Mark continues his series of reviews on the latest UTVs with the well-rounded 2019 Can-Am Defender XT-P.
KENNESAW, Ga. – November 20, 2018 – The Yamaha XTReme Terrain Challenge (XTR Challenge) presented by Yamalube took over Loretta Lynn Ranch this past weekend as Yamaha YXZ1000R and Wolverine SxS fans, family and friends converged for a weekend of outdoor adventures and festivities in celebration of Yamahas all- new off-roading event.
The XTR Challenge put YXZ1000R and Wolverine SxS drivers and their co-pilots up against a demanding Side-by- Side course of natural and manmade obstacles with many choosing to use Yamahas new Adventure Pro GPS navigation tool while navigating the rugged, technical trails. Participants and spectators enjoyed the action-packed adventure throughout the weekend with hosted food, family activities and a concert headlined by country music star, Josh Gracin.
YXZ and Wolverine owners from around the country demonstrated their Proven Off-Road capabilities through the nearly 14-mile course of rugged natural terrain with varying elements including tight woods, hill climbs and descents, creek crossings, dry creek beds, washouts, rocks, mud and more. Spectators had a front-row seat as the participants also tackled five manmade obstacles:
– YX(2E)Z Pass: Navigating a log course in a ravine at the bottom of a hill climb and decent.
– YamaHoller: Multiple mud holes, tire obstacles, and strategically placed culverts.
– Wolverine Ravine: Rock face followed by angled logs.
– Winch Way: Creekside stretch of deep, thick mud spanning 200 yards.
– Granite Garden: Two large rocks piles requiring precise line selection and skill.
“Our inaugural XTR Challenge was a great success as Yamaha enthusiasts from all over joined us to put both themselves and their SxS vehicle to the test in some pretty extreme off-road conditions,” said Steve Nessl, Yamahas motorsports group marketing manager. “Wolverine and YXZ owners alike proved themselves to be as Proven Off-Road as their machines, with many battling through adverse conditions to finish the course, and did so with a smile on their face. Plans for next years XTReme Terrain Challenge are already in the works, with dates to be announced in early 2019. All participants at the inaugural XTR Challenge are guaranteed a spot in next years event should they choose to return for another chance to tackle the course.

Nov. 11th marked 100 years since “Armistice Day” (later deemed Veterans Day) was established in this great nation. To celebrate and honor our military veterans this Veterans Day, future NFL Hall of Famer Joe Thomas teamed up with Polaris Ranger to kick-off RANGER CountryHeroes Hunt – a fundraiser for veterans.
Thomas recently joined a group of disabled veterans, participating in a hunt at LEEK Hunting and Mountain Preserve – a non-profit organization that uses hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation as a means of recovery for wounded heroes.
With the help of the RANGER Country Heroes Hunt campaign, the award-winning facility is raising awareness and money for the expansion of Dunham Hall, which provides lodging and conference rooms for wounded warriors and their families. Polaris donated the first $25,000 to the effort, along with three RANGER vehicles, one of which is retrofitted with hand paddles to assist disabled veterans and allow them to participate in activities on the property regardless of their current physical status.
RANGER Country Heroes Hunt has kicked-off today and will run through Nov. 30th to raise awareness for our countrys heroes. Additionally, anyone who donates to the non-profit will be entered for a chance to win a 2019 RANGER XP 1000.

AJ tries to control his excitement as he walks around Can-Am’s wild new 100 horsepower addition to its mudding lineup giving his first impressions of this mud bogging version of the Maverick Sport. Could the Maverick Sport X mr be the best side x side UTV 2018 has shown us?
If you want to know how much the sport has changed, ask its champions—or three of them. Sharing the top of the leaderboard with unprecedented success in wins and championships since 2011, Cody and Hunter Miller and Kyle Chaney helped to make the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) one of the most competitive side-by-side series ever. Regrets? Only one.
“My only regret is that we didnt start racing it sooner—I wish Id started 10 years ago,” Hunter Miller says. Despite the lower speeds early on, their Can-Am race cars had an edge on the competition.
“The first time we got into side-by-sides, my brother and I got X package Commanders, we just thought, ‘Wow, this is the next craziest thing… Wed never been in anything like it,” Cody Miller says. “Right out of the bag, Hunter and I went out there and got first and second.”
Since then, the series has evolved into a much more competitive one: they all say a new Maverick X3 has pretty much just its tires in common with what they would have raced at the beginning.
“The Maverick X3 is just tough, you can run them as hard as you can drive them,” Chaney says.
As the GNCC series wraps up its final year in 2018 with Hunter Miller crowned champion and Kyle Chaney runner-up, theyre looking forward to racing throughout the U.S. for Can-Am in 2019.
We head south to Louisiana to the High Lifter Proving Grounds to test out the 2019 lineup of Polaris High Lifter vehicles including the RANGER XP 1000, Sportsman XP 1000 and RZR XP 1000. We also sit down with Marketing Manager of Polaris Off-Road Vehicles – Josh Hermes – to get some insight on the Polaris – High Lifter partnership.
