The Buggy Revolution

0

Seems the popularity of Kasea’s Adventure Buggy, covered in an earlier issue of All-Terrain Vehicle Magazine, is exploding in markets where it’s available.

The previously reported 150cc air cooled model will be joined by a Dazon 175cc liquid cooled rooster that’s an even bigger giggle than the 150.

We’ll have a full report in an upcoming issue but take it from us – there’s something to this buggy thing and we suspect it’s all about getting sideways.

DESIGNED FOR HARD-SURFACE APPLICATIONS

0

Leave it to ITP to create a new tire/wheel kit that opens a whole new area of opportunity for ATV usage. It’s called the All Trail Kit, specifically designed for hard-surface and paved applications.

Anyone who operates an ATV on a construction site, in a warehouse or as a security patrol vehicle (to give just a few examples) will appreciate this convenient, bolt-on kit’s smooth ride, responsive handling and extra-long life.

The All Trail Kit consists of a tough 4-ply Carlisle All Trail Tire (25×8-12 front, 25×10.5-12 rear) pre-mounted on an ITP 12×7 Delta steel wheel with a heavy-duty silver powder coat finish. This combination provides a level of performance and durability on hard surfaces that a standard knobby or mud tire cannot match.

The All Trail Kit is available for most popular utility or 4-wheel-drive ATVs, at a price that cannot be overlooked!

ITP is the world’s #1 ATV aftermarket tire and wheel source, with a complete line of innovative products for virtually all ATVs and applications.

To order, see your local ATV dealer. For a copy of ITP’s full-color product catalog, call toll-free: 1-800-859-4740. For other inquiries or technical advice, contact ITP at 930-A S. Rockefeller Ave., Ontario, CA 91761; (909) 390-1905.

ATV Search & Rescue

0

ATVs have proven to be very useful in search and rescue operations in Ontario. In southern Ontario ATV clubs have been involved in some very high profile missions. North of Highway 7 where the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) provides policing services several of its specialized units routinely use ATVs.

According to Constable Alison Waddington, a Search Master with the Huntsville detachment of the OPP, ATVs allow a searcher to cover more area in less time.

In heavily wooden areas like Muskoka they are only useful if there are trails – walking, snowmobiling, bush roads – on which to ride the ATVs. They are also useful in getting searchers from the command post to the search jump-off point more quickly than by walking. During the autumn/winter and winter/spring transition periods they can be used when poor snow conditions preclude the use of snowmobiles.

The Hills Riders, an ATV club of about 30 members in the Orangeville/Newmarket area has been involved in several search and rescue operations that have been in the news lately.

Club members were part of the searches for Randy Mogridge, the autistic man whose body was found in a creek near Oakville; for Karla Koop, whose body was found in a golf course pond; and for Dylan Zamara, the York University student missing for several weeks.

According to John Penny, vice president of Hills Riders, ATV clubs and the Ontario Federation of All Terrain Vehicle Clubs (OFATV) provide a very valuable service throughout Ontario.

Not all areas are policed by municipal police forces that have their own ATVs for use in search and rescue operations. A call to the Ontario Federation of All Terrain Vehicle Clubs brought over 100 volunteer ATVers with their machines to assist in the search for Randy Mogridge.

MUD LITES NOW AVAILABLE IN DEEP-LUG MODELS

0

ITP’S popular Mud Lite tire is now available in two new 25-inch XL sizes. Previously available only as an AT model (shallow lug) in the 25-inch size, the new deep lug XL model provides significantly more performance when conditions become especially challenging. An excellent choice for OEM tire replacement, this new tire comes in 25×8-12 and 25×10-12 sizes.

The Mud Lite tire is renowned for its all-conditions abilities, as adept at mud running as it is at trail riding. All-around performance and long-distance durability come together in an amazingly light tire—much lighter than its comparable mud tire competition.

Unique center tread contact area provides a smooth ride, while its 6-ply-rated carcass results in a high level of reliability and long life. The Mud Lite’s most attractive feature, however, may be its surprisingly reasonable price!

No Replacement for Displacement!

0

It seems the move to bigger engines in the Sport/Utility class isn’t over. With Kawasaki’s early summer introduction of the Brute Force 750 and the Polaris announcement and unveiling of the Sportsman 800, there’s another rumor shaking of an even bigger displacement ATV being readied for 2006.

We’ve heard stories of an OEM, currently not producing a Big Bore Sport-Ute, working feverishly on a – get this – 1000cc V-twin 4X4 monster!

This manufacturer already builds a V-twin with similar displacement for another consumer recreational motorized vehicle. So, we’ve gotta ask, when will it finally be big enough?

Better Safe than Sorry!

We’re heading into winter riding conditions and, as has been our annual policy, we’re going to encourage you to check your differential lubricant for water before you do damage to expensive seals, bearings and gears.

If you’re like us, you run mud and water in the spring, summer and fall. After repeated dunkings there’s little doubt you’ll have ingested some moisture in your ATV’s front and rear differentials.

Small amounts of water can be adequately absorbed by good quality diff lubricants. However, there is a limit as to how much water you can mix with these lubes before water contamination sets in and the lubricant starts to break down.

Don’t take any chances! Simply inspect the lube (some newer ATVs now have dip sticks on the differential); if it looks milky, bubbly or watery thin, dump it and put in fresh.

400EX Face Lift

We were pleasantly surprised to hear about the improvements Honda has made to their venerable 400 EX, now called the TRX400EX.

Some in the industry suspected Honda might eliminate the EX as we know it and replace it with a liquid cooled version.

While a small bore liquid cooled Pure Sport ATV is still possible from Honda, we are pleased to see the air cooled 400 EX return with reverse gear.

At its sales peak before the arrival of a plethora of Pure Sports competition, the 400 EX was rumored to be selling as many as 25,000 units annually.

US Customer Survey Ranks Dueler A/T Revo As #1

(Press Release) — The Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo featuring UNI-T AQII™ technology is currently rated by consumers as the best Off-Road All-Terrain tire in the light truck/SUV category in The Tire Rack’s online customer tire survey (www.tirerack.com), a U.S. based high performance products distributor.

The Dueler A/T Revo received the highest rating in eight of nine individual tire performance categories in the survey, including dry traction, wet traction, snow traction, hydro resistance, cornering stability, steering response, ride comfort and noise comfort. And when asked separately which tire they would purchase again, respondents gave the highest rating to the Dueler A/T Revo.

With 18 other tires competing in the Off-Road All-Terrain category, the Dueler A/T Revo is the only tire to score a “superior” rating in all 10 rating categories. The complete results of the survey can be viewed at: www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/surveydisplay.jsp?type=ORAT.

The Tire Rack maintains the independent online customer survey to help drivers assist each other by sharing their real life tire experiences. More than 76,000 surveys and 1.3 billion driver miles have been reported since 1997.

Winter Gas Tip

0

Another winter tip we live by around our offices is the mandatory use of isopropyl alcohol fuel de-icer in all of our rides during the winter months.

This “trick” is no trick at all and will ensure your wheeler starts and runs in cold temperatures. There are no ATVs in service in winter climates that do not accumulate some water in the fuel system. Water will eventually become ice in freezing temperatures and will limit or completely obstruct fuel flow.

If you see black smoke on cold starts it’s an indication of water in your fuel. Don’t take any chances – use only isopropyl alcohol based gas line anti-freeze, not methyl hydrate (it will say so on the label) in your fuel throughout the winter.
