YAMAHA YXZ1000R SS: The Game Changer

0

Testing off-road vehicles is never something we regret doing. No guff, right? We know it and we’re the first to admit we are very fortunate to be able to do this for a living.

Sometimes though, you leave a destination and a riding experience so unbelievable, so exhilarating, you can’t stop thinking about it. This is one of those times.

Being the only guy in the Dirt Trax crew to not get saddle time on the YXZ1000R SS has been bothering me for too long. When the chance came up to test one in the majestic backdrop near St. George, Utah… I quickly claimed this adventure for myself.

The red rock and sandy terrain accented with mountains and an oasis-like lake was surreal but what I really came there for was to put the YXZ1000R SS paddle shifting beast through its paces.

As usual, Yamaha encouraged us to push its machine to the limits so once we were set free to let er rip, I put the SS on course for some down-right abuse. The YXZ loves to rev, in fact it takes some getting used to because it performs best when you let it scream before hitting the next gear. The lesson learned here was to think one gear lower than what felt “normal”. Once I accepted the fact the YXZ was actually at its best when worked this way, my confidence as a driver quickly became something I’d never experienced before.

Driving confidence was multiplied tenfold for two main reasons. First, the paddle shifting experience is hands-down the greatest thing I’ve encountered on an off-road vehicle. I’m not exaggerating. I found myself shifting more often and gearing down to increase RPM to get mega-grunt in corners and power shifting where I would have normally just been happy to maintain touring speed. What results though, when you have such ease of shifting, is truly remarkable and enlightening.

I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the other key and unique feature which inspires unparalleled rider confidence, the suspension on the YXZ1000R. The specially designed FOX Podium X2 shocks on this machine are nothing short of heavenly. After our first abusive half-hour lap I told one of the Yamaha guys I almost felt guilty for pounding the machine so hard. He chuckled confidently and said, “That’s what it loves… keep at it.” I can, and will, get into a more in-depth explanation on the details of these shocks in a future article but for now all you need to know is this. If I was handing out medals for shocks, they would have to create a new Platinum category because the X2 Podiums (ridefox.com) are so much better than anything else I’ve ever tested.

For a rider who is usually happy to set the speed on cruise-control (that’s me), I found myself feeling like I could push harder and ride aggressively. I felt perfectly in control but the racer-like thrill consumed me for the first time riding a SxS or for as long as I can remember. In that moment I was Corry Weller (corryweller.com)…wait, umm…I was Dustin Nelson. Yeah – that’s right.

ITP Mud Lite II

0

ITP today unveiled the Mud Lite II multi-terrain tire, for ATV and side-by-side vehicles. The Mud Lite II features a next generation design with an all-new profile, carcass, tread compound and pattern.

“The original Mud Lite tire, one of the most popular tires in our diverse lineup, was designed for ATVs prior to the introduction of side-by-side vehicles,” stated Rhett Turpin, Head of ITP Sales. “The new Mud Lite II offers the same proven performance as the original, but has been optimized in both profile and design for use with modern side-by-side vehicles.”

To minimize tire flex, increase support and reduce wear, the Mud Lite II tire has unique “tendons” that connect and stretch between the tire’s lugs. The centerline dimpled, v-shaped lugs enhance traction on the trail while the lug height and positioning makes for an incredibly smooth ride on hard pack. The new multi-terrain Mud Lite II carries a robust 6-ply rating and the lug height varies from ¾-inch to 1 1/8-inch, depending on the size. The tire’s shoulder also features an enhanced tread treatment for added sidewall protection and grip.

MUD PROPERTIES

Dimpled center lugs and a re-engineered chevron pattern provide massive forward traction in the mud. This tread design improves bite and enhances the tire’s self-cleaning capabilities. The tire’s shoulder features an innovative mud breaker tread design, which sits slightly raised on the tire between the taller chevron lugs, to channel debris and reduce the dreaded horsepower-robbing suction drag in muddy terrain.

“ITP engineered the next generation Mud Lite II tire with new levels of innovation and integrated technology to meet the modern demands of ATV and side-by-side vehicle owners and riders who seek optimal durability, exceptional performance and versatility from an all-terrain tire,” said Turpin.

The Mud Lite II is available in the following sizes:

– 25×8-12 / 25×10-12
– 26×9-12 / 26×11-12
– 27×9-12 / 27×11-12 / 27×9-14 / 27×11-14
– 28 x9-14 / 28 x11-14
– 30×9-14 / 30×11-14

MSRP will range from $90 – $190 depending on tire size. The Mud Lite II will arrive in dealerships in December 2016.

Since 1982, ITP has been the world’s #1 ATV/UTV aftermarket tire and wheel source. ELKA STAGE 1 SHOCK ABSORBERS

0

Maybe you’ve been noticing the performance of your ATV or SxS’s suspension has been losing some of its ride quality recently.

If you’ve got some spare change in your piggybank, it might be a perfect time to consider upgrading your shocks. While you’ve noticed us upgrading a lot of rideS with Elka’s premium Stage 5 shocks, their Stage 1 shock offerings are nothing short of excellent.

