Ryde FX SOLO Shocks for the Outlaw

0

Here’s some insight as to what will be used in the suspension of the KTM powered Polaris Outlaw 525.

Our friends from Arvin/Meritor, makers of popular Ryde FX shocks sent us a set of dampers that fit right on the 500 Outlaw. We’d gamble these will be standard equipment on the 525 in 2007.

At this writing we’re not sure if the Ryde FXs will be found on both Outlaw models or just used exclusively on the 525. However, we are sure whatever they find their way onto, you’ll be happy to see them.

The new SOLO Pro series shocks offer more than just light weight and good looks. The one piece aluminum body, internal floating piston pressurized gas design offers a wide range of compression adjustability using a small flat head adjuster screw (we hope production models will include those cool Ryde FX clicker- style indexed adjuster knobs, making trail or track adjustments way- easy).

The tall, coarsely threaded aluminum bodies make preload adjustments a cinch and give you lots of room for setting preload by simply grabbing the spring and rotating with your hands.

SOLO Pro shocks will take all the abuse you’re capable of giving and will not succumb to the fade so common with cheaper steel body shocks.

Preload and compression adjustability means you can dial in the suspension to suit your individual needs and make easy adjustments when required.

Handling was not compromised at all with the removal of the Fox Podium X shocks from our 500 Outlaw test unit. In fact, the Outlaw handled far better, particularly under gnarly trail conditions and harsh trackside hits.

We think Polaris’s switch to Ryde FX is a win-win for consumers and a big step forward for the Outlaw. Our only gripe is the deletion of the piggyback reservoirs, standard on the Fox Podiums.

The piggybacks might add a little weight but they sure do look great on the long legged Outlaw. Package that up with some of those easy-to-use clicker thumbwheel adjusters and you’ve got yourself one potent, user friendly suspension package!

Polaris Announces ’07 Factory Racing Sponsorships

Press Release –

On March 8th Polaris Industries announced its 2007 ATV racing sponsorships, the continuation of industry’s largest ATV contingency program for Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) ATV classes, and the continuation of a contingency offering for three races in SCORE International’s Off-Road Racing Series.

Along with the recent announcement of Doug Eichner in WORCS, other new Polaris racing team members for 2007 are GNCC Pro Bryan Baker and Pro Jeff Hancock for SCORE International and Best in the Desert.

Returning racers include GNCC Women Racer Stephanie Parton, Super Senior John Gallagher and the Wilson Racing Team.

Most riders will race the new Outlaw 525, the fastest accelerating stock quad that couples independent rear suspension (PRO-IRS) with KTM’s famous 525 engine.

“Polaris is excited about our ATV racing program for 2007 and our ongoing commitment to the high performance ATV market,” said Jeff LeFever, marketing manager for the ATV Division at Polaris. “Last year we set out to show IRS had a place in off road racing, this year we are taking it a step further by showing the versatility and toughness of the quad on both the cross country trails and in the sand.”

Maxxis Takes 8 of ATV Top 11 at Maxxis General

Press Release –

With eight of the top eleven ATV riders at the Maxxis General, Maxxis consolidated its early hold on the 2007 GNCC series. Bill Ballance took his second victory of the season in 02:00:06, while Chris Borich came in a close second at 02:00:08.

The fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh place riders were, in order: Taylor Kiser, Brandon Sommers, Brandon Ballance, and Matt Smiley. Chris Jenks nabbed ninth place, and Jarrod McClure took eleventh place. The Maxxis General was held March 11 in Washington, Georgia.

Ballance’s Sunday win was his fifth straight at the Washington General. “This place is just good for me,” he told gnccracing.com. “It gets pretty rough, and it seems like the faster you go, the better it is; you just stay up on top and float all over it.”

Ballance’s brother Brandon took the holeshot and an early lead, with Bill heading the pack later in the race. “I got out front and just held it as long as I could, and I figure that’s going to help me get my pace up. It feels great,” Brandon Ballance told gnccracing.com. The younger Ballance’s great start continues Maxxis’ holeshot dominance. Ballance’s holeshot at the General is the 15th in a row for Maxxis riders, tracked since the beginning of the 2006 season.

The FMF Steele Creek is the next GNCC event, scheduled for March 24-25 in Morganton, North Carolina. Maxxis congratulates Bill Ballance on his victory and all of these riders on their fine performances.

YOKLEY HANGS TOUGH AT GNCC IN GEORGIA

Press Release –

Monster Energy Kawasaki ATV rider William Yokley continued his battle for the GNCC XC1 class championship last weekend with another consistent top-10 finish in Washington, Ga.

With a start that left him near the back, Yokley put his head down and made a charge. He raced hard into the woods section, but eventually collided with another rider while trying to pass on the narrow track.

Yokley was running in 19th place after the 12 mile first lap and showed no sign of giving up. His determination and drive on his all-new Kawasaki KFX®450R would eventually earn him an eighth-place finish.

“I know from riding this new KFX®450R and working with the new team, I will be running up front for the win in the near future,” said Yokley. “I can’t wait.”

