BEST IN CLASS: Best 2-Up ATV

0

WINNER: Can-Am Outlander Max 800 G2

2012 is a big year for Can-Am. Here’s why: It’s arguable Can-Am invented the 2-up ATV and its undeniable Can-Am has been the dominant player in this growing segment.

The past few years other OEMs have been getting in on the action and building some very good 2-passenger ATVs. For 2013 Can-am has completely re-invented its Max chassis, suspension and geometry (with the exception of the 400 Max).

The new G2 Max presents radically altered twin trailing arm geometry producing a substantially more plush rear suspension and freedom from the former platform’s rear wheel hop on deceleration and on downhills.

The Max benefits from its extended wheelbase to get the passenger’s weight in front of the rear wheels’ centerline. Plushness is so impressive we were completely shocked how well the Can-Am G2 Max handles terrain.

Good ride is paramount when talking about a 2-upper, however there’s more. Handling afforded by the all-new anti-dive dual A-arm IFS up front is superb.

Surprisingly, we could ride trails as fast, in more comfort, on a G2 Max than we could on the single passenger G2!

Although the 1000 rocks like nothing on Earth, we found the smooth and linear 800 to have as much power as any sane rider could ever need.

RUNNERS-UP: Polaris Sportsman XP 850HO Touring & Arctic Cat TRV 700 XT

A couple of years ago Polaris re-invented its Sportsman Touring and made it into the Sportsman XP Touring. We appropriately anointed this new platform as Best In Class in this important segment.

The 850’s longitudinal engine placement makes the riders perch incredibly narrow providing a measure of improved comfort that cannot be ignored.

Polaris totally aces the ergonomics factor with its narrow rider and passenger footrests and amps up comfort with a fully suspended passenger seat. It is a superb riding and handling ATV with unequalled 2-up ergonomics.

Arctic Cat’s TRV offers exactly what 2-up riders like. The lighter but way-torquey 700 EFI single is our preference for two and the TRV’s 4-wheel drive system is easy to operate and very effective.

Great ground clearance assists with traction. The XT is nicely equipped with great looking aluminum wheels, plush accommodation and the passenger seat is removable to afford more carrying space for single passenger riding.

WHY WORK IN THE OFFROAD INDUSTRY?

0

Someone recently asked me why I like to work in the offroad industry. After a few moments my answer was easy – passion. I believe if you love what you do for a living you’ll never have to work a day in your life.

Maybe itÂ’s the adventure or the excitement of exploring new trails that makes me feel alive, but when I get outside in the trails I feel as if I could go anywhere and conquer anything in front of me.

IÂ’m regularly reminded that this is a dream job for many and although I do love the work and its perks, itÂ’s still a job that I take seriously and often requires many hours of research and legwork to make a story worth reading. Fact is there are times when thereÂ’s a lot less riding going on and a lot more time spent sitting at my desk.

One thingÂ’s for sure; I take pride in knowing I can share incredible new products and destinations as well as sharing my experiences on new ATVs and side-x-sides offered by the manufacturers. Getting honest seat-of-the-pants information out to fellow consumers makes me feel like IÂ’m helping someone get the best experience possible.

A job in the offroad industry is all about passion and almost everyone you run into in this industry will tell you this is exactly where he or she wants to be.

MAVERICK RACERS FINISH 1-2 AT LOORS OPENER

Steve Beilman and Wayne Matlock piloted their virtually stock Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs side-by-side vehicles to a 1-2 finish in the UTV Open class at round one of the 2013 Lucas Oil Off Road Series (LOORS) at Glen Helen Raceway in Southern California.

In Texas, Louis Powersports / Can-Am DS 450 Pro Cody Miller won both the Open Expert (Pro) and Pro-Am classes at round one of the Dockside Marine Texhoma Quad Racing Association (TQRA) series.

“It’s great to have off-road racing veterans like Wayne Matlock and Steve Beilman behind the wheel of the new Maverick 1000R X rs and even better to have them put it on the LOORS podium. These guys basically had stock vehicles, sans the cage and doors, yet still dominated the UTV Open class at round one,” said Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “Their genuine excitement about the Maverick, along with their recent racing success is not only contagious, but it also reinforces that fact that our all-new high-performance side-by-side vehicle is purpose-built to win races.”

