Toyota Forms Partnership with Yamaha Canada

Press Release –

Yamaha Motor Canada is pleased to announce that Toyota Canada Inc. has signed on as title sponsor of their motocross, road and ATV factory racing teams.

The agreement is the latest chapter in a successful relationship between two industry leaders that spans over 40 years and comes on the heels of a recent project that saw the introduction of a 2006 Toyota Tundra TRD Yamaha Edition.

“We have worked hard the last few years to develop promotional opportunities that would benefit both organizations,” comments Tim Kennedy, National Marketing Manager for Yamaha Motor Canada. “Both Toyota and Yamaha have storied racing traditions, so it made sense to form a strategic partnership in this area. This sponsorship is a great way for Toyota to speak to a new audience, show their commitment and expose their brand to fans of the sport.”

Peter Swanton, National Sales Manager for Yamaha Motor Canada, commented, “This is a big help for our race teams. To be at the top in racing requires a tremendous amount of resources each year. This commitment from Toyota will bolster our efforts for 2006.”

“Toyota has always had an excellent relationship with Yamaha, so we are pleased to extend that even further by being the premier title sponsor of the Yamaha factory racing teams,” said Tony Wearing, Managing Director of Toyota Canada Inc. “This partnership is very fitting because the combination of Toyota and Yamaha brings together many of the world’s very best vehicles, whether on two or four wheels. We look forward to a full and exciting race season with Yamaha this year.”

Team Yoshimura/Suzuki slogs it out at Red Bud

Press Release –

The Red Bud GNC national was dogged by rain for the entire four days of the event. A low-pressure area in Lake Michigan created a spinning storm that never left.

Although the rain wasn’t too heavy, it was fairly constant resulting in a dramatically cut down track. The surface of the track held up nicely though and race day featured an eminently “raceable” (although shorter) track.

The first moto saw Joe Byrd snag a clean holeshot from the far right gate slot. Joe was followed by Natalie, Gust, and Jones. This set up a race long dogfight that featured some of the best racing of the year. The top four ran nose to tail the entire race.

Jones went on a big charge at about the midway point and looked to be a sure bet for the lead. But, going through the whoops section, he got a rock stuck in between his rear brake lever and the frame.

“I went into that little left after the whoops,” Jones said. “I went to hit the rear brake and the pedal didn’t even move. I rammed John so hard I don’t know how he didn’t wreck. If he hadn’t of been right in front of me, I would have gone right off the track.”

In the resulting melee, Gust got around Jones, while Natalie maintained the lead. Jones was able to kick out the rock a lap later but by then he was relegated to third. When the checkers waved, it was John Natalie, followed by Gust, Jones, and Byrd.

Moto two was a big holeshot for Digger Doug Gust. #55 led followed by Natalie, Jones, and Byrd. Natalie and Gust got together halfway through the lap with Doug going over a berm and losing six positions. Byrd got around Jones and took off after Natalie.

All three riders were dicing heavily for the first half of the race. Natalie started pull a bit of a gap while Jones and Byrd were scrapping. Jeremiah finally overshot a berm at the bottom of the ski run jump and by the time he got going again, the finishing order was set.

Natalie won with a 1-1 score. Byrd bagged second with a strong 4-2. Jones tagged the last podium spot with a 3-3. Doug Gust battled all the way back up to 4th netting a fourth overall.

“I was hoping that Doug and I could be on the podium together this race,” said the Gunslinger, “Maybe next time at Muddy Creek.”

YFZ450 Sweeps Women’s GNCC ATV Race

Press Release –

Angel Atwell won her second GNCC ATV race of the season and led a 1-2-3 sweep for Yamaha in the women’s division in rural Seymour, Missouri on May 6. Also riding potent YFZ450s, Lexie Coulter finished second and series points leader Traci Cecco came in third.

With rain falling before and during the event, the dark Ozark Mountains soil turned slick and gooey, adding to the difficulty of negotiating four 11-mile laps of woods, hollows and streams – and plenty of rocky uphills and downhills.

At the dead-engine start Cecco got her machine fired up first and took the lead until she – along with the rest of the class – was thwarted by a slippery hillclimb about three miles into the first lap. By the time the riders found a way around the obstacle Cecco was back in 10th with her sights set on catching the leaders. “It was a tough track, toughest of the year so far,” she reported after the race. “The rain started to pour halfway through, and it was very hard to read the track.”

After working her way up through the field, Cecco and Atwell battled near the front until the mid-race pit stop. Not long afterwards, though, a traffic bottleneck held up Cecco while Atwell forged ahead, ultimately to take the lead and the win.

With the season nearing the halfway point, Cecco and Atwell hold a strong points lead over the rest of the competition on their Yamahas.

Cat’s Lineup Rich With Big Bore Sport Utes

In case there was any confusion on this topic, in the last issue of All-Terrain Vehicle Magazine we announced the arrival of a 700cc EFI powered Arctic Cat 4×4. The new powerplant used by Cat is in fact, the Suzuki 700 EFI, same as used in the King Quad.

As most informed observers know, Suzuki owns one third of Arctic Cat and is its primary supplier for ATV and snowmobile powerplants. The arrival of the 700 EFI motor in the successful and capable Arctic Cat 4×4 chassis makes the company one of the most prolific suppliers of Big Bore Sport/Utility models.

Its line up now includes the domestic-built (not Suzuki) Hemi 650 single, the smooth and melodic 650 V-twin (Kawasaki) and now the 700 EFI.

All these models feature AC’s FIS fully independent rear suspension, single lever brakes, CVT tranny, shiftable 4×4 with front diff-lock and Arctic Cat’s innovative modular rack system that provides the attachment of one bi-jillion accessories including a fully transportable duck blind/ice hut.

Bombardier ATV becomes Can-Am

Press Release –

Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. (BRP) launches its 2007 all-terrain vehicle (ATV) line-up and re-brands its ATV products to Can Am™. The Can Am name recaptures the spirit of BRP’s unequalled performance, superb handling and advanced design that are unique in the industry. In June 2005, BRP unveiled its new ATV strategy, shifting its focus to ATV and powersports enthusiasts.

“We believe the Can Am brand better represents the positioning of our products in the marketplace and provides the perfect platform to reach out to and attract powersports enthusiasts,” said José Boisjoli, president and chief executive officer, BRP.

BRP made its debut in the ATV market in 1997. By 1999, the Traxter® was named “ATV of the Year” by ATV Magazine. In 2003, BRP became the first and only manufacturer to offer a full line-up of ATVs designed for two riders.

In 2005, the Outlander™ 800 H.O. EFI was introduced and reaffirmed BRP’s commitment to making products with powersports enthusiasts in mind. Since then, the Outlander has been the company’s rising star and flagship model, embodying power, performance and a truly exhilarating ride.

Last September, BRP introduced the Outlander 650 H.O. EFI in North America and it, too, received great ratings. Today, BRP achieves yet another milestone in its ATV strategy: the revival of the Can Am brand, which further reinforces the company’s commitment to ATV enthusiasts.

BRP’s category-leading Ski Doo® and Sea Doo® products have demonstrated its passion for innovative and market-shaping products. That same spirit, which was also behind the original creation and triumph of Can Am in the mid-70’s, comes alive again through the 2007 Can Am ATV line-up.

“Can Am is part of our history, our heritage and our future,” concluded Boisjoli. “For BRP, Ski Doo and Lynx™ mean snowmobiles; Sea Doo, watercraft and sport boats; Evinrude, outboard engines. Can Am will, from now on, mean ATVs.”
