2014 YFZ450R: Y the YFZ 450 Keeps Winning!

0

Would tinkering with a formula that is clearly working and opening a window of opportunity for competing OEMs who once had credible success in the Sport market not be a big mistake?

It’s no surprise that in 2014, Yamaha stuck to its guns by minimizing changes to the industry sales-leading Raptor 700R and one of the industry’s highest performing, most technologically advanced Sport ATVs, the YFZ450R.

When the 2014 YFZ450R was first introduced back in June, DirtTrax reported upgrades such as all-new engine settings and more power from its high-tech, quick-revving, titanium 5-valve, 449cc EFI engine. Then there was the news of the lightweight, cast aluminum and steel hybrid chassis.

Add to that, new KYB shocks with 9.8 inches of travel and Kashima coating up front compliment a new rear swingarm with 11 inches of travel and a new, fully adjustable 46mm KYB piggyback damper out back.

The new YFZ also features Maxxis tires and quick release fasteners allowing no-tool installation and removal of the front and rear fenders.

After spending plenty of aggressive saddle time riding this rocket on the track, on trails and in the dunes at Glamis, California, we’re confident telling you this quad remains, by far, the best sport ATV to ever come out of a Yamaha factory.

We also stand by our decision to name the Yamaha YFZ450R Best In Class in the Sport ATV category. Actually, it was a no-brainer – it’s that good.

MBRP Power Tech 4 ATV Replacement Exhaust

MBRP has long been known for making power and last year we showcased the development of a RZR 900 Exhaust that netted an extra 5 ponies. While there’s no doubt the side-x-side market is on the rise, ATVs still dominate the landscape on the trails.

As much as some riders don’t like to admit it, exhaust systems are wearable items. Carbon build up, worn out packing and excessive ingestion of mud choke off the exhaust flow and rob the power from your ATV.

MBRP makes a full line of OEM replacement exhaust for chambered mufflers and offer Glasspacked versions as a performance upgrade.

All mufflers are designed to OEM specs for fitment but come with the added benefits of heat-resistant black coating, reduced weight of up to 50% along with increased exhaust flow up to 70% for better throttle response and improved low end torque.

As with all MBRP products, exhausts are tuned to deliver the sweetest sound without being offensively loud.

2015: A BIG YEAR FOR THE 50-INCH WIDE SxS

0

This has been a crazy week for new iron! Polaris pulled the sheets off its 2015 fleet with probably the biggest new model intro of the year.

The astute observer will notice the disappearance of a few legendary powerplants and their welcome replacements have us pondering the reaction from competitive OEMs.

You’ll notice Polaris chose to pretty much shelve its 800 twin in 2015. This engine has resided in the wildly popular 50-inch wide RZR amongst other vehicles in the fleet.

We think this might in part be a reaction to Arctic Cat’s Wildcat Trail, which although only a 700, claimed to top Polaris’ mill with 60-plus horsepower. Along with a few other sweet features like upgraded Fox shocks, half doors, a Team Rapid Response Clutch and a lower price tag, we speculated earlier that Polaris would really have to up its game to stay competitive and that appears to be exactly what the companyÂ’s done.

For 2015 Polaris has added some cool updates to its base RZR like beautifully crafted half-doors, a slightly longer wheelbase for bridging big bumps, upgraded seats and for its biggest shocker, Polaris engineers tucked the popular ProStar 900 into the 50-inch wide RZR, delivering a significant increase in power to 75 ponies!

Although there’s a slight price hike from $11,499 for the base 2014 RZR to $12,799 in 2015 thereÂ’s a huge leap in value for what you’re paying for and a lot more jam when you press the accelerator too.

We have to wonder for one, what the response will be from Arctic Cat in the next evolution of the Wildcat. Furthermore, when and if Can-Am steps into the 50-inch wide SxS arena, how will the Quebec-based manufacturer choose to compete against such a worthy adversary?

Stay tuned, it’s gonna get crazy!

