POLARIS SPORTSMAN ACE: QUESTIONS ANSWERED

0

Lots of questions surround Polaris’ latest offering that seems to have the offroad community adequately fired up. So let’s take a closer look at the Sportsman ACE and try to add a bit of factual content to your water-cooler discussions.

You’re right. At first glance it looks weird! Once you get up close to it though and start to understand what it is, it grows on you. The ACE is the perfect union of a Sportsman ATV and RZR, but it’s meant for a single passenger. It’s 48-inches wide (same width as an ATV) and goes anywhere your 570 Sportsman will go. It’s also trail-legal just about anywhere across the United States.

Nope, it isn’t targeted at the same guy that rides the dunes in his XP1K every weekend. The Sportsman ACE is aimed intentionally at entry-level riders, youth and smaller or less experienced female riders.

Right off the start, let’s make it clear that if you’re expecting 107 ponies in the ACE you’re gonna be disappointed. That is until you ride it. Polaris engineers have been doing a tremendous job mining horsepower out of the ProStar mills. They’ve developed an all-new ProStar single cylinder engine that churns out 32 horsepower, which the company claims is more powerful than its own 400 HO.

Will we see a 570 dropped into the ACE? We sure hope so. There’s so much potential for this vehicle to expand as it gains acceptance in the market. Even with it’s current engine it’s a blast to drive and you can bet there are already ACE race divisions being formed.

Again yes, it does have a seat like a RZR (it actually is a RZR seat) so you sit in the ACE and don’t straddle it like an ATV. It also has a steering wheel so you’re actually driving it and not riding it. There’s a 3-point seatbelt and a shifter at your right like your RZR, a ROPS certified roll cage and it also features Polaris On-Demand True AWD/2WD.

The Sportsman ACE uses MacPherson struts up front similar to the 570 Sportsman and dual A-arms out back suspended by steel-body coilover shocks. This set-up delivers 8.2-inches and 9.5-inches of travel respectively.

Ground clearance is actually ten-and-a-quarter inches, which is more than the 50-inch RZR. The ACE rides smoothly, provides adequate power through the trails and didn’t leave our test riders feeling poopy-faced in spite of being spoiled regularly by much higher displacement engines.

The MacPherson strut front end opened up plenty of foot room in the cockpit for a six foot tall driver. Smaller pilots will enjoy the adjustable sliding seat that makes reaching the accelerator easier. You’ll also notice as you slide into your seat that the floorboard is flat so you don’t have to lift your legs in and out of the cab.

Unbuckle the safety net on either side and swing your legs effortlessly into place like you would in a Ranger. We think this has serious appeal to someone that’s finding it increasingly tiresome to throw a leg over a seat, but still hasn’t lost his passion for trail riding.

Polaris claims the Sportsman ACE has received its highest consumer testing response out of any vehicle it’s ever introduced – including the RZR. We hear so many comments about how the industry needs to offer more affordable offroad vehicles and at $7,499 US we think the Sportsman ACE could be another homerun.

FIRST LOOK: POLARIS SPORTSMAN ACE

0

I remember back when the 50-inch wide RZR 800 first rolled through the doors surrounded by smoke and a lightshow at its introduction in Surprise Arizona so many years back. Polaris had created and entire segment that has spawned a wide variety of versions right up to the recently released 107 horsepower XP 1000. This insane growth has our Facebook page lighting up on a regular basis with questions of “What’s next?!” and “Where can Polaris go from here?”

When the horsepower wars are at their peak and prices to own the biggest and baddest seem to be escalating, Polaris has once again pulled a rabbit out of it’s helmet with an entirely new segment that’s already receiving a wide range of comments from the offroad community.

The Polaris Sportsman ACE is admittedly a bit odd looking at first when you notice there’s only one seat. Closer inspection reveals the steering wheel and speedo are centered in the dash. Its lines are the perfect marriage of a Sportsman and RZR like these two offroad vehicles spent a wild weekend together and nine months later their love child was born and they named him “ACE”.

The front rack takes on elements of a Sportsman and underneath you’ll find a 2.8 gallon semi-dry storage bin. Need to tie down your cooler or camping supplies? The bed out back looks eerily similar to the RZR’s. You’ll recognize a doorway similar to that of the RZR except when you unbuckle either mesh door and step into your seat, you’ll notice the flat bottom floorboard has no lip to step over which makes getting into and out of this vehicle incredibly easy.

