortable on it. And let me tell you, lap times don’t lie: I’m faster. Next season is going to be a great one for me and everyone on the Motoworks team. This is a great opportunity for me,” says Wienen.

Warnia raced selected ATV motocross nationals and ended up with several top-10 finishes as a Team Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 racer. The French-born racer has quickly become one of the more popular racers on the circuit not only for his personality, but also for his blistering lap times on his race ATV.

Currently he sits in first place for the ITP Quadcross ATV championship and third place for the WORCS championship. Warnia says that his experience last year will help make him a contender this season: “Last year was my first racing full time in the United States, so this season I know exactly what to expect and know I will have to train hard this off season. I can’t wait for the season to begin!” says Warnia.

Motoworks team owner Johnny Leach is confident going into next season: “Never has there been a time since we got started that I have had more confidence going into a race season. Last year we learned a lot at the motocross nationals, and this year I expect to win. After initial testing with John, Chad and Jeremie, I am extremely excited with the results,” says Leach.

“I predict next season is going to be a big year for Can-Am ATV racing and this team announcement reaffirms our passion and support for ATV racing,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Racing Manager for Can-Am ATVs at BRP. “Our partnership with Motoworks has worked extremely well for BRP and the development of the DS 450 race program.”

John Natalie and Chad Wienen will make their Team Motoworks / Can-Am debut on the DS 450 EFI ATV at the Montreal Supercross on October 3. They will take on Pro riders from across North America in Montreal’s Olympic Stadium that evening. BRP will announce its GNCC and X-Team amateur support program in the near future. Yoshimura Congratulates Borich on GNCC Title

0

Press Release –

Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki/Yoshimura’s Chris Borich wrapped up the GNCC ATV Championship this weekend at the Yadkin Valley round of the 2009 series.

This GNCC Championship Title was the first for Borich, Suzuki and Yoshimura. It was a dream season for Mr. Borich and his trusty QuadRacer R450 with eight wins and nine podiums.

Although the series Championship has now been decided, there are still two more races up for grabs.

Yoshimura’s Vice President Brant Russell was enthusiastic about the title victory. “Chris has ridden great all year and it is particularly gratifying to see it pay off at the end of the day. On behalf of everyone at Yoshimura, we are honored to have Chris fly the Yoshimura colors.”

Russell also commented on the dominance of Suzuki this season: “It’s been a great year for Suzuki ATV Racing. Dustin Wimmer took his Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki/Yoshimura machine to the Championship in the AMA Pro ATV Motocross Championship Series as well, making it a clean sweep for the dominant QuadRacer R450.

It is obvious what the you need to win in ATV racing these days: a Suzuki QuadRacer R450, a lot of Rockstar to give you that great taste and energy, Makita Tools to help keep everything together, and a Yoshimura pipe to pump out the ponies. It’s easy!”

Borich was smart and consistent all year in capturing the number one plate from perennial winner Bill Ballance. Hopefully Borich will be running this number for a long time to come. “It feels really great winning this title and I hope to be able to repeat!” Chris said after the event. “It seems like everything came together this year and I couldn’t be happier.”

Team Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 Racer Jeremie Warnia Wins Both Pro Classes
Valcourt, Quebec

Team Motoworks / Can-Am pilot Jeremie Warnia made quick work of the field as he raced his Can-Am DS 450 EFI ATV to victories in both the Pro Production and Open Pro classes at the latest round of the ITP Quadcross championship.

The race was held under the lights of the SpeedWorld Motocross Park near Surprise, Arizona last Saturday night. He grabbed both holeshots in the Open Pro class and had a convincing victory in the final of the Pro Production class.

Both wins put Warnia in first place for both the Production Pro- and Open Pro-class championships.

“Jeremie Warnia is a very talented racer and we are sure glad to have him winning on the Motoworks DS 450,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Racing Manager for Can-Am ATVs at BRP. “This makes four Pro-Production wins in seven rounds of racing; what an impressive year he is having out West!”

In other news at round seven of the ITP Quadcross series, Josh Frederick made his first motocross start since an injury earlier this year.

