REDLINE REVOLT

0

If you know a thing or two about snowmobiling like we do, you’ll remember a few years back that a small company called Redline tried to enter the snomo-biz only to fail in its attempts.

This past weekend at Hay Days in Minnesota we got up close and personal with the new offering to carry this moniker and, although Redline has an historical snowmobiling past, it was clear that the new ownership has distanced itself from this brief moment in history.

The single-passenger Redline Revolt STV (Sport Terrain Vehicle) is powered by an EFI 749cc, liquid-cooled, 4-stroke built by Weber in Germany with a CVT transmission. The Revolt is capable of speeds up to 60mph and features shaft drive to the rear wheels.

It boasts double A-arm front suspension and a trailing arm rear with an incredible 17 inches of travel out front and 16.5 out back.

This thing can soak up the bumps, has awesome ground clearance and handles hard impacts from catching air. At only 700 lbs, dry, you’ll be surprised if it doesn’t sprout wings during lift off.

We’ll be anxiously awaiting our turn on the Revolt. Stay tuned…

Big New Entries From Honda

Honda Goes Independent

Honda has loaded its guns and hit the ATV market with an all-new model that signals the company’s determination to take back the turf it has been defending in the Sport category. The new TRX700EX features a powerful 686cc single overhead cam mill, plus (and this is a complete departure for Honda), independent rear suspension.

Although Honda isn’t first into the market with an IRS Pure Sport ATV (Polaris has been offering the Outlaw for nearly three years), the addition of this very desirable feature to the Sport ATV market puts Honda on the cutting edge.

The double A-arm design at the front delivers 9.3 inches of travel using hydraulic shocks and the independent rear wishbones stroke a full 10.6-inches. These kind of travel numbers open up all kinds of trail riding opportunities and the best part is the excellent ground clearance (9.9 inches) riders will gain, especially at the rear. Our experience with IRS Sport ATVs is you can go nearly anywhere without getting hung up on rocks and stumps the way you do on a straight axle ATV.

The engine is all-new and features a 4-valve design and Keihin throttle body style EFI (44mm throttle body). This mill should rock hard when you squeeze the flipper plus deliver the kind of smooth throttle tip-in, flawless fuel delivery and quick starting trail riders need. The whole package weighs in at a claimed 508 pounds dry, including reverse, electric start and a 5-speed manual tranny.

Obviously, Honda is looking to rock the 700 Raptor’s world with this exciting and innovative entry – and we wouldn’t bet a dime against it happening.

Honda Big Red UTV

Although not available until next summer, Honda has surprised the press with the intro of a new side X side called Big Red. The company is dead serious about this entry and has added the kinds of features UTV riders want most.

It sports fully independent double wishbone suspension at both the front and rear and a fuel-injected 675cc overhead valve single for motivation. Obviously this power package is borrowed from the Rincon, and that’s a very good thing.

We’re unsure of details but it looks like the Rincon’s torque converter style 3-speed automatic tranny is put into service here, as well. One feature we really like is the adjustability of the driver and passenger seats.

No more stretching to reach the pedals or just to get comfortable. The high volume, tilting cargo box provides a good excuse to your spouse for buying one of these.

With selectable 4×4 and plenty of ground clearance, you can expect Big Red to go just about anywhere. The 680 power package is a really good move, getting the attention of UTV owners with a power package that can deliver tons of torque for fun riding and decent power to do chores, too.

Rhino vs. Mule Comparo Data?

0

Question:

I am interested in buying a side by side ATV. Do you have any comparison data on the Rhino vs the Mule?

Steve Stevenson

Response:

Thanks for your email!

Over the past three years All-Terrain Vehicle has tested many of the current popular SxS UTV’s and we’ve done our share of comparo’s as well. However, one vehicle we have not tested is the Mule.

The Rhino is a superb UTV and our opinions are a matter of record on its performance and handling. Last year we tested the new (then) Rhino 450 and found it to be an equally capable SxS to its big brother the 660.

