Polaris RZR Official UTV of Best in the Desert

0

Polaris Industries today announced Polaris RZR is the “Official UTV” of Best In The Desert (BITD) Racing Series and that the company will be sponsoring several BITD races this season starting with the THR Motorsports Parker 250 presented by Polaris RZR.

“Best in the Desert has been at the forefront of promoting desert side-by-side racing, and Polaris RZR is excited to support the series and its racers,” said Craig Scanlon, general manager of Polaris Side-by-Side Vehicles. “Our partnership with Best in the Desert will help us share the off-road racing experience with more people so we can continue to build interest in the sport.”

Along with RZR being the Official UTV of BITD and the presenting sponsor of the THR Motorsports Parker 250, Polaris RZR will be the title sponsor for both The Mint 400 in Las Vegas, NV, on March 13-15, and the first-annual UTV World Championship, to take place in Laughlin, Nevada, February 19-21. Polaris RZR also is the presenting sponsor for the Blue Water Desert Challenge to take place in Parker, Ariz., on October 9-11.

“We are extremely proud to start our 2015 race season and welcome a new partnership with Polaris RZR,” said Casey Folks, director of Best In The Desert. “This is a perfect fit since teams running the Polaris RZR have always been a dominant force at Best In The Desert events. In fact, for 2015, Brandon Schueler enters the season as the reigning Pro UTV Class Champion behind the wheel of his Jagged X Polaris RZR.”

This year’s THR Motorsports Parker 250 presented by Polaris RZR will feature a new two-race format. The race will be split into two separate races; one race for Motorcycles and Quads, and another race for the UTVs. Both races will be run on the same 80-mile loop that features some of the best spectating areas available in off-road desert racing today. The famous “Parker Python” will again be a big part of the course with its thrilling rough sections.

Yamaha Outdoors Sweepstakes

0

Yamaha Outdoors has been a longtime partner and supporter of National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHF Day), an annual celebration of outdoorsmen and women and the important contributions they make to the environment and economy.

To help raise awareness and excitement for NHF Day in 2014, Yamaha donated a Viking Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicle – a new high in the level of support for the day’s events and participants.

Dorothy Jones of Blanks, La., was randomly selected as the winner. An avid hunter, Jones will soon be enjoying the class-leading comfort and superior off-road capability offered by her new 2014 Viking. And she can take pride in knowing that every Viking is assembled in the U.S.A. at Yamaha’s factory in Newnan, Georgia.

In addition to the Viking sweepstakes, Yamaha stepped up in 2014 as the founding sponsor of the all-new NHF Day Live It! Grants – a proactive, grass roots program created to celebrate hunters and anglers and all they do for conservation. Through the Live It! Grant program, NHF Day provided 13 grants to deserving organizations for 2014 NHF Day events that helped further the goal of connecting people to the outdoors.

“We’re very happy to have Yamaha as a sponsor of National Hunting and Fishing Day, and a special thanks to the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative for its founding support of the new Live It! Grants,” said Misty Mitchell, Director of Conservation Programs for Wonders of Wildlife museum in Springfield, Mo. – the official home of NHF Day. “Yamaha vehicle giveaways continue to be a big hit with NHF Day participants, and the Live It! Grant program would not have been possible without Yamaha’s added contributions last year.”

NHF Day falls on the fourth Saturday of September each year and serves as the most effective grassroots effort ever taken to promote outdoor sports and conservation.

Yamaha, through its relationships with organizations such as Ducks Unlimited, Safari Club International, Buckmasters, National Wild Turkey Federation, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and NHF Day, among others, is the leading ATV and SxS manufacturer supporting these conservation efforts.

Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., (YMUS), a leader in the motorsports market, makes the toughest, most capable and versatile ATV and Side-by-Side vehicles. The company’s ever-expanding product offerings also include motorcycles, outboard motors, personal watercraft, snowmobiles, boats, outdoor power equipment, accessories, apparel and much more. YMUS products are sold through a nationwide network of dealers in the United States. RZR Sweetens Pot for 2015 King of the Hammers

0

The King of the Hammers (KOH) is known as the toughest off-road race in the world, and this year, the person who conquers the course will not only go home with “The Hammer,” but also a brand-new, 2015 RZR XP 1000 EPS.

As part of Polaris RZR being the official side-by-side of the race, Polaris sweetened the deal by offering up a RZR XP 1000 EPS to the Pro Class side-by-side winner.

Last year, 26 side-by-sides would vie for “The Hammer” with five-time Hammers Winner Mitch Guthrie winning in his RZR XP 1000 EPS.

“A majority of King of the Hammers’ Pro racers choose to race RZR,” said Jason DiFuccia, director of Marketing for Polaris Off-Road Vehicles. “So we figured they’d like a new RZR XP 1000 for winning. We look forward to presenting the 2015 Pro SxS winner with the keys.”

The 2015 King of the Hammers race will take place on Wednesday, February 4, at Means Dry Lake, in Landers, Calif. More information can be found here.

DRIVING THE Z1100 TURBO WILDCAT

0

Ever stop and wonder what it feels like behind the wheel of a side-x-side capable of 290 horsepower?

