Side by Side with the Kymco UXV 500

When Kymco brought the ATV media to South Carolina last February, we had our guesses at what we’d be looking at and, as expected, we weren’t disappointed.

First item on the agenda was the introduction of the not-so-top-secret UXV 500 side-by-side. We’ve been told, the trick with side-by-sides is to jam as much performance into the package without sacrificing utility functionality. The UXV nails it.

Its 498.5cc DOHC 4-stroke churns out an impressive 33 horsepower and features a CVT tranny with diff-lock and independent double A-arm suspension front and back.

When called upon, the box can haul a hefty 420-pound payload and the standard tilt bed makes unloading easy.

The UXV also features a standard equipment hitch that can pull a whopping 1212 pounds. Not too shabby. Cab seating for two people is decent and features a center console shifter and digital instrumentation. The seats are as comfy as any competitor’s are and 3-point safety harnesses keep both the driver and passenger in place.

There’s also a heavy-duty mesh safety guard to keep legs inside the vehicle. We’d actually like to see this mesh guard extend all the way from the shoulder to the foot wells to incorporate arm safety as well as legs. Frankly, as it is, this is a solid start and Kymco has gone further than almost every other OEM to ensure rider safety.

Independent rear suspension is a new concept for Kymco’s lineup and the engineers have done their homework. Parallel double A-arms front and rear allow the UXV to tackle rough trails easily and 12.2 inches of ground clearance will cover just about any trail obstacle without that annoying grinding sound.

Selectable 4×4 and a manual diff-locker make rocks and logs feel more like pebbles and twigs under the tires.

The UXV bridges the fine line between price and quality. The fact is, you can get a well-equipped UXV with a very large feature load at a very attractive price without compromising quality.

Side-x-Side Rumor Toast

This season’s hottest side by side rumor is officially over – finito. The much anticipated and potentially photographed (we’ve seen pics circulating the net) Can-Am SxS will not happen… yet.

Can-Am has been working hard denying the existence of a sport rider targeted UTV since last fall. They’ve denied it because way too many people claim to have seen it and claim it does exist.

Here’s what we think: This 2-passenger Can-Am does exist and will be in the market in the next 8-12 months.

We believe it will be powered by at least a 75 HP twin or triple cylinder engine and will offer more of everything the already wildly popular Polaris RZR delivers.

KTM ATV OMA Race Report: Coyote XC

Press Release –

KTM ATV regional support rider David Crane couldn’t be stopped at the classic Iowa OMA Round 4 venue on his 450 XC as he handled nasty weather and the competition for a commanding Pro class victory and overall.

Thirty minutes before the start, the skies opened up and a heavy downpour quickly turned dry and dusty conditions into slick mud.

“It started to rain on the line and the race quickly became one of survival,” Crane said. “It was pretty sticky, but the KTM ran great and it hooks up so well in muddy conditions.”

Crane had a decent start and worked his way through traffic and the rain during the first lap. But, by the beginning of the second lap, Crane pulled his 450 XC into the lead just as it stopped raining and never looked back

“I pulled into the lead and checked out from there,” Crane said. “The KTM gets traction better than anything I’ve ever been on.”

By the end of the seven-lap race, Crane had amassed nearly a seven-minute lead and his first career OMA overall victory. “I hope to get in the points lead and stretch it out from there,” Crane said. Currently, Crane sits in second place overall and trails the Pro class leader by just four points.

Now Crane is preparing for Round 8 of the GNCC series before he makes the trip to Michigan June 28 for Round 5 of the OMA series.

ATV OMA Pro Class Results:
1. David Crane – KTM
2. Rob Zimmerman
3. Shane Gaunt
4. Matt Lindle
5. Bryan Hulsey

Overall Points:
1. Rob Zimmerman – 83
2. David Crane – 79
3. Shane Gaunt – 67
4. Brandon Sommers – 60
5. Andy Lagzdins – 58

Wimmer Scores Overall Win at Unadilla MX

Press Release –

Team MSR / Suzuki / Yoshimura / Pro Taper’s Dustin Wimmer (#191) walked away with his fourth overall win at this weekend’s 7th round of the ITP Tires/Moose Racing AMA/ATVA National Motocross Championship at Unadilla MX in New Berlin, NY.

