NELSON CAPTURES 2008 QUADCROSS CROWN!

0

Press Release –

Yamaha factory rider Dustin Nelson put in a dominating performance at Round 8 of the 2008 ITP/Yamaha QuadCross Championship Series, running away with both motos at Competitive Edge MX in Hesperia, California.

His overall win here was enough to clinch the overall series title with one round remaining.

Nelson, the 2006 series champion, led the season point standings from the first event in March, winning at the series opener and following that up with three more victories and two additional top-three finishes.

Throughout this impressive streak, the 29-year-old from Ramona, California, used ITP QuadCross MX PRO tires mounted on ITP T-9 Pro Series wheels on all four corners of his YFZ450 — a great choice considering the wide variety of track surfaces encountered during the series, from loose loam to hardpacked clay.

The final event of the series takes place at Glen Helen Raceway on November 30th. For more information, visit www.itpquadcross.com.

David Knight Races ATV for GNCC Finale in Indiana

0

Press Release –

GNCC Bike Champion will try four wheels, opens opportunity for two-wheeled stars

The Can-Am Grand National Cross Country community is bracing for an unprecedented showdown when Can-Am Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) dirt bike Champion David Knight lines up on an ATV to compete against the series’ best four-wheeled pilots this weekend at the Klotz Ironman GNCC here.

“I’m really looking forward to competing in the quad race at the final GNCC of the year,” says Knight, a member of Team Red Bull KTM. “I’m not expecting any great results; it’s just a bit of fun. I’ve only raced a quad at Weston Beach Race, and that’s a lot different than a GNCC course. I’m just hoping to finish and have some fun doing the race. Then, on Sunday, I’ll get some time to say goodbye to all the friends I’ve made during the last two years.”

At the Ironman, ATVs will race on Saturday, October 25, and dirt bikes on Sunday, October 26.

After claiming the 2007 and 2008 GNCC Championship on bikes, and winning 14 out of the 24 races in which he competed, next season Knight will return home to compete in Europe’s World Enduro Championship. This weekend’s race may be the last opportunity to see the Isle of Man native compete in the U.S.

The top ATV stars look forward to a friendly challenge from Knight, who recently finished fourth out of 374 entries racing in the ATV portion of the Weston Beach Race in England.

“No matter where he finishes, I would like to see him put his full heart into it and push hard for the whole two hours,” says GNCC ATV Champion Bill Ballance. “That way he’ll really get the full experience and know what we do.”

“Win or lose, it’s great exposure for us,” says veteran ATV pro Johnny Gallagher.

Barry Hawk is the king of the GNCC crossover, having notched seven-straight GNCC ATV titles before switching to bikes and then claiming that championship in 2003.

“If he goes out there to have fun, it will be good for him,” says Hawk, who rides for the Am-Pro Yamaha bike team. “If he expects to run in the top ten and prove a point, it will be tough, because he doesn’t have enough time on the machine to do that. I mean, if I were to race Indiana on an ATV, with all the experience I have, I’m not sure I could get a top ten, just having a few weeks to get ready.”

GNCC rules do not allow a pro bike racer to compete in Saturday’s ATV event, so Knight will skip Sunday’s bike race. That makes FMF Suzuki’s Paul Whibley the favorite after winning the previous GNCC in Ohio while Knight competed at Weston.

Whibley has three wins this season and sits second in the GNCC standings. His young Australian teammate Josh Strang, however, is hungry for his second win of the season.

“I refuse to finish off of the podium,” says Strang. “If it comes down to it on the last few laps, I’m going all in.”

Suzuki packs two other contenders in Charlie Mullins and Jimmy Jarrett, who were third and fourth, respectively, at the previous GNCC event in Ohio. Red Bull KTM’s Nathan Kanney is still hungry for his first win of the season, and the orange team will also send AMA National Enduro Champion Mike Lafferty to Indiana to replace Knight on Sunday.

Lafferty competed in the GNCC Series full time for years and has won GNCCs before. Hawk is a contender as well, and he will race a YZ450F four-stroke for the first time this season after spending years on two-stroke equipment.

Hawk’s young teammate Thad DuVall will race XC1 for the second time in his career. After clinching the XC2 Lites Championship for 250F class, DuVall made his XC1 debut on a 450 at the previous GNCC race and ran in second place before running into clutch troubles.

In the ATV class, Ballance clinched his record ninth-straight GNCC ATV Title at the previous event. He’ll race just for fun in Indiana. Expect competition from FRE KTM’s Adam McGill, who sits second in points.

There are three riders fighting for third in the final standings: Yoshimura Rockstar Suzuki’s Chris Borich, Team Excell Motorsports’ Bryan Cook, and GT Thunder Yamaha’s Brandon Sommers. Also look out for XC2 Champion Don Ockerman, who finished second in his XC1 pro debut in Ohio.

The ATV division packs a championship showdown in the 10 a.m. Saturday morning race as well, with women’s racers Traci Cecco and Angel Atwell tied in points coming into the last round.

The Ironman will host the final round of the first-ever GNCC UTV Series as well, with Yamaha Rhinos and Polaris RZRs competing.

The Klotz Ironman GNCC finale packs a variety of special events, including free ATV demo rides from Can-Am, Yamaha and KTM, and free demo rides of KTM bikes. Yamaha plans a GNCC Championship party for Ballance. A pair of monster trucks will put on a demo run on the track also.

Spectator passes are $15 for the full weekend, with pro pit access and pro autographs included at no additional charge. On both Saturday and Sunday, youth riders race at 8 a.m., amateur riders race at 10 a.m., and the pro and pro am classes compete at 1 p.m. For more information on the racing series, check out the official series web site at www.GNCCRacing.com.