KTM’s Tim Farr Wins at Tri-City EDT

0

Press Release –

KTM’s Tim Farr extended his win streak with his fifth win in a row at round 7 of the ATVA Extreme Dirt Track Series at the Tri-City Speedway this past weekend.

Tim Farr, reigning Pro ATV Champion, received the last pick on the line for his heat race. Farr decided to start on the far inside from which he was able to pull out into fourth position from the start. He quickly made a pass in the sweeper for third.

The Tri-City Speedway track included two technical option lanes which fed the riders into the infield for several high-speed pass options. On the next lap, Farr took one of the option lanes and was able to steal second position.

He then set his sights on leader Aaron Reisig but was unable to make the pass before time ran out. Farr finished second in his heat.

With the weather report calling for rain showers the “Pro Show” was moved forward in an attempt to beat the arrival of the rain. As Farr headed to the staging area for his main event, the rain began to fall causing a slight delay.

As the lights turned green Farr came out third around the first turn following closely behind Darin Ogden and Bryon Partee. As the light rain continued to fall on the track Farr continued to follow behind Partee until he made a solid pass coming out of the first option lane.

Meanwhile, Ogden had built up quite a lead with a gap that the crowd thought might be too hard to overcome. Farr didn’t give up hope and continued to charge on the wet soil.

To everyone’s surprise Farr cut Ogden’s lead in half after one lap. On the following lap, Farr moved up on Ogden’s rear bumper. The two remained close as Farr continued to pressure Ogden.

With five laps remaining, Farr took the option lane coming out of turn two and made his move. The two were side by side as the lanes narrowed back into one, but Farr was able to hold on the gas longer and grabbed the inside line to take over the lead.

In the remaining laps Farr stretched out his lead to take home the win and his second Pro ATV title in two weeks.

This win secured the ATVA EDT Championship one round early for Farr. Congratulations to Farr and KTM for a successful season and their second championship of the year aboard the new KTM Sport ATV!

Maxxis 12 Hours of ATV America Online Sign Up

0

Press Release –

Pre registration, via online sign up, began over the weekend for this year’s 6th annual Maxxis 12 Hours of ATV America, held November 10th in Greenville, Texas.

This year’s event will see many changes. Topping the list, untraditional to typical team endurance racing, is the opportunity for teams to enter more than one ATV.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, but based on the many suggestions we’ve had before and after the new rule change I think it was a good one,” says Fast-Trak Promo’s John Pellan. “We kept hearing that riders would have entered a team last year but none of the team members were willing to sacrifice their own personal quad for 12 hours of abuse. We also heard many comments, especially from pro riders, that they couldn’t compete due to sponsor conflicts.

I think we solved these pitfalls and more by allowing one quad per team member.” Pellan continues, “What’s great about how we’re going about this new rule is the impound procedure we’re using. The old school teams using one machine won’t have to worry about time delays occurred in the impound area or cold engine starts. In the end I think one-quad teams will be competitive with the new multi-quad teams and we’ll have opened the door to many more entries.”

A whopping $20,000 purse is up for grabs. Plus there’s a tentative $10,000 winner take all purse in addition. This year, unlike the prior five years, every class is eligible to land their stake of the purse money – not just the pro teams.

What’s more, Fas-Trak has cut the gate admission in half and the Pro entry fee by a whopping third. “If this doesn’t attract a good group of Pro entries, I don’t know what will. I think we’ll see a lot of competition this year. Our five time winners led by Chris Borich and John Natalie should have their hands full come November,” says Pellan. He adds, “When John challenged all professional racers all over the world to come try to take this from them on the stage last year, it really got my attention. The Ironman’s statement inspired me to bring back the big purse and make this race what it truly should be – ATV racing’s grand finale.”

If the above doesn’t get interest, Fast-Trak Promo is betting that their first ever 4×4 ATV America and Miss ATV America side bar events will. “We needed a way to attract spectators and more overall interest towards the race,” says Pellan. He adds, “These aren’t hokey side show attractions. We’ve come up with two great stand alone events and we’re included them for the same gate admission. I’m confident that we will indeed attract a lot of spectators and interest toward the 12 Hours of America event by including our first-ever 4×4 America and Miss ATV America competitions. I think we’ve stepped up and put together a great concept and backed it all up with quality grand prizes.”