In the Open Pro class, Frederick rode his Motoworks-prepped DS 450 to a second-place overall finish. He was able to recover from a first-moto flat tire in the Pro Production class for 10th overall for the weekend.

Amateur racer, Dillon Zimmerman, finished third overall in the 450 Production Expert class aboard his Team Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450. Zimmerman is in a tight points battle for the class championship.

The next ITP Quadcross race will be October 25th at Cahuilla Creek near Anza, California.

INTRODUCING THE QUADCROSS XC

0

Press Release –

ITP BRINGS WINNING MX TECHNOLOGY TO THE CROSS COUNTRY WORLD

Hot on the heels of the QuadCross MX PRO Lite — a tire that has stunned the ATV motocross ranks since its debut last spring, capturing four AMA ATV Pro National wins — ITP now announces the release of the all-new QuadCross XC, designed specifically for high-performance trail riding and racing.

The QuadCross XC utilizes all of the design features that have made the MX PRO Lite such a winner, but adds the extra strength and larger sizing required for cross country use.

The QuadCross XC incorporates a tough 6-ply carcass for higher puncture resistance and exceptional overall durability. This advanced carcass design has been proven to stiffen the sidewall during side loads without compromising ride quality.

Along with reducing the bounce that’s common on most cross country knobbies, this design benefits acceleration, braking, cornering and overall balance as well, significantly reducing fatigue and lap times.

An aggressive, dimpled tread pattern using a high-tech, long-wearing tread compound further enhances traction, feel and trail handling characteristics. Sizing is 20×11-9 for the rear (P/N 560547) and 22×7-10 in front (P/N 560546).

The QuadCross XC has already shown its winning capabilities under ITP development rider and factory Yamaha team member Dustin Nelson. Fresh out of the tire molds, Nelson rode the first QuadCross XCs to a commanding victory at the mid-August WORCS X event in Straddleline Park, Washington, an extreme off-road race that shaped up to be an outrageous test of man and equipment.

Since 1982, ITP has grown into the world’s #1 ATV/UTV aftermarket tire and wheel source, and continues to provide a complete line of innovative tires and wheels for virtually all ATVs and UTVs.

Which ATV Should I Buy?

0

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

I’m in the market for a new machine, but which is better – big bore or twin? I do a lot of mud and also trails on the Canadian shield, so for ride, the Polaris 850 has me thinking it has everything I need.

Still though the Yami 700 has a few things I like. Honda has the tranny I like and reliability…ARGH! Maybe I should buy ’em all!

Josh

Reply:

Thanks for your email!

You have a pretty good sense for what you want. The Polaris is a stellar ride with great handling and suspension. The XP 850 engine is a rocket with tons of low end grunt.

The Grizzly 700 is a stellar mount as well. Good ride, solid handling, reliable and available with EPS – as is the Polaris and I would highly recommend you look at EPS. Once you’ve ridden with it you won’t go back.

The 680 Honda is underpowered when compared to the others, has no low range so snowplowing becomes a problem. However, it is reliable.

If I were you I would look very closely at your available dealerships. This is going to be the key factor in your purchase. Good service, a good deal and solid support from a dealer can outweigh a lot of cool technical features.

Good luck!

Should I Move From ATV to Side-X-Side?

0

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

I currently have a Rancher ES, but it’s starting to get worn out. It is used on a farm so it has to haul heavy loads, go through deep/thick mud, climb over obstacles, basically a workhorse.

My question is should I stick with an ATV or go to a UTV? Any suggestions on either?

Josh

Reply:

Thanks for your email!

Okay, making the move to a UTV is a giant step up the price ladder and I would say from what you’ve indicated moving from a Rancher to a UTV is going to be a big purchase.

You can replace your Rancher for less than half the cost of a UTV/SXS. If you can cross that bridge then the answer to your question is an absolute – yes!

There’s so much more utility potential in a SXS over an ATV it is almost impossible to make a meaningful comparison.

Hope this helps,

Motorhead Mark
