WIENEN CLAIMS WORLD MX RACING CHAMPIONSHIP

0

Press Release –

Team Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 EFI ATV racer Chad Wienen is the inaugural Pro-class World MX Racing Champion after the final weekend of racing for the series.

This after the Team Motoworks / Can-Am semi-truck carrying Wienen’s race ATV and all the team’s equipment caught fire on the way to the Anza, CA track a day before the final two rounds were set to start. After working all night Friday to prep another DS 450, the race team was ready to battle hard for the championship.

“I arrived at the scene minutes after the fire was extinguished. What I saw was devastating; thank the Lord no one was injured. To see the Motoworks team rally together like they did and overcome all the adversity thrown at them this weekend was impressive,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Racing Manager for Can-Am ATVs at BRP. “This type of perseverance is of what championship teams are made. Congratulations to Chad and the entire Motoworks organization on their championship win.”

The racers battled the rain and mud during the course of the doubleheader weekend. In the first moto during Saturday’s Round 7 action at Cahuilla Creek MX Park, Wienen would have to settle for second overall in the tough conditions. Going into Sunday’s Round 8, Wienen knew he just had to finish the motos to claim the Pro-class championship.

In the first moto he was battling for the lead when a coolant line came loose, forcing him to back off a bit and finish third. The second moto saw Wienen quickly pass for the lead where he would stay until the checkered flag.

Wienen’s Pro-class teammate, Jeremie Warnia, was absent for the final two rounds as he was in France racing a Motoworks-prepped DS 450 in the famous Le Touquet Beach Race on the English Channel. Warnia raced to the win during the three-hour race, beating second place by almost four minutes.

Racer Quotes

“It was pretty nerve-wracking with the rig catching on fire and the bikes getting destroyed. I think the worst part of it was for the crew because they put so much work into everything they do. They felt really prepared going into this last round and to have something like this happen was really heartbreaking for everyone. But my mechanic Ryan Cox and the rest of the team are the best and they came through and worked almost all night to make sure that I would be able to race; I really have to thank those guys for all their hard work.” – Chad Wienen

“It felt really good to go out and take a championship for Can-Am, especially it being my first year with the team. Now that this series is over, we are going to focus on testing and getting the bikes fine tuned and also training so that we are ready for Nationals in March.” – Chad Wienen

Got Mud? Jacksonville Texas Hosts Mudstock

0

In the magazine biz we do our fair share of riding but when Arctic Cat’s Kale Wainer requested my attendance at an event called Mudstock, I had no idea what was to follow.

Arctic Cat had selected a rogue group of ATV editors to “race” its new made-for-mud 4-wheeler, the 700 H1 MudPro. With not much more information to go on I immediately started to dig around the internet to find out everything I could about this Mudstock deal.

Thanks to Google, in a matter of minutes it was abundantly clear what was going on. The race was going to be an extremely muddy affair (and I mean waist deep and more). No amount of skill, endurance or past riding experience could prepare us for the sloppiness to come.

You’ve Never Seen Mud Like This

Jacksonville, Texas is best known for its world famous tomatoes, weekly rodeos, Southern Baptists and now… Mudstock.

Held at the 2000-acre Mud Creek Off-Road Park, ATV fanatics from all over North America flock there in droves with modified quads in tow, ready to challenge the mud pit. This is no ordinary mud crossing.

We’re talking about the biggest, deepest, sloppiest Olympic sized pool of swamp sludge ever. Standing on the banks of the 4-foot deep mud pit and witnessing one modified quad after another stall, sputter and come to rest halfway across was a humbling experience that left the media racers feeling a bit hopeless.

The only person feeling more discouraged than we were was Cat’s Wainer. The reality of what was likely to happen was hitting him like a freight train.

Considering the countless number of veteran mud riders on outrageously modified, made-for-mud quads that had to be winched out race after race, combined with the fact we were riding a brand-new, stock product with zero mud crossing experience, had Kale’s head spinning.

What if none of the media made it across? Awkward. What if none of the media made it even half way? Embarrassing. What if the thousands of spectators who were already skeptical about a stock machine getting across, laughed and pointed and posted the embarrassing results on You Tube? Yikes.