This year’s Miss ATV America will enjoy an all expense paid vacation for two to her choice of Las Vegas or Cancun. Meanwhile we’ll send our first-ever 4×4 ATV America Champion to Baja California, Mexico to ride on a Baja 1000 tour.Classes remain the same with Pro, A, B/C, +30, Utility Expert, Youth 13-15 and Ironman for anyone crazy enough to want to try to race for 12 hours long.

An Industry class will once again be added for the 12 Hours of America event, (2/3 of the teams must be employed by the team name). “No where else do you get a chance to race along side the best ATV racers in the world and possible beat them and take their purse money. We should have done this from the start,” says Pellan.

“The 12 Hours of America has become one of the most looked forward to events in our sport and it is a great honor that it’s now held on our property. It’s as big as Texas, and we’re committed to do whatever it takes to make this event the number one ATV event in the world. This year’s race is going to be amazing”, said Caddo Point’s, Barbara Miller.

Teams can sign up online today at 12hoursofatvamerica.com where they’re able to pay via check, Pay Pal or at the event.

Teams that scored the most points during this year’s Maxxis 6 Hours of ATV America Tour will receive a free entry to the Maxxis 12 Hours of ATV America courtesy of Fast-Trak Promotions, Inc.

KTM Launches Two Blockbuster Quads!

Exclusive Editorial By: Kent Lester

World famous off-road motorcycle builder, KTM, has delivered not one, but two new 4-wheelers for ‘08. The Austrian company’s policy is to build ATVs that are “race ready” and the promise is surely kept with the 450 and 525 XC series.

Both feature chromoly and aluminum frame and suspension parts plus Douglas aluminum wheels at all four corners wearing Maxxus RAZR tires.

Other race bred technology includes a quarter-turn gas cap for quick release in the pits; trick, premium Ohlins gas shocks; Magura 4-piston front brakes and a unique curved radiator design with bigger coolant volume for more efficient cooling.

The 525 and 450 feature both electric start and reverse yet keep the dry weight down low at less than 360lbs. Power is delivered by Keihin carbureted, dry sump, single overhead cam 4-valvers driving a 5-speed “semi-close-ratio” transmission. This setup, with first gear spaced lower and second through fifth close, is perfect for either closed track competition or for trail riding.

Our experience with this engine is that it is an absolute torque-meister in either variation and will pull gears all day long. With its advanced suspension design and top quality components used throughout, this one looks like a winner and is already showing the way in competition with Tim Farr at the controls.

There’s at least a thousand more cool innovations in this chassis and we’re looking forward to getting one for a long term evaluation and a shoot-out soon.

Press Release –

The summer break is over, and the Killer Bs are ratcheting up the tension again. Chris Borich won the first GNCC ATV event of the fall, nabbing a three-point lead in the race for the title. Bill Ballance took third place at the Geico Mountain Ridge GNCC, held September 1 in Somerset, Pennsylvania.

“What a race,” Borich told gnccracing.com. “Some people think I haven’t been training over the break, but guess what? I have been. I got the points’ lead now, and I’m just going to come out here and do the best I can and hopefully win the rest of them and grab me a championship. I need one.” Borich finished in 1:56:25 hours, after a bruising contest that was closely fought all the way to the finish line.

Ballance was not discouraged despite his difficulties during the race, which included mechanical problems. “Hey, I got third. I don’t know how, it seems like we were just barely going around the track, but it’s what I needed to hopefully move onto the championship after all this,” he told gnccracing.com.

Other Maxxis riders also rode their Razrs to the top ten: Matt Smiley took fifth place, and Brandon Sommers took seventh overall, along with his seventh Pro Am victory of the season. Duane Johnson grabbed eighth, Brent Sturdivant was ninth and Taylor Kiser rounded out the top ten. Sommers also won the ATVRiders.com holeshot award.

