ETHICAL TRAIL USE

0

I recently had the opportunity to chat with some European ATV journalists about the trail development and maintenance in their country.

Turns out that over there, responsibility for trail maintenance rests in the laps of the people who ride them.

Could you imagine if it was just OUR responsibility to maintain trails and trail head facilities? Do you think anything would ever get done? What a concept.

Fact is that we play a huge role in responsible trail use. When your buddy drops his water bottle or tosses a snack wrapper onto the trail, the system begins to unravel and if you donÂ’t stop to pick it up or reprimand the culprit for doing it then youÂ’re equally responsible.

Companies like Yamaha and Polaris spend millions and have millions planned just for trail rehabilitation and maintenance grants and not many take advantage of that. It belongs to us so lets be sure to take care of it.

If you notice trash on a trail it only takes a second to stop and pick it up. It keeps the riding area looking nice and if everyone pitched in, it would set a great example for future generations.

The Europeans were so excited to talk about their trail programs and some people here just want to sweep it under the rug. LetÂ’s all work together to maintain a better riding area fro everyone.

Kawasaki Is Everywhere

0

It’s always impressive to see how much one company is involved in.

At the recent Kawasaki Dealer show in San Diego celebrities from all corners of the offroad industry joined the party to show their appreciation and bring notoriety to the brand.

Did you know Kawasaki not only has a motocross team, but it also sponsors a rodeo rider? Yep, J.B. Mauney just won the latest round of Professional Bull Riding in Grand Rapids, MI.

You might wonder how that ties into offroad though. Do you think bull riders go off-roading? Well sure they do and many of the spectators ride recreationally and use ATVs and side-x-sides on their ranches and farms.

If you thought bull riding was a long reach, how about Nascar? Kawasaki’s offroad public relations front man Jon Rall was once employed by Richard Childress and still maintains a great relationship with RCR to this day. In fact he also works with former RCR driver Clint Bowyer on many occasions and Kawasaki’s TERYX4 logo recently appeared on BowyerÂ’s PEAK antifreeze car.

Kawasaki is constantly bringing new and exciting celebrities to the fold and they support many celebrity charities too. The Matt Light Foundation (former New England Patriots player) holds an annual fall shootout involving many professional athletes and Kawasaki will be right in the middle showing off product and supporting this great event.

From manufacturing off road vehicles to being a part of various charities, Kawasaki has left its mark on the industry and the world.

ITP Racers Post Wins In Ohio and California

0

Team ITP ATV and side-by-side racers competed in two different series across the country the last weekend in September, and came away with two Pro class victories.

ATV Pro racer Adam McGill won round 11 of the Woods Extreme XC Racing series at Husted Hills in Amesville, Ohio. ITP-supported racers Kevin and Matt Shrive teamed up to win the Production 1000 Pro class at the AVE Racing PURE 250 in California City, Calif.

“No matter if it’s an ATV in the woods or a side-by-side in the desert, our racers once again proved that ITP tires offer an industry-leading design and real-world results,” said Pat McGuire, Public Relations / Race Support. “With five of the top six finishers and the overall class winner in the PURE 250 SxS Pro class, our tires more than speak for themselves in the desert.”

At round 11 of the WEXCR endurance series, ITP Pro Adam McGill (Lonestar / Precision / Custom Axis / Baldwin Racing) won the Adult Quad Pro class using ITP tires.

McGill, who also competes for ITP TIres in the Grand National Country Series, didn’t start off so hot at Husted Hills, finishing the first lap in eighth place. However, he took the lead on lap two and kept pouring it on.

Two sub 11-minute times on laps three and four extended his lead even more. In fact, McGill recorded the fastest lap on the final eight laps of the nine-lap race to win the class and the ATV overall.

He won the overall and class by more than five minutes. He has seven wins and eight total podiums in the nine WEXCR rounds he has attended in 2013.

Another ITP-backed WEXCR competitor, Mark Batson, won his class in Ohio. He led every lap and won Quad Vet 30+ class for the sixth consecutive race. Batson, who finished the Husted Hills event 10th in the overall quad results, has eight class wins this year.

