USED SPORT QUAD SHOWDOWN: PART III

0

With the growing poularity of side-x-sides and the versatility of a sport utility ATV, the pure sport market just isn’t as red-hot as it used to be.

These ATVs are still a ton of fun though and if you’re not a racer or not interested in throwing down full pop for the latest and greatest, here’s a look at three late models that you might come across if you’re in the market for used iron.

2009 Can-Am DS 450 X mx

The power from the Can-Am’s Rotax mill seems to be corked up and begging to be released.

Down low the motor likes to stumble and jump as if it needs to breath better. Out of the hole, the Can-Am feels sluggish and while we know the power’s there, it doesn’t translate to the track as well as it should.

Its ITP tires really grab dirt and hook up well, however the lack of low-end torque is costly. Once you get through to third gear you start to realize the Rotax needs to get spinning before the power hits.

At a certain point in third gear at about half throttle, you can actually feel the motor spool up and come to life. This turbo-like response is a little unnerving and can be distracting when approaching the face of a big jump or whoops section.

While we’re being kinda hard on the Rotax mill, we do know that with the right accessories the motor really comes to life and works well. Perhaps for a novice rider, its power delivery makes it a handful.

The Can-Am is one of, if not the smoothest and easiest to maneuver ATVs both in the air and on the ground. The tight cockpit and bar riser puts all the important stuff close and help you to slide to the inside on hard berms and shift your weight while in the air to level out a crooked take off.

The near-perfect seat is easy to move around on and never gets in the way plus the foam seems neither too firm nor too plush. The foot pegs are big and wide and supported by a sweet set of aluminum nerf bars in case you lose your footing.

While most riders may not be conscious of the affect unsprung weight has on the reflexes of a 4-wheeler, the DS uses a lot of high tech components to reduce weight not carried by the suspension.

Lightened and re-thought axles, wheels, hubs etc. mean that when you launch off a lip crooked or come down sideways, the inertia of everything attached outside the suspension has far less leverage over the stuff above, including the rider.

The DS can land in the most awkward and off-axis ways and still not produce swapping or the feeling that you’ll be thrown off. It’s all so seamless you don’t notice it until you get on a different ATV.

The DS 450 MX features some of the highest tech factory shocks available from a dealer showroom. The KYB gas piggybackers up front and the remote reservoir gasser in the rear all use Kashima coated shock shafts.

High speed and low speed compression adjusters plus rebound clickers and a dual rate spring put these shocks right up there with the very best aftermarket stuff.

On the track the DS pounds back the stutter bumps and moguls and frequently accepts impacts that would require weeks of kidney dialysis to recover from on any other bike.

The link between low unsprung weight, low overall vehicle weight and a high quality suspension package noticeably puts the DS at the front of the pack. While you will pay a little extra for the MX package, the benefits far outweigh any extra coin you’d have to fork out.

The DS 450 is a very serious bikes probably best suited to the hardcore, closer-to-a-pro level racer. it has its quirks, but they could probably be ironed out with some help from the aftermarket. Its power delivery is probably beyond the comfort zone of anyone less than a highly experienced dirt meister, but we loved its high tech features and absolutely premium equipment list.

Would a serious, experienced racer podium the DS450 MX? We wouldn’t be surprised at all.

Polaris Launches Three Additional OffRoad Products

0

Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII), the leading manufacturer of off-road vehicles, today announced three additional Off-Road Vehicle offerings, the RANGER CREW® 900-6, Polaris ACE 570 SP and RZR 170 EFI.

To accommodate multi-passenger customers who are looking to haul more people, Polaris is excited to announce the all-new RANGER CREW 900-6. The RANGER CREW 900-6 has all the same premium features as the RANGER CREW 900 with an additional seating space in the front row replacing the center console that ups the carrying capacity to six passengers.

The vehicle offers the same features as the five-passenger RANGER CREW 900: class-leading 60 horsepower ProStar 900 engine, big towing and payload capacity, monstrous storage, comfortable ergonomics and state-of-the-art accessory integration with the industry-exclusive Pro-Fit cab system.

The RANGER CREW 900-6 will be available in Sage Green. Electronic Power Steering (EPS) models include Sunset Red, White Lightning and Polaris Pursuit Camo.

Polaris adds to the newly-introduced Polaris ACE line-up with the new ACE 570 SP. The vehicle offers an even more capable, confident and comfortable driving experience with the addition of Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and an Engine Braking System (EBS).

To ride all day with less fatigue, the ACE 570 SP’s EPS is the smoothest, most-responsive Power Steering available with Variable Assist for easier steering at low speeds.

For optimum control and smooth, even deceleration, the EBS works to control braking directly from the engine. These two new features found on the ACE 570 SP work in tandem to provide even more comfort, capability and confidence.

The ACE 570 SP is the third vehicle in the ACE family to be announced by Polaris this year and will be available in Black Pearl Premium Paint with 12 in/30.48 cm cast aluminum wheels and a cut-and-sew, adjustable seat.

The RZR 170 is the only side-by-side vehicle available for youth riders 10 years old and older. For Model Year 2015, Polaris is adding EFI to the popular youth model for easier starting, improved idle quality, smooth throttle response and improved speed limiting.

The RZR 170 EFI will continue to include a wide variety of safety features such as an adjustable throttle limiter to enable adults to set a maximum speed control limit, daytime running lights to increase daytime visibility, full floorboards, seatbelts, color-coded pedals, parking brake and side nets. The vehicle will be available in Indy Red and Voodoo Blue.

