RZR First Side-by-Side to Finish Baja 500

Press Release –

The RANGER RZR continues to be a force in the racing world, this time by not only winning the UTV class at the Baja 500 but by being the first side-by-side to ever finish the race.

After being the last vehicle to start, Mark Lindsay’s team, consisting of Lindsay, driver Phil Holdsworth and co-driver Michael King, raced the sole RANGER RZR entry to the finish line in 19:49:30.

Thirty-three miles into the race, the challenge of a loose, rocky incline brought the vehicles in front of Lindsay to a stand-still. When it was finally his turn, he blew through the obstacle with ease. The RANGER RZR did well through the sand washes, silt beds, whoops and everything the race threw its way.

“Being the first side-by-side to finish and win the Baja 500 UTV Class is a true testament to the quality and ability of the RANGER RZR,” said Craig Scanlon, product line sales manager for the Polaris Side x Side Division. “We congratulate Mark Lindsay and his team for continuing to show the RANGER RZR can dominate even in the most extreme conditions.”

When asked why he chose a RANGER RZR for the race, Lindsay responded, “For the Baja? This isn’t farm work, you need a real machine out here.”

Lindsay’s team was sponsored by Afraidium Racing, FST, BS Sand, Iron City Polaris, Bronco Clutch, F2 Racing, HMF Exhaust, The Lindsay Group RE/MAX, MAXXIS tires, TireBalls, OMF Wheels and King shocks.

Suzuki Rolls Out the 2009 QuadSport LT-Z400

On June 25, Suzuki formally introduced the 2009 QuadSport LT-Z400 at a media event held at the Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall, California.

Against a backdrop of grazing thoroughbreds, this race-horse breeding farm proved to be a fitting venue to show off the 2009 enhancements to this well-bred champion ATV.

Since its inception in 2002, the QuadSport Z400 has had an impressive racing heritage as well as being a popular and versatile all-around sport ATV.

The design concept for the 2009 QuadSport Z400 was “Engineered for Fun” and with the additional performance improvements and cutting-edge QuadRacer R450-styling, the Z400 certainly lives up to its objective.

“The 2003 LT-Z400 took ATV performance to a new level,” Glenn Hansen, Suzuki’s Communication Manager explained during the presentation. “It pushed the performance edge and gave Doug Gust the Championship in the 2004 Pro Production class. The 2009 QuadSport has once again set a new level of performance.”

In addition to adopting the aggressive QuadRacer R-450 look, the new Z400 borrowed other elements from its racy sibling. First and foremost is the addition of Fuel Injection.

Electronic fuel injection gives the Z400 a noticeably smoother and quicker throttle response, improved starting and performance in a variety of conditions, and improved fuel efficiency.

Mel Harris, Vice President of American Suzuki Motor Corporation, spoke highly of the efforts that went into the design: “Suzuki is definitely the leader with fuel injection in its products.”

The 2009 model also boasts an R450-like logic and ignition system. This Engine Control Unit monitors throttle position, engine RPM and the rate of change of both. By deciding the optimum settings for volume and timing, the ECU also gives the ATV improved traction.

The new QuadSport’s engine updates include a change in cam profile and timing, an intake port redesign, change in internal muffler structure and shorter exhaust header pipe.

These four elements help deliver a noticeable improvement in low to mid-range power output while maintaining the Z’s strong top-end power.

Externally, the chassis has been redesigned to be more accessible, functional and user-friendly. The front track has been widened by an inch, and the caster, camber and trail have all been changed. All of these modifications give the Z400 a lighter steering feel and more sure-footed handling.

Changes in both the front and rear suspension offer the rider a firmer response plus a plush feel resulting in a comfortable, enjoyable ride.

Ergonomically, the new Suzuki QuadSport moves the rider into a different position that allows more freedom of movement for weight shifting and comfort. The handlebars have been lowered and reshaped and the footrests have been lowered and widened to the same width as the R450.