Once you buckle in and drive the Z1100 Turbo you’re left wanting more thanks to the craftsmanship and engineering PACE Offroad has put into the development of its cars.

What does power to weight have to do with PACE Offroad’s Z1100 Turbo? Everything – more specifically everything done just right!

While manufacturers have their hands tied with ever-mounting government regulations and the 1000cc engine displacement cap, PACE’s Z1100 Turbo Wildcat and XPZ1100 Turbo RZR represent a new breed of high output side-x-sides intended for racing.

Greg Biffle and his crew at PACE Offroad have confidently done more than just shoehorn an 1100 Turbo motor into the chassis of a Wildcat or RZR. Testing has spanned years. They’ve also successfully mastered suspension, clutching and overall chassis dynamics to harness the power output of the 1100 turbo mill.

Our initial testing took place at the Imperial Sand Dunes – commonly known as Glamis where deep sand, steep razorbacks, huge hills and massive whoops are all commonplace.

You can have lots of fun in a stock Wildcat or XP1K, but if you’re stuck behind a PACE Offroad Z1100 Turbo, you might as well get used to eating dust.

At 177 horsepower our Z1100 just kept pulling up the longest hills and through the roughest whooped out sections. The torque from this motor seemed endless and the suspension was simply bottomless!

Bump the boost to Dune/Trail mode and 245 ponies, mate with a perfectly balanced chassis and roost sand 70 feet in the air. In full-on race mode, the 290 horsepower Wildcat made a mockery of stock RZRs while drag racing up Oldsmobile Hill, then back to the bottom blitzing through the huge whoops at 60 mph before the XP1K even reached the top.

To say we’re impressed with our Pace Offroad Z1100 Turbo Wildcat would be a gross understatement. At the base 177 horses, the Z1100 Turbo Wildcat and XPZ1100 Turbo RZR are what we’d love every side-x-side to be right out of the crate.

At 245 horsepower and at a price point that is very affordable these are a dream come true and until government regulations loosen and the OEMs can produce their own vehicles capable of these numbers, PACE Offroad is without a doubt the best source for diehards with the need for speed.

PACE OFFROAD Z1100 TURBO WILDCAT

0

If you’ve been following our Z1100 Turbo Wildcat build on Dirt Trax Television you’ve no doubt become familiar with PACE Offroad and its founder Greg Biffle.

The products being designed at PACE offroad are composed of equal parts ingenuity, precision, performance and quality. To say we’ve been impressed with this company would be an understatement.

Building high performance sport side-x-sides is more than a passion for Greg and his team. The fruits of their labor have now established a benchmark in craftsmanship that even most OEM’s would have a hard time holding a candle to.

PACE Offroad offers performance builds for the Polaris RZR XP1K and the Arctic Cat Wildcat. While differences between these builds are primarily in the chassis, the heart of the upgrade comes from the 177 horsepower Z1100 turbo Suzuki mill commonly found in Arctic Cat’s 9000 series snowmobiles.

While the Z1100 turbo and its massive intercooler are impressive, it is the additional work to clutching, suspension and electrical that takes this vehicle’s performance to new heights.

All Z1100 engine swaps are ground up builds and the in-house hand built wiring harness is one of the most critical pieces. Built with mill spec wire and factory plug and play connectors the PACE built harness is fully heat shrunk to ensure a long life and proper electrical power to the right places including full upfitter switches and a 3-step boost control.

With safety and engine reliability being the driving force behind the custom made wiring harness and programmed ECU, the engine will not make boost until it reaches at least 120 degrees.

In Dune/Trail mode the 15lbs of boost generates between 225-230 ponies. Step up the boost in Race Mode and fill it up with 108 octane fuel and you’ll see about 28 pounds of boost nearing the 290-horsepower mark!

With so much horsepower at your fingertips you’d think the chance of overheating or burning down the motor would be likely. However, care has gone into ensuring you can run a 280hp car through the dunes without having to worry about breaking it.

Programmed into the ECU is an automatic motor shut down control that occurs between 235-240 degrees engine temp. Before a full shut down the ECU constantly monitors for detonation and will pull boost and automatically adjusts timing ensuring the motor can essentially last forever.

Check back next week for our performance and handling impressions of the PACE Offroad Z1100 Turbo in Glamis!

CAN A RANGER PLOW SNOW?

Dear Motorhead:

I enjoyed Luke’s recent review of the Ranger 570. I do have one additonal question about the 570 not covered in his review.

I live in upstate NY and would like to know if this model is capable of serious snow plowing?

Thanks,

Ken

Ken:

Thanks for your email!

The 570 mid-size Ranger will capably plow snow for residential use.

Your question used the word “serious” in relation to its snow plow potential. IMO if I was buying a Ranger to do heavy duty snow removal I would go for the XP 900 Ranger with its “shuttle shifter” that isolates Lo and Reverse from the shift pattern and has a heavier and bigger footprint.

The 570 is a very capable vehicle but for industrial work I would consider the XP.

Hope this helps,

Motorhead Mark