The RANGER CREW 900-6 in Sage Green and Polaris Pursuit Camo, Polaris ACE 570 SP and RZR 170 EFI will be available at Polaris dealerships nationwide starting in November. The additional RANGER CREW 900-6 EPS colors will be available in January.

Mark Your Calendars for Camp RZR Glamis

Polaris RZR wanted to remind off-road enthusiasts about Camp RZR in Glamis, Calif., on October 31-November 2.

Known as a celebration of all things RZR, the first Camp RZR was held during the 2013 New Years weekend, in the Glamis Sand Dunes, in Calif. The event was such a success, it was repeated later that year over Halloween weekend.

Polaris expanded the event internationally when the first-ever Camp RZR was held in the United Arab Emirates earlier this year; and added a second North American Camp at Brimstone, in Huntsville, Tenn., in September.

Similar to years past, Camp RZR will feature vendors, free food, giveaways, RZR 170 races, a Show & Shine competition, a kid’s zone, RZR demos and Polaris staff on hand to answer questions. The RZR170 races will include celebrity racers Ronnie Renner, Levi LaVallee, RJ Anderson and Colten Moore with autograph sessions on Friday and Saturday.

The evening of Friday, October 31, Camp RZR will air the premiere of XP1K2, presented by UTVUnderground, and produced by Mad Media. For the second installment, RJ Anderson has returned to pilot an all-new, custom-built Holz Racing XP1K2 Side-by-Side, which will feature a ProStar 1000 engine modified by Muzzys Performance, newly-designed Holz Racing suspension, and custom Walker Evans racing shocks. The video follows Anderson as he pilots the vehicle through wooded trails, massive dirt jumps and more than twenty jaw-dropping man-made obstacles.

This year’s giveaways are bigger than ever with more than $50,000 in prizes being given away on Saturday. The pre-grand prize giveaways start at 3 p.m. which include big-ticket items from Polaris and its partners, and the Grand Prize, a custom RZR XP 1000, will being given away at 7:30 p.m. All prizes require the winner to be present to win.

More information about the upcoming Camp RZRs can be found at www.camprzr.com, and on Facebook at facebook.com/PolarisRZR.

MAVERICK PILOT WINS IOWA RACING TITLE

0

Zac Zakowski secured the 2014 Open UTV Championship in his Can-Am Maverick 1000R X xc at the Iowa ATV Hare Scramble Series (IATVHSS) finale in Carlisle, Iowa. Maverick 1000R racers also competed at the Best In The Desert (BITD) BlueWater Desert Challenge in Arizona, and the Texhoma Quad Racing Association (TQRA) ATV Pro Challenge in Texas.

“Zac Zakowski fought hard all season, battling back from a knee injury, to capture the UTV championship with his Zakowski Motorsports-backed Can-Am Maverick 1000R. Zac, his team and family showcase unmatched passion for off-road racing, their fellow racers and the Can-Am brand, and we’re so pleased to have such a devoted driver bring home a championship,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am.

IATVHSS – FInale

Zac Zakowski piloted his colorful, No. 990 Zakowski Motorsports / Turnkey UTV / Can-Am Maverick 1000R to the 2014 IATVHSS Open UTV Championship with a solid top-five finish at the series finale held at Blue Ridge Run in central Iowa. Zakowski only needed to finish the race in order win the title. While leading the race on lap four, Zakowski made the decision to pull over and finish the race under his terms. He ended up fourth, but easily earned enough points for the season title.

“This was one of the hardest races I have done. We had to be smart and let competitors go by so that we could run our own pace and focus on finishing the race and winning the championship. I have to thank my co-pilot/co-driver Eric von Sprecken for all his help. This marks our first big cross-country championship in a UTV with more to come,” said Zakowski.

TQRA – ATV Pro Challenge

The TQRA ATV Pro Challenge in Memory of Caleb Moore was held at Underground MX in Kemp, Texas. The event, which was doused by heavy rains on Friday evening, featured both ATV and side-by-side vehicle racing.

Cody and Hunter Miller (Louis Powersports / Turnkey UTV / Can-Am) competed at the event with their Maverick 1000R vehicles. Despite a last-minute change that forced the side-by-side competitors to race only on the MX track, Cody followed up his solid fourth-place qualifying time with a second-place podium finish.

“We were able to hit every jump all the way to the downside with our Maverick,” said Cody. “I came out third off the start and after a six-lap battle I ended up second. A big thanks to Can-Am, Elka, Turnkey UTV, DWT, SSI, Beard and HMF.”

BITD – BlueWater Desert Challenge

The Can-Am / Murray Racing / ITP team finished the two-day Best In The Desert BlueWater Desert Challenge fourth in its class and fifth overall. More than 20 side-by-side vehicles competed in the UTV Pro ranks, with only 11 finishing the race.

For brothers Derek and Jason Murray, the top-five run kept their BITD finishing streak alive. It also kept the No. 1917 Can-Am Maverick 1000R race team in third place in the Class 19 (UTV Pro) standings with one race remaining on the season. Cory Sappington (Desert Toyz / Can-Am) also tallied a top-10 finish in his Maverick 1000R at the event held in Parker, Ariz.

“It was a rough course. We are very proud of this race being our team’s 30th consecutive BITD finish,” said the Murrays. “We could not have the success without the help from our entire crew and the best sponsors and companies in the industry.”
