2015 KAWASAKI KX450F

0

Motocross?! What on earth does motocross have to do with our regular coverage of ATVs and side-x-sides?

Quite a bit actually and their relationship was reinforced last year while attending Kawasaki’s dealer show in San Diego, CA where we saw Kawi’s latest ad campaign featuring a Teryx and a KX450F positioned beside one another in the same full-page advertisement.

Research showed many offroad enthusiasts own more than just one vehicle and their interests spanned over multiple disciplines. Based on this info, rather than marketing the KX450F to only moto junkies, Kawasaki decided to branch its moto message out to its ATV and side-x-side customers as well.

Speaking from personal experience, this writer’s an avid motocross enthusiast and I spend a lot of my spare time at the motocross track with my family.

Whether it’s watching my two girls race or just hanging out and putting laps in for practice; getting out my dirt bike brings me back to my roots and my love for off-road motorsports. In fact, many of the people I know who love ATVs, side-x-sides and even snowmobiles started out riding a mini bike as a kid.

Perched proudly on a display rack in our garage is a 1974 Honda MR 50 Elsinore and right beside it are my kids’ first bikes. These are the foundation for some great memories, but more importantly have allowed our kids to be actively involved in motorsports from a young age.

So when we got the invite to ride the 2015 KX motocross bikes, I didn’t just pounce, I pushed and shoved everyone else aside and made it clear I was going to this intro.

Kawasaki’s success winning races has been underscored by Ryan Villopoto’s dominance earning 4 supercross championships in a row. Over the past decade Kawasaki has also won more amateur and 250F championships than any other manufacturer.

For the last 4 years, Kawasaki’s biggest advantage has been its focus on engineering a bike that the rider can customize to better suit his riding style.

The 2015 KX450F has risen to another level with greater rider adjustability and improvements to the motor, chassis, suspension and brakes.

The battery-less fuel injected 449cc liquid-cooled 4-stoke single features a new bridged box bottom piston that increases compression ratio and improves combustion efficiency for a stronger pull and quicker revving motor.

Returning for 2015 is the popular launch control mode, which helps maximize traction in first and second gear when starting on slippery surfaces. Also back by popular demand are the DFI couplers, which easily allow you to tune the power curve by altering the ignition and fuel mapping by simply snapping a different colored closed circuit connector to the ECU module.

The connectors are designated for Standard, Hard or Soft Terrain. The Black connector is used for hard terrain and makes for a smoother power delivery. This is also the best connector for a novice rider to use.

On the opposite end is the white connector designated for soft terrain which generates a more aggressive throttle response and what a pro-level rider would opt for.

The Green connector is what Kawasaki considers the balanced connector and what is best used for a general setup.

Optional KRS software offers more adjustability as you can customize your own preferences for what amounts to an infinite range of settings.

We’d love to see these two features on an ATV or side-x-side. Provided EPA regulations can be met, how awesome would it be to easily change the power delivery based on the terrain you’re riding?

This technology has given Kawasaki a competitive advantage on the track and sets them further apart from the competition in the offroad market.

The biggest news for 2015 is the new Showa SFF-Air TAC (Triple Air Chamber) fork where the right fork acts as your spring and the left fork does the damping.

The front fork consists of three functions: Spring, Damper and Air. The SFF-AIR replaces the metal spring with an Air Spring Cartridge (internal chamber) in the right fork leg that is pressurized to 145psi. The right fork also has an outer air chamber that is pressurized to 7 psi and third lower (balance) chamber that gets charged to 130psi.

The three chambers work in harmony to maximize small and large bump absorption and increase the level of adjustability and durability.

The lower balance chamber produces an opposite force against the inner and outer chambers. We increased the air pressure in the inner chamber to increase ride height and stiffen the fork for initial ride in. By also increasing the air pressure in the balance chamber we were able to eliminate spikes during full compression and unwanted chatter.

You can easily alter spring pressure without having pull the fork leg apart and every KX 450F includes a digital air pump, which is ideal for checking and adjusting the air forks with precision.

