2018 KAWASAKI MULE PRO-FXR

0

We may have been skeptical the first time we got a ride in Kawasaki’s Mule PRO-FX but it didn’t take more than two minutes behind the wheel to be converted.

The FX offered a new level of smoothness in this type of workhorse SxS and it’s due in no small part to its 3-cylinder Chery engine, its linear electric power steering and silken CVT operation.

From the outset we realized in many ways we actually prefer the new Mule to the Teryx. True, the Teryx is a different kind of Sport-Ute vehicle targeted at those seeking fun as a priority and putting hauling prowess second on the list. But this latest Mule is really good at both!

Although it may not be completely fair to put those two head-to-head, at the end of the day, our staff riders were pretty wowed with the PRO-FX.

When we heard about a sportier version of the FX called the PRO-FXR arriving, it immediately piqued our interest.

In this case, “sportier” may be a relative term. Yes, the basic design and appearance of the FX is still very evident with the new FXR, but Kawasaki’s engineers have taken some giant steps to make the FXR lighter, more agile and to get markedly better handling.

For starters, they chopped a full 12-inches out of the overall length of the FX. At 121.5 inches tip to tail, the FXR pivots more easily in the woods and loses 95-lbs of weight in the process compared to the similarly equipped Pro-FX Ranch Edition.

Although 95 lbs may not amount to much more than a couple of full knapsacks, the fact the weight’s been erased low in the chassis makes a huge difference in the way the FXR feels from the driver’s seat.

Interestingly, the wheelbase has been reduced a fraction more than the overall length. This brings the wheelbase to 79.7 inches compared to the FX’s 92.3.

You’d think the cab area must have been squished a lot to accommodate the new shorter dimensions – not so. The FX’s extra length was condensed by changing the position of the cargo bed on the chassis, actually moving it forward so it abuts the rear of the passenger cage, keeping the bed fairly close in length to what the full sized FX uses. Rear overhang has been reduced and the overall look is very balanced.

Kawasaki has taken pains to upgrade the appearance of the FXR so it appeals to a different demographic than the longer FX. A roof is included, sporty aluminum wheels added and grippier, more aggressive meats are part of the package.

Inside there’s a premium electronic gauge package, tilt steering wheel and nicely contoured seating for the driver and right-side passenger. Oh – and one feature we love: There’s still three-up seating in the front with plenty of legroom for everybody.

Speaking of love, to quote Mr. Darcy, we love, love, love the full doors on both the FX and FXR and we’re so glad Kawasaki didn’t chintz on including these premium latched and hinged doors on the FXR just to save a few pounds weight.

Our test riders couldn’t have been more impressed with the 812cc DOHC triple under the cargo bed and loved it’s predictable power delivery.

The comment was: “This thing is like a little pick-up truck!” It’s true, too. If you licensed the FXR and put it on the street – maybe added a windshield and some of Kawasaki’s cab enclosure options, you could drive the FXR on the street comfortably every day – maybe even take the kids to soccer practice in it.

Handling is much quicker with the reduced wheelbase and length and, overall, there’s just a more sporty feel to the FXR. Although the shock package hasn’t been notably upgraded, the ride from independent A-arms at all corners is very good.

From an ergonomic and utility perspective there’s very little compromise: The tilting cargo bed and its tailgate work smoothly and are very good quality, the cab is roomy and comfortable and sight lines out the front are excellent.

We have to give kudos to Kawasaki for the job it’s done on the FXR. We didn’t believe it would be this good. We were wrong.

CAN-AM DEFENDER – ACCESSORIZED FOR HUNTING!

0

Can-Am’s Defender has unsettled the competition the last year or so – no doubt a goal Can-Am wanted to reach but actually may not have been completely convinced could be achieved.

Riding this vehicle even a short distance, you’re impressed with its innovative engineering and magnetic smoothness of operation.

Steps have been taken to ensure this drivetrain produces the absolute minimum vibration from its engine and that silken response spools from its CVT transmission.

Seating comfort is a priority and its ride and handling stand tall among the best of the best in the utility segment.

We recently received a 50-hp, 800cc Defender 3-seater press unit and wanted to see what Can-Am offered for outdoor recreationists who use a vehicle like this specifically for hunting.

Anyone using a SxS for this knows there are certain attributes in a vehicle that can make your trip out to the stand or fishing hole easier and then make the ride home a pleasure.

Considering the Defender was built to accommodate at least two people on its bench-style seat and that there’s a roomy, tilting cargo bed at the rear, you’d think that was all you’d need to satisfy the outdoor segment.

Not so. We selected some key add-ons from Can-Am’s accessory catalog and then threw in one major aftermarket feature we feel turns the Defender into a hardcore hunting conveyance.