The MudPro Delivers

The trepidation on Kale’s face was unneccessary. Turns out the MudPro was more than ready for the challenge. The 700 H1 EFI has a torquey 695cc, SOHC, single-cylinder engine, with its EFI system specially mapped to have a wider torque curve for mud slogging.

The machine sits an impressive 14-inches off the ground, has 10-inches of travel and comes stock with deep lugged MAXXIS ‘Zilla tires. There’s a way-cool and fully functional, elevated intake and clutch snorkel allowing you to go deeper and ultimately farther in impossibly wet conditions.

It’s also geared lower for better lugging in both high and low range and the springs and shocks are recalibrated to suit the big tires and to absorb surprise underwater hits to the suspension.

What seemed like an eternity watching the mud hole swallow machine after machine now turned into both anticipation and panic as, finally, it was go-time. With the MudPro in low range, four of us at a time penetrated the mire and instantly found ourselves in uncomfortable territory.

To call it a race is off the mark. Any race I’ve ever been in usually requires some degree of velocity. In mud crossing, your first priority is balance. Tip-in the throttle too abruptly and the front end goes straight up in the air – the ATV is basically floating in four feet of muck.

As you ease off the throttle, the front end planes out again. While this is happening you’re trying to find the best position to keep from tipping left or right too far and taking the swim of your life.

Obviously, trying to steer in this guck is next to impossible and experienced mudders tell me the trick is to “lean turn”, however, these guys aren’t worried about how much mud fills their waders. This balancing act goes on continuously throughout the race while inching closer and closer to dry land at the other side. When all was said and done, every Arctic Cat MudPro (and editor) made it across and, in doing so, made Kale a very proud Papa.

It’s Great to be a Mudder

The 700 H1 EFI MudPro is truly the ultimate stock mud quad. Although this segment represents a mere sliver of the ATV market, Arctic Cat has chosen to own it, and own it they do.

The risk of having this experiment potentially backfire paid off as thousands witnessed eight inexperienced mud-wookies accomplish something on stock machines that many seasoned mud riders were unable to do on seriously modified vehicles.

Kudos to Arctic Cat for having big-time confidence in its product and for having the conviction to let it all hang out. Expect to see the pits filled with MudPros at next year’s Mudstock.

BRP TAKES OPENING ROUND OF WORLD MX CHAMPIONSHIP

0

Press Release –

Team Motoworks / Can-Am racer Chad Wienen swept both motos to take the overall win at the opening round of the DWT World MX Racing Championship near Mesquite, AZ.

Wienen quickly worked his way to the front of the field in the first Pro 450 moto for the win, and took the holeshot during the second moto and never looked back aboard his Can-Am DS 450. His teammate, Jeremie Warnia took second overall in the opening round.

“The entire Motoworks team worked hard this weekend and both Chad and Jeremie are going very fast on their DS 450s this season,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Racing Manager for Can-Am ATVs at BRP. “This first race was a great kickoff to the upcoming season and we are looking forward to solid results and championships in 2010 from the Motoworks / Can-Am team.”

The next day, racers took to the track and contested the second round of the series as part of a doubleheader weekend at Mesquite MX Park.

Wienen looked to continue his excellent results from the previous day, but would have to settle for second overall as he went 2-2 for the Pro-class motos. Warnia raced to fourth overall during the second round, going 3-4 in the Pro class.

Dillon Zimmerman had a decent showing in the Pro class with two top-10 finishes on his Motoworks DS 450 for the weekend as well. The next race in the series is January 2 at Glen Helen Raceway near San Bernardino, CA.

Racer Quotes

“My hat’s off to the Motoworks / Can-Am crew and Ryan Cox, my mechanic. They have all been doing a fantastic job so far and I think we are going to have a great year in 2010.” – Chad Wienen

“My bike was running very well and I had no problems all weekend. I think this is going to be a fun series and I am looking forward to the rest of the rounds.” – Jeremie Warnia

TEAM CHRISTY & ITP CLINCH BAJA ATV CHAMPIONSHIP

0

Press Release –

After a long and dusty season in the desert, Christy Racing wrapped up the SCORE International Class 24 and Overall Pro ATV titles with a determined ride at the final event of 2009, the Baja 1000.

