2015 KYMCO MXU 700 EPS LE

0

2015 marks some aggressive updates to an aging Kymco lineup and we had an opportunity to evaluate several cool offerings this past week in South Carolina – notably an updated MXU 700 available in 2015 with electronic power steering.

EPS was an incredibly welcome addition to the MXU and made a considerable difference in the handling of the front end.

Significantly less muscle is now required to maneuver through tight tree-lined trails and massive hits from rocks and harsh nose down landings that could literally end a day of riding are dramatically softened.

We’ve had many readers ask us when Kymco was going to add power steering to its ATV line as the front end handling of the base model MXU is a workout and delivers a harsher than expected ride over rollers and rough trail. This first generation EPS makes a world of difference to the handling of this vehicle. We’ll be happy if Kymco continues to evolve its power steering system, as we’d like to see slightly more input and a smoother regression as speed builds.

The MXU 700 EPS LE simply drips with showroom appeal boasting glimmering plastic and some unique chrome accents that absolutely pop in the sunlight. Maxxis Bighorns wrap around beautiful black wheels and offer durability and traction to tackle slick, mud-covered hills with ease.

The digital gauge is easy to read and tubular steel racks although rudimentary, are functional and capable of loading up with gear as needed. There’s also a handy winch to help get you unstuck from anything the combination of low range, 4 wheel drive and aggressive meats simply cannot handle.

We think Kymco missed an opportunity to add upgraded shocks to the LE package. A set of more durable, piggyback clickers from Fox or Walker Evans would increase the value of this unit and also provide much needed adjustability to tailor your ride to its desired level. Although they do their job, the stock shocks tend to pack up at times in big rollers and their springs felt too soft for our riding style.

Kymco’s 695cc fuel injected powerhouse propels this ATV forward with enough vigor to satisfy most riders. We noted it felt really soft off engagement and a bit lazy at initial squeeze of the throttle, but as power builds to mid range it operates smoothly and continues to a strong enough top end for aggressive trail speeds.

This writer is a fan of dual-lever hand brakes especially when they work independently of one another to modulate either front of rear brakes. The setup on the MXU 700 LE works admirably and we had plenty of opportunity to test it out as we navigated tight wooded areas and slippery slopes throughout the Big Buck GNCC course. This system is a win and we’d like to see it standard across Kymco’s full sport utility ATV line.

Is the 2015 MXU 700 EPS LE the answer to all your ATV prayers? Maybe not, but if you’re browsing through a Kymco dealership, we think you’ll be mighty tempted to park your cheeks on its seat and if you’re a current MXU owner that’s been patiently waiting for lighter handling, this is definitely your year.

CAN-AM MAVERICK RACERS NOTCH BAJA 500, GNCC WINS

Can-Am Maverick 1000R side-by-side pilot Marc Burnett won Class 19 at the 2014 Tecate SCORE International Baja 500 race held this past weekend in Baja California, Mexico.

In Ohio, fellow Maverick racer Kyle Chaney won the XC1 Modified side-by-side class at the Wiseco John Penton Grand National Cross Country race in Ohio. Can-Am ATV racers also had a great weekend sweeping their respective podiums in the GNCC 4×4 Pro class and in the New England ATV Motocross Pro class.

“Highlighted by Maverick racer Marc Burnett’s dominating victory in the SCORE Baja 500, we had several Can-Am racers win their class either on an ATV or in a side-by-side. Burnett, Kyle Chaney and our GNCC 4×4 Pros have been outstanding this year” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “With wins in gnarly terrain like Baja, the challenging GNCC series in Ohio and at the Maine NEATV-MX race, our racers, once again, proved – no matter the Can-Am vehicle — our guys will challenge for the win at every event.”

SCORE Baja 500

MB Motorsports / Can-Am racer Marc Burnett had a stellar weekend on the Baja Peninsula, earning the top spot in the Class 19 side-by-side ranks at the 46th Tecate SCORE Baja 500. Going into the race, Burnett had to make a late scramble to replace the engine in his Monster Energy-themed Can-Am Maverick 1000R, but overcame that challenge and then put the hammer down as he put together a dominating run.

“We worked tremendously hard for this win. My entire crew and myself did not get any sleep for four days. We overcame some challenges to fight our way to the top of the podium. We are very dedicated to winning the championship with the Can-Am Maverick,” said Burnett.

Burnett, who piloted the No. 1905 the entire race, finished with a time of 13:01:56. He and his navigator Fernando Flores averaged a speed of 34.33 mph to take the top spot on the podium and sole possession of the Class 19 points lead. Out of 17 racers, he was one of only nine racers to finish the 2014 course, which measured more than 445 miles in length. All three Can-Am Maverick 1000R teams that entered completed the race.