Additional changes to the 2009 model include other R450 inspired updates that make the Suzuki QuadSport Z-400 the perfect all-around sand, trail and track ATV. No other ATV offers the versatility of the QuadSport Z-400.

“Engineered for Fun”, the QuadSport Z-400 offers a combination of trail-riding fun and high-performance attitude that keep it a breed apart in performance, styling and comfort.

The QuadSport Z-400 will be available in September in both white and yellow for $6199 MSRP.

NEATV Race Report

Press Release –

Round 4 of the New England ATV Motocross series was held, for a third time this season, at the Jolly Roger MX Park in Lempster, New Hampshire where Joe Haavisto took the overall win in both the Pro and Pro-am classes to increase his series points lead accordingly.

Around 1:30 pm on Sunday, rains poured down heavily on the sandy track of Jolly Roger and caused the second round of motos for the day to be halted until the rains and lightning left the area.

Racing started back up around 2:15 pm with the women’s class on track. Racers were greeted with a very sloppy and saturated racecourse, which left many of them unrecognizable after only a few laps.

Sydney MacQuarrie put her pink #33 Suzuki Quad Racer Z400 towards the front and nearly checked out from the rest of the pack, until a slip up later in the race put her back a few places allowing Lauren Whipple, Amy Thompson, Paige Whipple, Angie Maher, and Caitlyn Hebert to go around her.

MacQuarrie had to settle for 11th overall while Lauren Whipple took the overall win, followed by Paige Whipple in 2nd and Amy Thompson secured the last spot on the podium.

In the amateur 4-Stroke C class it was #27 Mike Skalaski on his white LTR-450 putting the hurt on the rest of the pack bringing home a 1-1 finish with huge lead over the competition.

Even with bike problems and tire issues, caused by the rocky course, Skalaski was able to increase his points lead in the championship to a staggering 45+ points. Following Skalaski on the podium was Justin Digianni in 2nd and Chris Donahue in 3rd.

In the Pro ranks it was Joe Haavisto bringing home the overalls in both the Open Pro race as well as the Pro-Am class.

Joe fought his way through both motos of the day battling against other top riders such as Tommy Mofford, Vinny Mofford, Danny Lewis, and Myles Santaniello.

In Pro moto number one it was Thomas Mofford on his #21 BCS Kawasaki that took the holeshot, followed by #621 Danny Lewis, #26 Vinny Mofford, and #75 Joe Haavisto. The case for moto two however, was a little different.

Just as in moto one, #21 Thomas Mofford was up in the front of the pack leading from the starting gate area, but as the racers rounded the first turn, being propelled by his Baldwin powered Kawasaki 450 and mud thrashing Maxxis Razr 2 tires, Joe Haavisto rocketed passed Mofford.

The track had dried slightly before the start of Pro moto number two, but was still in disarray as they railed around each corner.

These conditions were no match for the racers though, as they continued to fly around the course as if there were no such thing as rain.

Many racers took their goggles off, as it was too hard to see due to the mud caking their lenses as they navigated the track.

Haavisto took the moto two win and the overall, Danny Lewis claimed a 1-3 finish which earned him 2nd overall, Thomas Mofford’s 5-2 got him the last spot on the podium. Justin “Muff” Hoffler grabbed the number four position while Myles Santaniello rounded out the top five.

In Pro-am, it was Haavisto’s 1-1 that got him the top spot on the podium with Danny Lewis taking 2nd, and Justin Hoffler in third. Michael Pilotte finished in 4th and Myles Santaniello hung on to 5th place.

In the 40+ class, Andre Marois claimed a 1-1 finish to claim 1st overall with series points leader Terry Frischkorn taking 2nd and Steve Mofford grabbed 3rd place. In 4-Stroke Expert A, Jesse Onesti took home the overall win, with Jon Normandin in 2nd and Brian Lightbody took 3rd.

