FIRST RIDE: Kymco Maxxer 375

0

By Mike Lester

I’ve always been a sucker for the underdog and I just love it when one does something to justify my support. Kymco USA has put together some excellent new products for the 2010 season.

Most notable is its putting independent rear suspension on the popular MXU 500 (you’ll read about this one in the upcoming issue of All-Terrain Vehicle Magazine) and the totally new 375 Maxxer.

The Maxxer takes its guts from the 375 MXU introduced in ’08 and still this writer’s favorite engine in the Kymco lineup. Its 366.9cc 4-stroke churns out 26 ponies – not overly impressive if you’re a big bore fanatic, but for young riders or those loving to give it everything on the trails, this engine makes impressive power. There’s plenty of torque down low and consistent power all the way across the curve.

Bodywork and styling is brand new from the ground up and the Maxxer’s fit and finish is some of the nicest we’ve seen in the industry. There’s what Kymco USA engineers coin as a “crossover” feel to the Maxxer.

Essentially picture an MXU with the racks removed, the plastic trimmed up and a cool looking brush bar thrown on the front. You’ve got all the trail performance of a utility ATV including IRS, with more aggressive styling and a few pounds shed for a lighter, more performance oriented feel. Sound familiar? We’re thinking the Renegade should be flattered.

Kymco USA has also added steel braided brake lines to the dual lever braking system – this rider’s setup of choice. Stopping power from the hydraulic discs is on-a-dime excellent.

Also, since the Maxxer is based on the 375 MXU, it has a CVT with high/low range and reverse. Switching to 4WD in the goo is as simple as pushing a button and will get you unstuck quick.

We’d love to see diff-lock introduced featuring a sweet on-the-fly switch similar to the 500 MXU and hope Kymco USA takes this into consideration as larger displacement iterations of the Maxxer make their way into its lineup.

The independent rear suspension is a great escape from solid rear axle sport rides. Trail chatter is soaked up and spit out with very little harshness translating up to the rider. Open it up down rough, open stretches without fear of chiropractor visits later.

Kymco USA is onto something and has definitely sent an alarm warning the competition it’s a serious player in the ATV biz.

TrailFest Promises New Miles of Track

0

Press Release –

Along with beautiful fall foliage, crisp air, and sparkling streams, October brings thousands of off-road riding enthusiasts back to southern West Virginia for TrailFest.

From October 8-12, 2009, Hatfield-McCoy Trails is proud to host the premium off-road event of the year which includes riding the safest and largest trail system on the East Coast.

Factory demo rides, manufacturer and equipment expos, mud bogging, drag racing, poker runs, kids’ track, entertainment and special guests – not to mention thousands of dollars in give-aways – are all part of the fun for the whole family.

As in previous years, the Larry Joe Harless Community Center will serve as the event headquarters for the weekend, and campsites throughout the area are expected to be at capacity. “The whole event has really developed a reunion-like atmosphere,” said Jeffrey Lusk, executive director of the Hatfield-McCoy Recreational Trail Authority. “Our new online-community of riders has a large number of folks that identify themselves as ‘family adventurers’ or people who just like to hang with friends.”

The Trails marketing director Mike Pinkerton agrees. “I think a lot of people who meet in person this year are going to feel like they already know each other, thanks to the online community.”

A 2006 economic impact study estimated the Hatfield-McCoy Trails added 146 new jobs to southern West Virginia’s economy, as well as $2.7 million in income and $7.7 million in output.

Lusk says updated numbers would certainly show continued growth, as money is spent by a growing number of visitors each year in restaurants, at gas stations, and on equipment rentals and repairs. “TrailFest started in Logan in back in 2000 and then moved to Gilbert the following year. Attendance at TrailFest has grown steadily to nearly10 times that of the original event,” he said.

Hatfield-McCoy Trails made a special push this summer to open new single track trails for dirt biking; the miles of single track trails on Buffalo Mountain have increased from 4 to 17 – Buffalo now has more miles of single track than any other Hatfield-McCoy trail, representing almost 40% of all of its single track trails on all six systems combined.

“We have something for everyone,” said Pinkerton “TrailFest 2009 is revving up to be incredible fun.”

The Hatfield-McCoy Trial System was created by the West Virginia Legislature to generate economic development through tourism in nine southern West Virginia counties. It currently operates six systems with more than 500 miles of trails. Each system is open 365 days a year to ATVs, dirt bikes, select utility vehicles (UTVs), mountain bikes, horses, and hikers. Many of the trail systems also offer community connecting trails that allow visitors to access “ATV-friendly towns” to experience the charm of southern West Virginia.

Big Bore from Kymco

0

Unconfirmed rumors are buzzing of a 700-800cc Big Bore being developed and currently tested overseas for Kymco USA.

We think this engine could make its way into Kymco’s UXV side-x-side, as well as its MXU and Maxxer lineup.

No word yet as to when we’ll see an engine like this reach the shores of North America, but from what we’re seeing out of the Kymco USA camp, you can bet it’ll be good.

TOP GEAR: KLIM DAKAR PANTS

0

Klim’s newly designed Dakar pant simply rocks. Worn over your boot, Velcro adjustments around the ankle allow you to tighten or loosen the cuff to your comfort.

For all day riding, you can keep warm as the morning chill is in the air and as the day warms up, a 20 inch zipper opens at the side of each leg to reveal meshed ventilation to keep you cool as the air passes over your legs.

The shell is made of Cordura, so you know you’ll be protected from mud, roost, scratches, etc, but there are some other sweet features that take this garment to another level.

