McGill Takes NC for Second Straight GNCC Victory

Press Release –

KTM’s Adam McGill is on fire in the Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series. The West Union, West Vriginia-based rider took his KTM 525XC to his second-straight overall win with another dominant run, leading a muddy FMF Steele Creek GNCC from wire-to-wire.

Yamaha’s Bill Ballance took second with Team National Guard’s William Yokley third on a Honda. Safari Motorsports’ Matt Smiley and GT Thunder Yamaha’s Brandon Sommers rounded out the top five overall.

Don Ockerman took the XC2 class on his GT Thunder Yamaha.

McGill holds a commanding points lead by winning two of the first three races of the season.

In the morning race, run under difficult, rainy conditions, Yamaha’s Traci Cecco captured the overall and the Women’s class win once again on her factory YFZ450.

U2 class rider Michael Benson scored the top overall utility finish with second overall on his Kawasaki KFX700. Michael Swift took a Can-Am Outlander 800 to the 4×4 Limited win and third overall.

The racing continues with dirt bike action on Sunday, March 30, with youth racing at 8 a.m., a morning race at 10 a.m. and pros racing for three hours at 1 p.m.

Racing takes place at Steele Creek Campground in Morganton, N.C. The campground is located on NC 181 just outside downtown Morganton.

McGill Makes it Two in a Row

Press Release –

Factory FRE/KTM rider Adam McGill earned his second win in a row at the third round of the ATV GNCC Series.

After a dominating win at the Georgia round McGill repeated the result this weekend to prove it wasn’t a fluke and he is indeed a title contender for this season’s championship.

Just like he did at round 2, McGill pulled an amazing holeshot and got out front fast. By the end of the first lap he had already put 20 seconds on the second place rider, Bill Balance. McGill’s teammate, Taylor Kiser started a bit farther back around 10th place and had moved into 7th by the end of lap one.

After the first lap Kiser had caught up with Brandon Sommers and Chris Borich and the three riders battled throughout the remainder of the two hour race.

“I caught up to the front pack rather quickly but every time I tried to pass I would get stuck behind lappers in a bottleneck and lose time. It was a one-lined course and since I didn’t have the start I needed I struggled to break through,” commented Kiser.

Meanwhile, McGill was still pulling out front stretching his lead to over a minute. McGill would go on to win after leading the race start to finish in a near flawless ride out front.

Kiser finished 7th for the day earning enough points to keep him in the title chase. After three rounds McGill and Kiser now sit one and two in the series points.

“I am so happy to be on top of the podium for the second week straight,” replied McGill after the race. “This is where I’ve known I could be for a long time, but I couldn’t have made it happen if it wasn’t for the help of my team and a great bike. My KTM is running perfect and almost makes my job seem easy.”

A GOOD RAMP JUST GOT BETTER

The makers of SUPER-CLAMP have partnered with Kimpex – one of Canada’s largest distributors – to make its unique SUPER-GLIDES system available on Kimpex brand tri-fold aluminum ramps.

Now loading and unloading snowmobiles, ATVs, snow blowers and power equipment from your truck bed or trailer is safer and easier than ever before.

The ramp kit comes complete with four 8.5-inch wide x 30-inch glides plus all the necessary hardware and the glides install easily with just a rivet gun.

SUPER-GLIDES offer considerable traction for loading and unloading equipment and provide sure-footedness while walking up and down the ramp.

As mud and snow can make smooth metal surfaces very slippery, the high-traction surface of the glide delivers better grip for your boot with each step. It also grips firmly to tires and tracks to make driving up and down the ramp quicker with less risk of sliding.

The light-weight, 50 inch-wide aluminum ramp has a capacity of 1,500 pounds and folds down to a mere 16 inches for easy storage in the back of your truck and won’t take up valuable space in your garage.

The contract has Eichner racing the Polaris Outlaw in WORCS and other selected races through the 2009 race season.

Eric Nault, Polaris ATV race manager, expressed how pleased Polaris is to be continuing their relationship with Eichner.

“Doug brought us our first professional level win last year, and delivered a total of eight professional victories during the 2007 season. He continues to be at the front of the pack just about every weekend on Polaris Outlaws.”