Despite limited practice time, Matlock qualified first in the UTV Open class, while Beilman secured the third spot on the line. At the start of the main event, a modified competitive vehicle edged Matlock for the holeshot, but both he and Beilman locked in behind the leader and, by lap two, were already pressuring him for the lead.

Matlock was on rear bumper waiting for a time to pass, but was hampered when the leader slowed over a jump. Beilman took advantage of the leader’s pause and pinned it over a tabletop jump and literally leapt to the front, passing both the leader and Matlock. From there, Beilman maintained a steady pace and tried to extend his lead.

Matlock, who tired of following the second-place racer, made his move and made a timely pass after the finish line jump at the start of the fourth lap. MatlockÂ’s pass put the Maverick pilots in first and second with several laps remaining.

However, a mandatory caution allowed Matlock to reel in Beilman and during the final six laps the two racers put on a show, as they were bumper-to-bumper to the finish line. At the checkers, Beilman held off his fellow Can-Am racer by one second to take the first-ever LOORS win with the Maverick 1000R.

“With literally only minutes of seat time in the new Can-Am Maverick, we didn’t really know what to expect this weekend. We knew the Maverick 1000R was fast, but didn’t know how it would stack up under real race conditions. Obviously, my Velocity / Can-Am Maverick showed us that it could out perform the competition right out of the box and that is huge,” said Beilman.

The LOORS schedule resumes Saturday, April 13 at Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park in Southern California.

TQRA Results:

Louis Powersports / Can-Am DS 450 teammates and brothers Hunter and Cody Miller each won one Open Expert (Pro) class moto at round one of the TQRA series opener at Village Creek MX in Forth Worth, Texas. However, since Cody won the final moto, he earned the overall win over the elder Miller.

With 1-2 moto finishes, Cody also edged Hunter in the Pro-Am ATV class. Hunter Miller won the second moto, but finished third in the first moto and had to settle for second overall. With a 1-1 moto sweep, fellow Can-Am racer, Jeff Reeves, won the Over 30 A class and put his DS 450 ATV on top of the podium at Village Creek MX.

The Millers were excited to debut their Maverick 1000R X rs vehicles in the series, but due to a lack of competition, the side-by-side racing was cancelled. Round two of the TQRA series is slated for March 16-17, at Moto City in Blanchard, Okla.

STI HAS YOUR BACK AT 2013 DIRT SERIES

The Dirt Series has gained a whole lot of traction since last year. It’s back and better than ever for 2013, and this time around STI will be providing a generous contingency program to ATV and UTV competitors of all ages and skill levels. STI will also be working through Triumph Motorsports to provide reliable trackside support and product.

The gate drops this weekend, March 10, at Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park. This SoCal-oriented series features a total of eight events—once a month—until the finale in October. There will also be a series-ending awards banquet.

A racer must participate in six of the eight rounds to qualify for overall series perks. A wide array of sponsors has stepped up to chip in more than $150,000 worth of prizes to motorcycle, ATV, UTV, trophy kart and stadium lites classes.

According to series promoters, the main focus is to bring new life back into the rich history of the area by utilizing existing core tracks or tracks that have been unavailable to some of the vehicles being raced that can accommodate the series premise.

Being a new style series, the intent is to co-exist with other local races and develop a standalone series that can excite youth, beginner, amateur, vet and pro racers, keeping the series and travel schedule feasible for a budget-minded racer, sponsor, vendor and/or spectator range, integrate different racing environments, give away great prizes and just put on a good-time event!

SXS Competition Is Heating Up Once Again

0

Sometimes the leader of the pack faces challenges from all angles and in the side by side industry it has happened almost every model year since the development of the 50-inch Polaris RZR.

Just announced this week the engineers at Arctic Cat are working on a tight trail model of their popular Wildcat. Getting the same response as the original Wildcat may be a bit different though.