Wimmer went into the race with the fastest qualifying time on Saturday. He followed that up on Sunday when he parlayed a consistent 2-2 moto score for the overall win.

Sunday’s two motos offered varied challenges to the riders. Soaring high temperatures mixed with increasing humidity spawned heavy intermittent afternoon showers and a muddy track for the second moto.

Wimmer was pleased with his performance: “The Suzuki QuadRacer R450 was really hooked up. Today was a perfect example of how well my Suzuki performs in all conditions – it’s a definite advantage.”

“Dustin ran a smart race today,” Team Manager Kory Ellis explained. “He had good starts in both motos, and ran two consistent races. This is how you need to ride in order to win a championship.”

Wimmer now holds a 61 point lead in the series overall while Suzuki continues its dominance of the Manufacturers’ Cup.

Wimmer was also the winner of the second round of the ITP Tires Grand Slam Presented by QUAD Magazine championship series – a four round series within a series.

In the amateur divisions Suzuki riders had a great day too. Cody Gibson won in the Pro-Am Unlimited Class; Michael Rakes took the Open B Class; Chase Cunningham captured the 4-Stroke A and the Junior 25+ classes; Jerry Huckabey won the 40+ division; Chad Lohr got first in the Vet 30+A.

Next stop for the team is at Muddy Creek MX on June 20-22nd.

ITP 25×14 LOW-PROFILE TERRACROSS R/T XD

Press Release –

Delivering yet another innovative industry first, ITP has just released two new TerraCross R/T sizes designed for even better sport-oriented performance.

Now available in a 25x9R-14 front and a 25x10R-14 rear, this new sizing results in an extra-low profile with less sidewall flex for precise steering and exceptional control.

Along with significantly better handling, these new sizes are lighter than current 26-inch options, they reduce horsepower losses and also allow the operator to retain OEM gearing characteristics. This is what the high-performance crowd has been waiting for!

Of course these new TerraCross R/T tires feature ITP’s new XD (Extreme Duty) construction and extended-life rubber compound for a whole new level of durability and reliability.

Ideal for both ATV and UTV applications, the TerraCross R/T XD uses a unique interlocking tread pattern and wide footprint to offer exceptional traction and flotation in mud, snow and sand.

This tire’s wrap-around shoulder lug design provides excellent sidewall protection and grip when navigating trails with large ruts or rocks as well. And despite its super-tough 6-ply construction, the TerraCross R/T XD is surprisingly light in weight.

The ITP TerraCross R/T XD is available in numerous 12- and 14-inch sizes, and also come in a variety of pre-mounted tire/wheel kits using ITP’s stylish and rugged SS Alloy one-piece aluminum wheels.

Since 1982, ITP has grown into the world’s #1 ATV aftermarket tire and wheel source, and continues to provide a complete line of innovative tires and wheel for virtually all ATVs and UTVs.

New England ATV Motocross Round 3

Press Release –

Sunny skies and warm temperatures greeted racers at round 3 of the NEATV-MX Series where Canadian factory Yamaha racer Jasmin Plante dominated the Open Pro class with Kawasaki’s Joe Haavisto over coming bad luck to claim the Pro-Am win, and Swedish team Polaris Outlaw racer Petra Lindeborg made her American racing debut in the Women’s class.

Jolly Roger Motorsports Park once again played host to this round of the series that some new faces amongst racers, one of those being Petra Lindeborg from Sweden.

Petra will be in the states for the entire summer racing for team Polaris via Southside Motors and will be joined by 3-4 of her male teammates over the next couple of weeks.

