KTM To Cut Production In Coming Year

0

Seems the worldwide belt tightening is beginning to affect the Powersports industry with KTM’s recent announcement they will be cutting production by about 10 percent this coming year.

Along with this news comes about 100 lay-offs among their nearly 2000 employees.

KTM claims it is well positioned in the marketplace with its premium priced products appealing to a less recession-vulnerable demo than its competitors.

We would agree as far as the ATV industry is concerned. KTM’s Pure Sport 450’s and 505’s are priced almost $3000.00 clams higher than some competitive Japanese and domestic OEM’s 450’s.

Press Release –

KTM is proud to announce its first-ever ATV contingency and rider support programs geared toward the “Ready to Race” ATV customer.

With KTM’s racing heritage and four race-ready ATVs in the line-up, supporting ATV racers was the next step in stamping KTM’s name in the ATV industry.

To reward current KTM ATV racers who are competing on 2008 or 2009 models, riders will now have the opportunity to earn their share of $529,000 in KTMCASH available in 12 different ATV racing series, making it the most comprehensive contingency package available to the ATV racer to date.

Once all event schedules are finalized, racers will be able to log on to www.xtrm.com/KTM to review the eligibility requirements, rules, series information and earn KTMCASH.

In line with KTM’s “Ready to Race” philosophy, KTM is also offering racers the opportunity for factory rider support packages. Racers are encouraged to submit their rider résumé to KTMATVracer@KTMNorthAmerica.com, fax 951-600-8866 or by mail at ATTN: ATV Racer Support 38429 Innovation Court, Murrieta, CA 92563. Competitive racers may receive a rider support package valued at up to $6,000, along with a KTM E-Z-Up and select KTM PowerPart or PowerWear items.

Résumés will be evaluated on the race series, class and past rider performance. There are a limited number of rider support packages available and résumés should be submitted as early as possible.

“KTM has always supported racing from a grassroots level,” Kurt Nicoll, Director of KTM Racing, said. “Being involved in ATV racing on the national and regional level is a great way to showcase how competitive our product is.”

The ATV contingency program covers multiple disciplines of ATV racing and includes the following national and regional race series: AMA / ATVA GNC motocross, Grand National Cross Country, OMA Nationals, WORCS, Extreme Dirt Track Nationals, ITP QuadCross, SCORE, Best In The Desert, New England ATV MX, TQRA – Texhoma Quad Racing, Mid-South Hare Scramble winter series and D37 Big Six Grand Prix.

“Providing a full package of contingency and rider support is a great way to reward our KTM loyalists and welcome new riders to the KTM family,” said Chris Vogtman, Specialty Vehicle Product Line Manager. “KTM is committed to the sport, racing and our ATV product. After a successful first year on the market, our KTM XC ATVs have proven KTM is serious about the ATV business. With the expansion of our “Ready to Race” product line to include the all-new and well-received motocross SX models, it was a natural progression to support racers at a higher level in year two.”

Can-Am Outlander 800 takes Pro Utility class in 10-hour endurance race

A three-man team consisting of Cliff Beasley, Richard Cecco and Michael Swift won the Pro Utility class by more than 15 minutes at the GBC Heartland Challenge endurance race near Carlisle, Iowa.

The team piloted its PIAA Powersport Can-AmTM OutlanderTM 800R ATV to the class championship and ninth overall in the gruelling 10-hour race that proved only the toughest utility ATVs would survive the course.

“Endurance ATV racing is the ultimate test for both rider and machine,” said Del Bohlman, Racing Manager for Can-Am ATVs at BRP. “The three racers all rode a smart race, but the Outlander proved its durability by beating the next closest class competitor easily. This is a big win for Can-Am and proves we have toughest utility ATV in racing.”

The racers will each split a grand prize of $7,500 for the race win, making it the most lucrative utility-class purse in ATV racing to date. Beasley, Cecco and Swift are all teammates from the Team Warnert Racing / Can-Am Grand National Cross Country race team.

Both Swift and Beasley winning the GNCC 4×4 Limited and 4×4 Lites class respectively. Cecco took third in the GNCC U2 class with five class podiums in 2008.