GUN STOWAGE

Anyone knows you can’t just leave unsecured rifles clattering around in the bed of a SxS. Furthermore, most hunters want to bring more than one gun per person on a hunt. What do you do with all that artillery?

1. Can-Am offers a cool in-cab Dual Gun Holder that mounts on the floor between the driver and passenger. Since it stores the rifle vertically, you can unsecure it from its top clamps in an instant and then just pull the gun stock out of the base when you see a target.

2. Kolpin also makes a beautiful Gun Boot 6.0 Impact for the Defender that mounts firmly to the rear of the vehicle up high behind the rear window. This boot uses a hinged hard plastic shell to keep the gun dry and free from harm as you’re traveling over rough terrain.

3. A third alternative would be Kolpin’s LinQ Mounted Gear Grips that attach to the side rails of the bed using Can-Am’s unique LinQ fastening system and strong, ratcheting clamps to secure your weapon.

This set-up offers quick, easy release and very secure mounting both to the vehicle and to the rifle. Fishermen can also utilize this adjustable clamping system to secure poles, nets and other bulky gear.

All of these gun storage systems can be found in the Can-Am catalog and are available from your dealer.

HEADACHE RACK

Stowing tall equipment in the bed of a SxS can be a pain, literally, when it slides around or can’t be mounted securely back there. There’s nothing worse than coming to a sudden stop or riding over unexpected holes and dislodging everything in the bed and sending it flying into the cab.

This rack, securely mounted at the front of the bed, covers the whole rear window area and provides infinite mounting points to tie or bungee down what you’re carrying in the rear.

It’s strong and made of steel with durable mesh so you can still see through it for backing up. The above-mentioned Gun Boot uses a custom Kolpin Auto Latch-Mount attached to the Headache Rack to secure up to two gun boots.

WINDSHIELD & BIMINI ROOF WITH SUN VISOR

If you’ve ever been attacked by branches when you’re trying to maneuver through tight spaces in the woods then you know how nice it is to have a roof over your head and front protection from leaves and other stuff.

We’re not even mentioning the obvious relief from the pouring rain you’ll get. Can-Am’s Bimini Roof is made of durable poly and wraps around the upper roll cage with Can-Am’s own mounting system. Roof available in camo or black. Polycarbonate windshields available in half, flip-up or full-sizes.

WARN 4500-LB PROVANTAGE WINCH

Don’t think you’ll need a winch? You only have to get mired once and make the 5-mile walk back to camp before you know how precious a good winch can be. 4500-lbs of pulling power pretty much guarantees you can save yourself the walk. Available with nylon or steel winch lines.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT SIDE-X-SIDE

0

It seems like we’re always meeting people who ask us which SxS they should buy. The truth is, this is a question we can’t possibly answer.

Here’s why: For starters, we don’t live where they live; we don’t ride the same terrain they do; we don’t ride exactly how they ride and we don’t ride with the people they ride with. So what fits perfectly for some may not work for someone else.

It would be nice to think there’s one SxS that can do everything for everyone. However, if you think about it, the beauty of this industry is the diversity of the products available. These days, there’s something built to fit everyone’s needs and part of the fun is the search to find the right one specifically for you.

When the above question comes up, our standard response is to learn more about you and what you plan to do with the vehicle. Then, given those parameters, we try to recommend a suitable model. Unfortunately, there’s one major buying factor even this in-depth investigation can’t account for.

No matter what model our experience tells us would be the best choice for you, if it doesn’t rev you up in some indefinable, pleasurable way, you likely won’t be happy with it.

Off-roading is about passion and excitement. Whether you’re a hunter headed into the camp or a sport rider in the dunes you’re there because you love off-roading in the outdoors. If the vehicle you’re driving doesn’t get you excited, the whole experience will be as cold as the bottom shelf of your refrigerator.

The amount of information available on each and every model in the SxS market is staggering. From editorials and test rides by the professionals at Dirt Trax magazine and Dirt Trax TV, to unqualified user reviews and opinions on YouTube, you can see and hear about all your potential buying options from every possible angle.

Good, bad or ugly, it’s all out there for the world to see, and this info, no matter the quality of the content, is right at your fingertips. It’s truly up to you to seek it out, separate the quality content from the garbage, and then process it so you can make a decision.

I guess what we’re saying is you should do basic research before asking for help. We love to help, however we love to help even more when we know you’ve tried on your own first.

Getting bogged down in the info-cesspool is a real possibility given the amount of information, good and bad, that’s out there. TMI (Too Much Information Syndrome) occurs when you’ve spent too much time researching and not enough time deciding.