First, Stage 1 Elka’s are model specific. That means they’re tailor-made specifically for your ATV or Side x Side model. Although Stage 1’s are not the ultimate high performance product for say, a racer – they are perfect for recreational sport riders, looking for an immediate improvement in ride quality at trail speeds and occasional high speed running. Elka will even custom tailor the shock valving for your specific weight and riding style.

Stage 1 Elkas are a hard-anodized 36mm diameter HPG aluminum monotube body design. Their internal floating piston engineering with low-friction internals uses Elka’s unique triple sealing system to eliminate gas or oil bypass and bleed-down as you use them.

Threaded spring collars to adjust preload and ride height are the only form of adjustment with this easy-to-use shock upgrade. You won’t need to worry about adjusting damping with clickers because of custom attention Elka pays by custom valving the shocks for the ideal setting for your particular vehicle and rider characteristics.

There’s also a big synthetic snubber at the bottom of the shock shaft to prevent hard bottoming when you use the full extent of your vehicle’s travel.

Beyond the noticeable improvement in ride quality and vehicle control you’ll also notice a reduction in unsprung weight with Stage 1’s, especially if you’re replacing twin tube steel bodied hydraulic or gas cell shocks on your ATV or SxS.

This aftermarket shock upgrade is a perfect example of being able to get a huge change in your off-road vehicle without spending a fortune. We’ve tried them and know you’ll love the difference.

After a qualifying process that included 32,739 competitors, the field was whittled down to representatives from 21 countries. With that, it was Luke Pakkala from Oakville Yamaha that took home 2nd place in the sport bike category offering Yamaha Motor Canada Ltd. its first podium finish at the WTGP!

Leading up to the event, Luke explained how his 10 years of Yamaha dealership experience had helped prepare him for the challenges faced in the competition. The approach Luke and his dealership take with their customers helped him focus on the basics of having thorough product knowledge, good work habits and slowing down. Through his WTGP involvement, Luke is looking to continue to improve his teaching and management skills, noting, “I would like to expand my focus on teaching habits for engaging employees, apprentices and future apprentices.”

The WTGP is an expansion of the Yamaha Technical Academy (YTA) training program that is utilized around the world for technicians based on Yamaha’s own globally standardized guidelines. Once every two years, the elite technicians who won the NTGP in their own country come together at the WTGP in Japan.

The objective of the WTGP is to generate greater motivation and willingness to attain higher skills among Yamaha technicians who were trained in the YTA education program. Specifically, the focus for 2016 was to offer technicians who are making efforts to improve their skill and service performance based on “One to One Service” a platform to showcase their talent.

Reflecting upon the demanding competition and his efforts, Luke praised Yamaha’s willingness, at all levels of business, to listen to employees at the dealership level about what works and what does not.

Nelson and Weller Dominate California

0

KENNESAW, Ga. – October 10, 2016 – Yamaha’s supported Side-by-Side (SxS) racer Dustin Nelson has won the Lucas Oil Regional Off-Road Racing Series of Southern California, followed by Yamaha-supported Corry Weller in the Production 1000 class. The two held the first and second place spots in the series standings the entire season piloting Yamaha’s YXZ1000R pure sport SxS.

Dustin Nelson won the Production 1000 class, with seven first place finishes, placing no lower than second in each race. He finished the series with 430 points in the standings, the only racer to reach 400 points in the series. Corry Weller finished the series in second, with six podium finishes and 397 points. Between the two racers, Yamaha’s YXZ1000R won every race in the series.

“The YXZ1000R was solid, consistent and the manual transmission provided a level of control that the rest of the field could not match,” Nelson said. “And we weren’t just beating the other production models – we were consistently faster than the unlimited class as well. It’s impressive to see an all-new machine come out and dominate so quickly. The YXZ1000R has changed the sport.”

Nelson was the first driver to win in the YXZ1000R after capturing the 2015 Lake Elsinore Grand Prix title just after the all-new YXZ1000R was introduced. He also currently leads the Lucas Oil Regional Series in Arizona with five wins.

Weller, who took second overall in the Lucas Oil California regional series, finished an impressive 47 points ahead of the rest of the Production 1000 class in her YXZ1000R, and is also running second in the Lucas Oil Regional Series in Arizona. She won The Off-Road Championship (TORC) series’ first ever Pro Stock UTV Championship last month, becoming the first driver to win a national championship in the YXZ1000R, and the first woman to win a TORC series of any class.

“The YXZ1000R is changing the game – delivering an unprecedented direct connection between driver and machine and levels of durability and performance never before seen in SxS racing,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s ATV and SxS group marketing manager. “Dustin, Corry and their YXZ1000Rs have owned this series all year. They are amazing competitors with tremendous talent and unmatched machines, and they’ve shown the rest of the field that a new level of performance will be required to compete from now on.”

The YXZ1000R is the world’s first and only pure sport Side-by-Side. It features the first five-speed sequential shift manual transmission and three-cylinder 998cc engine in a SxS, delivering an unmatched direct connection experience between driver and machine. Last month, Yamaha announced a Sport Shift (SS) version of the vehicle, the YXZ1000R SS, delivering a high-tech paddle shifting experience with an automated clutch system eliminating the need for a clutch pedal and opening the pure sport market to a wide range of enthusiasts.