CAN-AM PRO JOEL HETRICK EARNS MX PODIUM AT RED BUD

Can-Am DS 450 racers recorded numerous podiums competing in both the AMA-sanctioned Mtn. Dew ATV Motocross National Championship series in Michigan and round six of the New England ATV Motocross series in Massachusetts. Joel Hetrick earned third place in the Pro class at the Red Bud MX National, while fellow Pro Travis Moore earned second in the NEATV-MX series Pro ranks.

“We had a decent weekend in both the ATV MX National series and the New England series, earning Pro and Pro-Am podiums,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “Joel Hetrick’s third-place finish at Red Bud gave him the nice points advantage in the race for second place, which will ultimately be decided at the series finale. DS 450 racers Jeffrey Rastrelli and Ronnie Higgerson will be battling for the Pro-Am class title at the finale as well, so our season is definitely ending with some intrigue.”

Red Bud ATV MX National

Three Can-Am DS 450 Pros finished in the top seven at the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Red Bud ATV National in Buchanan, Mich. Joel Hetrick (JB Racing / DWT / Mtn. Dew Live Wire / Can-Am) was the top finisher, earning third overall with a 2-6 scorecard. The podium finish was HetrickÂ’s fifth of the season, pushing his points total to 306 and giving him an 11-point cushion over third place.

“The Can-Am was working awesome and my Elka shocks were great on the rough Red Bud track,” said Hetrick. “I want to go to Loretta’s and be strong there; hopefully take another win. I’m second in points now going into the last round and if all goes well, I will finish second in points, which would be the best Pro finish of my career. I’m pretty happy about that.”

Coming off his first career Pro class podium finish at round seven, JB Racing / Cheerwine / Can-Am DS 450 pilot Jeffrey Rastrelli overcame a first-moto crash to earn a very respectable sixth-place finish at Red Bud.

He also earned second overall in the Pro-Am class with a 4-1 moto score on Sunday. More importantly, the podium finish pushed him into the class points lead over fellow DS 450 pilot Ronnie Higgerson, who finished seventh at Red Bud while racing in a cast. The championship will come down to the final round at Loretta LynnÂ’s in two weeks, as just four points separate Rastrelli and Higgerson.

“It wasn’t the best weekend for me, but being how rough the track was, we came out pretty good. I had an awesome start in the first Pro moto and then I hit a kicker and then went over a berm and flipped. I got back on quick and got up to sixth before the end,” said Rastrelli. “In Pro-Am I have the points lead now, so I want to ride smart and stay out front so I can bring home a championship.”

BCS Performance / Can-Am racer Josh Creamer recorded a seventh-place finish in the Pro class at Red Bud and is currently sixth in the class standings. Canadian Can-Am X-Team racer Mathieu Deroy made the trip to Red Bud and put together an impressive 2-1 scorecard to win the Open A class. William Lloyd (JB Racing / Cheerwine / Can-Am) joined him on the class podium, taking third on his DS 450.

Capeway Rovers NEATV-MX

At a rocky, sandy and rough Capeway Rovers MX in Carver, Mass., BCS Performance / Whitcher Racing / Can-Am X-Team rider Travis Moore continued his pursuit of a repeat championship by taking second in the NEATV-MX Pro class. He took second in both motos to earn 50 points and remain on top of the class standings heading into round seven. Moore also competed in the Pro-Am class and finished fourth – overcoming crashes in each both motos – to maintain his points lead.

“My Whitcher Racing Can-Am DS450 was handling awesome today and soaking up the gnarly track and rocks and we never had a mechanical issue even despite my crash,” said Moore. “My points leads have been maintained heading into the next round at Twister Valley, which is my biggest rival’s hometown track, but I’m confident in myself and my team and we will be training very hard this coming week.”

2015 POLARIS SPORTSMAN ETX

New to the Value Line for 2015 is the Sportsman ETX, the first Sportsman with EFI retailing under $6,000 U.S.

The Sportsman ETX also sports the Sportsman 570 chassis but with a smaller and lower profile for improved ease of mount and dismount, and improved ergonomics for additional comfort when riding.

