New KTM Not Quite Right

Dear Motorhead,

I have a new KTM 525xc and live in Calgary and do trail riding in the surrounding area.

I’m still in the brake-in procedure, but I feel like there should be more low end and quicker throttle response, I have to really ease on the throttle to get acceleration, fast acceleration causes almost like a choking condition, not enough air/fuel.

I’m running premium fuel as recommended. Does this sound like a jet problem due to elevation or something else?

Thanks for the help.

Russ

Thanks for your email!

I would return the unit to the dealer pronto and not fiddle with anything.

This is not the way your five-two-five should run. Get it back – now!

Rhino vs. RZR

Dear Motorhead,

I’m considering a side X side (probably a new Rhino or RZR) and I will need to install hand controls because I’m a quadriplegic.

What’s the scoop on using hand controls on the major side x side players?

Thanks,

Russ

Thanks for your email!

You are comparing two pretty different SXS models. The RZR is an outperforming, single minded, rip-roaring SXS that’s for fun “riding” predominantly. The Rhino is less sporty but has an added measure of utility.

If you’re looking for utility I would also suggest you consider a number of other SXS models in your selection. The RZR – right now – is uncomparable.

I have no knowledge or info on SXS hand controls at this time.

Which 2-Upper?

Dear Motorhead,

I am thinking of buying 800 2-up for wife & me to use in deep powder with Mattracks atv tracks.

we only want a dependable comfortable ATV to use year round in the 1.8 million acres of Rio Grande forest in our backyard here in Del Norte Colorado, but can’t choose between BRP and Polaris.

Scott

Thanks for your email!

Your question is a tough one and I truly cannot answer it definitively as the two ATV’s you are comparing are among our most favorite two-up models.

However, I can help you with this – you should make sure beyond the ATV you choose that you have chosen the best dealer. This will make a huge difference as time goes on.

Honestly, you cannot go wrong with the OL 800 Max or the Polaris Touring 800. They are both powerful, comfortable and incredibly capable two-up ATV’s that will work great with a Mattracks track conversion kit.

Keep in mind, if you’re running deep snow or heavily loaded these ATV’s can generate a lot of CVT heat.

The best way to ensure you don’t hurt the CVT or belt is to use low range under heavy load, slow speed and deep snow conditions.

MUD, SNOW AND RAIN HAMMER GNCC ROUND TWO

Press Release –

As snow buried Ohio, tornadoes hit Florida and freezing rain coated the Northeast, the General GNCC near Washington, Ga., faced its share of weather issues.

Rain, cold and snow were the story for Saturday’s races and the Can-Am riders had their work cut out for them.

“In GNCC racing, you are always going to face these kinds of races,” said Del Bohlman, Product, Media Relation and Racing Manager for Can-Am ATVs. “Preparing for the race course conditions of these muddy and miserable races are a test for the crew and racers. But this is why we race Can-Am ATVs; they are capable of amazing feats.”

At the end of the gruelling race, Can-Am X-Team member Bryan Buckhannon aboard a Can Am™ Outlander™ 800 ATV was the first of the 4×4 Open riders to cross the finish line and was on the morning podium with third overall out of nearly 250 riders.

He wasn’t the only Can Am rider to win his class, Team Warnert Racing/Can-Am’s Cliff Beasley took the win on his Outlander 500 in the 4×4 Lites class.

He was closely followed by Team Looney Tuned Exhaust/Can-Am’s Jerime Dudding on his Outlander 500 ATV. BRP Can-Am also had success in the 4×4 Limited class as X-Team racer Jamie Bougher was the first to finish in the class.

All the racers are hoping the Steele Creek GNCC, held near Morganton, N.C., on March 29, will have much better weather and track conditions.

Can-Am DS 450 Rider John Natalie Takes Fourth

Press Release –

Team Warnert/Can-Am racer John Natalie rode to a hard-fought fourth-place overall and took the second-moto holeshot at the ITP/Moose Racing AMA/ATVA ATV Championship Series at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, Calif.

