New Brunswick ATV Owners May be Out of Luck

0

New ATV legislation completely banning riders under the age of fourteen from using ATVs in New Brunswick is going before Provincial Parliament today (Tuesday, February 20, 2007) for its second reading.

There’s much anger from the public on this issue and although the opposition (Conservative) stands firmly against it as presented, the Liberal Government is railroading ahead with the legislation.

There are already demonstrations being organized and the thousands of ATV owners in the province, especially those with children who ride with the family, are clearly upset that the Liberals have moved ahead without thought or consultation from the many ATV trail volunteers and users throughout New Brunswick.

Similar legislation has been passed in Nova Scotia and has netted a 30 percent drop in ATV sales there. Also, ten ATV dealers have folded in the wake of this shallow and short term thinking.

It’s interesting that the so-called experts who drafted this proposal have not suggested mandatory driver education, supervision or the legislated use of age appropriate ATVs. Doesn’t sound like they’re really all that interested in the safety of children, does it?

A better proposal would be that young riders up to age twelve would require adult supervision and mandatory safety training for all kids up to age fourteen who then could be granted off-road licences once they qualify.

Seems like a much more democratic way of doing things to us. Canada is still a democracy isn’t it? I’ll guarantee the clubs and volunteers would have been glad to participate in this if anyone had asked.

If you’re fried with government on this issue, check out letthemride.ca and start hassling those deep thinkers your province elected.

HAMILTON POLICE CALL ON ATV SEARCH & RESCUE

0

Press Release –

On Wednesday January 31st 2007, John Penny team leader, of the Ontario ATV Search and Rescue Federation received a phone call at approximately 11:00 am from Hamilton Police, SAR “Search and Rescue Commander Sgt. Duncan MacDougal requesting the assistance of the “Caledon District” Ontario ATV Search and Rescue group to aid in the search of a missing 55 year old man, Mr. Michael Hamm. The vast and rough terrain was an area that Hamilton Police were unable to properly search.

Dwight Banks, assistant team leader and Palgrave volunteer firefighter along with John Penny headed for the town of Waterdown, Ontario.

After preparing all necessary emergency gear and equipment without delay, they arrived at the command post in 2 hours to prepare for debriefing.

The weather was bitterly cold and the ground was covered with about 10 inches of snow. The snow was an additional benefit in looking for clues, footprints and also condensed the high marshy thistles to ground level. This enabled the 2 men to search the vast area 5 times less the time it would have been to cover the area in the summer.

Hamilton Police were very cordial and treated the group members with total respect and courtesy. They were fed and offered warm throughout the day.

Even with the use of a Helicopter, 6-wheel Argos, police search dogs, numerous trained police personnel and the Caledon ATV’s, the search was unsuccessful.

The day ended with another debriefing whereby the gentleman reported their findings and area description. Both were very confident that 95% of the grid they were given to search was completely searched with no signs or clues of the missing person, although they noted in their report there were certain areas that were impossible to cover.

Since then, Hamilton Police have now confirmed Mr. Hamm’s body was found by a man while on his daily walk in a secluded area amongst a cluster of cedar trees and brush. Based on the evidence foul play was not suspected.

This is just another example of the group’s continued support to assist local authorities, family members of missing persons and communities throughout Ontario.

Please take time to visit the web site at oatvsarf.org and learn more about the charity organization. Donations to cover equipment costs and training are always welcomed.

BRP GOES ON THE ROAD

0

Press Release –

Can-Am Spyder roadster: the next dimension in open-road riding

BRP introduced its first “on-road” vehicle, the 2008 Can-Am™ Spyder™ roadster. This three-wheel vehicle, with two wheels in the front and one in the rear, offers a completely new and stunning look.

Powered by a proven 990cc V Twin engine designed and manufactured by BRP-Rotax, Spyder roadster, with its unique Y-architecture, can be described as part motorcycle and part convertible sports car.

“Our Can-Am Spyder roadster is the next dimension in open-road riding. A true paradigm shift, the Spyder roadster offers a balance of performance and peace of mind with features like the Vehicle Stability System (VSS), engineered in conjunction with Bosch†, which includes anti-lock brakes, traction control and stability control systems,” said José Boisjoli, president and CEO, BRP.