Once you’re seated inside the cockpit, which is surrounded by a ROPS certified roll cage, you can slide your seat forward or back for comfort, which is great if your spouse who rode it last happens to be taller or shorter than you. Your teenager will also appreciate this feature to get distance to the pedals as comfortable as possible.

Turn the key and an all-new ProStar 32-horsepower single roars to life. We’re already seeing Facebookers scoff at what they see as a puny engine unworthy of their attention, but stick with us here – this engine actually rocks! Polaris claims it churns out more power than its own 400 HO and in this chassis which is about the length of a Sportsman 2-up Tourer, there’s plenty of power to keep a novice to intermediate rider happy and provide a few heartfelt giggles when opened up on the trail.

Rounding the first corner in a new vehicle is always a mixed bag of apprehensive excitement. The ACE corners beautifully though even with the accelerator mashed to the floorboards. There’s enough jam to get the ACE sideways, but since you’re seated in the center of the vehicle, you have a balanced feeling like you do on an ATV, plus swaybars add additional stability to keep the vehicle in control. Counter steer quickly and the ACE straightens back up immediately to keep you moving down the trail.

We encountered a variety of terrain during our first ride including chatters, rock-strewn trails and steep hills. The ACE’s MacPherson strut front end and dual A-arms out back suspended by steel-body coilovers behave admirably delivering 8.2-inches and 9.5-inches of travel respectively. Ground clearance is actually ten-and-a-quarter inches, which is more than the 50-inch RZR so you can pass easily over most rocks without tearing up your bellypan. Furthermore, there’s surprisingly little feedback up through the steering wheel while navigating chatter whereas after a day of holding onto handlebars across the same trail system might result in stiff shoulders and serious arm-pump.

The Sportsman ACE clearly isn’t targeted at the XP1K pilot, but maybe he’s got a son or daughter that wants to ride with mom and dad or perhaps throwing your leg over the saddle of your Sportsman is getting tougher, but your passion for trail riding is still as feverish as ever. Doesn’t driving your Sportsman seem like a pretty cool alternative to riding it?

Polaris seems to have the formula figured out for finding a hole in the marketplace and adequately filling it to meet the needs of an un-serviced segment. The company literally created the pure sport SXS segment and the Sportsman ACE just might be the start of something entirely different.

Jagged X Wins Best in the Desert’s Parker 250

Polaris RZRs kicked off the Best in the Desert race season with a win at the THR Parker 250, in Parker, Ariz. 2013 Best in the Desert UTV Champions, Jagged X and the No. 1919 RZR XP 4 900, with Jagged X’s Brandon Schueler and Blake Van de Loo would take the checkered flag, and Coastal Racing’s No. 1934, with Scott Kiger and Mark Holz, taking second.

The inaugural race of the year for BITD saw the largest UTV entry yet with 33 side-by-sides entered. Schueler and Van de Loo would start in thirteenth position. Thanks to some great driving and a trouble-free day, they were able to work their way to the front and pass the No. 1934 Coastal car for the win.

Team UXC Racing’s Michael Swift and Don Higbee would make the inaugural run of the Scrambler XP 1000 at the Parker 250 and come home with a second place competing as the only utility quad in the Expert Class.

The win was impressive given the unit was mostly stock except the wheels, tires and Flexx bars and ran with an axillary gas tank to minimize fuel ups.

The next Best in the Desert Race is the General Tire Mint 400, March 13-16, in Las Vegas, NV.

Tactical Black Yamaha VIKING EPS 4×4

0

Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., today introduced the latest version of the new Viking EPS Side-by-Side (SxS) vehicle, the Special Edition (SE) Tactical Black Viking.

Assembled in the U.S.A. and announced at the annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas, the new SE Viking combines an aggressive flat black painted appearance and popular accessories with classic Yamaha durability and off-road capabilities.

The new Tactical Black Viking EPS 4×4 boasts all of the category-leading features of Yamaha’s standard Viking SxS plus molded sun top, overfenders, mud flaps, an under-seat storage box, bed rail accessory mounts and exclusive black cast aluminum wheels.

The Yamaha Viking was first introduced last June when it set a new standard in the three-person multi-purpose SxS segment. Designed and engineered as a robust and high-capacity utility vehicle, the Viking combines Yamaha’s most powerful four-wheel drive engine to date with a comfortable and confidence-inspiring three-person cab, precision steering and class-leading handling.

Multi-Passenger

The vehicle’s distinctive features make it the most off-road capable vehicle in its class and the only one with true three-person seating capacity.

