Raptor or YFZ450?

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

I am in the market for a new quad and am torn between the Yamaha 700 Raptor and the YFZ450. I am a sucker for displacement, but from what I’ve heard the 450 is one mean SOB.

I want to buy one of them and install some reliable horsepower and handling mods right off the bat. I have $3-$4,000 extra to put in either quad after the purchase. I have no plans to race but want to be able to carry the mail when I want to.

Any suggestions in what mods I should do first will be greatly appreciated.

BTW…I bought your latest issue at Walmart and as a first time buyer I can say I am very impressed.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks in advance,

Craig

Response:

Thanks for your email!

Without telling me what you have experience with in the past, I am reluctant to recommend one of these ATV’s.

The 450 is a purpose-built, dead serious competition targeted ATV. The Raptor is a much more versatile, trail friendly vehicle which, in my opinion – is the right choice for a non-racing buyers.

The power is super broad, it’s EFI and the chaissis is super compliant for both trails and dunes.

After you buy one or the other, we can talk performance mods!

Good Luck!

Motorhead Mark

Hi Craig,

I thought I would chime in as I have a lot of experience with both these units being one of the sport riders of our publication.

The 450 is a great ride but if your not focusing on the track you might want to stay away from it. The mill is already running at the top percentile of it’s power range and modifying it can be a nightmare if you want a reliable and trail-able sport quad that’ll really haul donkey.

The 700 Raptor in the SE package gives you almost everything you’ll find on the 450 including a sweet suspension package if you do happen to find yourself on the track wanting to throw down a few laps and heat up the shock oil.

Modifying the EFI mill is not terribly hard and the available modifications to really pump up the juice are out there.

If you’ve got 3-4 grand to throw into the ATV I’d recommend the SE Raptor and then take a look at either a big bore kit with a plug and play tuner box, a pipe/air, filter and some other goodies. Or go the whole way and throw a turbo kit on it.

Now the turbo kit is pretty serious and will probably run you a little more green but if you’re looking for something that is absolutely wild on horsepower the turbo kits out there really do impress.

Just a few thoughts,

AJ Lester

Moose Racing GNCC Contingency Program

Press Release –

Moose Racing continues its support for America’s largest off-road racing series, the Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series, with the 2008 Moose Racing contingency program.

Racers who purchase gear at participating Parts Unlimited/Moose Racing retailers and race at least 10 GNCC events will receive free gloves, as well as up to $200 in free race gear.

The new program will reward up to $15,000 in new gear and gloves.

The new program is an addition to Moose Racing’s existing contingency plan, which awards GNCC Class Champions with a complete Moose Racing outfit, consisting of Moose racing pants, jersey and gloves, as well as THOR Racing boots.

With GNCC Series hosting 65 classes in 2008, that’s an additional contingency package of $26,000, bringing the total program to $31,000.

Beyond contingency, Parts Unlimited and Moose Racing will support the sport by hosting four dinner shows at the GNCC events in 2008.

The selected rounds are the Triton GNCC in Melbourne, Florida, the Steele Creek GNCC in Morganton, North Carolina, the Spartan GNCC in Sparta, Kentucky, and the Ironman GNCC in Crawfordsville, Indiana. In Florida, Parts Unlimited will serve dinner on Monday, in North Carolina and Indiana it will serve dinner on Saturday, and in Kentucky it will serve dinner on Friday.

As always, the top Moose Racing pro riders will serve the dinner to the racers, including GNCC Champions David Knight and Bill Ballance. Music and entertainment are also planned for each event.

The 2008 Can-Am GNCC Series kicks off at the Triton GNCC in Melbourne, Fla., with ATVs hitting the trails on Sunday, March 2 and motorcycles on Tuesday, March 4.

The 2008 GNCC tour will feature over $3 million in contingency and prizes, making it the richest off-road series in the nation.

Complete information on the Moose Racing Contingency program is available at the all-new Can-Am GNCC Website, www.gnccracing.com/contingency.

BRP SIGNS TOP CANADIAN RACERS

Press Release –

BRP’s Can-Am DS 450 EFI ATV will be challenging for the podium in each round of the Canadian Motosport Racing Club’s (CMRC) National Series and the CMRC’s provincial series in Quebec in 2008.

Richard Pelchat, Michael Ouellette and Jimmy Morin, three of Canada’s top ATV motocross racers will pilot the DS 450 EFI in races across Canada, including Quebec.