Out back, the Uni-Trak suspension with Showa Shock gets a revised valve code for improved high-speed handling and stability.

Other notable improvements to KX 450F are a slimmed down aluminum perimeter frame and stronger aluminum swing-arm, lighter axles, a new self-locking rear axle nut and an oversized floating brake rotor. The front floating brake rotor is now 270mm and floating petal design makes for more control and consistent feel under harder braking.

We’re impressed with the track performance of the 2015 KX450F and also with Kawasaki’s leading edge technology and if we have the opportunity to attend another 2-wheeled event, you can bet we’ll be elbowing our way to the front of the queue.

2015 RZR XP 1000: BUYING HORSEPOWER INSURANCE!

0

In what may be the most intriguing marketing move we’ve seen this year, Polaris just announced the new 2015 RZR 1000 will get a three – yep, just three – horsepower increase over last year’s 107-hp claim for the original.

If you’re like us you’re probably wondering, “Why bother”? After all, three ponies amounts to about a three percent power-up – not exactly pulse pounding. Here’s what the minds at DirtTrax think is going on.

BRP has made it known it will always offer the highest performing model in every segment it does business in. The company has pretty much put its money where its mouth is when it comes to ATVs, snowmobiles and watercraft. BRP consistently stomps on the competition with big power and class leading performance.

Remember, the original RZR XP900 produced 88-hp from its parallel twin. The XP 900 sat alone at the top of the horsepower mountain for over two years. Even Arctic Cat’s Wildcat 1000 when introduced, did not eclipse the RZR XP 900’s 88-horse claim.

We were solidly convinced when Can-Am launched its Maverick targeted directly at the XP 900 and the Wildcat 1000, it would push the limits of SxS power over the 100-hp threshold. Guess what? The Maverick came out the box with a torque-blessed 101-hp, 1000cc V-twin.

The Maverick definitely mowed the Polaris RZR’s lawn – and not by a little bit. Making matters worse, Arctic Cat came back with a mid 90’s HP update to its 1000cc V- twin.

In a manner we can only describe as voracious, Polaris not only defended its Pure Sport SxS turf but plowed the competition into the ground with the all-new RZR XP1000 producing an obscene 107-hp. We’re pretty sure the competition was not impressed.

So, why is Polaris crowing about a three horsepower bump to 110? We think it goes like this: Polaris knows its strongest competitors (Cat and Can-Am) won’t sit still in 2015 and will declare 110-hp as the standard.

Simply stated, Polaris just took out horsepower insurance – and believes three ponies will do the trick!

ZFORCE vs. RZR

0

We’ve been posting tidbits about a new pure sport side-x-side from Chinese manufacturer, CFMoto.

This is the first off-shore manufacturer to jump into the pool head-first with a totally sport-focused SxS, the ZForce 800 EX.

The first feedback we got was that this unit is a rip-off of the RZR. Truthfully, the Wildcat Trail took the same abuse when it was released and the two look as completely different as two 50-inch-wide side-x-sides can possibly look. It’s like saying a Ford is a rip-off of a Chevy because they both have a cab and a box.

Park a RZR and a ZForce next to each other and you’ll discover there’s a ton of technical differences between the two and, yes, even in the way they look!

Mechanically, there’s very little crossover – certainly no more than what you’d find from a Can-Am or a Cat compared to a RZR.

We’ve recently returned from CFMoto’s manufacturing plant in China and were happy to see a strong focus on quality control and a sincere willingness to accept input from North American customers and engineers.

Clutching on these units is from Quebec-based manufacturer CVTech and many models feature compression and rebound adjustable Elka shocks – arguably one of the finest shock manufacturers in the industry.

Aesthetic and geometric differences are significant enough the ZForce is unique and its option package makes it a very appealing vehicle to consider in this class.

We’d like to see CFMoto continue to grow its dealer network across North America and watch its continued focus on quality control put the company in a place where it can grab more of the market.

