KAWASAKI-SUZUKI ALLIANCE ENTERS NEW PHASE

Press Release

The “alliance” announced in August, 2001 between Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., (KHI) and Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) will now focus on potential exchanges of indirect resources, rather than on direct OEM product exchanges. It was originally formed as a mechanism to allow sharing of parts sourcing, platform production of OEM units, and joint development of new products.

Following a successful three year arrangement, both companies have considered factors related to sales volume, profitability, customer reaction, influence on brand image, and competitiveness of each OEM product. The two brands have jointly agreed that more focused, independent development activity will serve to further enhance their respective brand identities with their loyal customer bases.

This modification to the alliance relationship will mean that OEM product sales will be discontinued, and the following models will not be available from Kawasaki, effective with the 2007 model year: KSF400A, KLX125A/B, KSF80A, KSF50A, KDX50A

KHI product development has been accelerated during the initial alliance phase, as more resources were able to be placed against brand-specific product needs. The company will continue to develop new models to replace some of the above.

Achieving significant savings in development resources was a primary goal of the relationship with SMC, and having done that, KHI is in a stronger position for investment spending against future product introductions. The market environment is such that expectations for new technologies and their product applications are ongoing, and KHI is intent on continuing to deliver excellence in these areas.

The alliance with SMC, and its benefits to our dealers, will be reviewed on a regular basis. Joint activity will be determined based on careful review of the effect it will have on both retail profitability and customer loyalty.

ATV Super Challenge

The first Mi-TRALE ATV Super Challenge of the season will be on Saturday, July 2nd, in Bruce Crossing, Michigan. This is the 2nd year that Bruce Crossing will be hosting an ATV Super Challenge. The event will be at the specially constructed ATV Super Challenge track, a mile east of Bruce Crossing on M-28.

The ATV Super Challenge races are for Sport, Trail, and Utility ATV’s. The classes are based upon engine size, and includes both 2 Wheel Drive and 4 Wheel Drive. This concept has caught on in other parts of the country. An ATV Super Challenge track is being built in the state of New York. The Wisconsin ATV Association has 3 ATV Super Challenges scheduled this summer.

The Mi-TRALE ATV Super Challenge Series includes a race at the permanently built ATV Super Challenge tracks in Greenland, Michigan and in Ewen, Michigan. The ATV Super Challenge in Greenland is a part of the Ontonagon County Fair and will take place on July 30th, and the Ewen race is a part of the Ewen “Log Jamboree.” That race will be on Saturday, September 24th.

Yuasa’s Got Juice!

If you own an ATV, chances are your electrical system relies on a battery made by Yuasa. This brand name has more equity in the recreational powersports world than Javex does at your local laundromat.

Not surprisingly, Polaris recently awarded Yuasa its coveted Three Star Cost improvement award and most importantly for you as a consumer, its Grade “A” Quality Achievement Award.

Polaris subjects its vendors to rigorous quality standards to ensure every component will deliver the highest performance, durability and reliability under the most severe use conditions.

As a result of endorsements like this it’s no surprise Yuasa is the number one manufacturer and distributor of batteries for the recreational powersports industry.

Yamaha ATV Race Report

Bill Ballance cruised to a comfortable lead in Round 7 of the Grand National Cross Country ATV championship in Millfield, Ohio on Saturday, May 14.

The Yamaha YFZ450 pilot bested the next rider, Adam McGill, by some 20 seconds at the finish in the nearly two-hour event. Balance’s third win of the season vaulted him solidly into the points lead as his strongest rival, Chris Borich, could manage only 15th place overall.

Despite his generous margin of victory, the path to winning was anything but comfortable for Ballance. Copious rainfall in the days preceding the event left the track a mess, with mud holes waiting to trap riders and the gooey stuff literally inundating the machines. “The bikes had probably 200 pounds of mud on them. A lot of bikes were overheating but the Yamaha kept on going strong,” he said afterwards.

In fact, there were an impressive four YFZ450’s in the top 10 at the Ohio event, which was named for John Penton, the famous Ohio enduro rider of the 1960-70s.

Yamaha-mounted Chad Duvall charged hard to earn his spot in the top five while Jeffrey Vensel, a Junior rider, scored an impressive ninth overall and amateur Anthony Hill rounded out the top 10.

Sport bike, Winch… What?

We had the pleasure of testing Warn’s new lightweight, compact and easy to install 1.5 ci Winch for Sport ATVs.

This is the ticket for the increasing number of sport riders who want to take their 2×4 Sport ATVs on trail rides but fear they won’t be able to handle terrain like a full-on 4×4.

We elected to install the Warn 1.5 ci (1500 pound) lightweight winch on a Honda 400 EX. The unit only weighs 11 pounds!

KYMCO USA Joins Community Outreach Racing Program

Press Release – KYMCO USA, exclusive North American distributor of KYMCO brand scooters and ATVs, has become an official 2005 sponsor of Team Sheriff Racing, a unique community education program developed by deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.

With their NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) police race cars and Formula One CCS (Championship Cup Series) police race motorcycles, Team Sheriff travels up and down the West coast to race tracks and school presentations, as well as making regular appearances at community, industry, and media events.

The goal of Team Sheriff is to reach out to young people to educate them about the dangers of drugs, gangs, impaired driving, and illegal street racing. The cars and bikes are raced by the deputy-drivers and supported by sponsors including KYMCO USA.

KYMCO’s sponsorship includes the donation of Super 9 model scooter for use as a support vehicle at the track. According to Deputy Churney, on busy race days, as many as 15 off-duty deputies staff Team Sheriff Racing, and the Super 9 scooter will facilitate movement.

It will especially help at spread-out venues like Pomona Raceway, one of the 3 major tracks, including Las Vegas and Sonoma, visited by Team Sheriff. Churney said the Super 9 would not only be practical transportation, but also an asset in drawing the attention of young people because “it looks gnarly.”