Eichner Takes Ninth Pro Win

0

Press Release –

Saturday, November 8, 2008 marked the 40th anniversary of the Historic Elsinore Grand Prix. Eichner is no stranger to the Lake Elsinore Grand Prix and considers it to be one of his most enjoyable races.

Friday before the race, all competitors were allowed to ride mountain bikes on the track to site the course before race day.

Eichner took advantage of the site-lap and returned to the Polaris / Lone Star / Eichner Racing pit with a smile stating this was the perfect track for his style of riding and the capabilities of his powerful Polaris Outlaw 450 MXR with enhanced power and exhaust from Yoshimura, numerous aftermarket components from Lone Star Racing, MAXXIS Tires, Rath Racing and GPR Stabilizer.

Eichner said, “The track was going to be fast, fast, fast and included a spectacular 70 ft. table top jump followed by a 90 foot double jump and of course the legendary Lake Elsinore water jump.”

Eichner couldn’t wait to get at it as the flag dropped on Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. It was a dusty start, but it was only a short time before you could see Eichner’s classic riding style aboard the Polaris leaving site of the crowd with a large lead.

Eichner and the Polaris Outlaw 450 MXR ran a flawless 45-minute race, mastered the jumps and turned on the gas on the fast open style track. With what appeared to be an untouchable lead, Eichner took the time to give fans “high-fives” as they jumped out of the cheering sections with their arms waving.

Clearly the crowd favorite, Eichner made this victory his ninth Pro win at the Legendary Lake Elsinore Grand Prix, but a first for Eichner aboard his Polaris Outlaw 450 MXR.

Sportsman 850 XP EPS Hauls at Heartland Challenge

0

Press Release –

It was a weekend about firsts. This was the first-annual Heartland Challenge, it was the first time the new Polaris Sportsman 850 XP EPS competed at an AMA /ATVA Sanctioned event, and it was the first time a Polaris 850 XP EPS Sportsman took a podium spot at an AMA/ATVA Event.

The GBC Heartland Challenge was going to prove to be a challenge indeed, with temperatures dropping, rain falling and even a few stray snowflakes.

This 10-hour ATV endurance race was set up on a brutal course to test rider and machine, mentally, physically and mechanically. Eight miles of mud, hills, trees, rock piles and obstacles, to be ran at a grueling pace for 10 solid hours, no breaks, no rest, no time outs with half the race to be completed in the dark.  Calling this race a challenge seemed like an understatement.

Saturday’s main event found teams that were formed with two-to-three riders working out the strategic game plans for the day including rider swaps and fuel stops. The Polaris/Rath/Dunlop team consisted of Daryl Rath, Frank Batista and Jason Dunkelberger.

Daryl Rath was going to take the green flag and clock in the first session. It was shortly after twelve noon when the signal gun was fired and riders made a running sprint to the machines to get this race underway.

The pit crew watched anxiously as Rath headed out of sight and into the woods before they headed to their stations to start what would be a long day of watching and waiting. As the race continued the Sportsman 850 XP EPS handled everything and more that the track handled it, and the team found themselves running in a strong second place position.

Switching riders throughout the day the team and machines continued to impress the fans, and the team was gaining on first place.

It was Batista’s turn to keep pushing forward and that he did, closing the gap even more and then taking over the lead. As he stopped to fuel the excitement in his voice rev’d the team as he announced, “We are leading…come on we are going to do this.” Darkness was coming and it was starting to feel even colder outside, but the team knew there was work to do; they still had four hours to go.

The team continued to lead as they clicked off laps and watched the clock. It was time again for Dunkelberger to get back on and go to work.

Everyone was excited, the fans braved the cold to cheer the riders on, and watch as the different teams proved what they were made of.

It was time for a set-back, Dunkelberger got on the machine and just before he clocked in acomplete lap, his machine suffered a small mechanical mishap, a broken belt causing the loss of the entire lap’s time of 23 minutes.

Running a flawless race until this lap the Sportsman 850 XP EPS was a fierce competitor in the Utility class. Even after the loss of those precious 23 minutes, there were only two brands left on the lead Utility Lap.

With a little more than two hours to go, the team was unable to regain the lead, but accomplished the goals set by themselves and Polaris.

Run a great race, prepare for the 2009 season aboard the newly-appointed contender in the GNCC National Cross Country Utility Class. That they did, with a podium to boot!