Burnett earned his second win of ’14 and the third in three races for Can-Am, which is currently 1-2 in the class standings. Round-two winners Derek and Jason Murray finished seventh in their Murray Racing / Can-Am / ITP-backed Maverick 1000R. Maverick 1000R racer Cory Sappington of Desert Toyz / Can-Am was eighth and is currently fourth in the standings.

GNCC – John Penton

The AMSOIL GNCC series held the 25th running of the John Penton GNCC in Millfield, Ohio. Can-Am racers had an outstanding weekend, winning all four 4×4 classes and taking home the top spot in the XC1 Modified side-by-side class. Can-Am ATV racers scored all 12 podium spots in the 4×4 classes and were led by ATV Parts Plus / Can-Am Renegade 800R X xc rider Bryan Buckhannon, who won the 4×4 Pro class.

Can-Am X-Team racers Kevin Trantham and Jordan Philips, respectively, joined him on the podium. The victory moved him to within seven points of Trantham, the class leader. Can-Am also swept the other three 4×4 classes, with victories going to Tanner Bowles (4×4 A/B; seven wins in a row), Nick Eichelberger (4×4 C; 4 wins in ‘14) and Chris Bragg (4×4 Sr.; first victory).

“I made the switch this year from the Outlander to the Renegade…the ATV is perfect now. This is the best race I had all season,” said Buckhannon.

The John Penton venue also hosted round four of the GNCC SxS Championship Series. Kyle Chaney (Chaney Racing / Turnkey UTV / Can-Am) claimed his second straight XC1 Modified class victory to grow his points lead to 13.

Crash Addict / PARCS / Can-Am pilot Treavis Poynter battled from the fifth row to earn a hard-fought second-place finish behind Chaney to give Can-Am a 1-2 finish. A total of six Can-Am vehicles finished in the top 10 at round four and seven are currently in the top 10 in the class points race. Can-Am Maverick 1000R side-by-side pilots Dave Plavi (Crash Addict / PARCS / Can-Am) and Marcus Pratt (Jack’s Excavating II / Can-Am) each made the XC2 Modified podium.

“The Maverick worked awesome and really handled the course. It was probably the tightest track we’ve seen all season and we didn’t have a single issue,” said Chaney. The lappers were a bit thick towards the end, but we kept the distance between us and second place.”

NEATV-MX – Round 4

Can-Am DS 450 racers swept the ATV Pro class podium at round four of the NEATV-MX series held at Hemond’s MX in Minot, Maine. Canadian Can-Am X-Team Pro Keven Vachon won the Pro class and was joined on the box by reigning champion Travis Moore and Josh Creamer. The Pro-Am podium also featured two Can-Am ATVs, as Creamer edged Moore for the victory. Mathieu Deroy was fourth.

Yamaha Announces All-New 2015 Viking VI SxS

Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., announces a new utility Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicle: the all-new 2015 Viking VI EPS six-person SxS.

The extended cab Viking VI combines Yamaha performance and durability with the comfort and convenience of a Viking – now with maximum headroom, legroom and shoulder room for six occupants. Every Yamaha Viking and Viking VI is being assembled in the U.S.A. at Yamaha’s factory in Newnan, Georgia, for worldwide distribution.

Similar to the three-seat Viking introduced last summer, the new Viking VI is made for tough off-road duty boasting Yamaha’s industry-leading UltramaticTM fully automatic transmission, On-Command four-wheel drive system, Electric Power Steering (EPS) and Yamaha’s proven and powerful 700cc-class engine. With 600-pounds hauling and 1,500 pounds towing, Viking VI is made to be the toughest, hardest working and most off-road capable six-person SxS ever.

“Yamaha’s latest all-new Side-by-Side, the Viking VI, is a comfortable, convenient, tough and off-road capable vehicle, and we expect to see it working ranches and hauling hunters from Texas to California, Oregon to Pennsylvania and everywhere in between,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s ATV/SxS group marketing manager. “The Viking VI is the natural evolution of a platform and concept that has captured awards, praise and market share since we launched the initial Viking last summer. Yamaha customers are excited and dealers are primed – we’re on the gas and expanding our SxS line today and for years to come.”

Yamaha performance and durability makes the Viking VI an immediate category leader, and Viking configuration makes it the most comfortable and convenient six-person SxS in the industry. The Viking VI was designed with more cab room for all occupants than any competing vehicle.