“From the beginning of our DS 450 development program we were committed to making a machine that will win championships,” said Bernard Guy, ATV marketing director at BRP. “To win a Canadian championship would be very special for BRP, which is exactly what these three racers and teams will set out to do.”

Five-time Canadian national champion and St-Romuald, Quebec resident, Richard Pelchat, will be racing for the Can-Am team in select World Powersports Association ATV Tour events, but will focus on the 2008 CMRC national series events and 2008 ITP/Moose Racing ATVA/AMA Motocross Championship.

Michael Ouellette of Tingwick, Quebec, will ride Can-Am ATVs with the NDB Sport / PLX Sport team.

Last season Ouellette just missed taking third in the CMRC National Championship. This season he will focus on improving on his fourth-place showing in the series.

Cap-St-Ignace, Quebec’s Jimmy Morin suffered from bad luck last year during the CMRC Nationals, but four top-five finishes allowed him to finish sixth overall.

For 2008, Morin will race for the Can-Am team with the NDB Sport / PLX Sport team and looks forward to staying consistent through the entire series to make a run for the championship.

Each racer will pilot the all-new, high-tech DS 450 EFI, which features an innovative ALTEC aluminum frame and chassis components.

Inside the chassis sits the potent Rotax 450 engine that produces championship-calibre power.

This combination gives the DS 450 EFI model the highest power-to-weight ratio and the lightest dry weight in its class.

“We are thrilled that Kawasaki is making a big push for the SuperQuad Pro 450 Championship,” said Rick Murphy, CEO of the WPSA, after Monster Energy Kawasaki announced that it would field a three racer team in the Pro class during the 2008 PowerSports ATV Championship Tour Series.

“Last season their KFX450R was relatively new to them so I would expect their equipment to be very competitive this season. I sense that everyone on their racing staff and all their racers are dedicated to winning in the upcoming season, so this is going to be one heck of an exciting chase for the championship.”

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Triple Threat in the Pro 450 Class will consist of returning team member Josh Creamer and the addition of veteran ATV racing Pro Keith Little and Pro Russell Shumaker to the Monster Energy Team Green Ranks.

“Last year, our factory team had a pretty good start and with the addition of Keith and Russell, I really think we have the full package of experience and young enthusiasm. This season has the potential to be very successful,” said Team Green Manager Reid Nordin.

As a part of the expansion in the WPSA series, Kawasaki has brought in a satellite team with the help of Hetrick Gabriel Racing. The team will feature Trent Kendal in the SuperQuad Pro 450 Class and Mark Kendall in the SuperQuad ProAm Class.

“We see the Kawasaki “Triple Threat Pros” commitment to the PowerSports ATV Championship Tour as a real badge of honor. The Monster Energy Kawasaki Triple Threat takes to the track at the opening round of the 2008 WPSA series on May 3rd and 4th at Oak Hill Raceway in Decatur, TX.

KTM Canada Proud Sponsor of Ice Racing Series

0

Press Release –

KTM Canada is very pleased to announce the renewal of its sponsorship of the Eastern Canada Ice Racing Series sanctioned by the CMRC Quebec.

More than the main sponsor of the Series, KTM Canada will also honor its “Ready to Race” motto on the track with a very competitive team.

“Our strategy is to keep on developing KTM’s brand exposure all around Canada and all year long. We teamed up with Picotte Performance, who are well-known for their racing successes and two very talented riders to ensure a competitive presence of the KTM’s at each round of the Series” explains Florian Burguet, KTM Canada Marketing Manager.

To reach this ambitious goal, KTM can undoubtedly count on Andrew Ranger and Maxime Sylvestre, both hired by Picotte Performance, our new KTM Dealer in Granby, QC.

After clinching the 2007 Canadian Nascar Champion title, Andrew Ranger is ready to get the show started on his 2008 KTM 450 SX- F.

With the 2007 CMRC Supermoto National title in his hands, Maxime Sylvestre will do all he can to add up more victories to his season.

To reinforce our involvement in ice racing, KTM also partnered with the fourth round of the Series, the Valcourt Grand-Prix (February 16/17, 2008), to promote the KTM Cup.

The Valcourt Grand Prix is probably the biggest snowmobile event in Canada. Every year, it also features some of the best motorcycle races on its long and speedy oval track.

