ARGO LX SERIES XTV

0

We’ve long admired the “go anywhere, do anything versatility” of the Argo XTV (extreme terrain vehicle).

Amphibious in nature and adventuresome in spirit, the Argo brand has successfully transcended a half-century, employing evolutionary changes as it continues to meet the high demands of hunters, resource prospectors and first responders.

As Argo begins its next 50 years, plan is to make extreme mobility accessible to more of us who like to venture into the rough country. With this in mind, the company has introduced its new LX Series focused on being faster, more comfortable and more terrain compliant, all to attract what the company refers to as the most discerning of XTV enthusiasts.

The most noticeable traits setting the LX models apart from the traditional Argo are its stylish design, interior creature comforts and striking color configurations such as Sunset Magic, Crimson Shadow, Silver Shadow, Cranberry Wine and Royal Nautica.

Standard LX trim packages include ergonomic seating with upgraded front and rear cushions and adjustable backrests, handrails and dual side entry steps for easier entry. There’s also marine-grade Jensen 4-channel, 40-watt speakers and a Bluetooth streaming audio system.

Additional standard features include a front-mounted Warn 3,500-lb winch, interior lighting, a carbon fiber dashboard, lower skid plates and a dash-operated bilge pump.

All Argo XTVs are powered by Kohler V-twins with EFI. The 8×8 LX’s 748cc liquid cooled Kohler delivers 30-hp whereas the air-cooled 6×6 churns out a respectable 23 ponies. Both use belt driven CVT transmissions.

The new, advanced LX drivetrain produces top speeds 25-percent faster than previous Argos, topping out at 25-mph in high range for the 8 x 8 and 22-mph for the 6 x 6.

Both configurations feature Argo’s new Admiral triple differential steering transmission that proportionally adjusts steering input based on vehicle speed. We found the new transmission significantly reduces jerkiness and uneven power application while steering and provides a new level of smoothness while turning at higher speeds.

While we’re still anxiously waiting to see an actual suspension system incorporated into an Argo chassis, there is the new soft-ride system on 8 x 8 models. This is comprised of ultra-low pressure 25-inch tires mounted on bead-lock aluminum rims.

This wheel and tire configuration allows tire pressures as low as 1.5 to 2.0 psi and does a good job at improving ride comfort and terrain compliance – a definite bonus that allows you to maintain better control while driving at speed over rough surfaces.

One of the Argo’s most impressive attributes is its ability to traverse seemingly impassable terrain. With 9.5 inches of ground clearance, its ultra low center of gravity along with its HMW polyethylene body and full-length skid plate, it glides over uneven and rocky terrain providing sure-footed stability when climbing steep and uneven slopes or clawing its way through deep mud and thick marshlands.

The beginning of any Argo adventure typically starts when you come to the end of the trail. As Mark Lester has noted in his test ride of the Outfitter 8×8 on Dirt Trax Television, the Argo takes to water like a duck-tolling retriever. The same is true for the LX series; although when we tested it, we opted to appeal to its sporty personna and entered the water more like a dog at a dock jumping competition.

With its exclusive chevron paddle tires, the Argo propels itself in the water at 3-mph. Steering the Argo in water is no different than on land. You power the paddle tires by twisting the hand throttle and adjusting the rate of power delivery to either side by turning the handle bars in the direction you want to go.

The 8×8 allows you to carry up to four people or 900-lbs in the water. We found the two passengers in the rear counterbalanced the weight of the powerplant up front, keeping the Argo level in the water. When piloting waterways solo we discovered shifting our body weight aided in turning. The onboard bilge pump makes quick work of displacing any water that might creep onboard.

There’s no doubt the Argo is the most versatile off-road vehicle ever produced. Time and again we’re amazed at what it can do and more importantly, where it can go. With the LX 6×6 priced at $18,995 US ($19,145 CAD) and the 8 x 8 at $27,295 ($27,945 CAD), there’s no doubt the Argo is a serious investment. However, any Argo owner you ever speak to will tell you it’s also a sound investment both in satisfaction delivered and from the high resale price any used Argo demands.

We’re excited about the future of Argo and its sister company Ontario Drive & Gear. Its recently appointed CEO, Enoch Stiff, has breathed new life and excitement into the company. In turn, this attracted Arctic Cat’s former Snowmobile Division Vice President and dealer network wizard, Brad Darling, to the role of company President.

If history tells us anything about the future, things are looking bright for Argo.

Yamaha Named as Sponsor for 2017 TORC Series

KENNESAW, Ga. – May 10, 2017 – Yamaha Motor Corp., USA, is The Off-Road Championship (TORC) series’ Checkered Flag sponsor for all UTV classes for the 2017 season. Along with the Checkered Flag sponsorship, Yamaha Viking Side-by-Sides (SxS) will serve as track maintenance and support vehicles while the pure sport YXZ1000R SxS will be the official pace car for all Pro UTV classes.

