Are Aftermarket Power Steering Kits Available?

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

Kent Lester was asked last year if there were any aftermarket power steering kits available yet. Is the answer still no?

The only quads with it from the factory are gutless single cylinder wonders compared to my 800 Can Am. Until I put tracks on it last winter, steering was not an issue.

However, with tracks on I can see that power steering would be a real asset; the bike has a tendency to get ‘sucked in’ to one side or another. That is to say when riding, if there is a drift or heavier or deeper snow on one side, the bike gets pulled off in that direction.

The bike is still pretty quick, but can’t be ridden on trails nearly as fast as it’s capable of because it constantly heads off into the woods.

Response:

Thanks for your email!

Think about this – if you were to “add” an aftermarket PS kit (when and if they become available) to an ATV not designed for such a system don’t you think the stress would potentially tear up your tie rods, ball joints and steering frog?

Power steering is useful on the ATV’s which we’ve sampled it on only with big mud tires.

We find little if any benefit from these systems with stock tires and wheels. Having said that, with a track kit I can only imagine how badly a PS assisted system could bend and wear out front end parts.

Our experience has been track kits used for substantial mileage on any ATV create advanced wear and loosened everything associated with the steering and suspension.

While I agree your handling woes would be made less severe, you would likely find the wear and potential expense to be a concern.

Justin Waters Takes It on the Road

Press Release –

After several successful seasons racing WORCS ATV Nationals, #95 heads for the big show on the other coast

This time last year, the defending WORCS Pro-Am champion was chasing three titles on familiar tracks in the Western United States.

This year, coming back from an early season injury, Justin Waters now finds himself aboard a Team Epic Racing Can-Am DS450, fighting hard for respect in the Amateur ranks of ATVA motocross racing.

At the Can-Am Northeastern ATV National in New Berlin NY June 7-8, Waters was introduced to a different breed of ATV racing.  “I wanted to just ride well enough to make Sunday’s races. I was surprised at my first event to qualify directly in. These guys out here are fast.”

It was a hard and memorable lesson in both Open A and Production A. “I was nervous and didn’t expect the contact that was going on out there.”  He logged a solid 7th and 4th place in his Open A motos, 7th and 14th in Production A.

Heading into the Oakley ATV Southern National in Blountville TN June 20-21, he was gaining confidence, but experienced the aggression in Production A once again.

“I got a good start but got hung up with another rider for a ridiculously long time.  These motos are fast – you can’t afford any mistakes like that. You just don’t have time to ride hard and recover like you can in WORCS.”

He posted his best effort in Open A – earning a podium in fact, with 3rd and 4th place finishes – but was pulled from the class when it was determined he was actually running a motor smaller than class allowances; for upcoming races this season, he plans to run in the 450A or Four Stroke A division.

In the meantime, he’s on the road and training hard.  “I’m starting to get more comfortable riding motocross, starting to get to the point where I can expect some good results. I’ve been training on a more technical motocross track, getting used to that style of riding. Gauging jumps, moving my body more for turns.”

Next up is the Suzuki Summer Nationals in Armaugh PA July 12-13, then Red Bud, then finally wrapping up the ATVA MX series at Loretta Lynn’s in August. Then Waters will head West to hit the last couple rounds of the WORCS season.  “I can’t wait to see how this mx training will help me in WORCS. I want to be on that podium in the Pro class, and this may give me the edge I need.”

RZR First Side-by-Side to Finish Baja 500

Press Release –

The RANGER RZR continues to be a force in the racing world, this time by not only winning the UTV class at the Baja 500 but by being the first side-by-side to ever finish the race.

After being the last vehicle to start, Mark Lindsay’s team, consisting of Lindsay, driver Phil Holdsworth and co-driver Michael King, raced the sole RANGER RZR entry to the finish line in 19:49:30.

Thirty-three miles into the race, the challenge of a loose, rocky incline brought the vehicles in front of Lindsay to a stand-still. When it was finally his turn, he blew through the obstacle with ease. The RANGER RZR did well through the sand washes, silt beds, whoops and everything the race threw its way.

“Being the first side-by-side to finish and win the Baja 500 UTV Class is a true testament to the quality and ability of the RANGER RZR,” said Craig Scanlon, product line sales manager for the Polaris Side x Side Division. “We congratulate Mark Lindsay and his team for continuing to show the RANGER RZR can dominate even in the most extreme conditions.”

When asked why he chose a RANGER RZR for the race, Lindsay responded, “For the Baja? This isn’t farm work, you need a real machine out here.”

Lindsay’s team was sponsored by Afraidium Racing, FST, BS Sand, Iron City Polaris, Bronco Clutch, F2 Racing, HMF Exhaust, The Lindsay Group RE/MAX, MAXXIS tires, TireBalls, OMF Wheels and King shocks.

Suzuki Rolls Out the 2009 QuadSport LT-Z400

On June 25, Suzuki formally introduced the 2009 QuadSport LT-Z400 at a media event held at the Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall, California.

Against a backdrop of grazing thoroughbreds, this race-horse breeding farm proved to be a fitting venue to show off the 2009 enhancements to this well-bred champion ATV.

Since its inception in 2002, the QuadSport Z400 has had an impressive racing heritage as well as being a popular and versatile all-around sport ATV.

The design concept for the 2009 QuadSport Z400 was “Engineered for Fun” and with the additional performance improvements and cutting-edge QuadRacer R450-styling, the Z400 certainly lives up to its objective.

“The 2003 LT-Z400 took ATV performance to a new level,” Glenn Hansen, Suzuki’s Communication Manager explained during the presentation. “It pushed the performance edge and gave Doug Gust the Championship in the 2004 Pro Production class. The 2009 QuadSport has once again set a new level of performance.”

In addition to adopting the aggressive QuadRacer R-450 look, the new Z400 borrowed other elements from its racy sibling. First and foremost is the addition of Fuel Injection.

Electronic fuel injection gives the Z400 a noticeably smoother and quicker throttle response, improved starting and performance in a variety of conditions, and improved fuel efficiency.

Mel Harris, Vice President of American Suzuki Motor Corporation, spoke highly of the efforts that went into the design: “Suzuki is definitely the leader with fuel injection in its products.”

The 2009 model also boasts an R450-like logic and ignition system. This Engine Control Unit monitors throttle position, engine RPM and the rate of change of both. By deciding the optimum settings for volume and timing, the ECU also gives the ATV improved traction.

The new QuadSport’s engine updates include a change in cam profile and timing, an intake port redesign, change in internal muffler structure and shorter exhaust header pipe.

These four elements help deliver a noticeable improvement in low to mid-range power output while maintaining the Z’s strong top-end power.

Externally, the chassis has been redesigned to be more accessible, functional and user-friendly. The front track has been widened by an inch, and the caster, camber and trail have all been changed. All of these modifications give the Z400 a lighter steering feel and more sure-footed handling.

Changes in both the front and rear suspension offer the rider a firmer response plus a plush feel resulting in a comfortable, enjoyable ride.

Ergonomically, the new Suzuki QuadSport moves the rider into a different position that allows more freedom of movement for weight shifting and comfort. The handlebars have been lowered and reshaped and the footrests have been lowered and widened to the same width as the R450.

Additional changes to the 2009 model include other R450 inspired updates that make the Suzuki QuadSport Z-400 the perfect all-around sand, trail and track ATV. No other ATV offers the versatility of the QuadSport Z-400.

“Engineered for Fun”, the QuadSport Z-400 offers a combination of trail-riding fun and high-performance attitude that keep it a breed apart in performance, styling and comfort.

The QuadSport Z-400 will be available in September in both white and yellow for $6199 MSRP.