CLASS-LEADING CAB COMFORT and CONVENIENCE

Built on a new frame, the Viking VI chassis features six comfortable and secure bucket seats – each with 3-point seat belts and headrests – set within a walk-through cab design. Similar to the original Viking, the middle seats are purposefully reclined five degrees providing more shoulder room for all occupants. Dedicated passenger handholds and foot rests add to the comfort and long list of features that set this vehicle apart from other vehicles in the multi-passenger, multi-purpose segment.

Viking operators will appreciate the automotive-style driver position with simple and intuitive access to dash- mounted controls, an adjustable driver seat, and a full digital display panel with speedometer, odometer, trip meters and fuel level. Conveniences for all occupants include eight cup holders throughout the cab, a sealed storage container under the center front seat, additional storage under the remaining front seats, a large glove box on the front panel, and two DC power outlets – one in front and another in back. The cab is all wrapped within a ROPS US OSHA/ISO3471 certified enclosure.

Complementing cab comfort is the ride itself, which is smooth and predictable with an extended wheelbase that helps smooth out bumps, optimized all-wheel independent suspension with 8.1 inches of travel to absorb rough terrain, and strong and natural feeling hydraulic disc brakes all around that provide solid and secure stopping power.

OFF-ROAD TERRAINABILITY and CLASS-LEADING HANDLING

Yamaha gets consistently high marks for its 4×4 vehicles’ off-road capabilities and handling in large part to industry-exclusive and leading technologies like UltramaticTM transmission, On-Command® four-wheel drive and Electric Power Steering (EPS).

Yamaha’s Ultramatic fully-automatic transmission incorporates a CVT system with centrifugal clutch that has been proven to be the industry’s most durable by maintaining constant belt tension (no slamming belts or jerky transitions). If maintaining the industry’s best belt life wasn’t enough, the Ultramatic system also features a sprag clutch that engages natural-feeling engine braking, which is a key component when navigating tight turns and steep hills – especially with passengers and cargo.

The On-Command system puts the driver in control of engaging one of three settings: 2WD, 4WD or 4WD with a fully locked front differential, simply by turning the rotary dial on the left side of the dash. Compared to other systems in the industry, there is no guessing, waiting or slipping before all four wheels grab terrain with On- Command.

Precise steering no matter the occupancy or load comes from a number of design and performance features, and one of the most significant is Yamaha’s industry-leading Electric Power Steering. Steering assist from EPS helps lighten the effort and reduce fatigue especially over long periods of operation, with heavy loads and in rough terrain. But Yamaha’s system also provides the most natural feeling assist with just the right amount of feedback – no floating or inconsistent steering feel – due to its specially designed rack and pinion layout and overall EPS setting.

Reaching down to the ground are all-new Maxxis Big Horn tires that were designed exclusively for Yamaha and optimized specifically for the Viking VI. Their aggressive tread patterns and reputation for durability are similar to the original Viking, but the construction and pressure setting have been optimized for the VI. In short, the new tires contribute to the vehicles overall comfort, handling and durability.

POWERFUL and PROVEN ENGINE

The Viking VI pulls power from a 686cc 4-stroke, liquid-cooled, SOHC, single-cylinder, 4-valve, fuel-injected engine proven on Viking and optimized for the Viking VI. The engine gets a redesigned intake system, fuel injection and ignition advance mapping, plus changes in the clutch specification to power up for the larger platform and achieve strong, smooth power and acceleration from extremely low speeds up through to the high- speed range. Ultimately, it is the most powerful 4×4 engine Yamaha has ever produced, and it makes plenty of power to handle the Viking VI at maximum capacity.

REAL WORLD TOUGH & UTILITY

The Viking VI engine is positioned under the vehicle’s rear cargo bed allowing for easy access and simple maintenance. Its large capacity air intake system, which contributes to the engine’s strong power delivery, is also easy to access and maintain incorporating a reusable, large-capacity foam air filter positioned under the middle rear seat. It is easily accessible from the cabin without tools to clean or change in the field or shop.

The large flat rear cargo bed is made of steel, designed for excellent load capacity, and is rated to carry up to 600 pounds of cargo. At 14-cubic-feet of cargo space with no wheel wells, a full pallet fits flush and the bed has standard tie down hooks and one-touch tilt assist. A standard two-inch receiver hitch out back tows an additional 1,500 pounds.

Unique to the category, the Viking VI incorporates steel skid plates across the entire undercarriage: front-to-back and side-to-side, and the chassis is swept up on each side to reduce potential for friction in rough terrain. Also unique to the Viking line is row crop friendly track width.