For now, we’ll continue to run our ZForce 800 to its limits and remain cautiously optimistic as we evaluate.

CAN-AM’S HETRICK TAKES SECOND AT MILLVILLE

Can-Am DS 450 racer Joel Hetrick earned second overall in the Pro class at round six of the 2014 Mtn. Dew ATV Motocross National Championship Series held near Millville, Minn.

Can-Am Pros secured three top-five finishes in both the Pro and Pro-Am classes at the iconic Spring Creek Motocross park. Can-Am Pro Travis Moore also won both the Pro and Pro-Am classes at round five of the New England ATV Motocross series held in New Hampshire.

“We had a good weekend in Minnesota and New Hampshire. We earned the second spot on the Pro class podium with Joel Hetrick and also netted top-five finishes from Josh Creamer and Jeffrey Rastrelli,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “Hetrick continues to impress aboard his DS 450, with yet another consistent finish. Travis Moore continued his pursuit of a double championship In NEATV by winning both Pro-level classes.”

ATV MX Nationals

The Mtn. Dew Spring Creek ATV National, stop No. 6 on the ATV National Championship series tour, hosted its first ATV motocross weekend since 2011. Thunderstorms and heavy rain were in the forecast, but held off to allow for competitive racing on a challenging course.

JB Racing / DWT / Mtn. Dew Live Wire / Can-Am DS 450 Pro Joel Hetrick earned a Pro class podium for Can-Am at round six. Hetrick battled back from the sixth-place position in each moto to earn two, top-three moto finishes. His 2-3 score was good for second overall on the weekend and gave him a 13-point cushion over third with three rounds remaining.

“My Can-Am worked awesome. This was one of the roughest tracks so far. This has been a good season and I am going to try to get on the podium,” said Hetrick. “I was second in qualifiers and didn’t quite get the starts I wanted, but I went to work and got second overall.”

Two other Can-Am DS 450 Pros also made a run at the Pro class podium in Josh Creamer (BCS Performance / Can-Am) and Jeffrey Rastrelli (JB Racing / Cheerwine / Can-Am). Creamer came out of the gate in second place in moto one, but ended up taking third.

After a mid-pack start in moto two, Creamer picked off three other racers on his way to fourth. His 3-4 score was good for fourth overall. Rastrelli, who earned his first-career ATVRiders.com Top Qualifier Award earlier in the day, took fourth in the first moto and then started moto two in second. By lap two, he took over the lead and held it for three laps.

After a bobble on a difficult downhill section, Rastrelli lost the lead, but rallied to take fifth in moto two to earn fifth overall, matching a season’s best. BCS Performance / Can-Am DS 450 racer Ronnie Higgerson took 10th in the Pro class. He also finished on the Pro-Am podium at Millville, earning third.

Higgerson, the current Pro-Am class points leader, now has five straight podium finishes, two wins and a 31-point lead going into round seven. Second place in the Pro-Am standings belongs to Rastrelli, who was fifth at Spring Creek. William Lloyd (JB Racing / Cheerwine / Can-Am) captured fourth in the Pro-Am class and earned a third-place podium finish in the Open A class.

NEATV-MX

BCS Performance / Whitcher Racing / Can-Am X-Team rider Travis Moore, the reigning NEATV-MX Pro class champion, expanded his points lead in the Pro class by winning both motos to capture the class overall victory at round five of the series held at Jolly Rogers MX in Lempster, N.H. Moore also won the Pro-Am class aboard his DS 450 ATV to take over the points lead. He trailed the leader by 10 points by tallied 60 points on his way to the win and lead. Seven rounds remain on the 2014 NEATV-MX season schedule.

“My Can-Am was literally unstoppable today,” said Moore. “This track got super rough and there were big holes and rocks sticking out everywhere. Thankfully, for the amount of awesome people behind me and me being able to train hard, I’m back on top and looking for another championship or two,” said Moore.

