MAVERICK PILOT CHANEY WINS UTV RALLY RAID RACE

0

Team JB Off Road Racing / Can-Am pilot Kyle Chaney won the 2013 UTV Rally Raid Northern Series opening event in Oliver Springs, Tenn., earning the first official victory in organized competition with the new Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs side-by-side vehicle.

Chaney pulled a commanding lead over the field of more than 30 entries to win not only the series’ premier unlimited C class, but also the overall event victory at the four-hour day / night race held at Windrock Park.

“We’re thrilled to have Kyle Chaney race the Can-Am Maverick 1000R side-by-side vehicle to victory in the growing UTV Rally Raid series. He definitely showcased the capabilities of the essentially stock Maverick 1000R X rs in the Tennessee mountains during this rugged four-hour event,” said Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “Despite drastically changing weather and track conditions throughout the grueling endurance race, Chaney used the abilities of the Can-Am Maverick to his advantage and distanced himself from the rest of the pack at the UTV Rally Raid Northern Series opener. This was a very big victory for Kyle, the Can-Am Maverick and BRP and we will build upon this success as the season progresses.”

Thirty-three side-by-side vehicles started the four-hour endurance event just before sunset on an already wet eight-mile course. However, a few hours into the race, as darkness fell upon the surrounding mountains, temperatures dropped, snow fell and standing water turned to ice.

Chaney, who started from the fourth row, took full advantage of the Maverick 1000R X rs vehicle’s performance and handling to work his way through the pack of side by sides ahead of him to take over the Class C (unlimited) lead.

He then took the overall race lead near the latter portion of the event and eventually won by more than six minutes, completing 15 laps on the course. It was the first competitive victory for Chaney and the 101-horsepower 2013 Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs.

“The new Can-Am Maverick performed extremely well for me the entire four hours of the race. The handling is incredible,” said Chaney.
“Despite the mud and snow, the Maverick worked really great in all the changing conditions that the course could throw at it.”

The UTV Rally Raid event and series served as a perfect tune-up for Chaney and the Maverick 1000R as they prepare for the 2013 Grand National Cross Country series. Chaney and the Maverick will make their GNCC series debut March 16, in Washington, Ga.

Four other Can-Am side-by-side vehicles also competed in Tennessee. White Racing put its Can-Am Commander on the podium in the Class B ranks, finishing third, and took 12th overall.

The UTV Rally Raid is a four-hour endurance racing series for side-by-side vehicles promoted by Georgia-based Quantum Racing Inc. The series is comprised of a two regional (North and South) 10-race schedules that run from February through December at Windrock Park in Tennessee and Alabama’s Stony Lonesome OHV Park. Still Running, Well Like A Deere

0

Most people recognize John Deere for its tractors, but it was a plow that put the company’s name in the history books.

In 1837 a blacksmith in Grand Detour Illinois named John Deere came up with a product to plow through the earth better.

At the time he probably had no idea how much farmers and construction crew everywhere would come to rely on products with his name on them for their quality engineering.

John Deere all-terrain utility vehicles were introduced in 1987 with the three and five-wheeled AMT. This was replaced just five years later with what we now know as the Gator line. These vehicles were built for more productivity and grounds keeping than pure sport riding.

John Deere jumped into the off-road pure sport side-x-side market last season with its RSX850i. With just a hint of utility remaining in its bloodline, the RSX850i made its way into a swiftly growing segment of adventure off-roading.

It’s exciting to see so many diverse companies developing SXS utility and off road adventure models in the last few years. Bringing families together to enjoy the outdoors is what we live for and we hope this trend continues.

2-STROKES vs. 4-STROKES

0

From the many questions and quotes we see online it’s clear some people may not understand the difference is between a 2-stroke and a 4-stroke engine.

It’s not a matter of life or death to know or not, but it does help to be able to distinguish between the two engine types and know a little more about what’s idling under your seat. So here is the simple explanation of the differences.