In the 50cc Limited class, it was series points leader Deven Fontaine, with a 1-1 finish, who took the overall. Luke Brown took a solid 2nd with his 2-2 finish and Jacob Jean finished a consistent 3-3, to take the last place on the podium. In the Youth 200/300 class, points leader Dylan Murcott took the overall win with Abram Hakala in 2nd and Justin Cyr took 3rd overall.

The next race in the New England ATV MX series will be held at the MX-207 racecourse in beautiful Lyman, ME on June 29th. Gates open on Friday at 4pm, Saturday at 7am, and on Sunday 6am. Entry fee will be $15 and there is a Saturday open practice fee of $35.

McGill Earns 5th at Yadkinville GNCC

Press Release –

FRE/KTM Factory rider Adam McGill earned 5th overall at the eighth round of the GNCC Series while his teammate Taylor Kiser also finished inside the top ten taking home a hard fought 8th overall.

McGill got a decent start and was battling with the top riders early on. Unfortunately, his teammate, Kiser, had worse luck and neared the first turn almost dead last.

In the first lap, Kiser was able to charge through the pack and move into 10th at the check point. From that point it became more difficult for Kiser to pass the other riders as the course was dusty and tight through many sections.

“I rode to the best of my ability but once the top riders began to spread themselves out it was hard to make up time in the dust. It appeared that where you started was where you would finish,” commented Kiser.

Kiser did eventually move into 8th place and began to catch William Yokley and Chris Borich on the last lap.

“By the time I got them in view, we were down to three miles to go with only tight sections left. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get close enough to make the pass,” reported Kiser. “I was happy with my performance today considering my poor start and the track conditions and I am just hoping for a better start at the next round.”

McGill rode a smooth and consistent race and finished 5th overall. His 5th place finish puts him 3rd overall in the series points just one point shy of second place.

Shumaker Earns Season-Best Finish in Tennessee

Press Release –

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Russell Shumaker rode to his best finish of the season just outside the top five during the eighth round of the AMA ATV Motocross Championship Series at Muddy Creek MX in Blountsville, Tenn.

While Shumaker finished sixth overall, teammates Josh Creamer and Keith Little finished 13th and 19th, respectively.

Go Shumaker

The first moto had Shumaker starting near the back of the pack, but by the end of the first lap he had passed his way up to eighth.

He got a break when two guys in front of him collided, moving him up to sixth for the moto. In the second moto, he was hit going into the first turn and was able to come back for 13th.

“Second moto I came out of the gate really good,” said Shumaker. “I ended up bouncing off everyone and got tangled up with two guys in the first corner. Overall I’m really happy.”

Young Gun

Even though Shumaker is the youngest member on the team, he was able to hold down the best finish of the Kawasaki crew.

“I’m really excited about my finish,” said Shumaker. “I’m just hoping to use this as momentum and keep improving on the Kawasaki.”

Creamer

Creamer had a good jump at the start of the first moto, but had to pull in with a bike issue. He made up for it in the second moto by getting a top-five start, finishing the moto in sixth and 14th overall.

“The second moto I had a bad gate pick because of the first moto finish, but I got the jump right as the gate was dropping and was in the top five in the first turn,” said Creamer. “The race wasn’t as great as I had wanted but I was able to come away in sixth.”

Torn Bicep

Shumaker’s mechanic and dad, Paul Shumaker, showed his ultimate commitment to his son’s racing career after he tore his bicep while lifting the quad on the starting line a few races ago. He has since had surgery and now is in a cast for 10 weeks.

“He knew right away that something was wrong because it shriveled up,” said Shumaker. “He’s still supporting the team with his Monster Energy sticker on the cast.”

Constant Improvements

There have been many changes to the ATV program this year. The cancellation of the team’s primary series was an unexpected transition, but the team has also continued to make improvements to the impressive KFX®450R.

“It’s a great quad,” said Creamer. “The conditions have been tough this year with all the mud races and I think this race we were able to get some good set-ups figured out. We also tested a few weeks ago and that really helped us out.”
