Suzuki ATVs Popular Sight at Dealer Expo

0

Press Release –

The Dealer Expo in Indianapolis is a showcase for every major motorcycle/ATV aftermarket manufacturer in the world, and 2008 was no exception.

But it’s not just an aftermarket show, thanks in large part to efforts by American Suzuki, which annually has a prominent display of accessories as well as motorcycles and ATVs in the main showroom.

And the American Suzuki booth was not the only place on the convention floor where a show-goer could find Suzuki ATVs. They were the choice of a number of aftermarket manufacturers to best show off their own products.

Not to be missed was the Suzuki QuadRacer R450 in the Douglas Wheel exhibit. Appropriately named Spyder Quad, the quad was literally crawling with live tarantulas. Quinn Michael of Outta Control Racing paid meticulous attention to every detail of this incredible custom quad. Bright orange body paint was decorated with skulls, spiders and web designs.

Live spiders could be found exploring the inside of the headlights and in a clear plexi-glass cage that replaced the battery box when the customizer installed a kickstarter.

Spider-themed bumpers, nerf and grab bars were supplied by Tarantula Performance Racing not surprisingly. They also made intricate laser cut spiders and webbing to round out the theme.

The balance of the aftermarket products came from Team Suzuki sponsors: Yoshimura, Maxxis, Douglas Wheel, Fox Shocks, Galfer, VP Fuel and Hinson Clutch.

Another manufacturer who chose the Suzuki QuadRacer to help show off its line of products was Jardine Performance Products. In honor of its “Golden Anniversary”, Jardine chose a black Limited Edition QuadRacer R450 and gold plated all of its products on the quad.

The result was so striking that, according to President Rick May, the dealers all want Jardine to sell 24k versions of current products. The company’s 50th Anniversary products for the LT-R450 are the aluminum front bumper, nerfs and a full system exhaust.

Ogio chose the Suzuki KingQuad 750AXI to show off its new front and rear rack bags. Chosen as one of Dealer Expo’s Top 10 products, this was a well-visited display.

With water bottle holders, multiple “D” rings for additional, map compartments and dividers, these bags are a perfect complement to any of the Suzuki line of utility quads.

The 2008 Dealer Expo was a great success for Suzuki. Motorcycle/ATV Division Communications Manager was pleased with the turnout: “Anyone who wants to see the latest products in the motorcycle and ATV industry absolutely must attend the Dealer Expo in Indianapolis. And to have so many Suzuki ATVs used as display vehicles for these awesome parts and accessories is a strong sign of the demand for Suzuki’s vehicles.”

BEST IN CLASS AWARDS: Best Trail Sport ATV

0

WINNER: Polaris Outlaw 525 IRS

We were among the first in the ATV press to identify the Outlaw with IRS as a significant ATV.

We stand firm on this assertion again in MY 08. If you need to ride a Pure Sport and want to not just endure but actually enjoy the ride there’s simply nothing currently available (we haven’t ridden the just announced Honda 700XX) even close to the 525 Outlaw with IRS.

Able to clear 11.5 inch obstacles and comfortable in deeply rutted two-tracks at insane speeds the amazing IRS Outlaw would be great if all it had was a weed whacker engine for motivation.

Of course, the Outlaw uses something significantly more potent than a string trimmer for movement. The most revered, most respected piece of off-road 4-stroke muscle is located right between your knees on the Outlaw.

If you haven’t squeezed the trigger on a 525 KTM in an IRS chassis you simply haven’t experienced the best in this class.

RUNNERS-UP: Yamaha Raptor 700 EFI, Can-Am Renegade 800

Yamaha has refined the Raptor into what is likely the highest form of this species – a trail worthy Big Bore Pure Sport.

The original 660 Rap was a fave around here and the arrival of the 700 EFI cemented this platform in our hearts.

Impeccable finish quality, anvil-like reliability, suspension calibration and seamless, imposing thrust make this ride impossible to overlook. Here’s what we’re hoping for – a 700 Raptor with IRS.

If we hadn’t produced our “incomparable comparison” earlier this year we wouldn’t be expounding the validity of the Can-Am Renegade 800 in this rather loosely defined category.

Able to run with the others in this segment but fully qualified to perform Sport Ute workaholic activity like towing a trailer or plowing snow, Pure Sport definitions are bent by the Renegade 800.

This Can-Am trades a smidge of sportiness for utility and in doing so becomes one tough-to-overlook competitor in this segment.

BEST IN CLASS AWARDS: Best Hardcore Sport

WINNER: Can-Am DS450

While the Pure Sport market is being flooded with top notch racing ATVs, when it comes to innovation and radical design, the Can-Am DS450 stands head and shoulders above its competitors.

Its revolutionary ALTEC aluminum frame (no welds), beautifully cast substructure and rifle drilled hollow axle bring a whole new meaning to strong. Likewise, its execution of reduced unsprung weight gives riders a tangible advantage over the competition.

Powered by a fresh Rotax 449cc mill, in stock form this track rocket is what its competitors pine to be when modified.

The available X package brings the term “race ready” to a whole new level putting high quality race refinements in buyers’ hands, straight out of the crate. In a class where technology and innovation are paramount, the DS stands alone.

RUNNERS-UP: KTM 450XC, Suzuki QuadRacer R450

KTM has made serious headway with its all-new KTM 450. Utilizing all the power and performance KTM motors are known for, this race bred European is no exception.

Ohlins shocks not only look great but damp with precision. KTM is totally focused on weight reduction and building strength into its design – two elements key to winning races.

In the hands of a racer or hardcore enthusiast the Suzuki QuadRacer 450 is a formidable weapon of war.

With multiple updates for 2008, this ATV is a “corked” up factory racer with potential waiting to be unleashed.