ITP racers Kevin and Matt Shrive won the Production 1000 Pro class and took second in the SxS overall standings at the 2013 PURE 250 race held northeast of Los Angeles.

The Shrives completed six laps in a time of 6:05:37 to win their class. They were in fifth place after lap two, but rallied to move into the top three on lap later. By the end of lap four, they took over the class lead and held it all the way to finish line.

ITP racers took five of the top six finishing positions in the SxS Pro class. Logan Gastel ended up third in the class and joined the Shrives on the podium.

The other racers to earn top-five finishers were Branden Sims (fourth) and Brian Bush (fifth). Sims led the first three laps before falling to fourth.

Bush was in ninth after the first lap, but patiently picked off a few riders to earn his top-five finish. Murray Racing / ITP driver Aaron Juarez, who was fourth after lap five, ended up sixth.

In business for more than 30 years, ITP has become the world’s #1 ATV/UTV aftermarket tire and wheel source. ITP utilizes its experienced staff of engineers, designers and technicians at its two American tire facilities in Clinton, Tenn., and Jackson, Tenn., to develop award-winning tire-and-wheel designs for virtually all ATVs and side-by-side vehicles. Numerous outlets distribute ITP tires across the United States and in more than 25 countries worldwide.

CAN-AM MAVERICK PILOTS SWEEP WEXCR PODIUM

0

Can-Am side-by-side racers took the top four spots in UTV 1 Open class results at Round 5 of the Woods Extreme XC Racing series in Amesville, Ohio. Maverick 1000R pilot Treavis Poynter earned his first overall and class win of the season.

First-time Maverick 1000R racer Jim McKay also won both the SxS overall and Production 1000 Sportsman class at the DWT PURE 250 event in California City, Calif. Can-Am ATV racers also participated in round 11 of the New England ATV Motocross series, earning 15 total podium finishes.

“I was pleased to learn that Can-Am Maverick racers won two growing race series this past weekend. We had the top four finishers at the WEXCR event, which clearly proves the Can-Am Maverick side-by-side is becoming the vehicle to own for cross-country racing” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “To hear Jim McKay won the PURE 250 overall his first time competing with his Maverick 1000R is great because it proves BRP offers a true high-performance side-by-side purpose built for racing, no matter the environment.”

WEXCR

Round 11 of the WEXCR series in Ohio, also served as round five of the UTV series. Can-Am had several side-by-side racers competing in the one-hour, UTV 1 Open class Sunday, Sept. 29. Maverick 1000R pilot Treavis Poynter and co-pilot Lindsay Hendershot of Team Crash Addict / Performance East / Can-Am took the win.

Poynter was in third place after the first three laps, but grabbed the lead after the racer leader, JB Off-Road / Can-Am Maverick 1000R pilot Kyle Chaney, dropped out. Thanks in part to a sub eight-minute lap time on lap four, Poynter extended his lead all the way to finish for his first win of 2013.

Team Hendershot / Can-Am held the lead after lap one, but dropped back to second place on lap two. They were the only team to break the nine-minute mark on the final lap and ended up second, just seven seconds behind Poynter. Team Tigercat (Maverick 1000R) edged Austin Seelig’s Team 1-Fourty-4 (Commander 1000) for third overall in the class.

Can-Am Outlander 800R racer Bryan Buckhannon earned a third-place podium finish in the Adult Quad Open A class. For more info on the WEXCR series, visit www.wexcr.com.

PURE 250

The DWT PURE Deep Into The Night 250, presented by SxSPerformance.com, was held Sept. 27-29 in California. Racer Jim McKay, who was competing for the first time behind the wheel of the Maverick he bought himself for Christmas, won the PURE 250 Production 1000 Sportsman class and took home the SxS overall in California City.

McKay completed all six laps in a time of 6:04:33. He was in fourth place after lap one. However, McKay took over the race lead on lap four and stayed on the gas to win his class and beat 15 other racers from four total classes to the finish line.

“Our Maverick is completely stock aside from the safety components needed for the race,” said McKay. “From day one, I’ve been extremely pleased with the durability and performance of the Maverick. As we found out on Saturday, there isn’t much needed to compete with all the extremely modified SxSs that we were up against.”

