UPDATED POINTS POSTED AT POWERSPORTSTOUR.COM

Press Release –

With just three races left this season, John Natalie, Jr. has moved to within just eight points of WPSA PowerSports ATV Tour SuperQuad Pro 450 Riders’ Championship leader Dustin Wimmer.

Natalie (No. 13 Elka, Maxxis/Honda), will celebrate his 32nd birthday tomorrow with the knowlege that his right back in the points chase. Natalie swept both Rounds 6 and 7 at Virginia Motorsports Park, proving he has rebounded from injuries sustained in a crash during practice earlier this year.

Wimmer (No. 191 MSR, Pro Taper, Yoshimura/Suzuki) still holds the point, however, going into the next round, scheduled for July 21-22 at Wild Cat Creek MX in Indiana.

In the QuadTerrain Pro Stock points, Jesse West (No. 888 West Racing/Arctic Cat) has moved to just three points behind leader Scott Kilby (No. 207 Warnert Racing/Can-Am).

In the SuperQuad Pro 450 Manufacturers’ Championship, Honda edged into Suzuki’s lead and now sits just 14 points back. Kawasaki, with strong finishes from its factory duo, moved to third on the board.

Can-Am continues to lead the points in the QuadTerrain Pro Stock manufacturers’ chase, but Arctic Cat remains in contention, just 14 points back.

Goodyear carbon fiber drive belt available online

Press Release –

The Goodyear Gatorback Sport ATV belt that created excitement when introduced earlier this year is now available on-line.

Goodyear Gatorback Sport is the first Continuously Variable Transmission or CVT belt with carbon fiber reinforcement in its body construction, according to Tom Lee, product manager for the belt line.

“Quad riders need precise, immediate throttle response and off-road durability,” said Lee. “Threadlike strands of carbon fiber that are strong, flexible and weigh much less than steel of similar strength are aligned in the rubber compound to provide added stiffness across the width of the belt.”

He said conventional CVT belt sidewalls can glaze and char from heat buildup when engaged with pulleys under extreme loads. Materials from the top width of the belt then turn down and inward, creating vibrations that can quickly destroy the belt.

“Gatorback Sport regulates itself under extreme events,” said Lee. “Its carbon fiber in the rubber compound allows desired edge slippage without losing top width. When extreme demand subsides, the edges self-heal and the belt again picks up the load.” He added that that tests show significantly reduced belt weight loss and improved top width wear without sacrificing pulley grip.

Gatorback Sport’s performance was born from race technology developed for NASCAR Nextel Cup Series teams last year and used first by Hendrick Motorsports to help add horsepower to the car driven by eventual Cup Series Champion Jimmy Johnson.

“We took what we learned at the track about carbon fiber and adapted it to help develop the belt for all-terrain vehicles,” said lee. “Its performance earns it the Gatorback name, joining a growing family of popular Gatorback automotive belts that are used by all major NASCAR Cup Series teams and are available in auto part stores and service centers.”

Gatorback Sport’s lateral strength comes from carbon fiber, but its longitudinal strength comes from Goodyear Flexten aramid cords traveling the circumference of the belt. Flexten minimizes stretch, stabilizes overall length and maximizes horsepower transmission.

“It all adds up to predictable tension performance,” said Lee, “and tension is as important to belts as air pressure is to tires.”

Gatorback Sport’s dimensions precisely duplicate most major ATV manufacturers’ original equipment profiles and measurements for top width, length and sidewalls to ensure proper fits. The belt’s top width range is 17 to 35 millimeters or 0.68 to 1.37 inches, while its length range is 679 to 1106 mm or 26.75 to 43.56 inches.

Enthusiasts can order Gatorback Sport ATV belts online by going to denniskirk.com and selecting “Engine & Transmission” under the “Off Road” category or by visiting rockymountainatv.com and selecting “Drive Belts under the “Drive” category.

A Little Nytro Packs a Big Bang

The shaft driven Nitro FRX90R is powered by a peppy 86cc single overhead cam 4-stroke with a 3-speed semi-automatic heel/toe shifter with reverse.