The all-new Viking VI comes in Hunter Green, Red, and Realtree AP® HD camo. MSRP for standard versions starts at 12,799 for non-EPS and $13,799 for EPS models. A Viking VI EPS Special Edition in Matte Silver with Soft Suntop comes with an MSRP of $14,999 and incorporates aluminum wheels, overfenders, mud flaps, a soft sun top, a sealed storage compartment under the left rear seat and Yamaha’s bed rail accessory mounts.

Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., (YMUS) a leader in the motorsports market, makes the toughest, most capable and versatile ATV and Side-by-Side vehicles. The company’s ever-expanding product offerings also include motorcycles, outboard motors, personal watercraft, snowmobiles, boats, outdoor power equipment, accessories, apparel and much more. YMUS products are sold through a nationwide network of dealers in the United States. Headquartered in Cypress, Calif., since its incorporation in 1976, Yamaha also has facilities in Wisconsin and Georgia, as well as factory operations in Tennessee and Georgia.

2015 YAMAHA VIKING VI

We’ve been anxiously awaiting the next variation on the strong-selling Yamaha Viking introduced last year and today marks the official intro of the next generation.

The 2015 Viking VI is a 6-seat, stretched version of the original 3-seater. Built on a new frame, the 6-passenger Vike uses individual bucket seating complete with seatbelts and headrests for each rider.

Like the original Viking that has the middle seat placed slightly behind and tilted 5-degrees back compared to the outside front seats, the Viking VI uses the same layout only carries the middle seat technology to the backseats as well (Note: The drivers seat is adjustable).

Power comes from the same torque-blessed EFI 686cc single used in the 3-up version and Yamaha’s super-reliable Ultramatic CVT with electric selectable and locking 4-wheel-drive. Electrically assisted power steering is standard on the VI.

Maxxis Bighorns are the meat-of-the-day and the VI’s suspension delivers 8.1-inches of travel all the way around.

Combined with the cool tires and ample ground clearance (11.4-inches), Yamaha’s On-Command 4WD system pretty much guarantees this 6-place ride will handle the slimiest goop you can find – even with a full load of humans onboard.

It’s interesting to note the Viking VI’s engine is mounted way back, under the cargo bed for maximum weight distribution when the buckets are full.

There are steel skidplates underneath to protect the undercarriage from rocks and stumps and the bodywork is swept up on each side “to reduce potential for friction in rough terrain”.

We’ll be doing a more detailed report on the Viking VI in DirtTrax magazine soon.

OFFSHORE PURE SPORT SIDE-X-SIDE

Here’s one we didn’t see coming: CFMoto, a Chinese manufacturer, has rung the bell hard with the intro of a couple of very credible performance off-road vehicles and have leap-frogged over the Japanese in this red-hot category.

The Snyper (in Canada) and Z-Force (in the USA) are performance off-road vehicles of the ilk of the RZR, Maverick and Wildcat in that they are primarily focused on sport riding as opposed to utility function.

How serious are these CFMoto models? Pretty serious, really. The 600 uses a 594cc single with EFI and although it has emulsion hydraulic shocks at all four corners, there’s plenty of suspension travel and ground clearance.

At 52-inches wide it meets the needs of trail riders and with classy supportive seats and very cool aluminum wheels just plain looks great. We’ve observed fit and finish to be very good on the 600.

Just arriving in Canada while you’re reading this is the Snyper 800EX. Although we expect it to be available in the USA eventually, so far we’re not sure when.

The 800 uses a big 800cc EFI V-twin and comes with Elka gas shocks all around. It looks very much like the 600 featuring double wishbones front and rear and a CVTech drive system, but is about 8-inches wider. Full selectable 4WD is standard.

We’ll be testing the 800 EX soon and are anxiously awaiting the opportunity. We’re pretty impressed with what we’ve seen so far and are even more impressed this company has covered the bases so well and so quickly in the performance marketplace.

North American Pure Sport SXS Dominance

0

There’s no doubt the performance SxS market is booming. If rabid interest in the Wildcat, Maverick and RZR wasn’t enough evidence, all you have to do is talk to dealers and you’ll find out how amazing the growth of this segment has become over the last three years.

With all the focus on the above three products and their sub-models, it almost looks like Can-Am, Polaris and Arctic Cat have the competition covered.

So far there certainly doesn’t seem to be much response from Japanese manufacturers like Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and the absent from the market Suzuki and we’re not sure why.

It may have something to do with potential product liability concerns but – how do you explain those same companies’ obsession with building radical bullet bikes for the street or ultra race-focused motocross and enduro iron?

The fact is: The powersports business runs on a certain element of risk and it’s what defines the personalities of people who buy powersport products.

2015 RANGER XP 900 Gets 13 Percent Power Boost