The Viking’s exclusive pass-through bucket seating features a unique off-set center position (set 5 degrees back) that improves comfort with maximum shoulder room for all three occupants.

This is the only vehicle in its class with three-point seat belts for everyone, plus headrests all around, adjustable handhold for both passengers and a textured floorboard with dedicated foot wells.

Its seating position even provides for more head room than competitive models without sacrificing critical ground clearance. All told, the Viking boasts the most comfortable and secure seating in its class.

Yamaha’s Most Powerful 4×4 Engine

Power comes from Yamaha’s strongest four-wheel drive engine to date – a 686cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke, SOHC, single-cylinder, 4-valve fuel-injected engine that provides peak performance at maximum capacity.

This durable engine has been optimized for working conditions with strong low-end torque while quick throttle response and smooth power delivery are maintained throughout the rev range.

Yamaha Fuel Injection delivers consistent starts and power even at elevation and in cold weather, and the 9.7 gallon fuel tank allows for long days in the field or on the trail.

A more powerful engine requires a more effective cooling system, and Yamaha has developed a system that keeps the Viking cool even during tough chores and at low speeds with optimum design, location and components that create the most efficient airflow through the large radiator.

Tactical Advantage: On-Command, Ultramatic and EPS

While the Viking’s 700cc-class engine makes more power than some larger 800cc-class machines, the vehicle’s handling and off-road capabilities truly set it apart.

Yamaha’s three-way On-Command system, featuring 2WD, 4WD and 4WD with differential lock, is a driver-controlled system with an automotive-type rotary dial selector.

This driver-controlled system gives the driver the control and confidence to lock in all four wheels based on the terrain – a significant benefit over other automated systems on competitive models.

Yamaha’s Ultramatic transmission with high, low and reverse has proven to be the industry’s most durable CVT system with dual speed gearing and an automatic centrifugal clutch that maintains constant belt tension for reduced wear and the industry’s most natural feeling all-wheel engine braking.

This reduced wear has contributed to Yamaha’s proven durability, and the engine braking gives the driver confidence especially on hills and in rough terrain.

The Viking’s optional Electric Power Steering (EPS) system provides the industry’s best balance of light feeling with positive feedback from the terrain. The system reads steering wheel torque, vehicle speed, On-Command setting and negative feedback to determine the appropriate amount of assist in any given situation.

Hauling, Towing and More

The Viking’s rear steel cargo bed was purpose-built for durability and convenience. Large enough to carry a fully loaded pallet, the assisted dump bed can pack up to 600 pounds of equipment and supplies while the standard two inch receiver hitch is rated to pull 1,500 pounds.

The Viking’s chassis also contributes to its off-road capability with nearly 12-inches of ground clearance at the lowest point, a full steel/composite smooth skid plate front to back and side to side, and an optimized frame with up-turned side rails allowing for smoother transitions over obstacles.

The Viking’s long-travel four-wheel independent suspension is balanced to provide a plush and comfortable ride with a quality damping feel in rough terrain all while carrying either a light or full load. The gas charged shocks help reach the delicate balance of damping and resistance with one or three people, fully loaded or empty.

The all-new Maxxis Big Horn 2.0 tires were designed specifically and exclusively for the Viking with maximum performance and durability. The new Big Horns provide an optimized balance of sidewall and tread center stiffness in a tire that delivers an excellent combination of traction, precise steering and comfort.

The Viking’s large diameter front and rear brake discs with dual piston calipers on all four wheels ensure good balance and power during braking – with or without cargo. The Viking also comes equipped with a mechanical parking disc brake.

Little extras are a big deal when breaking down is not an option. Things like marine-grade electrical connections and wiring, a sealed maintenance-free battery, digital meter and easily accessible and serviceable foam air filter and engine are built into the Viking to help owners stay on task or trail – and out of the shop.

The SE Tactical Black Viking 4×4 EPS will be available in the spring of 2014 with an MSRP of $13,749.

CAN-AM EARNS UTV PRO PODIUM AT BITD PARKER 250

0

Cory Sappington’s No. 1904 Desert Toyz / Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs side-by-side earned a third-place podium finish at the opening round of the 2014 Best In The Desert series this past weekend in Arizona.

“Once again, Cory Sappington and his Desert Toyz team did a great job in the desert, capturing a spot on the UTV Pro class podium at a very challenging race,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “We had a total of six teams entered, and although not all of them had the results they desired, we were pleased to put a Can-Am Maverick on the box at the opening round. It’s a long season and we just have to remain patient and look to improve at each round.”