With wins at the San Felipe 250 and the Baja 500 earlier in the year, the team needed only to complete the 1000 to clinch the 450 class championship.

But the overall title was still up for grabs, depending on the outcome of the race. The Baja 1000 win was out of reach for the Christy’s team this time (they won in 2008), but a strong third place finish was enough to take series overall honors by a narrow four point margin.

Led by team owner Craig Christy, the Duncan Racing-prepped Honda TRX450R started strong in the Baja 1000, with ex-GNCC Pro rider and OMA Champion Andy Lagzdins putting in a steady and conservative ride to put the team in the hunt early.

After an extended stint by Steve Abrego around the San Felipe area, Joe Bernal ran up the edge of the Sea of Cortez and handed the machine to 2008 Best in the Desert Pro champ Dave Scott. As night fell on the Baja peninsula, the lights also went out on the Honda, requiring stator replacement at the halfway mark of the race.

After this setback, Scott raced through the most demanding section of the course: Mike’s Sky Ranch. Avoiding overturned buggies and broken trucks in the early hours of the morning, Scott persevered and handed the quad back to Lagzdins for the run up the Pacific coast.

Coming into Santo Tomas with the ITP Holeshot XCT-clad machine working flawlessly, Lagzdins handed off to Christy, who would endure the last leg of the course to the finish.

Christy crossed the line after 29 hours of grueling terrain and challenges to secure his first SCORE Overall Championship. One set of ITP Holeshot tires lasted the entire Baja 1000 race, and their legendary ITP reliability and performance made yet another championship possible.

The SCORE International Series is considered by many to be the pinnacle of endurance racing, and Team Christy’s success couldn’t have been realized without the help and support of ITP Tires, Duncan Racing, Elka Suspension, Moose Racing, Alpinestars, Rockstar Energy Drink, PWR Radiators, Cycle Gear and DirtFirst.

CAT TAKES THIRD OVERALL IN BEST-IN-THE-DESERT

Press Release –

Prowler XTZ Takes on the Fully-Modified UTV Class

By any stretch of the imagination, the goal for Arctic Cat/ Bi-Polar Prowler race team for the 2009 race season was daunting: Compete against fully-modified UTVs in the seven-event Best-In-The-Desert (BITD) off-road race series using a stock Prowler XTZ 1000 H2. And by any measure, third place overall is an exceptional accomplishment.

“We came into this series committed to show the world that the major stock components comprising a Prowler XTZ can run with the wild, one-off creations that our competition use,” said team owner/driver Jim Creagan of Yacolt, Wash. “Aside from the required roll cage, extra lighting and King shocks, our Prowler is stock, including the engine, axles and suspension arms. That makes it very satisfying to blow past the other guys.”

While the 1000 H2 EFI engine delivered speeds the fully-modified UTVs couldn’t match, BITD races throw down wicked-rough routes of rocks, holes, ledges, drop-offs and miles of whoops.

Nevertheless, the Arctic Cat/ Bi-Polar team attacked each race in the Nevada desert with the same go-for-it attitude that delivered a 1-2 finish in last year’s Baja 1000 off-road race. Two second-place finishes in the series’ longest races proved the durability of the team and Prowler, while top-fives at other events showed their consistency. Seven races entered, seven finished for third place overall series, which is an accomplishment few teams can claim.

Just as impressive, this was the first season of racing the BITD series for the team.

“Knowing the race courses makes a huge difference,” remarked Creagan. “With a year’s experience, we’ll return next year in a better position to challenge for race wins and the series championship.”

The team’s success coupled with the Prowler’s outstanding durability was an impressive combination that drew the immediate respect of other racers.

“The Nevada desert is an unforgiving place,” said Ted Bettin, Arctic Cat ATV Race Coordinator. “For a first-year effort, to finish every race and take third overall in the series proves the best-in-class performance and durability of our machines.”

The Arctic Cat/ Bi-Polar race team is sponsored by Arctic Cat, GBC Motorsports, TrailReady Beadlock Rims, Tire Balls, Vision X Lighting, King Shocks and Dragonfire Racing