When the line between informed, unbiased information and bare conjecture, based on little or no experience gets blurred, it can seem like there are no good choices.

As with all mental disorders, talking about it can help. We love talking to readers and viewers suffering from TMI Syndrome. The cure for TMIS is to trust those who’ve earned it and ditch those opinions-givers who haven’t earned respect in the industry.

For nearly 20 years DirtTrax has been producing unbiased, no-bull tests and reviews of nearly every ATV and SxS on the market. We don’t have to spend our own money on these vehicles so loving one brand versus another has nothing to do with what we have invested. If we love it, it’s because it’s loveable. If we hate it, it’s because it just plain sucks.

None of us have any reservations about telling it like it is because when the dust settles, our reputation is where our credibility comes from.

So, honestly, check in with us on the pages of this website and watch us on television and YouTube so we can weigh in on your decision and help you sort through all the info you’ve gathered so you can make the best buying decision possible.

2018 POLARIS GENERAL 4

0

If you’ve checked out the General 4 online, you’ve no doubt scanned its price, too. If you haven’t, better hold onto your hat. This is a pricey vehicle.

Obviously, Polaris has pulled out all the stops to offer a high performing SxS with its maximum powerplant (although not turbocharged) and the very best electronic, mechanical and comfort features out there.

However, price is king and, at this tag, the General 4 may be reserved for the most elite of buyers. Not elite in that they demand everything available – more so, elite in that not many people can afford to shell out this kind of money.

Thus, the market for the General 4 may be restricted somewhat and a broad segment of potential buyers will never get to experience the goodness of this 4-seater. That is, unless they have a rich friend who owns one.

For those who do buy one, they will be getting a beautiful SxS, thoughtfully designed and meticulously executed. Our testing of single-row Generals has proven them to be utility vehicles that come within an inch of being pure performance rides.

You can read elsewhere on these pages about our own General project that, with a few mods, some major, some minor, turned the Gen into a full-fledged high performance vehicle with very little compromise.

We found Polaris’ choice of power an interesting study. Going with the maximum displacement DOHC twin Polaris offers, it automatically puts the General into a specified slot.

This is a fast, strong performing vehicle that even when loaded with four humans and a bed-full of gear, can run trails and hills without coughing.

This engine pumps out 100-hp and has suspension to match. There’s 12.25 inches travel up front and 13.2 at the rear. Better yet, Polaris is using Fox Podium QS3 3-position adjustable gas shocks at all corners. These shocks are incredible in that you can make huge differences in the way the General rides with three easy clicks of the compression adjusters.

Think about this: You and a passenger are heading to the hunt camp with your gear and the trail is rough. On the way you’re picking up two more passengers plus their gear and you want to make up some time.

The extra weight could slow you down but all you have to do is get out and turn the shock adjusters up one notch and ride is restored. Each notch makes a significant difference in the Gen’s ride quality and it’s super-easy to ensure all adjusters are tuned the same.

Fact is, the shock package on the Gen-4 turns out to be reasonable justification for its price. Off the shelf from the aftermarket these shocks would easily be in the $2,000.00 range for a set of four.

It’s pretty obvious the designers knew one thing prospective buyers’ harp about is rear seat legroom. From the outset it was priority-one to make sure it was comfortable back there, thus the General 4 sits on a 113-inch wheelbase allowing plenty of space in the backseat and leftover room so none of the front seat comfort is compromised, either. Likewise, the cargo bed remains roomy. It’s over 43 inches long, fully tilts and has a beefy tailgate.

Inside the cab, there’s excellent digital instrumentation, four buckets with front adjustability for the driver – and a tilt wheel. There’s even LED floor lights.

Polaris has also been really careful to include plenty of secure storage in the cab – and the best part – excellent hinged doors that provide coverage nearly right up to the passengers’ shoulders.

We could talk about the 4,500-lb winch (yes, you read that correctly), power steering and the nice, blacked-out aluminum wheels or the Black Pearl paint job, but the big story here is that the General 4 1000 is the premium deal in every category of comparison – and because of that, it will cost you.

It rests on an ultra-efficient, lightweight chassis and delivers superb performance through optimized handling. Ample braking and a strategic design also enhance the driving experience.

• The Can-Am Maverick X3 X mr Turbo R side-by-side vehicle features an industry leading 24-in. (61 cm) of suspension travel. The amazing four-link TTX suspension features a trophy truck-like trailing arm and three links that control wheel toe for optimal geometry during extra high wheel travel. On the X mr Turbo R vehicle, the lower links are arched for even more clearance while navigating through irregular terrain. Components are perfectly matched for an unparalleled power transfer to the wheels and high traction with virtually no bump steer. The suspension system also offers precision control, traction and more confidence at both low speed crawls and trail runs at higher speeds.