Haavisto Earns Double Championship in NEATV Series

0

Press Release –

Kawasaki’s Joe Haavisto finished out a dream season at Jolly Roger Motosports Park in Lempster, N.H., earning championships in both the Pro-Am and Pro classes of the New England ATV (NEATV) Series.

Despite an injury at the end of August, Haavisto battled to a 3-1 finish to take the overall in the Pro class for the weekend.

Not 1 but 2 Championships

Haavisto set high goals at the beginning of the year, desiring to be champion of the two elite classes in the NEATV Series. He definitely accomplished those goals, clinching the Pro-Am championship one round early and the Pro championship after one moto at the final event.

“It feels great to accomplish the goals I had set at the beginning of the year,” said Haavisto. “With Kawasaki putting a lot of support not only into me personally, but the series too, I took it as my responsibility to make sure that Kawasaki was on the podium at every race. And I ended up with the two championships at the end of the season.”

A Good Day

Not only did Haavisto earn two championships, he ended the season with an overall victory in the Pro class going 3-1. He didn’t race the Pro-Am class since he clinched at the last round and his knee is still recovering.

“It was a great way to end the season,” said Haavisto. “I haven’t had any practice since I injured my knee at the ATV Open Invitational at Steel City over six weeks ago. I wanted to ride the Pro-Am class, but I didn’t want to irritate my knee anymore.”

Props to the KFX-450R

With the success he has had in 2008, Haavisto was sure to give some of the credit to his green machine.

“The KFX450R has been great all year,” said Haavisto. “I didn’t have any problems with the bike at all and never had a DNF. I felt really comfortable on it from day one and was able to work during the season to get it to handle perfectly. I’m really looking forward to riding it next season.”

A Growing Series

The NEATV Series continues to grow in entries and next year will continue to grow in competition. Haavisto plans on being ready to defend his titles.

“This series has grown tremendously since I first started racing it in 2000,” said Haavisto. “Next year I have the same goals to win both titles. I know it’s going to be tough with a few national riders coming into the series, but I am excited for the challenge and know that I will have to train and work harder.”

“The growing response to, and need for, the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative is indicative of the desire for enthusiasts and advocates to enjoy OHVs in a safe and sustainable manner,” said Mike Martinez, Yamaha’s general manager of ATV and Side-by-Side (SxS) Operations. “In light of changing national policy on OHV access, the community will have a continuing need for our GRANTs to directly fund projects that help maintain access to existing trails and responsibly create new opportunities for OHV use.”

Landon Hurst Podiums at Pismo

0

Press Release –

Landon Hurst piloted his Outlaw 450MXR to a second place Pro finish at the famous Pismo Beach Race, at Oceano Dunes, in Pismo Beach, Calif., on October 12.

Endurance riding in the sand, which gets rougher and rougher and more whooped-out during the race, puts both the rider and the machine through a work out during this two-hour event.

Hurst pulled the holeshot on his 2008 Outlaw 450MXR, and with a roost of sand, he was gone. “My Outlaw was so strong in the rough sections, the FOX suspension was dialed, and my B&B Motor pulled hard through the power-robbing sand,” said Hurst.

He continued his flawless ride until lap number four, which he had to pit for fuel. “I knew I had to stop for fuel and didn’t want to take the chance of running dry, it was tough to watch my lead evaporate while I was pitted.”

With fuel in the tank, Hurst jumped at the opportunity to gain the lead while the leader was at fuel stop. Hurst led until the last fuel stop where he swap spots with the leader and finished a strong second.

Hurst will tackle the Competitive Edge MX Park track, in Hesperia, Calif., for the ITP QuadCross, on October 19.

Ballance Breaks Own Record

Press Release –

Traci Cecco Leads Women’s Series Going into Season Finale

Yamaha Factory ATV Racer Bill Ballance secured his record-breaking ninth consecutive Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) ATV XC1 Pro championship aboard his Yamaha YFZ450 in St. Clairsville, Ohio, on Saturday afternoon, October 11.

In true championship style, Ballance locked in his series title by finishing first in Saturday’s race – his fourth win of the season.

Another Yamaha champion, Traci Cecco, kept herself on top of the women’s series with her sixth win of the season this past weekend.

Cecco, who has also won the past six women’s championship titles, leads the women’s division again this year by a point heading into the GNCC Ironman, the series finale schedule for October 25 in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Continuing the big news for Yamaha from this past weekend, Donnie Ockerman, the recently crowned 2008 GNCC XC2 Pro Am champion, advanced to the XC1 Pro class and finished second behind Ballance – an impressive feat in his first pro race.

The long cross-country course at Ohio’s Powerline Park was wide open and fast, with plenty of dusty fields and hill-climbs, and the occasional mud-hole to stymie the riders.

With the XC1 Pro championship his for the claiming, Ballance was on a mission, firing his YFZ450 quickly to the front, swapping the lead with Ockerman early in the almost two-hour race, and then checking out from the pack to win by 50 seconds over Ockerman, who strongly maintained second on another Yamaha YFZ450.

“Yamaha congratulates Bill for another historic win,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s ATV/SxS marketing manager. “His dominance proves how tough he is mentally and physically, and the way he wins – with poise and character – is truly something special. Yamaha is excited to support Bill in another record-breaking year, and we’re proud that he continues to rewrite the record books riding a YFZ450.”

The morning Women’s race proved even more suspenseful as Cecco fought not only for the race win, but also for the championship.

Aboard her own YFZ450, Cecco took the lead early and held it for all four laps, while also scoring the overall win ahead of all other ATV classes in the event. Cecco is now on track to win her seventh championship at the series’ final round.

“Traci is another example of a truly dominant competitor, and we are excited to see her head into the Ironman with a points series lead,” Nessl said. “Yamaha will be there in full force to cheer on Traci and the rest of the racing team.”