At first, this 3-gear concept was a bit confusing for our young rider having just come off a CVT, but after a brief lesson and a rip or two around our test track he got right into it.

Taking the time to teach your child to shift can open the door for future fun on a sport ATV or a dirt bike. The Nitro’s throttle limiter will also come in handy while you’re teaching your son or daughter the ins and outs of shifting. Reverse is also a big plus for an ATV in this category.

The Nitro FRX90R is a great bargain considering its feature load and power package. At $1,495 CDN (approximately $1,376 USD) plus freight, PDI and taxes, it’s priced significantly less than the youth offerings from the competition that weigh in at nearly double the price.

By saving this kind of money you can afford to outfit your kid with full riding and safety gear and have enough dough left over to gas up the Nytro for the entire season and still end up with spare change in your shorts.

One aspect that breeds skepticism in buyers is the availability of parts for these offshore ATVs. To battle this, Midwest includes its own worry-free 6 months parts and labor warranty. If for some reason you encounter an issue, you can be assured that it will be looked after and downtime will be minimal.

Visit MidwestCanada.com to see its complete lineup and call 1-866-899-7979 to find a dealer in your area.

Mods Suggestions For a Brute Force 750

Question:

Do you know of any simple and inexpensive mods for the Brute Force 750.I already have the CDI box and new clutch spring.

Girv

Response:

Thanks for your email!

In the “inexpensive” category you’ve just about covered the stuff which I would recommend with the exception of a new, low restriction air filter and possibly an air box mod. However, be very careful about drilling holes in the air box lid as this will defeat the baffling and snorkeling you’re BF uses to keep water out of the intake.

Next up for you is an exhaust system. Keep in mind there are now aftermarket exhaust systems which are not crazy loud and offer performance advantages. Do not modify your exhaust with a system which promises power at the expense of annoying your neighbors while hurting our sport!

Good luck!

Suzuki Showcases New Models at Vegas Dealer Show

Press Release –

Suzuki introduced fourteen new or significantly updated motorcycles and ATVs for 2008 at this week’s annual Suzuki Dealer Meeting. Suzuki dealers from around the country converged on Las Vegas to catch a glimpse of the exciting new line up.

Last year, Suzuki was the only major ATV manufacturer to have increased sales. Suzuki ATV Operations Manager Rod Lopusnak highlighted some of the reasons behind their success: “When you combine passion with Suzuki engineering and technology you get an outstanding, and growing line of rugged, versatile, and powerful ATVs”.

Perhaps the best illustration of this is the significantly updated QuadRacer R450. New features include yet another ATV industry first for Suzuki – the new ECM Logic and Ignition Control System.

The ECM monitors throttle position, engine RPM, and the transition rate of both throttle position, and engine RPM. The ECU then determines optimum fuel delivery and ignition timing to reduce wheel spin and increase traction.

New camshafts and exhaust system changes further increase power output, especially at low and mid range throttle settings.

There are many additional updates. A new countershaft has been added for better gearshift feel. Rubber mounted handlebars cut down on vibration and a textured slip- resistant seat cover was also added. The new seat cover, in addition to adding increased control, also helps with rider comfort.

The suspension wasn’t left alone either – the incredible new Kashima coating process has been applied to both front and rear suspension. This coating reduces friction and provides an overall smoother suspension stroke. The suspension settings in general have also been re-vamped to provide an even more responsive feel, and larger rear tires added to complete the picture. The swingarm has been significantly strengthened and extra rigidity built in for improved handling. The best keeps getting better.

If all that were not enough, a special all black Limited Edition will also be sold in limited quantities. The unit features black wheels, frame, bodywork, and an aggressive new graphics package.

“Like any championship winning ride,” Lopusnak said, “the Suzuki QuadRacer R450 continues to be updated and improved constantly to maintain its dominance over the competition.”

Look for the 2008 QuadRacer to appear in dealer showrooms this September with a MSRP of $7399 (Limited Edition model $7499)

The groundbreaking KingQuad line wasn’t left alone either. Although more details will be coming soon, the KingQuad line has been both expanded and improved for 2008. The flagship KingQuad 700 has been upped to 750cc in displacement along with numerous other improvements that will insure its position at the head of the pack.