At the heart of the Sportsman ETX is a 30 horsepower, Electronic Fuel Injected (EFI) ProStar engine featuring an internal counter-balance shaft for smooth, vibration-free power.

The dual overhead camshafts and a 4-valve cylinder head work with the advanced engine management system to precisely deliver the fuel charge for impressive power and instant, predictable throttle response; while the lightweight efficient transmission captures every ounce of power to deliver it to the ground.

The unit also features integrated winch and plow mounts, making it easier to add these accessories when needed.

The Sportsman ETX will be available in Sage Green and Blue Fire and will be part of the Sportsman Value Line that also features the Sportsman 570 and 570 EPS offered in Sage Green, Indy Red and Polaris Pursuit Camo, with EPS models available in Bright White, Sage Green and Polaris Pursuit Camo.

2015 POLARIS RZR 900, 900 TRAIL and 900 XC

Polaris RZR is the No. 1 brand of sport side-by-sides, outselling its nearest competitor by leaps and bounds. That’s because RZR relentlessly innovates, offering the very best lineup for every type of off-road sport riding.

Owning a RZR has become more than enjoying the dunes, desert or trail, it is a community of owners who share the RZR lifestyle due to their passion for not only off-roading but the ultimate experiences RZR provides. Model year 2015 brings the launch of RZR’s biggest line-up ever with all-new products and significant innovations to every single segment, for every type of riding to continue to fuel the RZR lifestyle.

For trail riders, RZR goes back to its roots and redefines the first two RZR products ever introduced with the new 2015 RZR 900 and RZR S 900. These vehicles feature unequalled power, highly-capable suspensions, unmatched agility and revolutionary ergonomics and styling.

At the heart of the RZR 900 and RZR S 900 is a 75 horsepower ProStar 900 engine offering improved power-to-weight ratio and faster acceleration. The new ProStar power plants offer more than 40 percent more horsepower and15 percent more torque than the previous RZR 800 models.

Polaris’ ProStar engines have become the pinnacle of performance engines for RZR due to their efficiency, acceleration and durability. For more power to the ground, the vehicles also feature the extremely durable RZR XP transmission which is specifically geared to optimize the power of the engine.

For trails that are width-restricted to 50 in/127 cm, the RZR 900 features a highly-capable, Dual A-Arm Rear Front and Rear Suspension with 11 in/27.94 cm of ground clearance*, and 10 in/25.4 cm front and rear travel to overtake any obstacles thrown in its way. The 26 in/66 cm PXT tires are Polaris-proven and provide all the traction needed even for the toughest trail.

The vehicles are more razor sharp through the corners thanks to the optimized track width. Optimization comes from maximizing the track width while maintaining the overall width.

For all other trails, the RZR S 900 has an unrivaled suspension featuring a Dual A-Arm Front and Rear Suspension with 12.25 in/31.11 cm front, 13.2 in/33.5 cm rear suspension travel and 12.5 in/31.75 cm of ground clearance. Outfitted with new, eight-ply, 27 in/68.58 cm GBC Dirt Commander Tires that offer better side bite, stiffer sidewalls, better tracking through corners and increased durability, the RZR S 900 wonÂ’t let anything stand in its way.

For unmatched agility, Polaris utilized a few features found on the RZR XP 1000 to ensure the RZR 900 and RZR S 900 perform at their finest whether they are dodging trees on the trail or navigating through gnarly switchbacks.

While all RZR vehicles are equipped with On-Demand True All Wheel Drive (AWD), Polaris utilizes its High-Performance AWD on the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and 900 Trail models to keep the front wheels pulling stronger and longer maximizing power delivery to the ground in every condition for a more responsive ride. Both units also feature a narrow turning radius to navigate curvy trails and a 20 percent faster steering response. With an improved two-turn, lock-to-lock steering ratio, itÂ’s easy to keep your hands on the steering wheel while navigating around any obstacle or hairpin turn encountered on the trail.

