Tread Lightly: Responsible ATV Riding

0

In this segment of DIRT TRAX CLASSICS, Motorhead Mark is here to remind you to TREAD LIGHTLY while out on the trail on an ATV.

Here is a quick guide for what the TREAD LIGHTLY acronym stands for. The ‘T’ in TREAD refers to ‘traveling responsibly’, The ‘R’ refers to ‘respecting the rights of others’, ‘E’ is a reminder to ‘educate yourself’, ‘A’ is for ‘avoiding sensitive areas’ and ‘D’ means ‘do your part’ to maintain trail cleanliness. Be sure to follow these guidelines for a great trail riding experience for you and other riders using the trail.

BOMBARDIER TRAXTER MAX

We nearly fell over when we saw how many votes were cast in favor of the old Traxter.

Heavy, awkwardly wide, unsophisticated driveline? Boring? You bet.

The point is, the Traxter got votes because of its walk-through ergonomics, its tough-as-nails lifespan and its amazing hauling and pulling power.

The hunters in our test crew swear there’s no better ATV to haul a carcass out of the wild or hundreds of pounds of gear to the hunt camp. The Max takes an extra passenger, too.

When you’re doing actual work duties like fence repair on the range or pulling a small grader or plow, the Traxter works like a tractor and will do it all day long without complaining.

You can jump on and off this ATV without fatigue and its non-IRS back end actually rode surprisingly well.

BRP CELEBRATES CAN-AM SPYDER 10TH ANNIVERSARY WITH HOMECOMING EVENT; UNVEILS SPECIAL EDITION MODELS

Valcourt, Quebec, June 5, 2017 – This past weekend, BRP (TSX:DOO) welcomed nearly 3,000 Can-Am Spyder owners and guests from around the globe to its headquarters in Valcourt, Quebec, for a Can-Am Spyder 10th Anniversary Homecoming Event. It marked the largest single gathering of owners in the history of the brand, which launched in 2007.

Festivities kicked off with the unveiling of three special edition Can-Am Spyder models custom- designed for the milestone – the RT Limited 10th Anniversary edition, the F3 Limited 10th Anniversary edition and the F3-S 10th Anniversary edition. The commemorative models each feature premium jet black metallic and liquid gold satin colors, along with a beautifully-embossed 10th anniversary logo and stitching, a luxurious Can-Am satin gold logo, and exceptional new “Y” design wheels. These exclusive models will be built to order, and BRP has started taking orders immediately following the announcement.

“The collector models are a celebration of ten years of redefining the open road,” said Josée Perreault, Senior Vice President, Can-Am Spyder. “Since the beginning, Can-Am Spyder owners – including more than 100,000 today – have been passionate about the Spyder’s unique combination of wind-in-your-face exhilaration, together with the stability and peace of mind of its Y-shaped stance.”

Following the product unveiling, event attendees enjoyed VIP access to BRP’s award-winning Design & Innovation Center, its R&D facilities, the Can-Am Spyder factory and the world- renowned J. Armand Bombardier Museum. All of the weekend’s activities were socially-driven, including guided rides, celebrations and opportunities to meet like-minded friends.

“Celebrating this milestone with so many Can-Am Spyder owners was incredible,” said Josée Perreault, Senior Vice President, Can-Am Spyder. “For the past ten years, we’ve focused on empowering the masses to ride and explore the open road together. We welcomed people who were new to riding, experienced motorcyclists who’ve transitioned to the Spyder, women who’ve moved from being a passenger to the driver and much more. It was a true representation of all those who are passionate about the Can-Am Spyder.”

Thousands of people become Can-Am Spyder owners each year and make lifelong friends by either joining a Spyder owners’ club or simply riding and interacting with people on the road. Some of the many owners’ clubs around the world rode together to the Homecoming event, including cross-country rides across the U.S. and Canada.

Today, there is a Can-Am Spyder model for every lifestyle and definition of adventure. Since the first Spyder model, BRP has expanded its Can-Am lineup to cater to numerous riding preferences and needs. Find out more at www.canamspyder.com.

POLARIS SPORTSMAN 850 XP

Polaris knew it had a winner with its steadfast but aging McPherson Strut 800 and had to come up with something really good to replace it.