But, the really big news is the addition of the new KingQuad 400. Replacing the Eiger- the new KingQuad 400 is the evolutionary next step up and worthy in every way of the KingQuad branding.

More information will be available soon, but it is plain to see that Suzuki is not sitting on its laurels. The 2008 line clearly demonstrates that Suzuki continues to offer the most competitive ATVs in each market segment.

Suzuki Lands on Podium in Virginia Double-Header

Press Release –

The inaugural visit to the Virginia Motorsports Park came up short after sweeping the podium in London, KY. The three-man team pulled second and third honors in both events, with John Natalie securing the top spot.

Heat and humidity were in abundance on Friday and Saturday with the clay, hard packed track starting out muddy on Friday. By the time the two main events came around on Sunday it had dried up to a slick, fast, superfreeway.

Overall, most of the riders liked the track with Suzuki’s Chad Wienen getting down to business setting the weekend’s fast times with a series of 1:48 laps. John Natalie was next fastest with 1:49’s while Gust was third in the 1:49 -1:50 range with Wimmer consistently running 1:50’s.

The various heat races went pretty well for the Suzuki camp with Wienen and Wimmer capturing wins. At the end of all the qualifying heats, the net result was that nothing much had changed.

Dustin Wimmer maintained his point lead while all the usual guys were going fast. It seems that so far in the race season four riders have emerged as potential winners: Wienen, Natalie, Wimmer, and reigning champ “Digger” Doug Gust.

On Sunday, the cloud cover of the previous few days disappeared and a dry, slick track faced the riders. The race would be sort of a MX/TT but with peaked step-up’s and assorted supercross type obstacles.

The Round 6 Main Event was typical of the last few races, Keith Little holeshot and was quickly passed on the first lap by the Natalie, Wimmer, Wienen, Gust freight train. The race was on with Natalie in first but a hard charging Wienen coming on fast.

Towards the end of the race Wienen had a rock lodge in his chain/countershaft and that was enough to decide the event. Natalie took the win. The podium ended up Natalie, Wimmer and Gust.

The Round 7 Main Event started the same as the previous one. Little got the holeshot and was quickly passed by Natalie. Wienen got hung up by Little for several laps before he, and the rest of the Suzuki riders blasted around him.

Wienen was on the charge and cutting large chunks of time off Natalie. Things were shaping up for a repeat of the London race where Chad ran Natalie down for the win.

But the slick track got the best of Wienen as an over aggressive throttle hand saw the Illinois speedster spin out exiting a corner.

Once under way, Chad closed back up to Natalie but simply ran out of time in his quest for the win.

An unfortunate note – in the first lap of Round 6, Lost Creek Cycle/Suzuki/Yoshimura rider Joe Haavisto got crossed up with another rider and suffered either a hip or leg injury. It looks like Joe will be out for some time.

John Natalie’s double win tightens up the points even more. With three races remaining it is really getting exciting. Look for the Suzuki QuadRacers to come out on top!

Round 6 will be aired on ESPN2 on August 18th at 12:00 pm and Round 7 will be aired on August 25th at 1:00 pm.

Next stop on the WPSA Tour is The AMSOIL Wild Cat Open Championship in Rossville, IN on July 21-22.

Couple Choose Polaris for Cross-Continent Trek

Press Release –

Polaris Sportsman X2 800s will carry couple from Canada to Mexico in 10 months

During a camping trip in Utah in 2000, Marc Joinville and France Labonté discovered an ATV trail that ran lengthwise through the state of Utah. Their finding sparked the dream to ride their ATVs from Canada to Mexico, through the United States.

“There are so many extraordinary places to discover, to explore and life is so short,” said Joinville. “We felt using quads would enable us to have access to remote places and give us the opportunity to enjoy incredible scenery.”

Owners of Polaris ATVs, Joinville contacted Polaris regarding their idea to ride cross-continent and the maker of “The World’s Toughest ATVs” provided them with two new Sportsman X2 800 ATVs, parts and clothing.

Polaris Sportsman ATVs are known for their legendary ride which will come in handy during the 10-month trek.