In the morning race, it paid to be part of the Maxxis-riding Team Warnert Racing Can-Am:  Michael Swift, Scott Kilby, and Cliff Beasley swept the morning podium and won the Limited 4×4, Open 4×4 and Lites 4×4 classes respectively.

Maxxis congratulates Chris Borich and Michael Swift on their victories and thanks all of these fine riders for their outstanding performances.

Land Pride Treker 20 Series: An American Workhorse

0

Exclusive Editorial By: AJ Lester

After getting some seat time in this machine we’ve determined that not only is the 2007 Land Pride Treker 20 Series formidable competition for other UTV manufacturers, in some utility conditions it could lead the pack.

Underneath the dump box of the Treker 20 Series rests a neatly packaged 20 horsepower Honda air-cooled power plant meshed to a CVT tranny.

This mill will propel the Treker up to 30 MPH and drives a 2 or 4 wheel independently suspended drive system. Although top speed isn’t mind-blowing this rugged side-x-side will carry up to 1,300 pounds of payload and incorporates a standard electric dump box actuator that can be easily triggered by the driver. This standard feature is in short supply on other UTV models and makes the Treker 20 stand out in a big way.

The Treker features options that cater to landscaping, construction, farming and hunting. Plus the fully enclosed cab and 60-inch snow blade make it a potent winter workhorse.

With 9.5 inches of ground clearance and a more than adequate independent suspension this vehicle will work all week and play all weekend.

Before you go dropping big coin on a UTV, take a look at what the Treker 20 Series can do on the trail, around the yard, on the farm or on the job site. You might be surprised by what this UTV can deliver.

Farr Clinches 12th Pro ATV Championship

0

Press Release –

Tim Farr won the 2007 Extreme Cycle Jam NASMOTO ATV SMGC Championship aboard his KTM 450 XC race machine in the winner-take-all format at Nashville’s Music City Motorplex; the twelfth championship of his Pro career.

The KTM pilot felt confident coming into this event despite the fact that it was his first ever Pro Supermoto ATV race. Farr has an extensive dirt track background which helped him prepare for the Supermoto race. “We were able to determine the settings we needed fairly easily coming into this event which helped the bike work flawlessly throughout the day,” stated Farr.

Farr started his day off well with a heat race win over former champion Nick Granlund. “I felt really good coming into today’s race and I’m glad to get the heat win. I knew coming into it that Nick was the guy to beat so I was glad to battle with him for a few laps and more grateful to pull away to get that top spot on the starting grid,” commented Farr after the heat win.

Farr admitted he was a bit scared when he saw the track because of the lengthy high speed straights. “I bet we were doing between 95-100mph on the straights which made me a little nervous since I didn’t have any leathers with me,” Farr continued, “The majority of the track was asphalt, more than I anticipated, but it was a fun course and I really enjoyed this event.”

In the main Farr and Granlund battled again for a couple of laps before Farr got out front and lengthened his lead. Farr competed aboard his KTM 450 XC dirt track race ATV and only made slight modifications to the suspension (stiffer springs) and gearing. The team also changed out the tires for a harder compound. “I am amazed at how well the KTM continues to adapt to every type of racing. I plan on competing in two more GNCC’s as well as the Endurocross in Oklahoma to further show the versatility and strength of the KTM Sport ATV,” commented Farr.

The champion spoke highly in regards to the potential of the sport of ATV Supermoto Racing. “I see a tremendous opportunity for growth in this segment of ATV racing. I believe this could be very popular amongst the dirt track guys that I normally race with.”

Thus far, Farr has secured one championship this year and could quite possibly seal up a second one in Pennsylvania this coming weekend. Farr stated, “I am happy to have won the Supermoto Championship and am proud to give KTM its first ATV title. I hope to make it two championships in a row as I return to the EDT Series where I am currently leading the points in the Pro-Am Unlimited class.”

In addition to his prize money and sticking to the Nashville music theme, Farr was awarded an electric guitar for his championship win. “I’m not quite sure what to do with it, but it definitely stands out and looks cool amongst the other trophies I’ve earned,” said the champ.