Can-Am Commander pilot Logan Gastel finished third in the Production 1000 Pro class. Murray Racing / Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs racer Aaron Juarez finished sixth. For more information about the PURE series, please visit www.averacing.com.

NEATV-MX

Can-Am DS 450 ATV racers won three classes and earned 15 total class podium finishes at round 11 of the NEATV-MX series at MX101 in Epping, N.H. Can-Am Pros Travis Moore, Matheiu Deroy and Keven Vachon competed in the Pro class. Moore earned second overall with a 3-2 moto scorecard, while Deroy was third and Vachon sixth. Moore also scored a third-place podium finish in the Pro-Am class.

In the amateur ranks, Can-Am DS 450 racers won three classes and earned 12 additional podium finishes, which included a sweep in the College Boy class. Victories went to Roy Lampron (40+), Jake Bradway (4-Stroke A) and Jake Chamberland (College Boy). The season finale of NEATV-MX series is Oct. 12-13, at AK Farms in Modena, N.Y.

Yamaha Volunteers Complete OHV Project

0

Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., volunteers completed a three-year project at one of the nation’s most popular multi-use off-highway vehicle (OHV) staging areas located in the San Bernardino National Forest (SBNF).

As part of the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative and with support of the Southern California Mountains Foundation’s (SCMF) OHV program, volunteers gathered recently for a final round of planting, cleaning and maintaining the popular Cactus Flats staging area and surrounding trails.

This was the final project in a three-year commitment by Yamaha to help restore Cactus Flats and save the staging area from misuse and erosion. Thanks to the combined efforts and critical work done by the SCMF and SBNF – and including the Yamaha volunteer projects – Cactus Flats is no longer at risk and is back to its old self as one of the premier staging areas in the forest.

More than 60 volunteers, comprised of Yamaha employees and their family and friends, along with members of the SCMF, contributed more than 325 hours of volunteer service on Sunday, September 22.

Activities to improve the area included planting and watering 300 native seedlings. Cactus Flats and its surrounding trails are a popular location hosting thousands off-road enthusiasts, hikers and mountain bikers each year.

“The Mountains Foundation and San Bernardino National Forest have been great partners of Yamaha’s OHV Access Initiative, helping shape our grassroots efforts locally and across the country,” said Mike Martinez, Yamaha’s ATV/SxS Vice President. “The Access Initiative continues to improve riding areas and opportunities thanks to volunteers and the hundreds of GRANTs and more than $2 million awarded. Yamaha will continue this work promoting safe, responsible riding and open, sustainable riding areas, and we encourage riding groups to use our program to support their local efforts.”

Over the past six years, Yamaha volunteers have restored more than 12 acres of land in the San Bernardino National Forest. Work has included the Cactus Flats project and planting 3,600 native seedlings through SBNFA’s Forest Aid initiative, a partnership with TreePeople and the U.S. Forest Service in one of the largest volunteer-led restoration projects in Southern California addressing the burn areas from the 2003 and 2007 wildfires.

“Yamaha is a valued partner of the Mountains Foundation helping to support our OHV program and many of the 2.4 million visitors who come to the mountains each year,” said Sarah Miggins, executive director of the Southern California Mountains Foundation. “For more than six years, Yamaha volunteers have made a real impact on the San Bernardino National Forest completing projects from the Big Bear area across the mountains to Lake Arrowhead.”

The Yamaha OHV Access Initiative is the industry leader in Guaranteeing Responsible Access to our NationÂ’s Trails (GRANTs). Through this program, Yamaha has directly and indirectly supported thousands of miles of trails, maintained and rehabilitated countless riding areas, improved staging areas, built bridges over fish-bearing streams and partnered with local riding communities across the country to improve the OHV experience.

Each quarter, Yamaha accepts applications from non-profit or tax-exempt organizations including OHV riding clubs and associations, national, state and local public land use agencies and other members of the OHV community in the United States. A committee then reviews each application and awards GRANTs to deserving projects.