“When Joinville contacted us about their idea to travel across the continent, there was no doubt they would be riding ‘The World’s Toughest ATVs,’” said Jeff LeFever, marketing manager for Polaris ATVs. “The Sportsman X2 800 is the biggest and most versatile ATV in our line up making it the perfect machine for the varying terrain and extreme conditions the couple will encounter.”

The Sportsman X2 800s are equipped with a 800cc Polaris twin engine with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) for reliability at higher altitudes and include features such as a second seat that folds into the cargo box for added versatility; Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) which provides Sportsman’s legendary smooth ride, 8.5 inches of travel and 11 inches of ground clearance; VERSATRAC which enables the rider to choose from Turf mode, 2-wheel drive or AWD by a thumb switch on the handlebar.

True All-Wheel Drive that automatically engages when the rider needs more forward traction and reverts to 2WD automatically when AWD is no longer needed; an Engine Braking System (EBS), to assist with braking on steep inclines; and Active Descent Control (ADC) which provides four-wheel braking when the vehicle is in AWD, is operating at speeds below 15 mph and there is no throttle being applied. These features will ensure the Sportsman X2 800s conquer the rugged terrain Joinville and Labonté will encounter on their trek.

Joinville and Labonté will depart from British Columbia, Canada on July 7. Their “Quadtrek” journey will take them through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona and down the Baja peninsula, ending in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. They will live with the basics, camping and living in the wild for 10 months and carrying everything they need in a trailer behind one of the ATVs.

Quadtrek will be documented at www.polarisindustries.com/en-US/Vehicles/EventsAndTours/2007ATVDiaries which will include updates on their journey and pictures.

Yokley Finishes Sixth at Snowshoe GNCC

Press Release –

Monster Energy Kawasaki ATV rider William Yokley continued working up the ranks with a sixth place finish during round eight of the GNCC series in Snowshoe, W. Va.

The brand-new venue was located at a scenic ski resort, with parts of the course going up and down the ski slopes.

The live-engine start, which was different than other rounds, saw Yokley going into the first woods section in seventh. After getting stuck behind lapped riders, Yokley posted the fastest lap time of the day on lap three and rode to a solid sixth-place finish.

“I was really pleased with how my bike was working,” said Yokley. “The motor and clutch worked perfect and the brakes and suspension were spot on. Best of all, I was right in the hunt for a podium finish. I feel good about how my Kawasaki KFX®450R is developing, and can’t wait for the next race.”

Yokley currently sits ninth in the XC1 point standings.

The Monster Energy Kawasaki ATV team will take a two month break until round nine of the GNCC ATV series resumes in Somerset, Pa., on September 1.

Ballance Takes Win at Snowshoe GNCC ATV

Press Release –

Bill Ballance took a second straight win with his victory at the Snowshoe GNCC ATV race, consolidating his lead for the overall title.

Riders on Razrs swept the podium at the event, with Chris Borich in second place and Matt Smiley taking third. The first-ever Snowshoe GNCC ATV was held June 23 in Snowshoe, West Virginia.

Ballance won by overcoming a muddy, rock-strewn course that gnccracing.com called “almost impassable” in sections.

“There was probably three miles of the track out there that was just as gnarly as probably anything we ever see on any track throughout the whole season,” Ballance told gnccracing.com. “At one time there was five or six of us together, I think Chris and Matt and Bithell, and we come into that one section and everybody started splitting off and going different directions, and I picked a line and thought, ‘Oh Lord, this is way out of the way, I’m getting ready to get passed by a bunch of people,’ and wound up getting on through it, and wound up being an easier but longer line and I didn’t get hung up, and I think I got around those guys right there. I just put my head down and started pushing.”

Maxxis gained its 21st straight Holeshot Award when Borich took the lead at the start of the race. Chris Jenks took seventh place, and Brandon Sommers, who scored an overall top ten finish with ninth place, took his seventh Pro Am victory of the season.

Maxxis congratulates defending GNCC ATV champ Bill Ballance, and thanks all of its sponsored riders for proving that the performance and durability of Razrs are second to none.
