Bring on the Rocks!

Can-Am pilot, Chad Hughes, passed more than 60 other vehicles on his way to a finishing the 2019 Can-Am UTV King of the Hammers race. While his 21st place finish may not sound spectacular on paper, you must remember finishing the race in the allotted 9-hour time limit is often viewed a significant accomplishment. Finishing the challenging course, while passing roughly half the field along the way, is statement maker, especially when you add to that his Can-Am Maverick Sport X rc 1000R was nearly stock in a field full of high-horsepower, turbocharged side-by-side vehicles with long travel suspensions. While he didn’t win the race, he did showcase to the spectators, fellow racers, course officials and even the winch-assist vehicle operator, that his Maverick Sport rock crawler is the real deal.

“I was of course very proud to be representing Can-Am in an all-new machine targeted specifically for rock crawling,” stated Hughes, who started racing side-by-side vehicles in 2011. “The car did not disappoint, it absolutely rules the rocks. As expected, it gives up quite a bit of ground to the Maverick X3 vehicles in the desert, but we started 84th and eventually passed 63 cars to end up 21st as we crossed the finish line in 7:33. That was well under the nine hours allotted finish time.”

Hughes, 54, resides in St. George, Utah, where he works at Moto Zoo Powersports and also runs his own adventure and fabrication shop called Offroad 365, the latter of which is a name fitting of his lifestyle. Hughes, who also is the local high school’s mountain bike racing team coach, said he was disappointed when he learned a technical, rock-wall climb, he felt confident in scaling with the Maverick Sport X rc, was removed from qualifying. And the new qualifying run setup was more of a short-course, desert loop that favored all-out speed. Despite the challenging starting spot, Hughes knew he would have to shine in the rocks to gain ground, while also holding his own in the desert sections.

“As soon as we hit the first [rock] canyon, we started passing cars like crazy…eight cars here, six cars there, and it went on and on,” said Hughes, who’s off-road resume includes motocross and mountain biking, among other activities. “And we managed to hit 78mph on the lake beds running 33-inch tires.”

Hughes said the Maverick Sport X rc 1000R side-by-side vehicle had zero mechanical issues during the race and only took some minimal damage to the bottom skid plate and perhaps a small scratch to the side. “Don’t blame me or the X rc, blame the rocks,” he said.

One of the most impressive capability statements about the Maverick Sport X rc for Hughes was that he didn’t require the use of his onboard winch the entire KOH race. “The only time we used our winch was when my co-pilot Tracon Kirk got out of the Can-Am to help move a stuck competitor out of the way who was blocking the trail,” he explained. “True story, just ask the guys running the JEEP winch on Outer Limits who watched us and later said to us ‘Damn, that things works pretty good’.”

Making it ULTRA4 and KOH-ready
After the race, Hughes shared with us that his Can-Am was nearly 90 percent stock and that he just fabricated and installed a few accessories and those mandated by Ultra4 Racing. His modifications list is not a lengthy one like you’d read on many of the other vehicles competing in the Can-Am UTV King of the Hammer racing event. Hughes, who has a history with customization having built one-off rock buggies and JEEPs, swapped the stock Maverick X rc ROPS for a 6-point DOM safety cage with a nearly 2-inch diameter, added the necessary harness system, safety nets, fire extinguishers, flashing race light and, of course, the mandatory properly placed race numbers. To customize the Can-Am Maverick Sport X rc to his liking for the KOH rocks, Hughes went with an STI tire-and-wheel kit. The 3-in. larger tires and offset wheels added a little more ride height, clearance and width.

“The car passed tech with flying colors,” he stated. “Our only re-work was to make the roof numbers larger. Everything else was stock.  We ran a stock drivetrain, stock suspension, stock brakes, stock steering, stock A-arms and all! It’s almost unbelievable really, but I’m super impressed with the little car and, to me, it’s mission accomplished for Can-Am.”