The inner legs have thick and heavy-duty leather to protect your legs from engine heat and cargo pockets on each leg are deep and expandable and close tightly with about a six inch Velcro strip to keep your wallet, cell phone, license or cash clean safe. The pockets aren’t water tight, so always pack your stuff in a plastic zip lock bag to keep it dry.

There are also flexible patches at the groin and around the knee area to allow for more natural movement in the saddle. Plus the elastic back waistband features 2 adjustable straps to tighten or loosen depending on the size of your lunch.

From a safety standpoint we’re impressed by this design. Alongside the leather inner leg and durable fabric shell, there are a ton of light weight breathable foam pads around the hip and butt that are easily removable to customize depending on your needs, plus the same padding is in the perfect location to cushion your knees from bumps against the fenders or tank that can result from maneuvering around in corners and on tight trails.

Klim’s Dakar pants are available in a number of colors. We chose black to match just about every Klim jersey and glove combination we own. Visit KlimUSA.com to find your perfect fit.

How Can I Gain An Advantage With My Renny?

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

I currently ride a 2008 Renegade 800X and I’m looking to get a little edge over friends riding the same ATV. Should I upgrade the filters or are there any little tricks or accessories that would help out?

I put on a set of ITP TerraCross tires other than that its stock.

Thanks as always,

Kevin Johnston

Hey Kevin – good to hear from you!

First thing I would do to your Renny is contact Dalton Pro (DaltonIndustries.com) and inquire about one of their clutch kits.

These kits are exceptionally effective, require a minimum amount of work to install and will definitely give you and edge over a stock comparable Renny 800.

There’s a lot of power being waisted in most stock ATV CVT’s. The cool thing about the clutch kit route is it usually improves mileage and there’s no increase in noise.

Which leads to my second suggestion. Try an aftermarket (I think BRP actually offers a silencer for your Renny) slip on silencer. They decrease back-pressure and almost always improve performance – marginally.

There may be an ECU re-boot from some pipe makers which will adjust the mixture to take advantage of the increased flow.

Keep in mind with an EFI mill it’s pretty hard to seize it by adding a low restriction exhaust – as it is when you have a carb.

Obviously if you flow more air you need to provide more fuel but an EFI mill will live off its knock sensor and should not hurt itself.

As well, the 80 degree Rotax 800 mill sounds sweet with a louder pipe. Oops, I’m not supposed to say that.

Let me know what works best.

Thanks,

Mark

Yoshimura Congratulates Borich on Win

0

Press Release –

Yoshimura’s Chris Borich didn’t hold back at this weekend’s GNCC round in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

He may have clinched the Championship last weekend, but there was no time to stand on his laurels.

From a bogged down first lap, Borich pushed his Yoshimura powered QuadRacer R450 to his seventh consecutive win.

Some may have thought that this Pennsylvanian was going to just have relax and ride this weekend but they were sorely mistaken.

Borich is obviously out to finish the series with a shut-out.

GNCC SERIES DEBUT FOR THE NEW QUADCROSS XC

0

Press Release –

ITP’s brand new QuadCross XC tires proved its potential in a big way at the Moose Racing Yadkin Valley Stomp, round 11 of the 2009 Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series.

Angel Atwell chose the new QuadCross XC for the rear of her FRE KTM and rode to a strong second place in the Women’s class on a very wet, slick and demanding red clay course.

With that, Angel clinched her first Women’s GNCC Championship after nine years of hard work toward that goal. Atwell has won seven events in 2009 on ITP tires, helping her to take the title with two rounds to go. Great job, Angel.

FRE KTM’s Adam McGill took his front and rear QuadCross XCs to an extremely close second overall in the XC1 Pro division. McGill, now holding third in the point standings, reported that he loves the new tires and could control his slides perfectly. He told ITP not to change anything!

Rounding out a great weekend for this team, Josh Kirkland claimed his fourth victory of the season in the XC2 Pro Am class. In his case ITP Holeshot SRs front and rear were the hot setup. Kirkland holds second in the point standings with two events remaining.

The all-new QuadCross XC has been designed specifically for high-performance trail riding and racing, using many of the design features that have made the QuadCross MX PRO Lite a four-time AMA ATV Pro National winner this past summer. The QuadCross XC adds the extra strength and larger sizing required for cross country use. The QuadCross XC incorporates a tough 6-ply carcass for higher puncture resistance and exceptional overall durability. This advanced carcass design has been proven to stiffen the sidewall during side loads without compromising ride quality. Along with reducing the bounce that’s common on most cross country knobbies, this design benefits acceleration, braking, cornering and overall balance as well, significantly reducing fatigue and lap times. An aggressive, dimpled tread pattern using a high-tech, long-wearing tread compound further enhances traction, feel and trail handling characteristics. Sizing is 20×11-9 for the rear (P/N 560547) and 22×7-10 in front (P/N 560546).

Just Bought an 850 XP

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

I have been reading Supertrax for over 15 years and just the other day decided to purchase an ATV.

I got a great deal on a Polaris XP 850 Sportsman (2009) and I’m wondering if there have been any issues with this ATV so far, as they are almost all new.

I have heard good things about them, but would trust your opinion. Also, are there any significant changes for 2010??

Thanks, keep up the excellent work….

Ryan

Reply:

Thanks for your email!

You have made an excellent choice in a new ATV. Some very early production XP’s were prone to plug fouling but this issue was resolved with tweaks to the ECU.

As well, some early XP’s had wear issues with the rear CV joints – however, we have not seen any more of this.

The 2010’s have some details modifications but if you purchased your XP from a Polaris dealer they will have ensured everything is up to date on your 2009 model.

Enjoy it – it’s one of our favorite rides!

Thanks,

Motorhead Mark