The units’ ultra-rigid, tubular chassis also provides substantial improvements in stiffness and durability, and complement the all new suspensions. The trail- capable 50 in/127 cm width and 79 in/200.7 cm wheelbase is the perfect combination to ensure the RZR 900 is responsive and agile on the trail, and the standard Engine Braking System (EBS), EPS and Turf mode available on the RZR 900 Trail Editions provide the most agile, controlled ride whether traversing mountain sides or running down your favorite forest trail.

The RZR S 900’s 60 in/152.4 cm width and 79 in/200.7 cm wheelbase provides an incredibly stable footprint for riding in wide-open spaces while the EPS-equipped units make sure the vehicle takes the brunt of what that space has to offer.

For 2014, the RZR XP 1000 was launched with revolutionary ergonomics and styling and for 2015, the new RZR 900 and RZR S 900 also feature many of the same, unique features.

The newly-designed seats offer improved bolstering and 100 percent more hip cushioning for a more secure feel, and feature a new thin-film technology under the cover for a drier ride in wet conditions.

The driver-side seat slider on the Limited Edition models allow for tool-less, on-the-ready seat adjustment along with additional leg room, and space-optimized dead pedals for both the driver and passenger make for a more secure ride. The driver also will appreciate a new, stiffer steering wheel designed for comfort and a more responsive feel.

The vehicles also feature factory-installed quarter doors for extra protection from debris, and easier ingress and egress. For improved adjustability, the units feature the innovative, flow-through tongue seat belt design that is easier to adjust and retract. The sealed belt retractor housing ensures the belts will endure through the nastiest conditions. To stay on the trail longer, the vehicles sport a larger 9.5 gal/36 L fuel tank.

Inside the cockpit, the units feature LED floor lighting and a slick blue back-lighted instrument cluster, readable both in direct sunlight and at night. To take more stuff along, a large center storage area and a bigger glove box with new latch provide ample space for any items needed during the ride while the deeper rear box provides ample space for additional cargo.

Sealed floor seams and equipment pass-throughs keep the occupants cleaner; while dual removable floor drains allow for easier clean out of the cabin.

The RZR 900 and RZR S 900 are even easier to service due to the ease of access of the major components. The air filter, spark plugs and oil fill are now located under the removable box panel in the cargo box of the vehicle while a panel between the seats houses the dipstick and oil filter, and is accessible without removing the seats.

The vehicles feature an integrated transmission with only one check/fill point and grease zerks for both the inboard and outboard bushings of the A-arms. To add electric accessories easier, the vehicles feature a terminal block for wiring under the hood and a bigger battery with 44 Amp-hours of capacity and 575 cold-cranking amps.

RZR enthusiasts love to accessorize their vehicles and the RZR 900 and RZR S 900 feature integrated accessory mounting locations, hidden wire routing areas within the cab frame and more than 130 accessories for more customization.

The purpose-built vehicle chassis is exclusively engineered for Polaris accessories. With integrated mounting points situated along the vehicle frame and pass-through areas for routing wires, accessories can be attached with minimal installation time.

Additions, such as rock sliders and bumpers, easily attach and fit securely to the vehicle’s frame due to Polaris’ innovative Lock & Ride Expanding Anchor; a revolutionary piece of hardware that expands as it is inserted into a mounting point. Lock & Ride windshields, rear panels, roofs and doors work seamlessly with each other and install directly onto designated mounting points, making installation simple, and providing superior fit and finish.

The RZR 900 will be offered in White Lightning and Polaris Pursuit Camo. The RZR 900 Trail Edition featuring EPS, EBS and Turf Mode will be available in Black Pearl and Sunset Red. The 55 in/139.7 cm RZR 900 XC Edition with EPS, EBS, Turf Mode, 27 in/68.58 GBC Dirt Commanders on 14 in/35.56 cm Vader Rims, wide fender flares, FOX Performance Series – 2.0 Podium X shocks, 12.5 in/31.75 cm of ground clearance, LED Headlights, Interactive Digital Display and bowed doors will feature Stealth Black. The RZR S 900 will be offered in White Lightning with the EPS models including Havasu Red Pearl, Black Pearl and Titanium Matte Metallic.