The Monster Energy Kawasaki ATV team will be in Morganton, N.C., on March 24, for round three of the GNCC East Coast Series.

Is A Used TRX400 Worth The Dough?

Question:

I am looking at buying an ’05 HONDA TRX400 EX for $5k OTD and would like to know if this bike is worth the price.

I would also like to know how reliable this bike is and how it compares to other bikes in this class.

Aaron Noble

Response:

Can’t tell you if the particular ATV you’re looking at is worth the price, but I can assure you there is probably no better sport model on the market for resale, availability of good aftermarket stuff and all-round performance.

Although the 400 EX doesn’t have a liquid cooled mill, its a great handler, extremely light and offers excellent off-road trail manners – especially when you stack up ride quality.

I’d recommend this Honda in a heartbeat, used or new!

Pell City Shakedown

Press Release –

The first race of the AMA Pro ATV Series in Pell City, Alabama turned out to be a shakedown event for Team MSR/Pro Taper/Suzuki/Yoshimura as well as for a number of other teams and riders on the circuit. The team had a lot of new factors that had to come together into one cohesive unit – new name, new sponsors, new rider, new mechanics, new crew chief. It was time to get it all pulled together and race.

The first moto saw Doug and Dustin (the “Double D’s) charging forward and by the last lap, they were in good finishing position. Unfortunately, both quads stopped running within 100 feet of one another! At this writing the cause is unknown but an experimental electrical part is suspected.

The team went to work in between motos putting the quads back to the stock spec motor that had produced the WPSA title for Gust last year. After a lot of work that was as impressive as a NASCAR team, the two riders were back on the starting line for the second moto.

Doug spun his tires and came off the blocks in 6th. A typically stellar “Digger” Doug ride put him all the way up into second by motos end. He and Chad Wienen battled it out for a bit, but Doug held on to the spot and walked away with the #2 spot and a 7th overall.

For Dustin Wimmer’s first GNC event on a yellow bike, the DNF was a disappointment. He had gotten a good start and was in third place when he stopped dead in the water.

“I was really impressed with the crew,” Wimmer commented. “It was amazing to have two incidents and be back at the starting gate within a couple of hours. This team really works together incredibly well.”

In the second moto, Wimmer came out in 8th and had a good race finishing 5th in the moto and 11th overall.

“These early rounds are a time to get the bugs worked out,” Suzuki’s Rod Lopusnak said. “The team really gelled and came together. We didn’t get the points we wanted, but we’re still fine-tuning everything.”

Part of the “fine tuning” was a state of the art hospitality center complete with palm trees and floral arrangements. What has quad racing come too?

Of the eight (count ’em…8) Suzukis entered in the Pro Class, one was young Suzuki Pro support rider Russell Shumaker. Suzuki supports the sport and Russell is living proof. In addition to the Pro team, Suzuki picked up young Shumaker 3 years ago in an effort to bring along a young amateur.

In Russell, the pay-off occurred here in Pell City. Pell City was Russell’s first ever Pro race and he got great starts and ended the day 5th overall.

“I was really nervous on the starting line,” Russell said. “It was really exciting to be riding Pro with all these guys. It felt really good to get a fifth.” Of note here – Suzuki is now looking at several Pro-Am riders to be the next Russell Shumaker. The commitment continues.

Speaking of support – Suzuki, Yoshimura, KBC Helmets and MSR have all weighed in with support for the new Lost Creek/Yoshimura/Suzuki team. They showed up in force and came away with a great showing.

Team Riders Jason Dunkelberger (8th overall) and new signee Joe Haavisto (6th overall) had a great day with both finishing inside the top ten. Kevin Mummah’s Suzuki support squad really impressed and looks to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

Yoshimura’s Brant Russell was happy with the results. “I was really gratified to see Kevin’s guys do well and for sure Shumaker do as good as he did. These are all neat people with good programs.

Gust brought Shumaker to Suzuki and Yoshimura years ago and Rod Lopusnak had the vision to slowly bring him along. Russell and his family are great people and it’s really good to see them do well. I’d like to thank Shumaker and Gust’s Riding School for making us look like we know what we are doing!”

Brant went on, “Kevin and the Lost Creek group are awesome. It is so good to see them start the season like this… Again, great people who put their heart and soul into the sport. Yoshimura is proud to be associated with them. I’d also like to point out that Suzuki, Yoshimura, MSR, Pro Taper and all of the program partners involved with Suzuki are putting their money where their mouths are.

I’m pumped to see eight Pro’s running Suzuki LT-R450 QuadRacers out there. All these other guys are more or less, just along for the ride… Suzuki is the real deal, they are dedicated to this stuff and it shows in the commitment and the passion.”

So, now the team heads back to California and has two weeks to make some additional improvements and corrections on the settings and get some more practice time in before the Glen Helen event.

But everyone walked away feeling good about the direction that the team is going in. The teamwork and “chemistry” was great, 2007 is looking to be a great season.