2-stroke engines have a power cycle every time the piston moves up and down inside the cylinder. The first stroke includes intake and compression of fuel and air which forces the fuel and air mixture up the transfer tube to the intake port and into the combustion chamber. The second stroke includes the combustion of that fuel and air and its exhaust.

The 4-stroke engine essentially follows this same process except it is taking two rotations of the crank to complete all four cycles instead of just one. The four cycles include: Intake of the fuel and air mixture on the down stroke, which opens the intake valve to let the air and fuel mixture into the combustion chamber, compression of the air and fuel mixture as the piston moves up inside the cylinder, then combustion of the mixture which forces the piston down inside the cylinder and then finally the exhaust valves are opening and the fumes are forced out of the combustion chamber on the up-stroke.

Many ATV enthusiasts remember the distinct sound of the late eighties Honda 250r ATV as it was quite possibly the hottest race ride from the nineties and on into the mid 2000 cross-country and ATV motocross scene.

The ding, ding, ding of the motor and the smell of mixed race gas coupled with awesomely explosive power was something that attracted many to the sport. Eventually though the ringing of the two banger would be replaced by the BRAAAP of the four stroke motor.

There are benefits to each of these mills and it is a hot topic in the powersports industry. At least now instead of replaying last night’s episode of Duck Dynasty in your head you’ll be able to stay involved in the conversation next time your resident gear head starts spouting off.

Launch of Kolpin Cabs at 2013 Indy Dealer Show

Kolpin Powersports is launching a new cab enclosure system that combines incredible visibility and maximum protection from the elements with head-turning style.

The scratch-resistant qualities inherent in tempered glass and other advanced materials used in the construction will afford UTV dealers and customers alike a premium sales value.

Kolpin will be selling the all-new cabs on a new website, www.kolpincabs.com and also through partnering Distributor in the United States, Western Power Sports, to dealers in the Power Sports channel.

The doors and windshield are comprised of crystal-clear automotive glass and double-hard-coated advanced Polycarbonate with a steel understructure maximizing the view for operating implements and navigating rough terrain—visibility other cabs can’t offer.

Kolpin Cabs make everything from crossing a frozen lake to running down trails more comfortable! Part of the revolutionary advantage of the Kolpin system is their incredibly easy installation.

Panels and doors are computer designed for each UTV model with a laser-accurate, draft-proof fit. Kolpin Cabs are easy to assemble and components can later be removed or re-installed in minutes, not hours—guaranteed! Riders can receive a kit, install it and get to work or play the same day!

In addition to their durable, transparent design and easy installation, Kolpin Cabs have other incredible features combined in a clean package that is guaranteed to thrill equally in the woods or on the showroom floor.

The windshields are comprised of incredibly tough automotive safety glass. Holes are pre-drilled and plugged for addition of an optional windshield wiper and washer kit.

The shield tilts outward on heavy-duty gas shocks and can also be propped open with built-in support brackets. The zinc-plated and powder-coated metal roof installs quickly and includes sound-absorbing insulation. The rear panel is comprised of tempered glass.

The combination safety glass/ double-hard-coated polycarbonate doors install into the stock mounts on the vehicle chassis and pivot 180 degrees for ultimate accessibility. A best-in-class two-stage door latch keeps occupants secure and the keyed locking feature will help UTV owners rest easier when they’re not riding.

An optional cab heater/defroster with a three-speed fan is also available. The Kolpin system is infused with the latest materials and geometries to ensure lighter weight and maintain vehicle stability while retaining the strength needed for years of service and a high trade-in value.

All-new Kolpin Cabs can be installed to upgrade Polaris Ranger models from years 2009 through 2013, including the 2013 Ranger 900 XP. Kolpin offers the ultra-clean kits for all Can-Am Commanders manufactured to date. Cabs are also available for Yamaha Rhinos, Honda Big Reds, and the Kawasaki Mule 4010 and 6010.