POLARIS RZR® FACTORY RACING WINS KING OF THE HAMMERS FOR 11th CONSECUTIVE YEAR WITH PODIUM SWEEP

0

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (February 5, 2019) – For the 11th consecutive year, a Polaris RZR® took the top spot on the King of The Hammers podium. Polaris RZR Factory driver Mitch Guthrie Jr. secured his back-to-back win in Johnson Valley, Calif. in the all-new RZR XP® Turbo S Velocity.

Guthrie Jr. fought through rain and heavy winds to qualify first. In the main, Guthrie Jr. showcased the terrain-dominating features of the new RZR XP Turbo S Velocity and exercised true talent to outpace the competition in the world’s toughest one-day off-road race.

“We blew a belt and lost the lead. It was totally my fault,” said Guthrie Jr. With a quick belt change, he and co-driver John Crowley, Jr. were able to re-gain the lead again going up Clawhammer. “The RZR XP Turbo S Velocity was flawless.”

Utility Task Vehicles (UTV) were first introduced to King of The Hammers in 2009, and the top spot of the podium at Hammertown has been inhabited by a Polaris RZR every year since.

Polaris RZR Factory drivers Wayland Campbell and Brandon Sims finished second and third, respectively, and completed the all-RZR podium. With a finish time of 5:19:09, Campbell edged out Sims by one minute, three seconds.

“A huge sigh of relief when I pulled into Hammertown,” said Sims. “I just kept thinking ‘Keep it together.’ The RZR was great all day and is a testament to its strength. It was a rough race.”

With another first-place win at the King of The Hammers, Polaris RZR Factory Racing now has three wins and 10 podiums in the 2019 calendar race series. Polaris RZR Factory Racing looks to continue its early 2019 success at WORCS in Lake Havasu, Arizona.

POLARIS® RZR ADDS NEW BEAST TO THE PACK WITH INTRODUCTION OF RZR XP® TURBO S VELOCITY

0

MINNEAPOLIS (January 29, 2019) – Polaris RZR®, the world’s #1 selling sports performance side-by-side lineup, introduced two new machines today with the 72-inch RZR XP® Turbo S Velocity and 72-inch RZR XP® 4 Turbo S Velocity. At $25,399 and $28,399, respectively, the new two- and four-seat Velocity models deliver an unmatched combination of performance and value amongst the 72-inch side-by-side segment.

Like the performance-leading 72-inch RZR XP® Turbo S and 72-inch RZR XP® 4 Turbo S, the new Velocity models are built with stronger axles, high-clearance control arms, a three-times stronger drive system, a reinforced chassis and a more robust drivetrain with improved cooling; these machines are designed to dominate any terrain. Additionally, the Velocity models maintain the same features of the RZR XP Turbo S that make it a beast – 168 horsepower, a 72-inch stance, 32-inch ITP Coyotes, 16 inches of ground clearance, and four-point harnesses.

Each new model will feature race-ready 3.0-inch aluminum Walker Evans Velocity Shocks with high- and low-speed compression adjustment. Drivers will experience a plush ride through the small chop and increased stability through high-speed whoops. And, to create the best value within the 72-inch vehicle landscape, each Velocity model received a simplified fit and finish when compared with the premium offerings.

“We designed the Velocity models in response to drivers seeking the ultimate combination of performance and value,” said Kyle Duea, Vice President of ORV Marketing for Polaris Industries. “Along with this new offering, we’re excited to add an additional paint scheme to the current XP Turbo S and XP 4 Turbo S lineup for a wider range of styles and designs.”

As is standard in all category-leading RZR models, Polaris pushed the limits of engineering when designing the Velocity models. The result – high-performance vehicles capable of taking on the most demanding terrains at a higher value price point.

The RZR XP Turbo S Velocity models also feature 25 percent more assist in power steering and a better feel at high speeds. Additionally, each Velocity model keeps the driver focused on effortlessly maneuvering through the terrain, without forcing on the wheel. Recalibrated throttle mapping gives the driver more immediate and improved control, while the redesigned clutch box allows for better air flow and decreased belt temperatures.