The weekend marked his much-anticipated debut on the Can-Am™ DS 450™ ATV, with Natalie riding to the fifth-fastest lap time in qualifying practice earlier during the race weekend. His lap time was just behind Epic Racing/Can-Am’s Greg Gee, also on a DS 450.

“To have everyone qualify and take a fourth overall made for a great national motocross debut for the Can-Am DS 450,” said Del Bohlman, Product, Media Relation and Racing Manager for Can-Am ATVs. “We are improving each week and this just gives us more motivation to work even harder for the next race.”

The first race of the season saw all five DS 450 riders qualify to the weekend’s two Pro 450 motos and saw two DS 450 ATVs finish in the top 10. Team Epic Racing/Can-Am’s Sage Baker put on an impressive ride on his DS 450 for ninth overall.

John Natalie –

“I’m really excited about this season. Can-Am/Warnert really came through. I think this was probably the best debut I could ever have. There were only a few jumps on this track, so I can’t wait to go to Alabama for the next round and really put the suspension to the test.”

Sage Baker –

“The bike was running good. We made a couple of small changes for the second moto and it was even better. It is really nice to have the support this year so I can concentrate on racing instead of everything else.”

The next round of the ITP/Moose Racing AMA/ATVA ATV Championship Series is March 29-30 at Mill City Raceway near Pell City, Ala.

FREDERICKS TAKES THIRD AT ITP QUADCROSS OPENER

Press Release –

Round one of the ITP Quadcross series was held in conjunction with the AMA/ATVA National at Glen Helen Raceway near San Bernardino, Calif., this past weekend.

Josh Fredericks rode the DS 450™ ATV to its Pro-class debut, finishing third.

BRP’s latest was also the ATV of choice for several other DS 450 racers in the amateur classes.

“It was a great weekend of racing for BRP Can-Am,” said Del Bohlman, Product, Media Relation and Racing Manager for Can-Am ATVs. “Josh Fredericks has quickly begun to distinguish himself in the ATV racing world and we are extremely pleased with his performance and the rest of the Team Motoworks racers and crew.”

DS 450 development rider and current WORCS Pro-class champion, Josh Fredericks, rode to third place in the Pro 450 class.

The Team Motoworks/Can-Am racer gained 40 points for the nine-round championship battle.

In the amateur classes, Team Motoworks/Can-Am racer Dillon Zimmerman put on a great second-moto and took the win in the Four-Stroke Expert class.

With Zimmerman’s first race result, he finished second overall for the weekend.

The entire Motoworks/Can-Am team will make the trip to Arizona Cycle Park, near Buckeye, Ariz., on April 13.

Maxxis Sweeps Top 8 at Maxxis General

Press Release –

With surging winner Adam McGill leading the pack, Maxxis swept the top eight spots and took nine of the top ten at the GNCC Maxxis General.

McGill crossed the finish line six minutes ahead of the next racer, fellow Maxxis and Team FRE KTM rider Taylor Kiser. The race was held March 8 in Washington, Georgia.

“It feels great,” McGill told gnccracing.com. “This is the machine I wanted to race the first time I saw it. I was a little worried on the last lap, because I’ve been there before and it hasn’t worked out.”

Pro rookie Brandon Sommers took third place, with Bryan Cook in fourth and Ryan Lane in fifth.

Matt Smiley, Jarrod McClure and Johnny Gallagher nailed the sixth, seventh and eighth place spots, and David Crane rounded out the top ten for Maxxis.

Both defending champ Bill Ballance and Chris Borich, winner of the opening GNCC round a week earlier, were unable to finish due to mechanical problems.

Maxxis’ winning streak also extended to the morning race with an overall victory for Traci Cecco.

Maxxis congratulates Adam McGill and Traci Cecco and thanks all of its sponsored riders for their fine performances.

BEST IN CLASS AWARDS: Best Value ATV

0

WINNER: Polaris Sportsman 500 HO

Value is defined by more than just price. Value isn’t value unless you’re getting more than you’d normally expect for your money.