The fact that a $30 “Cherry Bomb” from Yoshimura will net an extra eight horsepower gives potential buyers some serious food for thought.

Pastrana To Compete in GNCC Opener in Florida

0

Press Release –

ESPN X Games superstar, AMA National Motocross Champion and rally car ace Travis Pastrana will make his return to the Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series next month, competing in the opening round of the 2008 tour, the Triton GNCC in Melbourne, Fla., on Tuesday, March 4.

Pastrana, one of the most recognizable extreme sports athletes on the planet, has a target set on friend and rival David Knight, the defending GNCC Champion. Pastrana and Knight will race in the XC1 pro motorcycle class.

“I think I was robbed on my other GNCC attempt,” laughed Pastrana, who competed in the Florida GNCC in 2006, but crashed in the first turn and damaged his bike’s radiator. “I am not even half as strong as David Knight in technical terrain, but I grew up spending my winters in the woods of Croom in Florida, and I feel like I can hang with anyone in fast sand whoops through trees.

“The opening round is probably the only place on the face of the earth other than on a motocross track that I have a shot in the dark against the behemoth ballerina most call the Knighter…or any of the other top woods riders, really,” added Pastrana. “I’m trying to talk Knight into letting everyone go and starting with me in last so we will avoid any possible first turn excuses. That should also give everyone else a better chance against him. That’s my plan!”

Pastrana will race on a full factory Suzuki RM250 two-stroke, courtesy of the FMF Suzuki GNCC team. Now fully focused on a rally car racing career, Pastrana hasn’t done much motorcycle riding lately, but he will pound out laps on Davi Millsaps’ Daytona Supercross practice track to prepare for the event.

“I need to get going,” says Pastrana. “I have been eating ice cream and driving cars almost every day; mostly in the snow!”

The 2008 Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series kicks off with the Triton GNCC in Melbourne, Fla. on March 1-4. ATVs will practice on Saturday, March 1, and race Sunday, March 2.

Bikes will practice on Monday, March 3, and race Tuesday, March 4. Pastrana and the top GNCC bike pros will race for three hours starting at 1 p.m.

To get to the track, take I-95 to the Melbourne Exit at State Route 192. Go west on Route 192 (12 mi) to Kempfer Road. Turn left on Kempfer Road and travel two miles to the event.

“Can-Am really helped take the GNCC Series up a notch last year,” says GNCC Trail Boss Jeff Russell. “They supported us on the track and off, providing great machines and equipment for our staff and building a variety of fun promotions for our fans, like demo rides. They also help fund our GNCC TV program on Versus. We’re really thankful for everything they have done to aid in the Series’ growth.”

“GNCC racing brings not only racers together in the spirit of competition, but friends and families together as well,” says Bernard Guy, ATV marketing director at BRP. “We are in the business of fun, and see the GNCC Series as a way to give back to those who embrace the lifestyle of off-road recreation.”

Best Sport Utility ATV: Mid-Range

0

WINNER: Suzuki 450 KingQuad

We changed this category this year and widened the choices to ATVs with engines displacing from 350 to 500ccs.

This opened the door to a much broader list of 4-wheelers and made the competition for a class winner much tougher.

Price is now a huge factor and, naturally, getting the most for the least amount of cash is a big consideration with consumers right now.

Suzuki’s King Quad 450 owns this class for delivering the best ride, best handling and most features for a killer price.

This is an incredible ATV for the money and features off-roading staples like fully independent suspension, liquid cooling and electronic fuel injection.

Then there’s selectable 4WD, mechanical engine braking, a multi-plate rear disc brake system, diff-lock and an excellent CVT transmission.

Better than any of the above is the lightweight, precise handling the 450 delivers and its 4WD system’s ability to rule in the bogs.

Furthermore, it’s a dead ringer for its big brother, the new 750 KingQuad, so you can impress your friends while jiggling the extra coins left in your pocket.

If this wheeler wasn’t so much fun to ride (we actually prefer it to the old 700 KingQuad), it wouldn’t have made this list.

As it stands, this is the benchmark right now for engineering, fair price and delivery of satisfaction in this category.

RUNNERS-UP: Honda TRX 420, Polaris Sportsman 400

Once again, price entered the equation here. Honda’s TRX 420 4×4 is an amazing product and delivers key elements like EFI and liquid cooling in a price range where the competition replies with carbs and air cooling.

Sure, it’s missing IRS and still uses a semi-auto 5-speed but long engine life and strong resale will carry the day.

The Sportsman 400 is all-new this year and offers last years full sized Sportsman 450’s powerplant. In this chassis it turns out to be a rocket.

This slightly downsized IRS suspended Sport-Ute is loaded with goodies like true 4×4, selectable 4WD, diff-lock and liquid cooling. Pricing is excellent and makes this one worth a long look.

0

Press Release –

Polaris celebrates and congratulates, ATV Racing Legend, Doug Eichner on his Pro win at the two-hour Saboba Grand Prix, Sunday February 9-10, on the Outlaw 525 S.

The Saboba Indians promote this annual event which had a very large showing for all divisions including 30 ATVs in the Pro line-up.

“I really enjoy Grand Prix style competition as it provides unique challenges for both riders and machines,” said Eichner. “This is my second time racing at Saboba and my second win. With the level of competition this year and competing with the new and impressive Outlaw 525 S, it made the victory even more satisfying. I want to express my deepest appreciation to my mechanic, Scott Butler, and the crew from Lone Star Racing and Yoshimura who provided the essential support that helped to capture this notable win for our team.”

Eichner took the holeshot and about a five-bike lead into the first turn; winning the race with a commanding lead.

His Yoshimura-built, KTM engine ran great, with both bottom and top end pulling hard over the rough course. The FOX Racing Shox suspension handled the rough terrain with ease and supported the demanding drive of Eichner.