Full service and support will be available via Kolpin dealers nationwide the moment the cabs land on showrooms. Seeing is believing.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

0

Not all aftermarket accessory parts are created equal. If you search the Internet for a part or accessory for your ATV or SXS and you only search for the lowest price, you might be cheating yourself in more ways than one.

Major manufacturers tend to build quality products for their off road vehicles and if you want a part that will last, work well and fit your vehicle correctly, it pays to search within their accessory catalogs first.

Companies such as Can-Am have many high quality parts that have been tested and proven to last. When I buy a product, whether it’s a roof, set of bumpers or even something as simple as a winch mount I look to see what the manufacturer of the vehicle offers first because I know it will fit right and install with usually very little effort.

A friend recently purchased a universal top for his side-by-side and bragged about the smoking deal he got. After riding through a few trails he noticed the top tearing away from its mounts because the plastic was paper-thin and the mounts were so small that it couldn’t handle the strain of a few small branches. After tearing it off to dispose of it he realized he was out $125 and still needed a top for his ride.

When considering what you’re paying for, the price should include a return policy, warranty information and shipping costs because if you aren’t satisfied with the part and get stuck with it because you bought bargain bin, bottom shelf products then how much did that piece really cost you?

CAN-AM’S JOSH FREDERICK EARNS PODIUMS AT WORCS

0

Team Motoworks / Can-Am Pro Josh Frederick piloted his Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs side-by-side vehicle to a third-place podium finish and his DS 450 ATV to second overall at the second round of the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) this past weekend in Primm, Nevada. Fellow SxS Pro Production side-by-side class and Can-Am Maverick racer Pablo Veglia finished fifth.

“We were very pleased with how round two turned out, having Josh Frederick reach both Pro class podiums with the Maverick and DS 450. I was definitely happy with how Josh raced and finished with the Maverick 1000R X rs in just his second WORCS event. Coming from the fifth row at the start, and as far back as 20th, to earn a top-three finish shows just how skilled both he and the Maverick are,” said Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “To have two of the five Maverick side-by-side vehicles entered, finish in the top five of the highly competitive Pro Production 1000 class is great and definitely the momentum that we were looking for which we can build upon.”

For Frederick and the Maverick 1000R, round two, held at Buffalo Bill’s, just outside of Las Vegas, served as redemption for an unlucky series opener a few weeks prior when he failed to finish.

In Primm, Frederick was determined to move forward from his fifth-row starting spot during the six-lap Pro race. After lap one, Frederick was in 15th, but on the move. One lap later he had picked off five racers and cracked the top 10. By the fourth lap, the Nevada resident had pushed his Maverick 1000R X rs to fourth overall.

He cracked into the top three on lap five and held it all the way to the finish for the first-ever WORCS podium finish for the new Can-Am Maverick. Frederick had a similar climb in the Pro ATV class, as he came from eighth place to eventually put his Motoworks-tuned DS 450 on the podium.

“There are some things we need to work on, but to be able to run up front with a brand new vehicle is great. We’ll just keep working on the Maverick and get better and better,” said Frederick. “The DS 450 was working awesome. I have to give it up to my whole team. I am happy with second place.”

Of the four remaining Can-Am Maverick 1000R side-by-sides in the SxS Pro Production, three finished in the top 15. Veglia (Team Del Amo Motorsports / Can-Am) earned fifth, battling back from 17th place after lap one. James Hill and Johnny Leach finished 12th and 13th, respectively with their Can-Am race vehicles.

Two other Can-Am-mounted racers competed in the ATV Pro class along with Frederick, who currently sits third in the class points standings.

Finishing seventh aboard his GPS / Can-Am DS 450 was Pro class rookie Collins Webster. His teammate, Dillon Zimmerman, had two mechanical issues and will look to rebound at round three, March 22-24, in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

STI ADDS NEW FINISHES FOR HD2se & HD BEADLOCK

0

STI Tire & Wheel has gone to the dark side with the addition of dramatic black finishes on two HD Alloy wheel models.