Nothing compares to the Sportsman 500 HO for bang-for-the-bucks value. It accomplishes this with an incredible feature list and a reputation for durability that reaches back a decade.

Certainly the pricier, upscale EFI equipped version of this Sportsman is appealing but so is the extra G-note or more you’ll have left in your pocket by choosing the carbureted 500 HO.

Get a load of the stuff Polaris throws in with the 500HO: CVT transmission, low range, independent rear suspension, diff-lock, selectable 4×4 and disc brakes all round.

The value list is topped off with a proven, impressive performing, liquid cooled engine and what we feel is still the best all-round performing suspension in the business. Composite racks feature surplus stowage, the gauge package is comprehensive and this is one of the most comfortable ATVs you’ll ever ride.

We can’t think of anything else in the business that matches what you get here for a price that’s a full category lower. Value? You bet.

RUNNERS-UP: Yamaha Grizzly 400 4×4, Arctic Cat 366 4×4

The Grizzly 400 IRS 4×4 edges out its 20cc larger sibling, the 450, for value because it’s a great performing, great riding ATV minus very few features for a very affordable price.

Actually, the only glaring item missing is a locking differential and, frankly, we defy you to tell the difference in performance between this engine and the 450.

Arctic Cat has slipped a very competitive mid-range ATV into its model selection and it comes with everything you’d want in a 4×4. There’s selectable 4WD, IRS, liquid cooling, CVT transmission and a long list of throw-ins like hydraulic disc brakes and engineered-in lightness.

It’s a surprisingly strong performer and Cat has been able to keep its price in the bargain range. Great value!

BEST IN CLASS AWARDS: Best UTV

0

WINNER: Arctic Cat Prowler XTX 700 H1 LE

Arctic Cat’s Prowler gets the nod again this year as a result of delivering exactly what the market (and we) wanted. The Prowler platform caught us off guard a year ago with its bigger-than-Rhino dimensions and sporty DNA.

It’s big enough to effortlessly perform work duties while still delivering the taut handling and great responses of a Sport UTV.

Last year our only complaint was we felt more juice was needed and it’s been delivered for 2008 with an increase from 650 to 700 ccs. The power injection (literally) comes from Arctic Cat’s St Cloud, Minnesota-built 695cc fuel injected, twin cam single.

Extra thrust and more precise throttle response makes this chassis more fun to powerslide and actually improves off-road handling. New XTX amenities include custom wheels and slick painted bodywork. This kind of eye candy, blended with big-time performance, takes the Prowler to a new level in the SxS biz.

RUNNERS-UP: Polaris Ranger RZR, Yamaha Rhino

The Polaris Ranger RZR is a breath of fresh air in the Side by Side category and may just be a predictor of things to come in the future.

There’s no argument it leans full tilt toward the high performance end of the market and offers a lot less for the utility buyer than the competition. In fact, the RZR is pretty much incomparable with its narrow stance, long legs and potent 800cc twin powerplant.

If we had a category called Best Pure Sport UTV, guess who’d win.

Yamaha waited a long time to add more vitamins to the popular Rhino. We’ve had a chance to run the 700 EFI powered Rhino and can say the wait has been worth it.

The new mill injects the UTV market sales leader with more of what it’s known for – sporty fun.

We have to wonder how long it will be before Yamaha does what the aftermarket has been doing to the Rhino for years – offering a full-on competitor to the Ranger RZR.

WORCS

In addition to Doug Eichner, Dana Creech will blaze a trail with his RANGER RZR on the WORCS circuit. Creech will race the “Rhino Mod” class.

Mud Racing

Team Highlifter-Polaris Racing will be back in full swing after a dominating 2007 season.

The team will be racing both RANGER XPs and RANGER RZRs in Bogger, Pro Series A, Pro Series B, Open and Mud Chic classes in at least eight races.

Team Highlifter-Polaris Racing also races Polaris Sportsman ATVs. The team is sponsored by Polaris Industries, Warn Industries, SuperTrapp, Dayco and Bayou Snorkels