The new XP Turbo S Velocity and XP 4 Turbo S Velocity will be available in Titanium Metallic. The RZR XP Turbo S and XP 4 Turbo S in this new paint scheme, as well as both Velocity models, will begin shipping to Polaris dealers late January. XP Turbo S Velocity and XP 4 Turbo S Velocity will be available in Canadian dealers at $30,999 and $34,499, respectively.

Yamaha Announces 2019 SxS / ATV Racers and bLU cRU Support Program

0

MARIETTA, Ga. – January 29, 2019 – Yamaha Motor Corp., USA, announces their returning factory-supported Side-by-Side (SxS) and ATV racers for the 2019 season, including reigning YXZ1000R and YFZ450R champions, along with over $100,000 in SxS and ATV bLU cRU racing championship bonuses for 2019. Registered racers competing in select series with their pure sport YXZ1000R SxS or podium-topping YFZ450R sport ATV models will be eligible for payout.

Yamaha’s latest bLU cRU program offers racing bonuses ranging from $15,000 to winning a YXZ1000R for eligible racers competing in select classes with Yamaha’s 2018 or newer YXZ1000R, YXZ1000R SS (Sport Shift) or YFZ450R models. Racers can register online at www.YamahabLUcRU.com to sign up and apply for bLU cRU benefits. Once approved, racers will receive a reloadable Yamaha bLU cRU debit card and $45 credit on their www.bLUcRUswag.com account for bLU cRU apparel. These racers will be eligible to receive championship bonuses paid directly to their bLU cRU debit card.

Starting the 2019 race season, Yamaha is offering $10,000 in potential bonuses at the grueling King of the Hammers (KOH) race on February 3. The top-finishing YXZ1000R in the UTV class will earn $5,000, plus an additional $5,000 with an overall win. The ULTRA4 Racing Series’ KOH is infamous for its punishing desert course through some of the roughest and most challenging rock and boulder sections of any timed event.

Yamaha will also join the world-debut Chasing the Triple by SXS Sports, a new series featuring ice, short course, and cross-country SxS racing, as the presenting sponsor of the Pro Stock class, with the YXZ1000R as the official pace vehicle for the year. In addition, if a bLU cRU racer competes in an eligible YXZ1000R at all four rounds and clinches the Pro Stock class, they will win a YXZ1000R. And even fans will have the opportunity to win by entering a drawing to ride copilot in a YXZ on the track with the Greaves.

“Yamaha is excited to welcome the 2019 race season alongside our new and returning ATV and Side-by-Side bLU cRU racers,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s motorsports marketing manager. “Whether you’re an amateur or multi-time defending champion, we all share a passion for racing, and we’re excited to see the bLU cRU program expand, in addition to our podium-proven vehicles competing across the multiple series and an even wider variety of environments this year.”

Representing Yamaha in the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series (LOORRS) Production 1000 UTV class is the undefeated, two-time titleholder Brock Heger. Winning both LOORRS Production 1000 UTV championships since the class was introduced in 2017, Heger is looking to secure his third-straight as he continues to defend his title in his BH Motorsports / Yamaha / Weller Racing / Maxxis YXZ1000R. And for his first time ever, Heger will attempt to conquer this year’s KOH and select Best in the Desert rounds, vying for their bLU cRU bonuses in his YXZ1000R.

Returning for the second year of the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Midwest Championship’s Pro Stock SxS class is decorated veteran and third-year Yamaha factory-supported racer, CJ Greaves in his Monster Energy / Maxxis / Yamalube / GYTR / Greaves Motorsports YXZ1000R. At only 23-years-old, Greaves is already an off-road racing legend, with an impressive resume including numerous short course SxS, Pro 2, and Pro 4 truck championships.

Heading up the ATV MX effort for Yamaha is the second all-time winning, six-time American Motorcycle Association (AMA) Pro ATV MX champion, Chad Wienen, on his Wienen Motorsports / SSI / Walsh / GYTR YFZ450R. In 2016, Wienen became the second racer in ATV MX history, and the only racer in 25 years to win five-straight AMA Pro ATV MX titles. Following a nail-biting victory in 2018, Wienen continues to make history as he chases his seventh ATV MX Championship. Wienen will also be representing Yamaha in the AMA’s all-new Production Stock Premier class.

