Canadian Couple Completes Cross-Continent Quadtrek

0

Press Release –

Marc Joinville and France Labonté have spent the last six months traveling cross-continent on their Polaris Sportsman 800 X2s.

At the beginning of January, they reached Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and completed the cross-continent part of their trek. Joinville and Labonté still plan to ride to Kingman, Arizona as their final destination.

“It has been an incredible journey,” said Joinville. “Considering the harsh conditions the Sportsman 800 X2s were used in, how incredibly rough some trail sections were and how much extra electrical gear they had to power, they performed beautifully.”

During a camping trip in Utah in 2000, Marc Joinville and France Labonté discovered an ATV trail that ran lengthwise through the state of Utah.

Their finding sparked the dream to ride their ATVs from Canada to Mexico, through the United States. They contacted Polaris about their dream and the maker of “The World’s Toughest ATVs” provided them with two new Sportsman X2 800 ATVs, parts and clothing for the cross-continent trek.

“When Joinville contacted us about their idea to travel across the continent, there was no doubt they would be riding Polaris ATVs,” said Jeff LeFever, marketing manager for Polaris’ ATV Division. “Their successful trek on the Sportsman 800 X2s proves Polaris builds ‘The World’s Toughest ATVs.’”

Joinville and Labonté departed from British Columbia, Canada on July 7, 2007 with their ATVs and a trailer that carried all the basics they needed to survive the journey.

Their “Quadtrek” took them through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona and down the Baja peninsula, to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Along the way, they stopped at various ATV jamborees and fairs, met fans and shared stories of their journey.

“We have met so many new friends and have seen so many incredible places,” said Joinville. “We thank Polaris for helping us fulfill our dream and providing us with the experience of a lifetime.”

Which 500 Is Best?

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

I want to buy a new ATV and I’m looking for a 500 class with a manual shifter.

I’m down to a 500 Arctic Cat or a 500 Suzuki Vinson. I know that the engine is the same but they don’t have the same suspension.

Which one do you suggest?

Remi

Response:

Thanks for your email!

You have picked two capable 500 class ATV’s. I don’t think AC offers a manual shift 500 for MY 08. I could be wrong!

The Vinson Suzuki is a great ATV and so is an AC 500 with a CVT. You can’t go wrong with either – I would pick the best dealer and the best deal.

Replacement Dump Box For X2

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

I’m looking for a dump box for my 2008 Polaris 500 2-up. It was flipped and most of the plastic broke. The metal mounts are good though.

Could you please let me know where I could find one?

Donna

Response:

Thanks for your email!

Seriously, you haven’t gone to a Polaris dealer and priced/ordered a new box? That’s the only place you’re gonna find one.

Cold Weather Starting Issues

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

I bought a used 2001 Yamaha Breeze for my kids last year. Overall, this quad is great in every respect except one: cold starting. It is incredibly difficult to start in winter.

I’ve already gone through one battery and I just ordered a starter motor for it because I cooked the first one trying to start it.

As I surf the net trying to find answers, I’m seeing that this is very common with the model.

The dealers don’t really have any advice and Yamaha does not make a cold-weather kit for it.

The Breeze doesn’t have a back-up pull or kick start so this makes the situation even worse.

I ususally have to bring it into a heated garage to get it started. Once started, the machine runs fine. I use premium fuel and synthetic oil. Spark plug is brand new and carb is clean.

What can I do?? Thanks in advance.

Glen

Response:

Thanks for your email!

Your problem is common with many models from most makers.

Here’s the issue – most of these vehicles are not sold to cold weather climes. They are calibrated and jetted for an average use profile and thus they tend to have too lean jetting and to lean choke circuits for our very cold temps.

I would suggest you richen up the main jet, buy a battery blanket and figure out how to wrap it around the battery.

Also, get a magnetic block heater and strap it around the engine cases. These things will all help but you still may have issues when the mercury is very low.

One more thing – make sure your choke/enrichener mechanism is opening completely when activated.

Which Plow Works Best?

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

I have a Polaris Sportsman 600 and I’m looking to put a plow on it.

Which is best, the Glacier that mounts to the front suspension or one that bolts to the frame back further?

Thanks,

Jeff

Response:

Thanks for your email!

If it was my ATV and my money I would not think twice about buying the Glacier Kit from Pure Polaris – this is the best, slickest working snow plow we’ve encountered thus far.