Side-by-side racing was also part of the NEATV-MX weekend and Can-Am Maverick pilot Wayne Chamberland led from start-to-finish in his Can-Am Maverick. He’s the current points leader heading into the next round.

Power Increased for 2015 RZR XP1K and XP1K-4

Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII), the leading manufacturer of off-road vehicles, announces the Model Year 2015 RZR XP 1000 and RZR XP 4 1000 will feature a higher output 110 horsepower to dominate the dunes, desert, trails, race track or anything that stands in their way.

Introduced for Model Year 2014, the RZR XP 1000 and XP 4 1000 brought significant innovations to each of the hallmark Power, Suspension and Agility aspects of RZR while adding a new level of interior comfort and accessory customization.

The vehicles were built for the pinnacle of performance with an all-new Polaris ProStar 1000 engine that provided an industry-leading 107 horsepower with a true 999cc of displacement, making it the most powerful and largest engine in its class. For 2015, Polaris ups the ante again by giving the class-leading vehicles an incremental power upgrade to keep RZR at the top of its game.

“As always, RZR has been the leader of recreational side-by-sides due to their ultimate combination of power, suspension and agility,” said Craig Scanlon, general manager of Polaris Side-by-Side Vehicles. “Even though we just launched the RZR XP 1000 and XP 4 1000 last year, we’re always looking to improve upon every aspect of our vehicles’ performance.”

To achieve 110 horsepower, the 2015 RZR XP 1000 and XP 4 1000 feature a new calibration with high-output cams, stiffer valve springs and a higher compression ratio of 11:1.

The upgraded horsepower further increases the RZR XP 1000 and XP 4 1000 dominance in power with nine-percent more power than anything else in their classes. A revised exhaust system, incorporating closed loop control and catalyst technology, enables the ProStar 1000 to not simply add power, but also be cleaner and more efficient.

To handle the increased power, the 2015 RZR XP 1000 and XP 4 1000 feature new direct flow intake covers, new belt and a new clutch cover with more ducting providing two times more airflow directly to the clutches.

The RZR XP 1000 will be available in Havasu Red Pearl, Voodoo Blue and White Lightning, and the RZR XP 4 1000 in Havasu Red Pearl and Voodoo Blue. All units feature standard Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and will be available in dealerships starting in July.

Robinson and Cecco Podium with their Scramblers

Last weekend, Scramblers would run at TORN’s Round 5 in Bulcher, Texas and Round 9, GNCC’s Snowshoe, in Snowshoe, West Virginia.

Team UXC Racing’s Chris Robinson would line up his Scrambler XP 1000 at TORN looking for another win. With a field of ten Utility quads and limited passing spots, a good start would be crucial and, when the flagged dropped, Robinson piloted the Scrambler XP 1000 into second place position. Two-miles in, Robinson was able to take the lead and rode home to another win.

TORN will be on summer break until September 5, so Robinson will be taking to the desert for Best in the Desert’s Vegas to Reno, on August 15.

In West Virginia, Rick Cecco would suit up for the last GNCC race before the summer break. Snowshoe combines aspects of every other spot on the circuit: rocks, hill climbs, mud bogs, roots and an elevation so high that it can cause a machine to perform much differently.

Cecco saw trouble early on with goggles that failed forcing him to pit on the first lap. After the initial stop, he used every lap and the power of his Scrambler XP 850 to gain on those in front of him. Though he was back in the fifth position for laps one through five, by lap six he was able to move into the third position.

Through lap seven, Cecco remained in the third position, but had mere seconds between himself and second place. Having only a handful of miles remaining on the last lap, Cecco managed to overtake the second position and grab yet another podium finish. Cecco goes into the summer break in fourth in the 4×4 Pro Class with Team UXC Racing’s Michael Swift sitting in fifth.

