THE RIGHT WAY TO LIGHT YOUR WAY

0

I’ve always had a great fascination with night riding and while in Baja several years’ back I fell in love with the awesomeness of HID lighting equipment.

I have since realized many things about lights and possible problems that can arise from using more than necessary.

If you have never used huge lights you may be surprised just how exciting the trails at become at night. The biggest problem most people run into though is providing a large enough power source to keep the lights working.

You must realize that just because your engine is equipped with 12-volt power doesn’t mean there’s endless power on tap. Manufacturers will include what’s needed to keep the machine running and probably a little more to run small accessories.

If you’re looking to run a huge set of halogens on a stock stator, forget it! The stator winding in stock form will most likely not handle the extra draw and will fry itself trying to keep up.

The use of HIDs however is possible as long as there are not too many lights pulling from the same electrical source. HID lights pull extra wattage, but only approximately half or less of what a halogen would use. Having the stator wound by a professional to upgrade its output is the smartest way to go.

Use what your machine really needs in order to function properly with the additional electrical draw. Trust me when I say this, your components will fail if you don’t take this info seriously.

THANKFUL

0

Being in the Thanksgiving spirit over this past weekend I just had to write about some of the things in the ATV/UTV industry that I am thankful for.

These few items may only scratch the surface but I can guarantee you have said the same thing I have and that is “thank goodness for that”!

I am thankful for fuel injection because everyone knows jetting a carb for many different elevations and conditions really is a drag. Fuel injection also helps our favorite ride get up and go in any condition like a great ride should!

I am thankful for the supreme advancements in suspension. I cannot describe just how my back has suffered from the stock gas tube non-adjustable shocks I rode so many years prior to now. Can you imagine having to ride a machine as hard as you can with what was nothing more than a stiff spring?

I am thankful for the extreme development of the side-x-side. The industry has come so far and with the huge leaps in power thanks in part to fuel injection and also to suspension built to absorb the pounding for you.

Finally I am truly thankful to the many people who read my blogs and comment accordingly. If it were not for you I would be unemployed so I am most grateful to you my friends. Thank you.

MOTOWORKS / CAN-AM DS 450 TEAM WINS 2012 BAJA 1000

0

After a 27-hour battle with the most brutal racing terrain the Baja Peninsula of Mexico has to offer, the Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 team of Josh Frederick, Jeremie Warnia, Collins Webster and Jarrod McClure crossed the finish line ahead of 297 other starters and 1121 miles away from the start line of the Baja 1000 in Ensenada, Mexico. Once across the line, the team was officially declared the Pro ATV-class winner of the 45th running of the Baja 1000.

“This team was prepared to deliver BRP its first Pro ATV-class victory in over a decade and the first for the DS 450 ATV,” said Jimmie O’Dell, Can-Am off-road race manager. “The dedication by the entire Motoworks team was evident from pre-running to the finish; I am proud that they are an important partner with BRP.”

As the race descended the peninsula, and the terrain got rougher, the team gained time on the leader. And when darkness fell, the team made up ground on the first-place team. By dawn, the Motoworks-prepped DS 450 passed for the lead and pulled away to the finish line 300 miles away. The team won the race by more than two hours on the next Pro ATV-class competitor.

“I am so proud of everyone who was part of this Baja team,” said lead rider Josh Frederick. “It was a ton of hard work, but everyone really stepped up and made it happen. The bike was flawless. We had to change out a few bent parts early on, and that set us about an hour back. But we stuck to the plan and just kept plugging away it paid off in the end. I’m so happy right now!”

The team hit a rock and broke a the frame mount for the footpeg off about 200 miles into the race, after limping the stricken ATV into the next pit stop, the Motoworks crew quickly went to work to minimize the time lost. The machine was back out on the course in no time and started the amazing comeback on the lead teams.

“I can’t say enough about the racers and the pit crews,” said team owner Johnny Leach. “Winning the Baja 1000 is something everyone dreams of, and I am glad I was a part of getting this team prepped and ready for such a tough off-road race. This will be tough to top, but we can’t wait for next season.”

By winning the Baja 1000, Frederick also clinched the 2012 SCORE Pro ATV (Class 25) Championship title, earning himself the honour of being able to run the coveted #1A number plate during the upcoming 2013 SCORE season.