Eichner, who finished second overall in the 2007 WORCS series, has been highly successful in demonstrating the racing ability of the Outlaw models.

He started the 2007 season off successfully with the Outlaw 525 IRS and continued his winning ways aboard the Outlaw 525 S which was introduced mid-season.

I especially enjoy knowing there is a legion of fans at Polaris who are committed to developing the best products on the market. I am honored to be a part of Polaris history and I am looking forward to giving Polaris and the Outlaw models my best effort throughout this season and beyond.”

Why No 8 Inch-Wide Tires???

Dear Motorhead,

Where have all the 8`s gone? Owning a Polaris Sportsman 800 has been about the most fun I`ve ever had when it comes to the out doors, but there are a couple of draw back to the 800 that make them a little bit of a pain in the you know what.

The front bearings are run too loose (torqued to factory specs of course) and spacers are not even to be used on the front of these ATV`s because of added pressure on the bearings which would cause premature bearing falure(according to Polaris).

Most of the ATV tire companies have stopped production of 8 wide tires and gone to the 9 wide tires (which will rub the the steering knuckles) so which way do you go to replace the stock 26x8x12`s on the 800`s?

Thanks,

Rod

Thanks for your email!

Anytime you increase offset with bigger wheels and/or tires you run the risk of failing bearings and spindles not to mention the extra stress you put on a-arm bushings and tie rods.

The front end of your Polaris (and all ATV’a) are designed to accept a certain offset – and that’s it.

The mathematical stress loads which impacts will produce through all related components as a result of increased off-set are staggering.

We see huge increases in wear on all ATV’s – both front and rear suspension and drive components – from the use of larger tires/wheels with increased offset required to accommodate their use. However, if you want to see wear increase in steering components add a set of tracks! Wow! After a seasons use on any sport/ute big bore the ATV feels like its ten years old.

Clearly, the aftermarket is making equipment which exceeds the design limitations of most ATV’s in the market.

I know that’s not much of an answer but it’s what we see here – regularly.

New KTM Not Quite Right

Dear Motorhead,

I have a new KTM 525xc and live in Calgary and do trail riding in the surrounding area.

I’m still in the brake-in procedure, but I feel like there should be more low end and quicker throttle response, I have to really ease on the throttle to get acceleration, fast acceleration causes almost like a choking condition, not enough air/fuel.

I’m running premium fuel as recommended. Does this sound like a jet problem due to elevation or something else?

Thanks for the help.

Russ

Thanks for your email!

I would return the unit to the dealer pronto and not fiddle with anything.

This is not the way your five-two-five should run. Get it back – now!

Rhino vs. RZR

Dear Motorhead,

I’m considering a side X side (probably a new Rhino or RZR) and I will need to install hand controls because I’m a quadriplegic.

What’s the scoop on using hand controls on the major side x side players?

Thanks,

Russ

Thanks for your email!

You are comparing two pretty different SXS models. The RZR is an outperforming, single minded, rip-roaring SXS that’s for fun “riding” predominantly. The Rhino is less sporty but has an added measure of utility.

If you’re looking for utility I would also suggest you consider a number of other SXS models in your selection. The RZR – right now – is uncomparable.

I have no knowledge or info on SXS hand controls at this time.

Which 2-Upper?

Dear Motorhead,

I am thinking of buying 800 2-up for wife & me to use in deep powder with Mattracks atv tracks.

we only want a dependable comfortable ATV to use year round in the 1.8 million acres of Rio Grande forest in our backyard here in Del Norte Colorado, but can’t choose between BRP and Polaris.

Scott

Thanks for your email!

Your question is a tough one and I truly cannot answer it definitively as the two ATV’s you are comparing are among our most favorite two-up models.

However, I can help you with this – you should make sure beyond the ATV you choose that you have chosen the best dealer. This will make a huge difference as time goes on.

Honestly, you cannot go wrong with the OL 800 Max or the Polaris Touring 800. They are both powerful, comfortable and incredibly capable two-up ATV’s that will work great with a Mattracks track conversion kit.

Keep in mind, if you’re running deep snow or heavily loaded these ATV’s can generate a lot of CVT heat.

The best way to ensure you don’t hurt the CVT or belt is to use low range under heavy load, slow speed and deep snow conditions.