PIAA WORCS 8-Hour Endurance Race Successful

0

Press Release –

By any measure, the recent inaugural PIAA 8-Hour WORCS UTV/ATV Endurance Race, held at Speedworld Raceway in Surprise, Ariz., on Saturday, January 12, was a spectacular success, drawing 40 teams and more than 160 riders, ranging from factory teams to local ATV enthusiasts.

Josh Fredrick and Brandon Smith of Team Motoworks/Can Am took the midnight checkered flag for a wire-to-wire victory. Fredrick and Smith grabbed the lead in the first hour and never looked back, riding their DX450 to the Overall ATV Pro title.

Overall runner-up was Temecula Motosport’s Mike Cafro and Levi Marana, who picked up $500 in PIAA contingency cash. Third place overall went to Oregon’s Brandon Brown.

The PIAA 8-Hour also featured the first-ever UTV endurance showdown, with Travis Peterson scoring the overall UTV victory. And in a performance that showed the mettle of a stock Yamaha Rhino, Derrick Elliott won the Stock UTV class and second overall driving a Side X Side Magazine-sponsored machine.

“PIAA couldn’t be happier with the turnout and success of this first-time event,” said a thrilled Gordon Robertson, PIAA Powersports manager. “Everyone here had a great time. It was a safe, challenging, and fun event, and we were thrilled to be the sponsor. Thanks to Sean and Pepper Reddish and everyone at WORCS for putting on such a great race. And thanks to all the racers who took up the challenge.”

Reddish, president of WORCS, was equally enthusiastic: “I was pleased to see the turn out for this inaugural event. PIAA put a lot of work into this, and the overall atmosphere of this event was great. Endurance racing is awesome.”

Here are the class winners: ATV Pro – Josh Frederick, Moapa, Nevada; ATV A – Cody Mitchell, Las Vegas; ATV B – Michael Brown, Stillwater, Okla.; ATV C – Missy Mayo, Taft, Calif.; ATV Ironman – Justin Sessions, Terlton, Okla.; ATV Masters 40+ – Rick Ellsworth, Parker, Ariz.; UTV Unlimited – Travis Peterson, Escondido, Calif.; UTV Modified – Rudy Ludeke, Alpine, Calif.; and UTV Stock – Derrick Elliott, Beaumont, Calif.

While there are a handful of ATV endurance races held in the U.S. (such as the 12 Hours of ATV America each fall), the PIAA 8-Hour was the first endurance race to include the popular UTV/side-by-side vehicles. The race course featured a 6-mile loop that started on the Speedworld motocross circuit before heading out into the desert.

Kawasaki Gears Up For 2008 ATV Race Season

0

Press Release –

The Monster Energy Kawasaki ATV Racing Team is expanding for 2008 season after completing its first year aboard the Kawasaki KFX®450R, racing in more series with more riders who are determined to prove that the KFX450R is the quad to beat.

Fielding a three-man team in the World PowerSports Association (WPSA) ATV Tour, Kawasaki returning rider Josh Creamer will lead the charge.

Creamer has been a substantial part of the development of the KFX450R and his hunger to be at the front of the pack has driven the team to improve the new quad.

At the first-ever AMA Pro ATV Open Invitational last year, Creamer took home a fourth-place finish against top-riders from around the country.

Veteran ATV racer Keith Little will be riding along side Creamer aboard the KFX450R.

Racing for the first time in the WPSA series in 2007, Little turned out a notable fifth overall in the series standings. Completing the team in the WPSA series will be Russell Shumaker.

Coming off an eighth overall in the WPSA series, Shumaker will round out Monster Energy Kawasaki’s triple-threat in the SuperQuad Pro 450 class.

As a part of the expansion in the WPSA series, Kawasaki has brought in a satellite team with the help of Hetrick Gabriel Racing. The team will field Trent Kendal in the SuperQuad Pro 450 class, Mark Kendall in the SuperQuad ProAm class, and two additional riders in the A class.

The Kawasaki KFX450R saw its first championship in the 2007 World Off Road Championship Series (WORCS) ProAm class with the help of Dats Racing Team’s Bronson Bundy.

Teammate Dax Snow earned an inspiring third-place overall in the series. In 2008, Bundy and Snow return to the ProAm class, while the Dats Racing Team will enter the Pro class with team newcomer Robbie Mitchell.

Another part of the increase of the presence at other large series, Kawasaki will have Joe Haavisto compete in the New England ATV series (NEATV). Kawasaki offers a large contingency in the series, which sees over 500 entries a race.