Examples of appropriate projects for GRANTs include, but are not limited to:

– Trail development, restoration and maintenance
– Trail signage and map production
– Staging area construction, renovation and maintenance
– Land stewardship, trail safety and education

Updated guidelines, an application form and information on the OHV Access Initiative are available here. For specific questions about the OHV Access Initiative, call Yamaha’s dedicated OHV Access Initiative Hotline at 1-877-OHV-TRAIL (877-648-8724) or write to: Yamaha OHV Access Initiative Review Committee, 6555 Katella Avenue, Cypress, CA 90630-5101.

CRAZY IDEAS SHAPE OUR INDUSTRY

0

What’s the most outrageous idea you’ve ever thought of? How many times have you thought about what you’d buy if you won the lottery or struck it rich? You wouldn’t be alone if you have.

Flight interests me and yet I’ve never pursued learning how to pilot a plane. I recently invested in a few remote control flying cameras to get aerial photography and when I watch the footage and see the photos I get a rush just like I was the one in the air.

Look at today’s standards for a side-x-side. Someone actually believed that putting trophy truck suspension travel and an explosively powerful engine into a 2-passenger UTV would appeal to powersports enthusiasts and that idea ended up kickstarting our industry back in the right direction. Who knew, right?!

I’ve made custom tools to suit particular jobs that an ATV or SXS mechanic would need at one point or another and yet never pursued manufacturing or patenting these tools.

Maybe I think it’s crazy that I could build a bank account around their success or that other mechanics would find them useful. One crazy idea after another and it seems I keep mine to myself so people won’t think I’m crazy. How ironic.

Wealth is built over many years of hard work, but it usually starts with one crazy idea that gets fearlessly put into action. So just how crazy are you?

More 50-Inch SXS Scuttle

0

There’s no doubt Polaris has more stuff up its sleeve for this season.

It doesn’t take much insight to assume the all-new and quite frankly amazing RZR 1000 XP will get stretched into a four-placer shortly. In fact we think that’s a done deal.

However, here’s a few more twists in the road. What about a move to a 50 inch wide RZR powered by the de-tuned Ranger XP 900 65 HP twin mounted exactly the same way as the 570?

Polaris retired its 500cc mill found in the Ranger and Classis Sportsman line only to be upgraded with its 570 ProStar mill. Could we see the 800 replaced by this de-tuned ProStar 900 next?

Hmm?

Triton Trailers CH Series Flat Deck

0

What’s the number one problem with owning a full size side-x-side or one that you’ve modified with a lift kit? Transporting it to your riding location. That is unless you got yourself a flat deck trailer likes ours from Triton.

Our Triton CH Series aluminum deck trailer tops our list as the best side-x-side and ATV trailer we’ve ever owned.

Constructed from a fully welded, all aluminum alloy frame, Triton’s CH series is offered in lengths of 18, 20 and 22 feet. These heavy-duty, lightweight deck haulers have a 7500-pound gross vehicle weight rating and are capable of load capacities up to 6020 pounds!

Loading is simplified by a folding rear beaver tail and detachable ramps for side loading, which double as stone guards when transporting.

Stabilizer jacks and the low approach angle ramps not only make loading easy, but are also versatile for lower height vehicles such as cars and golf carts.

In addition to the 4 adjustable heavy-duty D-Rings, 3/8″ Quickslide channels are integrated into the frame and deck for standard tie-downs and optional kits. Plus, like all other Triton trailers, top end build quality is matched with smooth hauling Four Cord Rubber Torsion Axles, molded wire harness, sealed and shockproof lights mounted in rubber grommets and an awesome line of accessories.

For more information on the CH series and Triton’s full line of trailers visit tritontrailers.com.

Another New Mill From Polaris?

0

Here’s more Polaris scuttle. With the re-invention of the Classic Sportsman powered by a 570 mill the premium priced and higher tech Sportsman 550 XP may appear little light on cubes.

So how can Polaris add sizzle to the XP to motivate shoppers to open their wallets? What about a de-bored Sportsman XP 850 HO mill at 600cc’s to replace the 550 XP?