The first round of the 2014 BITD racing series was held in rugged conditions outside of Parker, Ariz. Known as the roughest race of the season, the THR Motorsports Parker 250 challenged drivers to complete two laps and around 170 miles in the Arizona desert, which featured, whoops, desert washes, rock and thick dust. The top three finishing Pro class teams all crossed the finish line in less than four hours.

The Desert Toyz / Can-Am X-team — comprised of Sappington, Tyler Dixon, Justin Felker and William Grant – completed the two-lap race in a time of 3:53:18 to capture third overall. Racing with a stock engine and stock suspension components, Sappington’s team competed in the Can-Am Maverick 1000R they used to finish on the podium at the prestigious 2013 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 endurance race.

“[We had] No issues at all…a perfect race,” said Sappington. “This Maverick is the same car that we finished third in the Baja 1000, and all we did was change a belt, oil and filter. It’s amazing how tough this thing is.”

Murray Racing / Del Amo / Yoshimura / Can-Am decided to compete with two different Maverick vehicles at the 2014 BITD opener. Derek Murray and one co-pilot were in the No. 1917 Can-Am Maverick 1000 X rs, while his brother Jason drove the No. 1907 Can-Am Maverick MAX 1000R X rs.

Despite climbing from 13th to third place early in the race, Derek Murray ended up 10th overall in the class after overcoming a hard crash and repairs. The DragonFire Racing / Ride Now / Can-Am Maverick team also finished the race, capturing 13th in the UTV Pro ranks.

MY BACKYARD IS NOT YOUR TRAILHEAD

0

A little while back I wandered down into the woods behind my dad’s house to speak with some kids who were riding there.

At first they looked like they knew they shouldn’t be there, but what they didn’t know was I’d actually done the exact same thing when I was their age.

Riding in the woods is something I think young kids need to do more often. Encouraging a child to get outside in the open air and enjoy nature rather than sit in the house and play video games is something more parents should do.

If we criticize kids when they try to do what we all as adults say they should be doing it sends a confusing message. Maybe we should teach them how to respect property and how to take care of and protect it to ensure they’ll be able to ride there in the future.

If this sounds familiar it’s because it is. We want to raise responsible adults and this is the best place to start. Plus, this is the next generation of off-roaders and teaching them to respect where they ride stay with them their entire lives.

So what happened to the young boys riding behind Dads house? I simply explained to them I didn’t mind them riding there as long as they stayed on the trail and didn’t leave any trash around for me to pick up.

The look on their faces was priceless and they have been some of our best neighbors since!

Polaris Introduces Polaris POWER

0

Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) today announced the introduction of a new product line adjacency, Polaris POWER.

This introduction supports Polaris’ strategy to continue driving growth through adjacencies, bringing innovative Polaris products to an entirely new product space.

Three all-new digital inverter generators built for outdoor enthusiasts are the first products in the Polaris POWER line.

“Polaris continually explores adjacent product markets that complement our existing offerings and strengthen our brand,” said Steve Eastman, Polaris vice president of parts, garments and accessories. “Digital inverter generators provide a convenient and reliable power source for today’s outdoor lifestyle consumers. Our new family of Polaris POWER products offer rugged and portable designs which are perfectly suited to meet their power needs.”

Polaris POWER Digital Inverter Generators deliver clean power in a fuel-efficient, quiet, and compact package. These highly portable units are the perfect power source for camping, hunting, tailgating or anything outdoors. Furthermore, the generators provide value to a homeowner as an emergency back-up power source.

Polaris is offering consumers three models – the P1000i, the P2000i and the P3000i – delivering 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 watts of maximum AC output, respectively.

All models feature an economy throttle, which allows consumers to manage power output to maximize runtime. Across the family, these products are extremely quiet, running at a volume quieter than a typical conversation.

The P1000i and P2000i provide consumers parallel capable design, meaning multiple units can be linked to provide additional power, and are ideal for tasks such as powering a tailgate, running small appliances at campsites or powering work lights.

The P3000i is built to handle larger jobs, such as powering an RV air conditioner, with its high power output and 21 hours of runtime.

Polaris POWER Digital Inverter Generators will be available at select Polaris dealers beginning in December.

Polaris is a recognized leader in the powersports industry with annual 2012 sales of $3.2 billion.