BRP’s reputation was built on its ability to innovate and design products for powersports enthusiasts. After more than five years of research, the Can-Am Spyder roadster is now delivering on the company’s promise to offer a complete line of recreational motorized products in four segments: on snow, on water, as well as both off and on road.

While confirming that the Can-Am Spyder roadsters would be assembled in Valcourt, Boisjoli added: “This is an historic event for BRP, particularly for our Valcourt and Austrian employees, as it confirms the strategic role of BRP’s Québec manufacturing facilities for assembling complex and sophisticated vehicles, and BRP-Rotax’s leadership in engine development. With Can-Am Spyder, we are redefining the roadster category by bringing the powersports experience to the road through this new generation of vehicles. BRP is entering a new era that will provide growth opportunities for our company worldwide and potentially create new jobs.”

Plans are to start manufacturing units by fall 2007 with a progressive ramp-up of the production over the next three years to meet market demand.

“This event also marks BRP’s first truly global launch,” said Chris Dawson, vice-president, Strategic planning & Head of Can-Am Spyder Program. “In 2007, BRP will deploy the first phase of its go-to-market strategy: twelve selected American states and four Canadian provinces will offer Can-Am Spyder roadsters through BRP’s existing dealer network, followed by France and Spain in early 2008. In its second phase, BRP will expand its Can-Am Spyder offer to more North American states, Canadian provinces, Europe and other countries, and expects to be present worldwide within three to four years,” he concluded.

Among those participating in the event were Jean Charest, Québec Premier, Raymond Bachand, Québec Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Exports, as well as Yvon Vallières, Québec Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The Premier confirmed a reimbursable financial contribution of $17.8 million from the Government of Québec, through Investissement Québec, to support the development of the Can-Am Spyder roadster.

BEST IN CLASS AWARDS: BEST UTV

0

Awarded to the manufacturer producing a vehicle best fulfilling the demands of the UTV marketplace

WINNER: Arctic Cat Prowler

Talk about hitting the nail on the head! This time Arctic Cat has literally drilled the market with its first UTV.

The Prowler is the first side-by-side to accurately bridge the gap between sport and utility with a full-sized, full featured and stylish UTV while building in functionality on a ji-normous scale.

We’re impressed with the Prowler’s performance. Its domestically-built 650 Hemi 4-valve single is identical to the H-1 engine used in Arctic Cat’s 4×4 ATV models. In this application it delivers a lusty exhaust note, urgent acceleration and impressive top end speed.

There can be no denying the Prowler uses Yamaha Rhino styling cues and we like that a lot. The Rhino is the UTV of choice for those who look to sport more than utility.

However, sitting next to one another, the Prowler towers over the Rhino and displays a profile that’s longer, wider, taller and bigger in every way. With the Prowler there’s more interior room, more cargo room, more ground clearance and more storage.

Simply put, there’s more of everything here. The Prowler gives off a supremely “sporty” aura and refuses to disappoint when it’s wicked up and thrown sideways.

RUNNERS UP

Rangers are so popular Polaris claims they lead all UTVs in 4×4 sales. We won’t disagree. The 500 Ranger with EFI is a step in the right direction producing great power, seamless torque and cold weather and high altitude performance that’s second only to the Ranger 700 EFI.

The 500 EFI lacks nothing when it comes to utility versatility. Tons of cargo capacity and the advantage of three person seating is a Ranger bonus. On the down-side, the Ranger could use more sport-sizzle in response to the Prowler and the Rhino.

Yamaha sells Rhinos in scary volumes. What’s most interesting is how these sales are skewed to the performance crowd. The Rhino is light, lithe and tight and produces “let-er-rip” sensations when driven hard.

The 450 version of the Rhino is incredibly price efficient, putting it in reach of a wider audience than the 660. While its cargo capacity is small, its image is big. We’d love to see more top speed with the 450. It’s governed at a snail-like 40-44 mph.