Can-Am does a 500 twin so wouldn’t a 600 twin from Polaris be more in-your-face? This would make the extra jing for the Sportsman XP 550 against the ridiculously low priced Classic 570 justifiable.

Just sayin…

CAN-AM RACERS EARN VICTORIES ACROSS NORTH AMERICA

0

Can-Am ATV and side-by-side racers competed in numerous racing series in North America and Europe, coming away with several wins and four individual championships. Zac Zakowski won two titles in the Iowa Short Course Series.

Two DS 450 racers also won championships. Keven Vachon won the Courses VTT Pro 450 class Canadian championship and Jeremie Warnia won the European Quad Motocross Championship in France.

“Can-Am racers have had a successful season throughout the world. Recently, our racers have earned many victories and several championships,” said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. “Jeremie Warnia, Keven Vachon and Zac Zakowski earning championships proves that Can-Am offers excellent, race-proven vehicles.”

Championships

Round six of the European Motocross Championship series was recently held in Dardon Gueugnon, France. Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 Pro Jeremie Warnia won the EMX Quad championship for the second consecutive season with a dominant performance. Warnia, who won the 2011 WORCS Pro ATV Championship, had built a huge points lead heading into round six and secured the title with a convincing 1-1 sweep.

Can-Am DS 450 Pro Keven Vachon wrapped up the Courses VTT ATV Pro class title with second-place podium finish at round seven held in Saint-Marcel, Quebec. Vachon earned seven podiums and had four wins in 2013. Fellow DS 450 Pro Mathieu Deroy won round seven and finished runner-up to Vachon for the championship.

At round three of the Iowa Short Course Series, held in Chariton, Iowa, Zakowski Motorsports / Can-Am racer Zac Zakowski won both his ATV and side-by-side classes. The victories earned Zakowski both class championships, one on his Can-Am Outlander 4×4 and the other in his Can-Am Commander 1000 side-by-side.

“I’ve been working really hard over the years to collect some championships on my Can-Am machines,” said Zakowski. “It feels good to take home a double championship this year.”

NEATV-MX

Can-Am DS 450 Pro Josh Creamer (BCS Performance) won both the Pro and Pro-Am classes with 1-1 moto sweeps at round 10 of the NEATV-MX series in Minot, Maine. He was joined on both podiums by current Pro and Pro-Am class points leader and fellow DS 450 pilot Travis Moore, who finished third in both classes. In all, Can-Am DS 450 racers won six classes and earned 15 total podiums at round 10. The next round of NEATV-MX is scheduled for Sept. 28-29, at MX101 Moto-X Park in Epping, N.H.

WORCS

Dave Martinez (Murray Racing / Yoshimura / Can-Am) was the top finishing Maverick 1000R X rs pilot, earning fourth overall in the SxS Pro Production class, at round eight of WORCS in Milford, Calif. Can-Am racers Gilbert Flores (Motoworks), James Hill (Team IMG) Pablo Veglia (Del Amo Motorsports) finished fifth through seventh, respectively. Veglia currently leads Hill by one point for third place in the class standings heading into the finale.

Dillon Zimmerman (GPS Off-Road) earned fourth place in the ATV Pro class on his Can-Am DS 450. The final WORCS event is scheduled for Oct. 11-13, in Primm, Nev.

FMSQ

Can-Am Maverick 1000R pilot Charles-Antoine Villeneuve won the SxS class at round nine of the Provincial Endurocross circuit of the FMSQ series in Victoriaville, Quebec, Canada.

MWXC

Can-Am Maverick 1000R pilot Matt Rowell won the 801cc+ class at round 10 of the Midwest Cross Country Racing series in Martinsville, Ind. It was RowellÂ’s second straight win and third podium finish in three rounds of racing with the Maverick 1000R.

AWRCS 7

In its Can-Am Maverick 1000R, Team Hendershot Performance won round seven of the American Woods Racing Championship Series in Clintonville, Pa. The Hendershot team beat 17 other side-by-side vehicles to the finish line despite starting from row two.

“We now have the points lead with only one SxS round to go,” said Larry Hendershot. “We believe it made a big statement that the Can-Am Maverick is the machine to beat.”