• The 120hp Maverick X3 X mr Turbo vehicle has a very comfortable and capable 20-in. (50.8 cm) of front and rear suspension travel, which is better than any competitive vehicle in the market, to enrich the overall off-road experience.

– Front A-arm suspension

The Can-Am Maverick X3 X mr Turbo R has a trophy-truck inspired front architecture with an arched double tubular A-arm and sway bar. The setup significantly increases ground clearance (total of up to 15-in.) and approach angle capacity, while also delivering a whopping 22-in. (55.9 cm) of travel. The Maverick X3 X mr Turbo package is no slouch either, supplying 20-in. (50.8 cm) of travel, which comes in handy when traversing muddy and rutted terrain.

Both Maverick X3 X mr vehicles feature the premium FOX 2.5 Podium HPG Piggyback shocks with front and rear QS3 (Quick Switch) compression adjustment and rear bottom-out control for a quick and easy set up.

ULTRA-EFFICIENT, LIGHTWEIGHT CHASSIS

– Ultra-light and rigid chassis

The Can-Am Maverick X3 X mr family features an ultra-light, rigid chassis made of cutting-edge Dual-Phase 980 steel, which is lighter than traditional steel. This allows the chassis to deliver 53 percent better torsional stiffness while being 20 percent lighter than its closest competitor.

– Industry-leading cage rigidity

The Can-Am Maverick X3 vehicle’s robust cage is also made of Dual-Phase 980 steel, which is extremely light and rigid. It is a 1.85-in. (4.7 cm) tubular, fully welded design – no bolts, no extra pieces – with dedicated servicing zones in case of repair or replacement. The cage is fully ROHVA compliant and creates a protective barrier around both driver and passenger.

– Enhanced protection

SHARPEST HANDLING FEATURES

– Smart-Lok – Full lockable on-the-fly front differential with electronically controlled automatic modes for mud A new industry standard, the electronically controlled front lockable differential system with Smart-Lok technology ensures maximum traction and enhanced slow-speed maneuverability especially in challenging terrain. The Smart-Lok system, developed in conjunction with TEAM Industries, takes integrated intelligence to new heights and allows on-the-fly adjustments. The differential can lock and unlock on the fly no matter the speed, letting the driver focus on the trail.

Smart-Lok offers intelligent modes for different riding conditions. The brain controlling this industry leading technology is the Front Differential Module, gathering input from six key vehicle parameters. It analyzes front wheel speed from both sides, steering angle, accelerator pedal, gear position, engine torque and vehicle speed. Depending on the readings and the Smart-Lok setting, the actuator will instantaneously initiate the locking of the front differential. The result is simple steering output (same as being fully open), allowing the driver to accurately conquer varying obstacles while maintaining momentum.

The driver has the option to select between four modes: 2×4 / 4×4 fully locked / 4×4 MUD and 4×4 TRAIL. The preset MUD and TRAIL settings were strategically calibrated to supply a more customized feel to match to specific terrain, conditions and demands. Our engineering team further refined the system by including hill descent control, which includes an Electronic Braking System (EBS) at all four wheels, for improved control and traction.

– Optimal stability

The 102-in. (259.1 cm) wheelbase, which is a full 12-in. (30.5 cm) longer than the closest competitor, improves off-road capability by supplying more comfort and a confidence-inspiring ride at both high speeds and technical crawls. The elongated wheelbase, optimal weight distribution (44/56) and ample ground clearance [14-in. (35.6 cm) X3 X mr Turbo; 15-in. (38.1 cm) on the X3 X mr Turbo R] create optimum performance and stability in even the most appalling muck. The 8-in. (20.4 cm) broader stance on the 72-in. (182.9 cm) wide Maverick X3 X mr Turbo R also provides unmatched stability, when combined with its superior suspension, longer chassis and Smart-Lok technology system.

– Superior grip and control

The Can-Am Maverick X3 X mr Turbo R side-by-side vehicle wears 14-in. (35.6 cm) aluminum black beadlock wheels. The mechanical fastening beadlock system makes it nearly impossible for the tire bead to break loose from the wheel during heavy acceleration, cornering or when navigating a rock-strewn course. New, eight-ply 30-in. (76.2 cm) ITP Cryptid tires are purpose built to perform in muddy terrain. The tread pattern is designed to deliver unparalleled forward traction with a graduated lug height (up to 2 in. / 5.1 cm) inches at the tire’s shoulder. The resulting “paddle-like” shoulder design provides maximum side bite for climbing in and out of
the mud without compromising ride comfort on trails and hard pack. The grooved center lugs also channel away mud and create unmatched predictability in ruts.