Leading the GNCC circuit is long-time Yamaha factory-supported racing veteran, Walker Fowler, defending his fourth-straight GNCC XC1 Pro ATV championship on his WFR / GBC / Fly Racing YFZ450R. Fowler brings more than a decade of success to the team, placing first or second in every ATV series he’s contended in, starting with his GNCC debut in 2006.

Even in 2019, many UTVs still don’t come with roofs as standard equipment. Even if they do, some roofs are not made to last with plastic connections and poor fitment. MotoRoof’s lineup of Razorshade mesh roof products fix these common issues with an easy to install, cost effective, and durable shade solution.

Razorshade mesh roofs are made from extremely durable vinyl coated mesh polyester that ensures a UTV’s roof will be a great source for shade and protection from the elements. With the extremely durable mesh design, the Razorshade provides a 92%

shade factor for UV resistance on the sunniest of days. This means more sun protection, comfort, and time on the trail for everyone. Plus, no aluminum roof means less radiant heat coming from above the cab, keeping occupants cooler and more comfortable all day long.

The Razorshade is custom fit for a variety of the most popular UTV makes and models. Installation of the product is extremely easy with no tools or modifications to the vehicle required – just line up the Razorshade and install it with the supplied bungie attachment system. Because of the perfect-fit design of each Razorshade product, no flapping or inconsistencies will occur.

In addition to Razorshade mesh roofs in the MotoRoof lineup of products, the company also features Wind Jammer mesh side and rear panels for the most popular UTV models. Wind jammer products are made of the same durable polyester material and are designed to provide additional shade and protection from the side or rear areas of the UTV.

As if all of these great features weren’t enough, every MotoRoof product can be custom printed with items like a company’s logo or slogan. Now you can brand your own MotoRoof product for additional company exposure out on the trail, in a clean and non in-your-face way.

BRPS CAN-AM MAVERICK X3 SIDE-BY-SIDE VEHICLE WINS THE DAKAR RALLY AGAIN

0

Lima, Peru, January 17, 2019 – BRP’s (TSX:DOO, NASDAQ: DOOO) Maverick X3 side-by-side (SxS) vehicle has won the 41st edition of the Dakar Rally in South America for the second year in a row.

A popular choice for many racing teams, the Maverick X3 vehicle was dominant on the circuit, as nearly 80% of the vehicles racing in the SxS category were Maverick X3, proving Can-Am’s leadership in this category. Can-Am had more than 20 teams entered in the 2019 Dakar Rally, which lasted 11 days and featured a 5,000-kilometer course (around 3,100 miles) that started and ended in Lima, Peru.

“We congratulate the winners. This amazing victory and the fact that many racing teams decided to choose a Maverick X3 to conquer the world’s toughest and biggest rally shows how BRP and Can-Am’s unrelenting focus on innovation produces best-in-class products,” said Olivier Camus, Global Marketing Director, Can-Am Off-road. “For us, racing is an exciting testing ground to create the best possible experience for our consumers.”

Since its introduction in August 2016, the Can-Am Maverick X3 vehicle has chalked up a lot of victories on the racing circuit, winning four major championships in North America as well as several races elsewhere in the world, such as the 2018 Dakar Rally.

“To have the Can-Am Maverick X3 vehicle win the side-by-side class twice in a row in Dakar, the world’s most difficult race, is outstanding,” concluded Camus. “It’s a clear demonstration that we have an industry-leading platform that will allow consumers and racers alike conquer the most challenging terrain imaginable. Congratulations to all the riders and thanks for choosing the Can-Am Maverick X3.”

POLARIS RZR® FACTORY RACING TEAM SETS NEW RECORD FOR MOST WINS

The team’s 50 wins exceeded the dominate 43-win performance the team generated in the 2016 and 2017 seasons combined. “It’s been a fantastic year of racing with incredible results,” said Kyle Duea, Vice President of ORV Marketing at Polaris Industries. “The tremendous amount of dedication that went into training and preparation by the racers and their teams was incredible.