This expansion gives ATV and UTV owners even more customization choices, at the same unbeatable bang for the buck the entire HD Alloy line is known for.

STI’s popular HD2se wheel now sports a dazzling Gloss Black finish, joining its Matte Black/Machined and Gloss Black/Machined siblings in the HD2 inventory.

This new Gloss Black HD2se is available in 12×7, 14×7 and 15×7 sizes. Like all HD2 wheels, it is protected by a lifetime structural warranty.

This is due in large part to the HD Alloy’s unique inner and outer heavy-duty wheel lip reinforcement and as with every STI HD Alloy wheel, this model comes with a new, matching, low profile center cap.

Also slipping into stealth fighter mode is the HD Beadlock line, thanks to the addition of a Matte Black option to go along with existing gunmetal gray Slik-Kote and Bright Machined finishes.

This wheel features a unique integral-mount beadlock ring, which is quick to install, adds considerable strength to the outer lip, and is engineered to reduce debris buildup. Most importantly, the ring helps ensure the tire bead stays on the wheel, even when using lower pressures and applying high side loading.

HD Beadlocks also utilize an even thicker, stronger reinforced “rock crusher” inner bead lip, making these the most rugged wheels available.

The STI HD Beadlock is offered in 12×7 and 14×7 sizes, value-priced for budget-minded enthusiasts who want to step up to the performance benefits of a beadlock wheel.

These sultry new STI HD Alloy wheels are available at finer ATV/UTV dealers everywhere. For more information, visit stitireandwheel.com.

Live To Ride Another Day

0

There are a couple of things everyone should think of when riding with friends.

What some riders might not know is that your ATV doesn’t care who you are or who you think you are or even what you think you can do. It was made to do a task and if pushed too far will eventually expose your weaknesses.

Just a few nights ago I watched a reality TV show that featured a guy riding his TRX 250 into oncoming traffic as the producers raced alongside noting the top speed of his trusty ATV. Luckily for him he didn’t get hurt, but his luck will eventually run out.

Keep in mind that your friends want to have a good ride as well and contrary to the fact that they’ll do it, they do not want to have to haul you to the hospital.

The second thing to remember is that they probably wish you’d ride responsibly rather than try to showcase just how awesome you think you are.

Know this: show-offs eventually find themselves alone because no one wants to assume the risk of being around them.

Guthrie Wins 4th King of the Hammers with RZR XP

0

Since its original debut in 2008, the King of the Hammers (KOH) race has been deemed the toughest off-road race in the world.

This year’s course of 115-miles of open desert racing and huge rock trails proved to be the most-difficult course yet. So hard, that Race Organizer, Dave Cole didn’t think a UTV could do it.

When the dust settled only three of the 35 UTVs entered would prove Cole wrong, all beingRZR XP 900s! Mitch Guthrie and his co-driver Mitch Guthrie Jr., who has won four KOH races and took second once, would take the checkered flag with his Holz Racing RZR XP 900, with Jon Crowley and Blake Van de Loo, in their Jagged X-supported RZR XP 900 taking second, and Matt Enochs in the Team Nasty RZR would finish third.

Thirty-five UTVs lined up at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning to try to conquer one of the toughest KOH courses to date in eight hours or less.

Brandon Sims in his RZR XP 900 would get the early lead but succumb to the toughness of the course, along with 31 other racers throughout the race, leaving Racers Guthrie, Crowley and Enochs to duke it out for the win.

Guthrie finished the race in 7 hours, 51 minutes and 52 seconds, running the last four rock trails and 30 miles of desert with no brakes! Crowley finished only 16 seconds behind him! Enochs would finish with only five minutes left showing the grit and durability of the RZR XP 900 with a clean sweep of this year’s King of the Hammers!