Team UXC is sponsored by Polaris Factory Racing, Driven Powersports, Maxxis Tires, Fly, Evans Coolant, Axis, Hiper, ROX Speed FX, Dirtworks, SSI Decals, Thermo Tec, Leatt, Ricochet, DP Brakes, Spider, Moto Pro Training, Scott, Outerwears, FASST, Fourwerx Carbon Fiber, America’s Motorsports, Ams-Oil, Tire Balls, Ruralube, Rigid Industries, Holz Racing Products, Knight Krawlers Kustoms, Yoshimura, Finishes That Last, Rock Power Sports

Ranger’s HIPPO System Provides Mobile Power

Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII), has engineered a Polaris RANGER CREW Diesel side-by-side utility vehicle with an integrated multi-power system, a first for vehicles in this category.

A flip of a switch allows operators to power hydraulic, pneumatic, electric and welding equipment directly from the vehicle’s diesel engine through the integrated HIPPO Multipower System from the Mobile Hydraulic Equipment Company.

The Polaris RANGER with HIPPO MPS represents a continued expansion into non-traditional markets for Polaris to serve its increasing base of work customers.

Operators in the rail, municipal, construction, oil and gas, rental, utilities and mining industries as well as the military already consider the proven HIPPO MPS indispensable and this all-in-one solution increases their flexibility and mobility even more.

This is the first time a Polaris vehicle’s engine has been engineered to power a robust multi-power system like the HIPPO.

“The versatility provided by integrating the HIPPO MPS with the Polaris RANGER is extremely valuable for transporting personnel, heavy duty tools and a four-in-one power source to hard-to-reach job sites,” said Dave Longren, vice president of Polaris’ Off-Road Vehicles division. “When getting on-site means going off-road, our customers trust us to get them there. They also trust in the capability of HIPPO power equipment and combining the two meets a vital need for our customers”

A properly maintained vehicle will simply need to be fuelled up and it is ready to go since all the equipment is powered from the RANGER’s 24 horsepower diesel engine. This feature greatly reduces the maintenance time associated with four separate systems. The integrated HIPPO 1041CP Multipower System has one hydraulic tool circuit, two quick disconnect pneumatic fittings, two 120 volt electric outlets at 20 amps and one welding console with quick disconnects.

The RANGER is the perfect vehicle to partner with the HIPPO MPS. Features such as seating for three, On-Demand True All-wheel drive to tackle tough terrain, 500 pound cargo box capacity and one ton of towing capacity, ensure a highly-capable vehicle able to tackle the toughest of tasks.

“The Polaris RANGER with HIPPO MPS allows you to go anywhere and do anything – providing robust power to remote locations; quickly, easily and reliably,” said Chris Klope, chief operating officer, Mobile Hydraulics Equipment Company. “No one does off-road utility vehicles better than Polaris and pairing our HIPPO Multipower unit with this vehicle delivers a unique tool, simplifying work for the user. All-terrain mobility with hydraulic, electric, welding and pneumatic power at the touch of a button – it just doesn’t get any easier than that.”

The RANGER with HIPPO MPS is currently available for sale through authorized dealers, Polaris Fleet Sales and defense channels.

ITP MAMMOTH MAYHEM MUD TIRE

0

When it comes to slinging mud, it’s all about the rubber.

ITP’s latest addition to its mud line of tires is the 32-inch Mammoth Mayhem, which sports an extra-deep, two-inch lug that literally propels you through the gooiest muck with ease.

Its self-cleaning lugs also channels mud out of the tire tread delivering maximum traction all the time.

Realizing mudders are willing travel miles along hard-packed trails to reach the gnarliest mud holes; ITP put extra thought into the centerline transitions of the tread design to provide the smoothest ride in its category.

The thought process didn’t end there either. The Mammoth Mayhem is also considerably lighter requiring less horsepower to turn it’s claws, which translates to more power to the ground to propel you forward.

We mounted our Mammonth Mayhems on a set of ITP’s new black finish SS216 wheels and installed the tires on our 1000cc Can-Am Maverick X rs and then set out to stir up the closest mud hole we could find. In typical ITP fashion, these tires lived up to their infamous reputation.

The entire installation and ride evaluation can be seen in this week’s episode of DirtTrax Television.