Having a more trail-capable machine rather than another wide-open desert machine seems to be a goal of Arctic Cat. This is where the Prowler line was stationed before the Wildcat came into the picture.

With talk of limited edition models as well as performance models of this narrower Cat, all indications are it will be “sport-focused”. This move by the Thief River Falls manufacturer adds lends more credit to the original 50-inch Polaris RZR.

We have to wonder if this will mean we’ll no longer see the Prowler line continue to grow. Will the Prowler fade to black as the sportier Wildcat take the spotlight in the eyes of the majority of consumers in this market?

One thing’s for sure, the side-by-side market is exploding and with many players in the pure sport segment focusing on the two and four passenger models there is no telling just what awaits consumers in the future.

Arctic Cat 50-Inch-Wide Wildcat

Arctic Cat Inc. (ACAT) today unveiled plans to produce an all-new 50-inch wide, trail-legal Wildcat. The narrower stance of the Wildcat model will allow riders access to authorized ATV trails, making the 50-inch Wildcat a versatile option for consumers.

The company expects to begin shipping the 50-inch Wildcat side-by-side to dealers in the 2014 fiscal fourth quarter.

“The new 50-inch trail model builds upon the success of our pure-sport Wildcat,” said Claude Jordan, Arctic Cat’s chairman and CEO. “Our 50-inch model will feature everything enthusiasts love about the Wildcat, including the styling, and will lead the trail category with an unmatched suspension and ride-in comfort. Combine this with an all-new twin-cylinder engine and consumers will have an unrivalled Wildcat riding experience.”

The 50-inch Wildcat trail model further expands Arctic Cat’s Wildcat line, which was named Dirt Trax Magazine’s “Best-In-Class Extreme Performance ROV.” Arctic Cat offers the Wildcat in Base and Limited models, as well as the recently introduced four-seat Wildcat 4 and high-horsepower Wildcat X.

About Arctic Cat – Arctic Cat Inc. designs, engineers, manufactures and markets all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), side-by-sides and snowmobiles under the Arctic Cat brand name, as well as related parts, garments and accessories. BEAD BUSTER: Why Didn’t I Think of That?!

0

Each and every year there are trade shows all over the USA for the offroad world.

This year the Dealer Expo in Indianapolis brought with it hundreds of dealer-specific vendors to showcase a wide variety of new products.

One product that caught our attention was the new Bead Buster tool. As many of you may know, the hardest part about changing tires is getting the bead broken off of factory rims. This can even be hard on some after market wheels as well.

The effortless use of the Bead Buster gets the job done quickly. It’s perfect for all tool boxes and quite frankly it is a must have for the do it yourselfer in the family.

Simply spraying the rim and tire bead with mild soapy water and slipping the tool into place starts the process. Using a cordless impact driver the bolt on the front of the tool pulls the wedge foot between the tire and rim.

The second bolt on top is then used to lower a foot that pushes the tire off of the bead. The front clamp foot pad protects custom wheel surfaces so no worry of damaging the cool wheel on your ATV or UTV.

This is an over-simplified explanation of its use so visit the bead buster website and watch a video explaining in more detail.

This is a must have tool and at around a hundred bucks you can afford to have one too.

Battery of The Future?

0

How many times have you wished you could drop a few pounds before race season to get an advantage on the track?

It is not an easy task and desire to race sometimes isn’t enough motivation to make that happen.

What if you could drop weight on your machine instead? It is possible with today’s technology and you might even get better starts as well.

I’ve been digging around in the charging system on my Can-Am Outlander and found that the stock battery sometimes isn’t getting the job done with the increases in compression.

I was recently introduced to the world of lithium ferrous batteries and am convinced this is the battery of the future.

Smaller than the stock battery in my Can-Am Outlander, it weighs almost 13 pounds less and gives the higher compression engine a spin like no other.

The only drawback to this battery technology could be the price, which goes for around $199 and up. Companies like CV4 in North Carolina have been working on reducing costs adn pass the savings onto the buyer.

It’s amazing what the human mind can dream up. We’re definitely getting a glimpse into the future as this technology continues to gain ground.