All though the #109 Polaris of Lindeborg only placed in 6th overall, it is certainly a fantastic opportunity for the Swedish racer to take part in events in the U.S.

Amy Thompson took the win in the Women’s class, which was her first win of the season. Paige Whipple, who has dominated the class for most of the year, took second, while Casandra Depizzol claimed the third spot overall.

In the Open Pro class, Jasmin Plante, who was absent from the AMA ATV Motocross Nationals this weekend, grabbed the Holeshot in Moto one followed by Michael Pilotte, and Vincent Mofford. Joe Haavisto had a mid pack start and soon worked his way up to second place.

Plante and Haavisto were engaged in a heated battle for first for almost the entire moto until a rock got stuck in Haavisto’s front brakes in the last lap, which sent him flying over the handlebars.

Haavisto’s crash allowed Plante to complete the last lap unchallenged and take the win. All though Haavisto was uninjured, he still took a DNF due to the damage done to his quad by the rock. “I got a bad start and then got that rock stuck,” stated a disappointed Haavisto. Vincent crossed the finish line a distant second while Danny Lewis claimed third.

In Moto number two, it was Plante who once again grabbed the Holeshot with Haavisto right on his grab bar. The pair battled back and forth passing each other several times during the course of the moto, which had the crowd cheering wildly. Unfortunately, Haavisto once again suffered mechanical issues and fell back to 8th place allowing Plante to take the win.

As the rest of the racers crossed the finish line it was Thomas Mofford who would take 2nd, and his 5-2 finish allowed him to claim 2nd overall, while Danny Lewis’s 3-4 finish earned him 3rd overall. Vincent Mofford claimed 4th overall and Justin Hoffler’s 7-3 finish allowed him to round out the top five.

In the Pro-Am class the competition was once again fierce between Joe Haavisto and Jasmin Plante. Plante grabbed once again grabbed the Holeshot in Moto one with Haavisto right on his grab bar. The pair battled, but Plante successfully held off Haavisto taking first with Haavisto in second. Michael Pilotte ran strong finishing in third.

In Pro-Am Moto two, it was Haavisto that grabbed the Holeshot over Plante and the two once again began to battle, but this time it was Haavisto who was the victor crossing the finish line in first, which would get him the overall Pro-Am win for the day while Plante had to settle for second. Justin Hoffler ran a good race with a 5-3 finish which earned him 3rd overall, while Thomas Mofford and Michael Pilotte claimed 4th and 5th overall.

The next round of the NEATV will once again be held at Jolly Roger Motorsports Park in New Hampshire on June 22nd where more of the Swedish Polaris team is expected to make their U.S. racing debuts.

Rath Puts Sportsman on the Podium

Press Release –

The 2008 season is quickly becoming a memorable year as the Polaris/Rath relationship is off and racing. Once again, the Polaris/Rath/Dunlop team made a little history.

The anticipation has been growing since the announcement Daryl Rath would not only be piloting a Polaris Sportsman in the rapidly-growing Utility Class at the GNCC, but fielding a Cross Country Team as well.

It was an impressive first showing as Rath raced his way to a third place finish in the Utility Open Class and a 56th overall finish out of more than 300 riders in 16 different classes.

Rath stated, “I am extremely happy with our performance today. It was our first showing on this machine in a class that has had seasoned contenders in it all year. We met our goal of finishing in the top three, and with the first race unknowns out of the way, I am looking forward to making some changes and small improvements to prove the Sportsman is a contender.” He added, “Dirty Dawg stepped in and did some mild engine modifications along with some clutching. I am very excited to see what they have for us by next round.”

Rath lined up alongside his teammate Frank Batista (No. 13) for the start. After a chaotic first woods section, he made his way around a bottleneck and proceeded to run a flawless race.

The track had some very tight sections and the skills of the veteran GNCC racers showed as they maneuvered through the trees. Batista running his first GNCC event finished a respectable eighth place.

The team was excited about the success at their first GNCC event and look forward to Round 8.
