Polaris Sportsman 800 Drain Plug

0

Here’s a pic of the drain plug nightmare our crew encountered only a few miles into our Big Bore Shootout covered in the volume 7, Number 2 issue of All-Terrain Vehicle Magazine.

The mighty 800 Polaris twin encountered one nasty rock, knocking the engine oil drain plug loose and put its mill in serious peril thus preventing the Sportsman from competing.

We think a showdown between this issue’s Big Bore champ and the winner of the EFI Shootout from several issues back will settle any remaining questions.

DS With Baja Skin

0

Although not the most popular pure sport ATV with the California dune crowd, the Bombardier DS 650 has amassed impressive racing laurels including a win at Paris/Dakar and the grueling SCORE Baja 1000 last fall.

Two years ago the DS moved to more mainstream with a shorter rear swing arm and a narrower stance so it would fit on established two-track trails. These tweaks netted a solid improvement in both handling and acceleration, especially when getting sideways or pulling wheelies on command.

The DS uses a brawny Rotax 4-valve single and generates more stump pulling torque than any other pure sport built.

The Baja is jammed with a bundle of accessories including nerf bars, pencil beam off-road lights bead braced rims and shock covers.

Yamaha nailed the Pure Sport ATV category with a completely new Raptor 700R featuring improved ergonomics, better handling, a lower CG and a sophisticated 4-valve, fuel injected engine.

The 700R is a significant choice as Best In Class because it is the industry’s first ever large production Sport ATV with EFI. It’s an easy winner because its engine delivers class-leading power and torque to a throng of already converted Raptor customers.

Since it first appeared in the marketplace, the 660 Rap has been one of the most popular performance ATVs ever and now, those thousands of owners will be upgrading to the new 700R and will be getting one of the finest examples of the Pure Sport breed ever produced.

YFZ 450 Puts Up A Good Fight

The Yamaha YFZ 450 has undergone a long list of upgrades and changes this year. Although “the Eff” doesn’t have as wide an appeal as the Raptor, it has proven its prowess on hundreds of racetracks around the world.

This is a serious fighter and in the hands of an expert rider is practically unbeatable. It’s prime limitation is the serious nature of its design. It’s not for everyone, but for those who qualify, it’s an amazing performer.

Outlaw Too Good To Ignore

0

Polaris has shuffled the deck with an innovation that could change the rules in the Pure Sport class forever.

Only the Outlaw 500 features fully independent rear suspension in a sport ATV. The superiority of this design can only be appreciated when taken for a ride.

Rough, gnarly terrain is mastered so easily, it’s difficult to believe no one else thought of this before.

As the word gets out, we’re betting larger volumes of Sport-trail riders will move to this design since it’s just too good to ignore.

The TRX has established a significant history of racing laurels since its introduction and with this year’s upgrades will continue to be a force in its class.

50cc’s of Fun from Unison

The entry Level 50cc Desert Cat Mini brings a-new-to-the-ATV-market remote wireless parental control.

Looking like an automotive key fob, parents can cut the ignition to the Desert Cat 50 at any time with the push of a button. Likewise they can reset the control from the fob and allow the youngster to restart the ATV. This is one of the best child safety features we have seen on a youth ATV – and it’s sure to be copied.

The 50cc Mini is electronically governed and has plenty of pep for a new rider. This is a relatively small ATV and is clearly designed for beginners.