“Looking at where we were last year, I wanted to improve not only on our program but our presence at the races we attend and the big races that are out there,” said Team Green™ Manager Reid Nordin. “The addition of a pro class rider for the WORCS series is big for us. We wanted to contend in that series and to have the Dats Racing Team there has really been great for Kawasaki. Last year, our factory team had a pretty good start and with the addition of Keith and Russell, I really think we have the full package of experience and young enthusiasm. This season has the potential to be very successful.”

The WPSA ATV Tour is in its third year and features eight events primarily held on the East Coast from May through August. The WORCS ATV Series will also host eight races with the events moving along the West Coast between January and October.

Tiller to Step Down as Polaris CEO

0

Press Release –

Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) announced today that its Chief Executive Officer, Tom Tiller, expects to step down from his position by the end of 2008 when his current employment contract expires. Tiller, 46, has been with the company since July, 1998 and its CEO since May, 1999.

Tiller explained his decision as a personal one. “After considerable thought and extensive discussions with the Board of Directors, I felt 2008 was the right time to leave. When I came to Polaris from GE, I expected to lead the company for a considerable period, and 2008 marks my tenth year here. I absolutely love our company, our products, and our people, and I’m proud of what we have been able to accomplish together. This past year was another good one for us in a tough environment, and I expect 2008 to be good as well. We have a very solid and experienced team, and I am confident in our ability to win well into the future. Our company is in good shape so it seems like the right time.”

“Polaris is a company that is built on innovation. And a fresh set of eyes every decade or so is a good thing. With just two CEO’s over the past 27 years, we have enjoyed consistent leadership and results. I am confident that we will identify a successor that will benefit our employees, dealers, suppliers, shareholders and communities for the long run. And for me personally, I am excited about ending my tenure as CEO in a very strong way, helping the Board choose a successor, and then exploring some new challenges.”

Tiller is expected to remain on the Polaris Board of Directors for a transitional period after a successor is named.

The Board of Directors, led by its chairman Greg Palen, is directing the search for Tiller’s successor and will evaluate both internal and external candidates. “The Board is committed to ensuring that Polaris goes through an effective and orderly leadership transition,” said Palen. “We have had a comprehensive succession plan in place for several years, and are in the process of executing that plan, which will ultimately identify the best possible candidate. We will take the time necessary to identify the very best person, and that process is expected to be completed this year.”

In the interim, the current management team, led by Tom Tiller and Bennett Morgan, President & COO, will continue to direct the company to ensure continuity.

As CEO, Tiller led Polaris to become a more diverse and global company. Net sales grew from $1.1 billion in 1998 to nearly $1.8 billion today and the Company expanded its International business outside of North America from 6 percent of total Company sales in 1998 to approximately 14 percent of Company sales today.

The market capitalization of Polaris also grew from approximately $1.0 billion in 1998 to nearly $1.7 billion at the end of 2007.

Additionally, Tiller continued to diversify the revenue and income generation capabilities of the Company to better weather economic changes including growing the side-by-side business into what now represents more than one-third of total Polaris ATV sales under the RANGER™ brand, and establishing Victory as the first successful launch of a major motorcycle brand in more than 60 years.

Tiller also significantly grew Polaris’ financial services business and expanded the highly profitable parts, garments and accessories business. During his tenure, Polaris invested $36 million into a new 126,000-square-foot Product Development Center in Wyoming, Minnesota, the single largest investment in product development the Company has ever made, which demonstrates the Company’s commitment to continuing to create innovative, top-of-the-line, high-quality vehicles for Polaris and Victory riders.

“We are thankful to Tom for the direction and success he has provided in the decade in which he has led the Company, and support his decision to take some time away from the life of a public company CEO,” said Palen. “His focus on helping the Board to identify the right person to lead Polaris in the future and his decision to remain as CEO until the successor is named and in place are key steps to ensure both a smooth leadership transition and a successful 2008 for Polaris.”

Polaris Reaffirms Full Year 2007 Sales and Earnings Guidance

Polaris will release its fourth quarter and full year 2007 financial results the morning of Tuesday, January 29, 2008, and remains confident in its previously announced full year 2007 sales growth guidance of five to six percent growth over 2006, and full year 2007 earnings per share from continuing operations guidance range of $3.05 to $3.10 per diluted share, a 12 to 14 percent increase over 2006.
