Professional action sports legend and stunt performer Travis Pastrana will take his mad skills to the starting line when he races the Polaris RZR Star Car at the longest off-road race in the U.S., Best in the Deserts (BITD) “Vegas to Reno” race on Aug. 18.
Pastrana, a 13-time X-Games medalist, will push a 2017 Polaris RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS to its limits, maximizing the ultimate combination of power, suspension and agility as he looks to add to his long list of motorsports accomplishments.

We get asked all the time what Side-x-Side is best for taking the entire family out for a ride.
Can-Ams Defender Max DPS has been in our stable for an entire season and it is becoming increasingly tougher to deny it might be the best 6-seater utility UTV on the market.
With its ample and unique storage features, smooth ride and ridiculously powerful V-twin, we were impressed with the 3-passenger version at its introduction a few seasons ago, but stretch that out to comfortably seat six and youve got yourself a serious contender in the 6-seater class.
The Max DPS features a robust and powerful 72-horsepower Rotax V-twin with enough jam to climb steep inclines with ease even when its fully loaded with bodies and cargo.
With all six seatbelts clicked, itll reach over 62-miles-per-hour on a straightaway before the governor taps in.
Realistically, we like to think about useable power and this Defender will tackle trails and inclines better than most in this category.
The long wheelbase Defender Maxs DPS electric power steering is arguably the best in the industry for predictable, smooth response.
This system is different than BRPs Tri-Mode power steering used on most off-road Can-Ams and with a single mode, has found the sweet spot between medium and high input. Even weighted down with bodies, theres almost no resistance in the steering while tackling the gnarliest terrain and absolutely zero steering wheel whip has been detected. Zero.
Theres another element to the Defender we love and its coined in one word: Smoothness. The combination of an extremely vibration-free engine, velvety CVT engagement and smooth power steering system feeds tremendous feedback into the drivers cranium. Sometimes you feel that any ride just isnt long enough and you want to go back for more.
The cargo area is excellent and storage is abundant. Although the bed isnt particularly striking or unique, it does have good tie-down areas and notches for 5-gallon pails. The tailgate works extremely well.
Our biggest gripe on the Max is the same we had with the 3-passenger Defender. The out-of-the crate settings on the aluminum body coilovers is too soft.
On smoother surfaces the Max rides great, but loaded down with all six seats occupied, you begin to notice its shortcomings. Ground clearance is impacted as the vehicle sags and impacts from big rocks and stumps can be felt grinding underneath by everyone in the cab.
We think this vehicle would be the perfect candidate for a set of Fox QS3 3-position adjustable shocks – even if they were optional.
Youd get quick adjustments between soft, medium and stiff settings as the vehicle filled up with passengers or emptied out.
Were not sure if Can-Am has this in its sites for future models and, if not, wed simply recommend a bit more adjustability for its shock choice.
As far as comfort, power and durability, wed still give Can-Ams Defender Max DPS top honors in the six-passenger category.

KENNESAW, Ga. – July 25, 2017 – Yamaha Motor Corp., USA, provided $8,500 to four chapters of the National Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (NACT) organization to promote safe, responsible use of ATV and Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicles in agricultural settings.
As part of the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative (OAI), Yamaha granted $3,500 to Oklahoma State University, $2,000 to Utah State, $2,000 to the University of Florida, and $1,000 to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Yamaha transitioned its longstanding support of the NACT organization from an independent scholarship program to the OAI this year to allow for expanded funding, and increasing the number of chapters receiving financial support.
“Yamahas goal for this program – the reason we work with Ag students year after year – is to provide them with important information relating to the safe, responsible use of ATV and Side-by-Side vehicles they can carry with them throughout their professional communications careers,” said Steve Nessl, Yamahas ATV & SxS group marketing manager. “Many of the ACT chapters have really embraced the program from inception, which allows us to expand and reach even more students year after year.”
The granted funds go toward helping students attend the annual Ag Media Summit (AMS), the largest gathering of agricultural media professionals in the country, and a primary career networking and professional development opportunity for ACT members. Over the past nine years, Yamaha has invested nearly $50,000 into the program.
“The ACT members participating in this program have been given the chance by Yamaha to further develop skills they are learning in the classroom through a real world project that they can be proud of,” said Emily Buck, Ph.D., NACT national faculty advisor. “We continue to be excited about this collaboration and opportunity for our future agricultural communicators.”
To apply for the Yamaha-ACT grants, chapters are required to develop educational communication campaigns and materials focusing on safe, responsible use of ATV and SxS vehicles on farming and ranching operations. The Yamaha OAI review committee then evaluates each application based on need and merit of submission materials, and this year, all four chapters that applied were approved for funding.
ACT is a national college student association with more than 420 members located on more than 20 college and university campuses across the country. Members often attend the annual AMS meeting for significant professional opportunities with members of AMS-sponsoring organizations American Ag Editors Association, Livestock Publications Council and the American Business Media Agri-Council.