The new 850 XP, with its transverse engine placement and narrow footrest ergonomics soon made Polaris customers forget about the old 800 (to be fair, the company continued to offer the 800 as a “budget big bore” long after the 850 was introduced).

The 850, with its dual A-arm front end and great handling, hit a soft spot in our hearts after one ride. It felt light, even though it wasn’t particularly, and it’s engine-driveline performance was such an upgrade from the former Polaris flagship, it was like the difference between an Impala and a Porsche.

It’s heady throttle response from the new overhead cam twin could loft the front end over obstacles on the trail instantaneously with the slightest weight shift and a throttle blip even when seated, and throttle application and body-english were intuitive because of the riders ability to move around on the running boards, always in control.

One thing that makes the 850 stand out is its parallel twin’s 270/90 firing sequence that makes it sound like a V-twin. With this firing cadence, the bark from its dual exhausts is very Harley-like and draws attention to Sportsman 850 even at idle.

Yup, Polaris followed the 850 with a beefier 1000, but honestly, we all felt the 850 balanced the sweet spots of performance, handling and ride better.

Sometimes it’s just not possible to improve on perfect.

YAMAHA RAPTOR 660 AND 700

Some of the earliest versions of the biggest Grizzly – actually 660’s – were a bit quirky but by the time Yamaha defined its premium sport-ute as a 700, there was no doubt the company was onto something.

The key reason we’ve continued to love this ATV is defined in one word: Torque.

Yamaha’s concept of delivering big-time grunt in a very lightweight package with a single cylinder powerplant – not a twin, not a V-twin – and a ceiling of 700 cubes, really defies logic.

However, when you want to plonk up a gnarly stream or tackle a greasy slope, this wheeler is and always has been, amazing! It’s as durable as an anvil, too.

Although we wouldn’t put the ride quality in its earlier versions at the top of the industry, Yamaha has tweaked and tuned the biggest Grizzly’s independent suspension so it works really well.

Riding the 700 is a revelation. Its compact dimensions make it extremely agile. Even when loaded with gear, its tight turning radius and predictable low and mid-range throttle response makes for tremendous fun on rough and rocky, technical trails.

Yes, compared to the competition’s 800, 850 and 1000cc offerings, the Grizz 700 seems to be a weak sister. However, you have to ride this ATV on twisty trails and over gnarly junk to give it a fair appraisal.

In the worst of conditions this unit thrives.

POLARIS PARTICIPATES IN TRAIL RESTORATION

The National Forest Foundation (NFF) is pleased to announce an expanded partnership with Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII). Through Polaris’ $108,000 donation, the NFF will improve motorized-recreation opportunities on two existing off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails in Minnesota and Florida.

“Sustainable OHV trails provide millions of Americans the opportunity to enjoy their National Forests,” said Mary Mitsos, NFF president. “We are proud to continue our partnership with Polaris to sustain some of the diverse recreational opportunities contained within the 193-million-acre National Forest System.”

“A partnership with NFF is a great way for Polaris to improve the riding experience on shared public lands, while ensuring that ATV and OHV trails don’t impact forest health.” says Stacy Bogart, president of the Polaris Foundation.

In Minnesota’s Chippewa National Forest, Polaris is supporting critical trail maintenance activities on the Soo Line North Trail. The popular Soo Line North Trail traverses 52 miles of the Minnesota northwoods and crosses portions of the Chippewa National Forest and Bowstring State Forest. Upgrades to the Soo Line North Trail will focus on brushing the trail right-of-way, re-grading the trail surface, and removing debris from impaired culverts.

These activities will help ensure safe and accessible riding opportunities for OHV enthusiasts in north-central Minnesota, while also reducing trail-caused sedimentation from area streams. This marks the second year that Polaris has contributed to this project in its home state.

Polaris and the NFF also will improve the trailhead area of the Silver Lake OHV trailhead on Florida’s Apalachicola National Forest. Polaris’ support is part of a larger effort to better accommodate OHV users in the area. This project will rebuild the trailhead and transition zone, improve signage throughout the recreation area, and perform maintenance on trails leading from the trailhead. The new trailhead area will serve as a hub for the 55 miles of riding opportunity within the popular Silver Lake OHV area.

In partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and local community organizations, the NFF will begin implementing these projects this year and continue through the 2018 field season.

This donation marks the fourth year the NFF and Polaris have partnered to improve OHV and multi-use trails on National Forests.