The TORC series kicks off its first two rounds this weekend May 13 and 14 in Chicago, marking the second year the TORC series is featuring SxS racing. Yamaha Factory-Supported racer Corry Weller secured last year’s championship in the inaugural Pro Stock UTV series piloting her Dragonfire Racing Yamaha YXZ1000R. Weller was the only racer in the series to podium in all races she competed in, as well as the first-ever woman to win a TORC series championship in any class.

“The Pro Stock UTV class represents some of the best and most competitive short course racing in the country, making it a great fit for the championship-winning YXZ1000R to continue Yamaha’s racing legacy,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s ATV and SxS group marketing manager. “The YXZ’s pure-sport performance, direct connection and durability consistently placed it on top of the podium in TORC’s newest class last year, and everyone at Yamaha is excited to see YXZs continue winning races and championships in the highly competitive and growing Side-by-Side field.”

In 2017, Yamaha Factory-Supported racer and decorated TORC series champion CJ Greaves will compete for the Pro Stock UTV title driving his Monster Energy / Maxxis / Greaves Motorsports Yamaha YXZ1000R. Despite being only 21-years-old, Greaves is an established TORC series veteran with two Super Buggy titles, three Pro 2 titles and two Pro 4 titles. Last year, Greaves decided to take on the series’ Pro Stock UTV class in his YXZ1000R and ended up winning the season finale at Crandon International Raceway.

Yamaha Racing and Yamalube (along with Method Wheels and Greaves Motorsports) are also supporting #955 Jake Lunderby in the Pro Stock UTV class. Both Greaves and Lunderby will be using Yamalube products. Yamalube is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Yamaha’s Trackside Support program will provide technical assistance and replacement parts at all TORC series events via the Powersports 1 Team from Appleton, WI, led by #845 Rod Vanepren who will also be participating in the Pro Mod UTV class in his YXZ1000R.

Yamaha’s bLU cRU program is expected to pull a large contingent of drivers this year and is offering a championship bonus of $15,000 to eligible racers competing in this year’s TORC series Pro Stock UTV class in a Yamaha YXZ1000R or YXZ1000R Sport Shift (SS). Racers can register online and learn more about the program at www.YamahabLUcRU.com.

Every Yamaha SxS and full-size ATV is proudly assembled at Yamaha’s state-of-the-art U.S. factory in Newnan, Georgia, for worldwide distribution. View additional details on the YXZ1000R and YXZ1000R SS models, along with the full lineup of Proven Off-Road vehicles at www.YamahaMotorsports.com.

STAMPEDE 900 4X4

0

As you may have already learned, the Bad Boy brand will now fall under the new badging of Textron Off Road alongside the recent acquisition of Arctic Cat’s offroad lineup.

Textron Off Road showcases some interesting technical pull with models offering gas-power, electric-power and a hybrid side-x-side called the Ambush.

The company’s Stampede 900 is a gas powered big-inch UTV with no electric driveline features. It uses a dry sump, 846cc, 80-hp liquid-cooled EFI parallel twin connected to a CVT. Generating 59-ft-lbs of torque, this engine represents substantial power and opens the door for much more than just utility use.

The Stampede uses selectable 4-wheel drive and has locking front and rear diffs. Suspension duties are handled by double A-arms at all four corners and front and rear sway bars. There’s 11.25-inches of ground clearance and EPS is available but optional.

Inside, there’s a 3-person bench seat, a tilt steering wheel and full doors reaching up high, protecting the driver and passengers’ shoulders.

One unique feature is the Stampede’s digital dash screen. This big 5.25 x 3.25, center-mounted display toggles up all the info you’ll need and is a classy upgrade users will love and undoubtedly compare to the competition.

To cover work duties, the Stampede’s bed offers 24 cubic feet of cargo space, an extended cab with extra storage behind the driver, 2000-lbs of towing and 600-lbs in the box.

The Fast-N-Latch cargo securing system with 70 special work-specific attachments for hauling cargo keeps everything securely fastened down, which is a nice feature and one we’re impressed to see so fully developed.

Standing back and admiring the Stampede, we’ve got to admit this is a fully evolved vehicle that has plenty of sizzle and good looks. Build quality is excellent and its styling is both modern and very appealing.

Textron Off Road appears to be determined to make its mark in the offroad industry with significant resources under the company’s wide reaching umbrella including the recently acquired Arctic Cat brand and its assets. We fully expect to see the Stampede line develop further as Textron aims to be recognized as a market leader.

Look forward to a full test ride of the Stampede 900 this season on Dirt Trax Television.
