CSC Questions Logic of ATV Ban

0

The Canada Safety Council maintains to ban the use of ATVs by children under age 16 would be a mistake.

Enforcement would be difficult (if not impossible) on private property and in northern and rural communities where ATV use is common, and not just for recreation.

Child-size machines with reduced speed capability and a device to stop the vehicle remotely could be removed from sale.

Children who ride in spite of a ban will develop a disrespect for the law — an unacceptable attitude to take into adulthood.

Outrage Mounts at Proposed Ban

0

In response to the proposed legislation banning riders under the age of fourteen from using ATVs in New Brunswick.

I have personally been driving motorized vehicles since I was eight years old. Yes, I did have the occasional accident and once I had to get 4 stitches in my palm after falling off my motorcycle when I was around ten.

On the other hand, I’ve had more stitches from a swing falling on my head and a see-saw incident in grade three, but I don’t expect these recreation items to be banned in the near future.

I am not against legislation in the interests of public safety. I am against draconian measures that in my opinion are not very well thought out or rationalized.

I fully support the concept of preventing under-age drivers using adult-sized machines and believe that the majority of accidents that have had the most severe injuries have been a direct result of this type of use.

I do not support the prevention of children using smaller, children-sized vehicles. I have an eight year old son with special needs that prevent him from participating in team sports, but he does have the ability and aptitude to ride a small ATV.

I truly believe that I am a better driver today due to my many years of experience from a young age driving various motorized vehicles and hope that my son can build upon similar driving experience to perfect his adult driving.

I ask that you reconsider your opinion and give younger children the chance to drive appropriately-sized machinery.

Press Release –

Hard on the heels of ITP’s new-for-2007 SS106 and SS112 Alloy wheels comes the all-new SS108.

This dazzling 8-spoke wheel is available in two stylish finish options: bright, diamond-cut machined with black accents (topped with a tough clear coat), or in a dramatic satin black. As with the SS106 and SS112, a custom SS wheel cap is included.

They’re available in a 12×7 size, as well as unique 14×6 and 14×8 sizes designed specifically for front and rear applications, respectively. These dedicated sizes provide more precise fitment and make the most of 26- and 27-inch radial tire performance.

Like its predecessors, the SS108 is manufactured through ITP’s high-tech Advancecast process, resulting in an incredibly strong yet light one-piece aluminum wheel.

All SS Alloys have proven to be so durable, in fact, that ITP offers these wheels with a lifetime structural warranty: if you bend or break it, ITP will replace it!

The ITP SS108 wheel is available for most late-model 4×4 sport/utility ATVs as well as side-by-side UTV applications such as the Yamaha Rhino. The 14-inch models are a great choice for UTVs, as they carry a 650 lb. load rating!

ITP is also making the SS Alloy line available in convenient, pre-mounted tire/wheel kits, using ITP’s popular Mud Lite XL, Mud Lite XTR and TerraCross R/T tires.

In 2007, ITP is celebrating its 25th anniversary as the world’s #1 ATV aftermarket tire and wheel source, and continues to provide a complete line of innovative products for virtually all ATVs and applications.

New Brunswick ATV Owners May be Out of Luck

0

New ATV legislation completely banning riders under the age of fourteen from using ATVs in New Brunswick is going before Provincial Parliament today (Tuesday, February 20, 2007) for its second reading.

There’s much anger from the public on this issue and although the opposition (Conservative) stands firmly against it as presented, the Liberal Government is railroading ahead with the legislation.

There are already demonstrations being organized and the thousands of ATV owners in the province, especially those with children who ride with the family, are clearly upset that the Liberals have moved ahead without thought or consultation from the many ATV trail volunteers and users throughout New Brunswick.

Similar legislation has been passed in Nova Scotia and has netted a 30 percent drop in ATV sales there. Also, ten ATV dealers have folded in the wake of this shallow and short term thinking.

It’s interesting that the so-called experts who drafted this proposal have not suggested mandatory driver education, supervision or the legislated use of age appropriate ATVs. Doesn’t sound like they’re really all that interested in the safety of children, does it?

A better proposal would be that young riders up to age twelve would require adult supervision and mandatory safety training for all kids up to age fourteen who then could be granted off-road licences once they qualify.

Seems like a much more democratic way of doing things to us. Canada is still a democracy isn’t it? I’ll guarantee the clubs and volunteers would have been glad to participate in this if anyone had asked.

If you’re fried with government on this issue, check out letthemride.ca and start hassling those deep thinkers your province elected.

HAMILTON POLICE CALL ON ATV SEARCH & RESCUE

0

Press Release –

On Wednesday January 31st 2007, John Penny team leader, of the Ontario ATV Search and Rescue Federation received a phone call at approximately 11:00 am from Hamilton Police, SAR “Search and Rescue Commander Sgt. Duncan MacDougal requesting the assistance of the “Caledon District” Ontario ATV Search and Rescue group to aid in the search of a missing 55 year old man, Mr. Michael Hamm. The vast and rough terrain was an area that Hamilton Police were unable to properly search.

Dwight Banks, assistant team leader and Palgrave volunteer firefighter along with John Penny headed for the town of Waterdown, Ontario.

After preparing all necessary emergency gear and equipment without delay, they arrived at the command post in 2 hours to prepare for debriefing.

The weather was bitterly cold and the ground was covered with about 10 inches of snow. The snow was an additional benefit in looking for clues, footprints and also condensed the high marshy thistles to ground level. This enabled the 2 men to search the vast area 5 times less the time it would have been to cover the area in the summer.

Hamilton Police were very cordial and treated the group members with total respect and courtesy. They were fed and offered warm throughout the day.

Even with the use of a Helicopter, 6-wheel Argos, police search dogs, numerous trained police personnel and the Caledon ATV’s, the search was unsuccessful.

The day ended with another debriefing whereby the gentleman reported their findings and area description. Both were very confident that 95% of the grid they were given to search was completely searched with no signs or clues of the missing person, although they noted in their report there were certain areas that were impossible to cover.

Since then, Hamilton Police have now confirmed Mr. Hamm’s body was found by a man while on his daily walk in a secluded area amongst a cluster of cedar trees and brush. Based on the evidence foul play was not suspected.

This is just another example of the group’s continued support to assist local authorities, family members of missing persons and communities throughout Ontario.

Please take time to visit the web site at oatvsarf.org and learn more about the charity organization. Donations to cover equipment costs and training are always welcomed.

First Place for Pro Am Champion Justin Waters

Press Release –

Speedworld Raceway in Phoenix, AZ was the site of the opening round of the 2007 WORCS ATV National Series. The start of the Pro Am main event would see Kenda sponsored rider and 2006 Pro Am Champion Justin Waters crashing big and suffered a broken clutch cable on his Yamaha YFZ450.

Having to push his quad back to the pits for some needed work, Justin and his team would get the lucky break they needed. According to the officials, a number of the Pro’s missed course markings on the first lap and the result would mean a complete restart of the race.

Justin made the restart in just enough time and got off the line clean. At the end of the first lap he was already in fourth place and moving toward the front. The muddy and demanding terrain was no match for the Kenda Klaw XC and Knarly XC tire combination.

After 90 minutes of riding hard, Justin crossed the finish line in first place, with over a minute lead ahead of the field. KENDA TIRES PLOWED JUSTIN TO THE FRONT!
